Chapter Eleven

"Hey. Hey Kara!" I felt a gentle shake on my shoulder and snapped back into reality, looking up into Yuki's purple eyes. "Are you alright?" he asked, concerned. I nodded slowly, and then shrugged. "Want to talk about it?" He sat down next to me on the grass. I sighed, stretched out and laid my head in his lap.I felt his fingers run gently through my hair. I started plucking at the grass. "I'm worried about Kyo..." I said slowly. "It...Something just tells me that this time, Kyo's disappearance..something's wrong.." Yuki pulled a strand of my hair and slowly started twisting it.

"That stupid cat only thinks about himself Kara. If the situation gets hard, he runs. Last time, he ran to the mountains for three months. Don't you see?" I sighed. Maybe Yuki was right, to a degree. "I don't know Yuki..." I looked up at him. "It... It just feels different this time." He leaned over me as he slowly ran his index finger softly down the side of my face and under my chin, tilting it up and kissed me softly. I shivered slightly as the fine hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer to me kissing him back. A few minutes after our kiss, he looked at me and smiled softly. "Feeling better?" I smiled and nodded and curled up in his arms and sighed when he ended up changing into rat form.

"Do you ever think...like is it possible that maybe one day we'd be able to be together? I mean, without you...you know..." I asked him as I heard that familiar poof. I turned my back not wanting to see a naked Yuki, nor to make him uncomfortable. Yuki remained silent as he got dressed again. "Honestly, I don't know." he said, sitting back down next to me. "I mean, sure, I heard stories that it was possible to break this damn curse, but that's what it is, right? Just a story?" I looked over at him sadly, and then an idea popped into my head. "What if we can find a way to break the curse? I mean, if you and Kyo and everyone else stopped transforming, you can all live happy lives...right?"

Yuki shook his head sadly. "Kara, it was just a story, hearsay, nothing more. Besides, if there was a way to break the curse and it was possible for us to be happy, you, Kara, still wouldn't be happy." I bit my lip, thinking, and then smiled at Yuki. "Then we break the curse somehow before I have to marry him." Yuki sighed. "I don't know Kara. I don't want you to get your hopes up." I sighed. "I'm not the only one who thinks the curse can be broken." I muttered softly, more so to myself. He looked up at me and ever so lightly brushed against my lips with his lips. "Don't worry about it right now." he whispered quietly in my ear, sending shivers down my spine.

We walked back hand in hand in the early evening and as soon as the house came into view we let go. We walked in and Shigure was sitting at the table reading the paper. "It was such a wonderful day out, don't you think?" he asked without looking over his paper. "You two spent the whole day together. Just the two of you." Shigure laughed softly as something bounced of his paper. "I need to study, I'll be upstairs." Yuki said, turning and walking upstairs.

I watched him go, and then sat down at the table resting my head in my hands. Shigure folded up the paper and I could feel his eyes looking at me. "You should be more careful. Word might get back to him." he said softly. I glared at him. "Yeah? Are you going to tell him?" Shigure sighed and avoided the question. "What's wrong?"

I sighed and shrugged. "Have you heard anything about Kyo?" I asked. Shigure tilted his head to the side and put a finger to his chin like he was in deep thought. "Hmm, Kyo? Ah I see! Guess that's why my house is still standing. Kyo's not here." he said and laughed.

I groaned and rested my head on the table. "You're just realizing now that Kyo isn't here?" Shigure laughed again, and then became serious. "He's probably back in the mountains and I'm sure he's fine Kara. Now stop worrying. Worrying makes me hungry. Speaking of which..." I looked up at him as he called out. "Tohru..Tohru!"

I groaned again. "Can't you just cook yourself something and not be lazy about it?" I stood up and Tohru came running down the stairs. "S-sorry. I was upstairs studying." she apologized. Shigure smiled. "It's alright. I'm just getting a bit hungry and -" Tohru quickly cut him off. "Oh! I'm sorry. Is it really time for dinner? I should start on that right away." She quickly hurried into the kitchen and I glared at Shigure again, but he chuckled and shook his head. "She's not your maid Shigure." I said, turning and opening the sliding door. "Hear that Tohru? Don't let him boss you around." I sighed. "I'm not hungry..I'll eat later when I'll be back." I said, and then slid the door shut.

The door was slid shut putting Kyo in total darkness again. Kyo groaned as he sat up, holding onto his side. Mighty fine position I'm in. He thought as he rested his head against the wall. Five minutes later, the door opened again and a tall silhouette stood in the door. Kyo squinted to try and see who it was, but the light was just so bright. "Akito told me to come and fix you up." Kyo smirked slightly, recognizing who the voice belonged to. Hatori. "I don't need fixing up. I'm fine." Kyo spat. Hatori walked over to Kyo and seeing Kyo holding his side, poked him with his shoe, which sent Kyo into a rage full of curses. Hatori sighed sadly. "Come with me." he said quietly. "And you have to promise you will behave or I will have to put you out again." Kyo grumbled as he stood up, leaning against the wall for support. Hatori carefully wrapped Kyo's arm around his neck and helped him from his dark prison. Kyo didn't complain, but did hiss in pain.

They reached the office and Hatori helped Kyo onto the table, laying him carefully down on his back. He turned on the over head light, lit a cigarette and put his gloves on. He looked down at Kyo, taking in the bumps, cuts, welts and bruises that he could see. He sighed. Akito sure did a number on him. He thought sadly to himself.

Hatori treated to Kyo's head wounds first, cleaning the dried blood off his forehead, making sure there were no open wounds on his head that needed stitching. When he was finished he carefully cut what was left of Kyo's blood stained shirt, and looked at his torso. Welts galore from Akito's whipping. Hatori gently moved his fingers along Kyo's rib cage trying to find out the number of broken ribs. From the sudden jumps Kyo gave, Hatori found three broken.

He put his cigarette out, finished cleaning up Kyo's chest and gave him a clean shirt. "There isn't much I can do for your ribs, Kyo, but you have three broken ribs and they have to heal on their own. Six weeks. And I'll be giving you medication so you won't be in pain, but if they don't work, I'll give you a stronger dose." Hatori rubbed his temples. "You also have to remember to breath deep. If you don't you may develop pneumonia." Kyo snorted. "I'm serious Kyo." Hatori said angrily. "This isn't a game. It's for your own good." Kyo slowly sat up. "Right. For my own good. Like locking me up is for my own good." Kyo climbed off the table and held on to it until he felt sturdy on his feet. "They must wonder where I am Hatori, especially Kara." he muttered.

Hatori didn't respond. Of course they wondered where Kyo was, it was only natural. He, Shigure and Akito knew where Kyo was. He lit another cigarette. "I have to take you back now Kyo. I suggest you go the easy way this time." Kyo didn't move. "I'm not going back in there. I have to let Kara know I'm fine." He looked up at the taller man. "Please, Ha'ri." he pleaded. Hatori sighed. "I'll tell her the next time I see her that you're fine, alright?" Kyo clenched his fists and looked outside into the night, as he tried to calm himself down. He felt defeated. "Fine...but it's not fair." he said quietly and followed slowly behind Hatori. "I'll also try to keep Akito from taking his anger out on you." Kyo didn't respond. He knew that no one could stop Akito when he was angry.
