"Come on! Geez! I thought heroes would have a little more stamina." An irritated male voice cut through the darkness that surrounded Aqualad behind his eye lids.
"Shut up X. He looks like he's been through a lot." Came a more feminine voice, it was soft and soothing but had a cutting edge behind it.
"Why'd you even save him Jazz? He is the guy I fight. Not my friend. In case that wasn't clear." The snarky voice retorted.
"Would you just SHUT IT! Oh my goodness, X! This is a common enemy." Aqualad heard the familiar sound of a body hitting a hard surface, followed by a grunt. "I Will Not, let another person die in front of me. Hero or not." Deciding this was probably as good as time as any, the hero cracked his eyes open expecting a blast of light; that never came. Instead he was met with a dim light that only provided enough light to see the shapes of things. It took him a couple of seconds but his eyes adjusted and he was able to make out the sources of the voices.
Pressed against the wall was a torn, but familiar, red and black clad guy. He was tall and wearing a mask, to Aqualad's dismay he quickly recognized Robin's second biggest enemy, Red-X. That wasn't what astonished the hero, however. To his credit he was amazed to find it was a woman that had X pinned against the wall. He was only able to see her back but the wavy brown hair gave the woman's identity away; she was Aqualad's savior.
Shifting slightly he forced his tired arms to work and pushed himself off the bed. The small movement and slight sound gave him away and the pair whirled around in surprise to see their patient was conscious. For all his discomfort of being under their stares, he was able to push it out of the way due to his astonishment at the face of his rescuer.
She was beautiful. Scratch that, she was stunning. The brunette beauty was wearing tight black jeans that were ripped in several places and an army green, button down shirt that was fitted to her form and tucked neatly into her pants. Her waist donned a dark brown leather belt that was decorated with holsters for her dual pistols. Around her right thigh was a knife sheath and a strap was arranged diagonally acrossed her chest that held her sword. Her black jeans tucked into black combat boots that adorned a slight bulge that indicated she had some kind of weapon tucked in. Fortunately her dangerous attire didn't steal any of the show from her astonishing looks.
She had long, wavy brown hair that was side parted to the left and tucked into a high pony tail. She had high cheek bones, a straight nose, and full lips that would have given her an elegant look but was marred by the look in her light brown eyes. Dirt smudged her face but it didn't ruin her looks. Any sensible man would have been at least physically attracted to her if they weren't already attached. Unfortunately for the Aquatic prince, he was. To Terra.
"You're awake. Great. Now leave." Came a robotic voice from the shadows behind the girl. He shouldn't have been. Really. After seeing her in action he should have for seen her doing something like this, but he didn't. With a glint in her honey brown eyes she spun around and punched the masked criminal in the face, hard. All this happened in the time it took him to blink. Though the thief had remarkable reflexes, he was not prepared for the punch that caught him in the face and sent him into a world of temporary darkness.
With a huff of satisfaction the girl turned back around after admiring her victim slumped on the floor. To say she was uncomfortable with the shocked look he gave her was an understatement. She shifted, "He was getting really annoying." Her voice was soft and edgy. He just stared at her blankly and she frowned. Stalking towards him, she stopped a few feet away and waved a hand in his face, "Hello? Anyone home?" a sarcastic and impatient tone had seized her voice, snapping Aqualad out of his trance,
"Where am I?" he blurted out, it was the first thing that came to mind. It broke the dam and questions flowed out of him like rushing water, "Who are you? How do you know Red-X? Do you realize he's a criminal? How did you fight those things back there? Why did you save me? Who are you? Do you know where Terra is?" He paused to take a breath from his tirade of questions.
"Whoa there!" she cut in before he could say anything more and held up her hands as if trying to physically stop the words from developing. Her eyes narrowed and her brow furrowed in an attempt to remember his questions and try to answer them in order. "Okay, umm, you're safe now. That's all you need to know. My name is Jasmine. Yes, I know Red-X, as you call him, is a criminal, how could I not? He's my best-friend. I saved you because I don't watch people die. Like I said, my name is Jasmine and I'm 16? Doesn't matter right now. That's all you need to know about me personally. No, I don't know who Terra even is. And my favorite dessert is Recess Peanut Butter Cups." She seemed sinfully proud of answering all the questions in the right answer. The devilish glint in her eyes indicated that she added the last one as a little sanctuary for herself. Trying to live in the days where that actually mattered.
"So you don't know where Terra is?" he demanded. The welcoming gleam in her eyes drained and was replaced with a cold glare.
"Look. I didn't have to save you." She took a step closer, "You are at my mercy now. In my debt." Jasmine hissed taking another step, "I don't know why you came back but it was a mistake. This place is abandoned." Another step, "You owe me a favor." Another step, "And I don't care who you are, you heroes abandoned us when we needed you the most. Where were you for that? Hiding away in a little safe house?!" Another step. She was inches away and she jabbed her finger at his chest, "Civilian or not. I saved you. Now you save us. Take us to our safe house." She backed off, turning around and stalked towards the still-collapsed Red-X. She stopped at the edge of the shadows, "If you didn't what kind of hero would you be if you didn't save two poor, helpless, citizens in their time of need?"
A challenge was in her voice. How she has jumped from happy to angry that fast was beyond him. He had just asked one question. Now he was backed into a corner. Yes, she did save him. And yes, he was still some-what of a hero. Jasmine had cut a little too closely when she accused him of leaving. But he was hesitant to bring a stranger into the safe house. They were limited on supplies. What would Robin say? Besides, they didn't look to helpless and poor. He stood up,
"We can't afford to help you. You can handle yourself better on your own." He said simply and began walking towards what he presumed was the exit. It was cold, he knew, but it was necessary, he had more than just two people to think of right now.
If he left now, he could get back in say maybe 5 day's time with the dolphin's help. Robin wasn't expecting him for at least 7 days so he could continue to search for Terra for about two days. That seemed like just the right amount of ti-,
Aqaulad was suddenly jerked out of his musing when his back met the hard steel ground, his feet being, literally, swept out from under him. Before he could react a weight came down on his chest and a very cold and very sharp object was pressing into the delicate flesh of his throat. A cold eerie chuckle merited from his attacker throat. It was cold and harsh and sent shivers down Aqualad's spine. "I don't really think you have a choice. Like I said. You're at my mercy.
Raven
For hours they had been fighting, non-stop. Swipe after swipe, blow after blow, bite after bite. It felt like days in the dark world that the two heroes were in. No matter which way they turned there was another one waiting to try to take a bite out of them. For hours Raven had given it her all, chanting every incantation that she could remember, uttering every spell that came to mind, fighting with all her heart to keep her best friend alive.
He had been fighting for even longer then her. Dark circles were traced under his dull eyes. His hair was matted and sweat dripped from his body mixing in with the blood that seeped from multiple wounds inflicted all over his torn body. He was battered, exhausted and on the brink of death. Exhaustion warred deep within both of their bodies marring the hope that they clung onto in fighting the inevitable.
Glancing over at him now, Raven felt her heart tare in two for the changeling. He was fighting, even now, with every fiber her had to warn off the infection. Chanting her mantra, she sent out a black wave of energy that dissipated every infection player that surrounded them, then dropped to the ground. She closed her eyes and forced back the tears that welled up in her eyes.
The sorceress looked up and watched Beast Boy stumble over to her fallen form. Slowly, painfully, she forced herself up and turned to him. Concern etched his features and Raven felt a pang shoot through her heart. Even on the brink of death he was still worried about her. "Are you okay?" He asked as he fell onto his knees next to her now standing form. His head was bowed as he heaved for breath, his wounds showing through his uniform and tearing at Raven. She bit her lip,
"I'm fine but…" she trailed off, turning her head away and squeezing her eyes shut. She felt his eyes on her, "my powers. I can't use them anymore." She let out a ragged breath, "My demon blood is focusing on using the rest of my drained power in keeping me here." Her voice faltered and she heard Beast Boy drag himself to his feet.
"Rae, you need to leave." Her eyes flew up to him in shock. A sudden shriek split the air and they both glanced up to see another wave stumbling towards them in the distance. She backed away from him,
"I-I can't! I-I…I have to stay…I have to fight." The end of the words were snappy like she was trying to say something but afraid she was going to sob instead. She couldn't leave him. He was always there for her when she needed him. Always there for her when she needed a smile, a laugh, a hug...a friend. She couldn't leave him. After all he had done for her, no. She would stay and fight. But even as the words crossed her mind she knew she had to go or she would die to.
Her body was on fire with pain and she wanted to cry but she would never. Instead she looked up at her green friend and gently cupped his cheek, "Beast Boy…" She whispered, despair evident in her voice. The changeling cringed at the sound but closed his eyes, shielding his forest green orbs from her violet one,
"We would have been wonderful together Rae." He murmured, leaning into her palm, "I would have made you feel like the princess you are." Raven felt tears threaten to spill over her wide purple eyes. With each word he said she felt a piece of her heart get ripped apart. "Remember me Rae…please." He begged her and opened his eyes and she felt her head nod even as she felt her insides die at her best friend's words.
"Beast Boy," the words caught in her throat and they heard the thudding of feet and knew their time was short.
"Shh…Rae…" he soothed, "Just close your eyes." He whispered and kissed her palm before releasing her hand. She fought back a choked sob, refusing to let tears fall. And she closed her eyes "You'll be all right," he promised as he drew her heaving body into his arms. 'No I won't!' she wanted to scream, 'I need you!' He murmured something that she couldn't hear and he pressed his lips into her matted, bloodied hair and tightened his grip on her, "Soon… you'll be safe," his words caught as he sobbed, "And sound…" She fisted her hands into his chest, wanting to refuse to let go but she already felt herself being pulled back into reality. No! No! Let me stay! Let me die with him! She screamed in her mind.
She felt herself grow weaker and weaker, more translucent…like she wasn't even there. She began to fade, drifting upwards and out of him. She watched, helplessly as he stared at her for a few, heart wrenching moment, before turning into a bear and got prepared for the battle they knew he was going to lose. NO!
Her eyes flew open and she gasped. He arms and legs were marked with the battle she had just recently fought but she was back in the bunker, sitting lotus beside the now unmoving changeling. Slowly, she unfolded herself from her position and stood, her eyes locked on Beast Boy, ignoring the questions that her friends asked.
He was staring blankly at the ceiling, his chest wasn't moving and his heart beat wasn't there. Still, she let not a tear fall. Biting her lip she grabbed the dagger off his night stand. The one she had given him two Christmases ago. Squeezing her eyes shut she centered her mind and moved her limp arms. Her emotions were screaming at her, telling her she was a terrible friend and a traitor. She ignored them.
Clutching the dagger in her left hand, she reached a trembling hand forward and gently closed his eyes lids, "Just close your eyes," she whispered before drawing her hand back and looking at his relaxed face. Her heart skipped a beat, he had grown so much, matured. Their friendship had grown unspeakably close. Seeing him so relaxed almost soothed her, almost. "You'll be alright," she promised just as he had before they left. She gritted her teeth, "Soon, you'll be safe and sound."
Transferring the dagger so it was between both her hands she gripped it like a life line and raised it above her head. She squeezed her eyes shut before slamming her hands downwards with all her strength, plunging the dagger deep into his skull. She felt dead inside and barely registered the gasps of utter shock behind her. Dully, she watched the blood seep out of the gash and stain his face and her hands and she smiled faintly. Turning Raven walked to the door and flung it open before fleeing down the twisted hallways, not bothering to respond to the calls behind her.
Suddenly, her destination loomed before her and she threw open the door before walking shakily inside and closing the door behind her. She shut her eyes in the darkness and pressed her back against the wall, sinking until she sat onto the floor, her knees drawn to her chest. Finally she let out a sob and let the tears slip freely from her eyes and run down her cheeks. Once one fell the others soon followed its salty trail, some falling off, and some dying on her lips. She bit her lip to stop the flood of sobs building in her throat but she couldn't help it as the escaped, "Why?!" she screamed into the darkness. He was her team mate. Her Best Friend. Her brother. He was a shoulder to cry on, a comedian when she was down, a friend when she needed to talk. He was so patient waiting on her. Remember me. His words echoed in her head and she nodded in response to them, letting out another sob as tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry!" she cried out, "I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough…" she wiped her cheeks, smearing his blood on her face but she couldn't make herself care. Raven flung herself to the ground, "I'm sorry…"
And there she sat, it could have been hours. It could have been minutes or days for all she cared. She felt as if she was the one who had died. She wished it. He deserved to live. But there she cried, sobbed, screamed on the dusty floor. Where no one could comfort her or judge her. Where no one could witness her pain except the brooms and mops of the cleaning closet. No one except the darkness.
A/N: Hey my wonderful reviewers! I hope this (Decently) long chapter makes up for the wait! I was going to post this on Valentines Day but I had a camp to go to so that…yeah. Anyways! So for any of you who didn't recognize this, the "Just close your eyes….you'll be alright…you will be safe and sound" is out of The Hunger Games/ Taylor Swift's: Safe and Sound. I love that song and You should try re-reading it with that song in the back ground. I almost started crying. So I'm not very confident in my writing ability with Sad scene so tell me what you think in your review! That about wraps that up… Oh! Your characters! I will add them in next chapter! I promise!
