The alarm clock came on time, but it felt too soon still. Harper hit the snooze button and rolled onto her back. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes and sat up. She sighed and pulled herself out of bed, trying to stop the imminent smile from creeping onto her face—and failing. Honestly, though, it felt good to smile.

So she let herself smile all morning long as she readied herself for work. She dressed in denim shorts, a green top, and her sandals. She pulled her hair up into a loose pony tail, and fixed her make-up.

After a quick breakfast, she grabbed her bag and slid on her sunglasses. As she started to walk to the front door, there was a knock. She raised her eyebrow at the sudden knock and slowly turned the knob to open it. To her surprise, Steve was standing outside her door. He smiled as she opened the door all the way. "Hey," she said. "What are you doing here? I thought you had a job to get to." Darcy came trotting to the door and Steve knelt to pet him.

Steve stood. "I'm not working today," he said, causing Harper to raise her eyebrow again. "And neither are you."

"What are you talking about?" she asked, crossing her arms loosely around her middle. Steve took her wrists, uncrossing her arms, and slid his hand in hers. "You and I are going on a trip—three, four days max—just the two of us and this big island," he said. Harper was speechless. And confused. "I can't take three or four days off of work," she said.

"I already took care of that," he said. "All you have to do is say you'll come with me." Harper wasn't the type of girl to go on whim trips with the current guy she was dating. But, this time, she actually wanted to go. "Give me a minute to pack?" she asked, trying not to smile—and failing.

"Of course," he smiled. She rose on her toes and kissed his cheek before turning back into her apartment. She went into her bedroom while Steve waited by the door with Darcy. Harper put the necessary clothes into a duffel bag—packed to the rim—then walked back to the living room. "I'll text Ellie and see if she can check in on Darcy," she said, walking to Steve.

"Already covered," he said, taking her hand in his.

"Okay…" she said, smiling as they walked out the front door. She shut and locked the door while Steve put her bag in the back of his truck. Harper walked around to the passenger side and climbed into the seat. "I at least have to call Ellie and tell her I'll be gone, or else she'll freak," Harper called to Steve, through the open driver side window.

She pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed Ellie's number. She held the phone to her ear as it rung, and rung. Steve got in the driver's seat and started the engine. Harper rolled down her window and sighed, the phone still ringing. Finally, as they were pulling out of the parking lot, Ellie answered. "Why are you calling me from work?" Ellie asked, curiously.

"I'm not at work. Look, El, I'm gonna be away for a few days, okay? Don't freak out, but-"

"What?" Ellie screeched. "Where are you going? Did something happen?" Harper was startled by the sudden loud voice, holding the phone away from her ear until Ellie finished. Harper sighed. "Ellie, nothing happened," Harper reassured her, to which Ellie sighed in relief. "I'm okay. I called to say I'd be gone with Steve for a few days so you wouldn't worry."

"Wait…" Harper paused. "You're going with Steve?" Ellie sounded almost hurt, yet she was practically spitting out the words at the same time. "Yes?" Harper said.

"You two are back together? After what he did?" Ellie asked.

"It's a long story, alright? I'll tell you when I get back," Harper said.

"Fine," Ellie grumbled. Suddenly, the line went dead. Harper slid her phone into her pocket and shook her head. "What?" Steve asked, noticing Harper's change in mood.

"Oh, it's nothing. Just Ellie. She doesn't really like you," Harper said, turning to look at him.

"Can't say that I blame her," he shrugged once.

"I just…I really don't want her to hate me now, or something," she said, glancing out her window. "She's my only girl-friend here." Steve slid his free hand in hers and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Don't worry about it, okay? I don't think Ellie could ever hate you, not from what I've seen," he said. She nodded, taking in a breath. "Yeah…you're right," she said. "She'll get over it."

Unbeknownst to Harper, the first stop on the trip was the Hawaii State Art Museum. Harper never really had much free time for site seeing, given her work schedule. So as they parked along the sidewalk in front of the Museum, she became very excited. Not just 'oh, this is a cool place' type of excited. It was the bouncing-off-the-walls, you-could-almost-confuse-her-with-Ellie type of excited. Steve smiled at her enthusiasm.

"I was gonna see this place a year or two ago, but I never got the chance," Harper said. She slid out of the truck and got her jacket from the back. Steve slid out and shut his door, then met Harper on the sidewalk. Hand-in-hand, they walked to the entrance of the Museum.

The Hawaii State Art Museum is located on the 2nd floor of the No. 1 Capitol District Building. It used to be a hotel in the eighteen hundreds. Currently, it has a 70-seat Museum multi-purpose room for orientation, education, special events, and public programs.

There were four different galleries on display—three paintings and drawings, and one sculptures. Harper found the Diamond Head gallery the most interesting. She was no artist, but she loved looking at various works of art. Like "The Scream", and "Starry Night". If you asked her, she wouldn't be able to tell you why she liked those specific paintings. "I didn't peg you as such an art lover," Steve said, as they exited the Museum.

"Well, the pastor at the church I was found at thought it was because I was laid under a stain glass depiction of Saint Christopher," she explained. "Of course, I don't believe in that kind of thing. But it's nice to have an idea of where it's from." By the time they were done at the Museum, it was around lunch time. So they decided to stop in at a small diner to get something to eat before hitting the next destination. Harper slid into a booth by the front windows and Steve slid in across from her.

"So, what else do you have planned on this trip?" she asked, leaning into the table on her forearms. She cocked an eyebrow with a small smile and Steve chuckled. "Now, that you'll have to wait to find out," he said.

"I have to warn you," Harper said, leaning back into the booth, looking at the menu. "I'm not into surprises."

"Don't worry. I think you're going to like the next one," he said.

"As long as it's not rock climbing, I'm excited," she said, with a smile. "Oh, that's another thing I have to warn you about. I'm not into heights, either."

"What are you into?" he asked, smiling back.

"Puppies, kittens, unicorns, sparkles…" she listed out in a joking manner, using her fingers to keep track. "Rainbows…and, there's something I'm missing…Oh! I got it. You."

"Oh, I made the list?" he asked, chuckling.

"Hey, you should be honored, alright?" she laughed.

"Yes, there were so many awesome things on that list. I'm just surprised I made it in the bottom cut," he joked. Harper reopened her menu and tried not to laugh, but found herself chuckling anyway. Something about going on a whim trip for days and spending it with Steve—even just the idea of it—made her feel bubbly inside. Like there was a feelings volcano inside her, just waiting to spew everything. She'd never been the girl to do things like this—Ellie was.

And the role swap was baffling. Now Ellie's the sensible one and Harper is the wild one? The world must be ending soon.
