Lights in the Dark
Detective Kono continuously stared out of his car window while he and his partner Detective Ito drove hurriedly to the children's center downtown. When he was alerted that a child had disappeared from the property, he requested the case immediately. Not only that it was a child that went missing but it was one of Noa Kaiba. He remembered that boy so clearly because he was the one that recused him down in the cold dark basement about four to five years ago.
He always wondered what became of that young kid he saved. He lost track of him when the boy fell back into the system. It wasn't until recently when he heard on the news that the boy had resurfaced again and was being adopted by Seto Kaiba himself. That was a shocker when he heard that but he was very happy for him. He thought the kid deserved a happy ending and it looked like he finally found one. He smiled briefly when suddenly he was pulled away from his thoughts by the voice of his long-time partner. He rubbed his forehead some.
"Why did you request this case anyway Kono?" Ito lined his brow for a moment. He sighed somewhat heavily, "They cases never end well," he frowned a bit.
"Because… this one is different," Kono lined his face a bit, "I know the boy."
"What do you mean, you know the boy?" Ito looked over for a second.
"I saved him," Kono let go a deep breath. "It was year two thousand. I was a rookie back then. I was called out to a house disturbance…" he began in a distant voice. He let his mind drift back within his memories, back to that very day.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Young policeman Kono pulled his police cruiser up to the house and parked it. He was responding to a disturbance call that he'd received from dispatch, people were reporting of a heated argument from the home. He viewed the house for a moment and noticed how well kept the house was. In the driveway sat a very nice sport's car. He exited his car, went up to the front porch and paused at the door.
He could clearly hear loud noises inside the residence, glass breaking and things being tossed. It sounded like there was a fight in progress and feared that someone might be in danger, he waited just a minute then gave the door several loud ponds, "This is the Domino police!" he shouted, "Open the door now or I will break it down!" he listened intensely when suddenly he heard light footsteps moving fast. He drew his weapon and mentally prepared himself. He moved along in front of the door and in one quick motion he kicked it in, he heard the wood split when it flung opened. He viewed around cautiously as he ever so slowly entered.
It was dingy and dark as the curtains were draw close. "Hello, this is officer Kono, is someone hurt in here?" he called out. He very cautiously walked along the house while he checked around corners and whatnot. When came upon the kitchen, he furrowed his brow serious when he spotted an unconscious man on the floor with a stab wound at his side. He went over to him at once and check to make he was still alive, thankfully he was. He quickly reached for a hand towel that was on the table and covered the man's wound then reached for his walkie talkie, "Dispatch, this officer Kono. I'm at residence of Parkers Street, one-o-one, I have one individual injured. I need backup and an ambulance right away," he called it in.
"Copy that, sending now."
Officer Kono viewed around the place taking in the scene when he suddenly heard a light groan. He tapered his eyes at the wounded man, "I'm officer Kono. Do you live here?" he watched him nod a little bit, "Can you tell me what happened here sir? Who'd stabbed you?" he asked the man, he saw him gasped painfully.
Masao gasped painfully. He grabbed at his side and mentally cursed Razan for doing this. He tried to get up but was pushed down by someone, he looked up confused, "What…?" he then noticed it was a police officer, Oh shit, he thought.
"Take it easy, you've been hurt," Officer Kono inhaled a breath, "Can you tell me who attacked you?" he asked again, he viewed around cautiously and ready his weapon. The culprit sill could be in the house, he lined his sweaty brow serious.
Masao thought for a moment, "I don't know… some nut job. I never saw him before." He winced painfully, "He broke in here and... I don't know," he lied. The last thing he needed was more trouble. When the officer attention was elsewhere, he glanced over to the basement door, he knew for sure he'd be in plenty of trouble when they discover the boy, he cursed again, he done for now.
About two minutes later, four to five more officers were at the scene along with an ambulance crew. Officer Kono inhaled a relieved breath and moved out of the way so they could begin to work on the injured man. While they did that Officer Kono viewed the other officers seriously, "Let's check the rest of the place out. You two check upstairs. Officer Asai, check the rest of the house while I'll check the basement." He saw the rest of police officers nod and went to do so. He inhaled another breath then went over to the basement door. He furrowed his brow curious when he noticed a dead bolt on it. He wondered why that was there. He very slowly unlocked the door and grasped the handle. He then very cautiously opened it and spotted a wooden staircase that led down. It was dark and he couldn't find the light switch so he drew out his flashlight and shone it down.
He very carefully made his way into the dark abyss. The overused staircase creaked as he did so. When he reached the bottom he thought his heard something, as small whimper, it was faint and low. He readied his weapon again. "This is police officer Kono. Who's down here?" he creased his brow when heard movement over by the far end of the basement, he could tell someone was down there. He blinked his eyes a few times as he tried to adjust them to the darkness. Once his were settled to the dark, he very cautiously walked toward the sound.
Inch by inch he walked. Halfway through the room he came upon a table while next to it was a video camera on a stand. On top was a digital camera, a leather belt, a gag-ball, two shoeboxes and underneath was a large half opened trunk.
Curiously he kicked the lid up, inside where costumes of all kinds appeared to be in child size. He creased his brow at that then moved his attention on top of table, two shoeboxes. He hesitated for a moment then decided to open the first box, it had vibrates, a taser, cuffs, bondage ties and a blindfold. He raised an eye brow at that then opened the other box. It was full of condoms and drugs of all kinds. He became shocked, "What... the… hell…?" he didn't expect to find all that.
Suddenly his head shot up when he heard what sounded like a chain being drugged across the floor. It could be animal, a dog of some kind. He creased his brow and shone his flashlight ahead of him. "I repeat, this is officer Kono, come on out with your hands up," he continued on, when he came close to the far end of the basement wall he moved his flashlight, skimmed through darkness until he landed upon a small boy. He was barely dress, looked half-starved and was covered in small cuts and bruises. He was shackled to a chain that was bolted to the floor. He saw the boy become frightened and scooted in to the corner, he widened his eyes in complete shock, he was horrified, "My dear god." He hastily put his weapon away and knelt down. "It's all right, it's all right. My name's officer Kono. I'm not going to hurt you, okay," he tried to calm the child down. "See," he pointed to his badge on his shirt, "I'm the good guy. I'm not going to hurt you."
Noa hunched in the corner scared. He hadn't seen this man before. Was he knew costumer? He viewed his uniform and wondered if the man was playing a role or playing a game of some kind. He wished Masao would come and tell him. He didn't want to be punished for screwing up the job. He widened his eyes again when other man dressed in the same way came behind him. He gulped some, two. He hated when there were two. He would always end up getting hurt more.
"Kono, are you all right down here?" Officer Asai walked up to him and spotted the kid with his flashlight. "Holly shit, what…?" he became shocked as well.
Officer Kono stood up with an angry brow, "Asai," he faced him seriously, "Place the man upstairs into custody and have someone follow him to the hospital. We don't want to lose him, we got find out what hell was going on here. He's the only one who can tell us." He saw him nod and was about to go do so, "But first let the ambulance crew know we got another one down here who needs serious medical attention and try to see if you can find some bolt cutters too." He softened his face for moment, "I… I'll stay here with the kid," he viewed the boy for a moment and saw him flinched further into the corner. He still couldn't believe it, how can anyone do this to a child, being chained like an animal and maybe be force to do horrible things, it made him sick to his stomach when he thought about it.
"Right, I do that right now." Officer Asai lined his brow seriously. He gave the child one last look of sympathy before he ran out of there to go do his given tasks.
Officer Kono inhaled a deep breath, he knelt back down. "No one's going to hurt you anymore. You're safe now, it's all right," he lessened his eyes sadly, he want so desperately to ease the child down, "We're going to get you out of here."
Noa chewed his lip. He wondered if he should believe this man or trust him. He's been lied to, hurt and betrayed so many times before. He was so unsure of what was true. He sighed slightly and just waited fearfully for whatever may come.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Suddenly, the car halted abruptly which caused Detective Kono to snap out of the past memory. He looked up then and saw that they had finally arrived down at the children's center. Luckily the media hadn't caught wind of this so they didn't have to deal with that aspect just yet. He inhaled a heavy breath and followed his partner. He got out hastily and briskly walked to the main entrance. He hoped they got there in time. Time was very perilous in aid of finding a missing child.
"Man what a story," Ito continued toward the building quickly.
"Yeah… it was," Kono rubbed his forehead as thought of the kid again.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Inside the main lobby of the building, a small group of kids, teens and adults of all ages stood around while a policeman questioned Jin and Ms. Gardner. "It was around twelve-fifteen this afternoon. He went to use the bathroom and hadn't returned." Ms. Gardner continued with her story while she softened her eyes worriedly, "I knew Noa wasn't feeling well a couple of days ago and thought he might have gotten sick again so that's when we went to check on him," she pointed to the guard that stood in the back of them. She glanced at the man for a moment that looked just as anxious. "When he wasn't there that's when we went to Jin's office to see if he had seen him," she lined her brow more worried.
"I hadn't so we decided to have a look around all over the place." Jin interrupted her, "I thought he might have wandered off somewhere else in the building."
"That's when you discovered that the boy was missing from the grounds," the policeman lined his face concerned. He hated when a child went missing, time was critical if they wanted to find them alive and unharmed. He creased his brow more while he continued to question the owner and wrote down the info fast.
"Yes, we still couldn't find him so I decided called the police then." Jin creased his brow more concerned. He had called Joey to let him know what was going on but was still unable to contact Seto for some reason. He knew for sure that Seto would be very distraught when he found out that his brother was missing.
With all the steps his friend had taken that this should happen again.
Although, Noa could have just taken off from the grounds to someplace else like someone had suggested earlier but that wouldn't make sense. He knew Noa and knew he would never do that. The boy knew how adamant Seto was about his and Mokuba's protection and he definitely wouldn't do anything to upset his brother in any way. Something must have happened. He inhaled a shaky breath and prayed that they would find him soon. Please god, let them find him soon.
Ms. Gardner nodded. She became a bit emotional now. She dabbed at her eye with her finger, "I don't know why he went without his guard, he wasn't supposed to," she stated absentmindedly. She couldn't help but feel a tab bit guilty. She knew the circumstances involving both the Kaiba boys. She should have gone with him or made sure he was with his guard before he left. Mr. Kaiba would most certainly found a way to blame her, like he once did when she tried to counsel Mokuba last year but failed badly at that attempt. She swallowed a tearful breath.
"Tea," Jin rested a hand on her shoulder gently. He could tell that she was blaming herself in some way. "Why don't you take care of the rest kids while I continue to talk with the policeman, okay," he smiled comfortingly at his friend.
Tea nodded slightly, "Come along kids," she gathered the other children and led them away from the scene. As she did so, she hoped deep down that they would be able to find Noa very soon. She would never forgive herself if they never find him. She then looked to her right with a sad brow, "You to Leon," she reached out for him when she noticed that he hadn't moved yet. She saw him sighed jaggedly.
Leon stood there with Noa's bag clutched to his chest, protecting it. He promised his friend that he would looked after it for him. He inhaled a breath, when he heard that Noa was missing, he instantly thought the worse. However, he pushed that thought out of his mind. He had to think positive here. They would find him, yes he knew that and he would be safe, he just had to be. He lifted his face somewhat hopeful while he finally followed Ms. Gardner back to the study room.
The policeman watched them go with an empathized breath. He cleared his throat somewhat, "Maybe he went home or perhaps he went to a friend's house," he suggested, "Did you call around to see if he went anywhere else?"
Jin turned back around then shook his head sadly. "No, he's not at home, I've called and checked there already and Noa… he doesn't have many friends." He saw the policeman raised a brow at that, "It's complicated," he only said.
The policeman simple nodded at that, "Can you… describe the boy to me then?" he started up once again, "His age, what he looked like and what he was wearing at the time and so forth?" he saw Jin nod and went right into it. He wrote it down as quickly as he could, the sooner he had a description of the child the sooner he could report it back to dispatch. Like he thought earlier, time was perilous.
Jin continued to describe Noa's appearance to the officer until halfway he was interrupted by someone. "Excuse me Mr.…" he heard a solemn voice behind him. He turned around and saw two older gentlemen approaching them with serious looks. He spotted their badges on their belts and relaxed, "Matano, Jin Matano."
"Mr. Matano," Kono reached his hand out, "I'm Detective Kono," he shook his hand briefly, "This is my partner Detective Ito." He raised his brow at him, "Are you the owner of this establishment?" he looked around satisfied with the place.
"Yes, I am." Jin watched the Detective look around with a satisfied brow.
"I understand that you've reported a child missing," Ito stepped up then.
Jin turned to him, "Yes, Noa, Noa Kaiba," he lined his brow concerned. "We've looked everywhere and nothing." He rubbed at his forehead with an uneasy hand, "We've even tried his cell phone but he won't answer it," he explained.
"He has a cellphone?" Kono perked up when he heard that. "What's the phone number? Maybe we can track it somehow." He faced his partner, "We should also get the information out to dispatch as well," he confirmed strongly.
Ito nodded at that, "Right," he went over to the policeman, "Hurry and put that through to dispatch." He then creased his brow, "And to be sure, comb through the area again. Maybe we've overlooked something," he saw him nod repeatedly.
"Yes sir, I'll do that right now." The policeman gotten the kid's cell number from Jin then relayed the gathered information about the boy to dispatch. After he did that he hurried off to recheck the whole build and surrounding area again, hoping he would find something, anything that would lead to the missing child.
"Now has anyone called the boy's guardian?" Kono faced Jin again.
"I've tried to contact Noa's older brother Seto Kaiba but hadn't been able to reach him yet. You see, he's away on business right now. But I did call Noa's home and talked to Charles, that's Mr. Kaiba's house servant and told him what's going on."
"Who's watching his brothers while Mr. Kaiba's away? Do you know?"
Jin nodded, "Yes, his friends are, Marik Ishtar and his husband Bakura." He rubbed his forehead some, "They're at work still but I've already asked Charles call them to let him know what going on. I also asked him tell Roland to pick up Mr. Kaiba's fiancé Joseph Wheeler and bring him down here right away. So they're all on their way as we speak," he explained in a deeply troubled voice, he creased his brow.
"May I ask who Roland is?" Kono raised a brow for a moment.
"Oh sorry, he's Mr. Kaiba's head security guard." Jin simply explained.
"I see." Kono nodded at that while he glanced over to the nervous guard at the far right. He could understand why Mr. Kaiba assigned a guard by his brothers' side. Seto Kaiba was considered a high profile type person, which made his brothers high risk as well. He then remembered briefly on what happened to Mokuba Kaiba and hoped nothing like that happened to Noa. He lined his face at that.
"What makes you think he's missing, if I may ask?" Ito creased his brow briefly, "What make you think Noa didn't simply run away?" he viewed him close.
"Of course he wouldn't run away," Jin crossed his arms against his chest.
"Do you know if he was upset about anything?" Ito rubbed his chin a bit.
"As far as I know, no, he was doing fine."
"Well I ask that because of Noa's recent adoption by the Kaibas and I take it that he has been receiving therapy sessions here. Did Noa have any problems of any kind, at home or anything in general?" Ito examined his look closely again. He had to make sure the young man wasn't hiding something from them. He sighed deep.
"Well no, not major problems," Jin admitted with a soft brow. He thought back to Noa's sessions and all the work the boy had done, for one the bonding sessions he was doing with Seto and the adjustments of living at his new home. Noa still had a lot of other things to work on but the boy was making great progress. He was reaching his goals the two had set for him and Noa seemed happy about that too. He couldn't see him running away. He couldn't see him doing that to his family.
"So there were problems?" Ito interrupted his thoughts. He hated to ask but knew he had to. In some cases when kids and teens go missing was because they ran away for reasons related to home. He hoped in this case that the boy did simply run away, it would be easy to find him. However, if the boy was abducted by someone then that was whole different case and they needed to move quickly in order to find him safe. He became very serious at that dreadful thought.
Jin shook out of his thoughts and viewed the Detective once again. He drew in a small breath, "Yes but he was working very hard on them and making great progress as well. So I know for a fact that Noa wouldn't runaway Detective Ito," he viewed the Detective's questionable face. He could see the wheels turning.
"So he was happy both at home and whatnot?"
"Yes he was happy. Noa wouldn't do that to his family, he loves them very much. Besides, he scared to go anywhere by himself and he wouldn't leave his things behind either." Jin narrowed his eyes with annoyance now. He couldn't believe these questions, "Now I find these questions becoming ridiculous Detective."
"Please Mr. Matano. We have to address ever aspect." Kono assured him, "But I agree I have a feeling that he didn't runaway either," he viewed over to his partner with a look of a confidence. He wasn't upset with him though, they knew their job was to ask these types of questions to cross off all possibilities.
Ito viewed his partner and gave a nod that he understood. He thought about the kid's story again and sad one at that. And from what Mr. Matano was saying it didn't sound like the kid would just wander off either. This could very well be an abduction of some kind. He was about to suggest releasing what they have to the media when he spotted the guard seriously. He went over to him for a second. "So you supposed to be watching him I presume?" he gave him a grave look.
The guard swallowed a bit rough before he nodded a yes. He knew this probably wouldn't go well. But he considered this to be easy compared to what Mr. Kaiba would to do to him. He frowned some at the thought. Mostly likely kick his ass.
"So where were you then?" Ito couldn't wait to hear this. "What was so important that made you leave your post?" he asked almost accusingly.
"Some kid came up to me and asked if I could help him carry something for him." The guard lined his own brow at the Detective's tone. "I was only gone for a few minutes okay," he defended himself a little. He knew he shouldn't have left his post like that, it was his job and he screwed up on it bad. He swallowed hard.
Detective Ito shook his head slightly, "That's your excuse?" he hardened his face.
"Well what else do want me to say then huh! I fucked up!" The guard finally shouted at him, "Okay I fucked up! I mean how I suppose to know the little brat was going to pick that precise moment to go to the bathroom!" he scowled some.
"HEY! Watch what you say." Jin shot him a glare when he called Noa that.
Kono raised his hand up to calm the man down. "Please come down, no one's here to put blame on anyone," he threw his partner a look to back off.
Ito inhaled a breath and did so. Instead he surveyed the area more when abruptly he furrowed his brow while he spotted a camera up in the corner. "You have security cameras around the property?" he viewed over to Jin with a serious look.
"Why, yes we do." Jin kicked himself for not thinking of that.
"We should take a look at them. Perhaps you've caught something on them." Kono drew in a breath. He deeply hoped they would get luckily with that.
"Yes, of course." Jin nodded his head eagerly. He hoped the cameras were able to trace Noa's steps and would be able to piece together on what happened to him. "If you would follow me, I'll take you to the control room," he was about to leave.
"JIN!"
Jin turned around when he heard his name and lessened his face relieved at who it was, "Joey, thank god you're here!" he rubbed his face for a second.
Joey ran up to them then keeled over out of breath, "Jin…" he panted for air for a moment or two before he regained his composer. He straightened up with a very worried face, "Did you find Noa yet?" he looked around hoping that he did.
Roland who was behind Joey walked straight over to the man that was supposed to be guarding the boy. He started questioning him seriously on what happened and why he didn't follow protocol like he was trained to do. He knew for sure that Mr. Kaiba would be furious with the guy when he got wind of his incompetency.
Jin lined his brow sadly, "No, I'm afraid not yet Joey," he put a consoled a hand on his shoulder to keep him calm. "Don't worry. I'm sure we'll find him real soon."
"Oh my god," Joey ran a shaky hand through his hair while he felt his mind raced with terrible thoughts. He looked around again hoping to spot him and that he would be okay. "Where could he be?" he managed through his worried state.
"Have you been able to get a hold Seto?" Jin creased his brow. He wanted to distract him, "I haven't been able to? All I've been getting is his voice mail."
"That's because he usually keeps his cell turned off when he in a meeting." Joey replied absentmindedly, "But I was able get him and he's on his way right now."
"So you're Mr. Joseph Wheeler I presume?"
Joey looked to the two gentlemen, noticing them for the first time, "Yes."
Kono reached his hand out for a quick shake, "I'm Detective Kono and my partner Detective Ito," he lined his brow at the young teen's very worried face now.
"You must be Roland." Ito pointed his head to the guy and watched as Roland nodded back with a serious brow. He then turned back to the teen, "And you're Seto Kaiba's fiancé I take it?" he reached his hand out for a quick shake as well.
"Yes, yes I am," Joey shook each their hands with hasty. He lined his brow at them eagerly, "Are you here to find Noa?" he pleaded with them, he hoped they were.
"Yes we are."
"Please, you must find Noa." Joey pleaded with the Detectives.
"We'll do everything we can to find him Mr. Wheeler," Kono then turned back to other young man. He didn't want waste any more time, "We should take a look at the security footage now. Time might be of the essence Mr. Matano," he retold.
"Yes of course, right this way," Jin guided the group to where the control room was. Joey followed after them as he reached for his phone again and dialed Noa's number, he been trying to call Noa on his cellphone since the time he was told that he was missing. He pressed his phone to his ear and listened to it ring but still he wouldn't get an answer. He hung up and dialed it again but still got the same.
He inhaled a concerned breath and hung it up again. About a minute later they all entered the control room. Jin walked right over to his employee, "Hey Ikki pulled up the twelve-o-clock footage. We need to take a look at it," he lined his face serious at him. He watched him nod back then proceeded to pull up the footage.
With that, the man by to controls nodded at his boss and proceeded to do so. He pulled up the requested footage and played it for them while everyone leaned in.
"There's Noa." Jin pointed at the screen, "See, he walking down the hallway to where the restrooms are," he watched they boy with a troubled brow.
Kono studied the boy's face, "He doesn't looked distressed or anything," he rubbed at his chin. Then they all watched as Noa entered the bathroom alone then a moment later they saw a man in baseball cap walking toward the bathroom door, he was pushing a cart. "Hold on, pause it for a second," he watched Mr. Matano employer do so and hit pause. He then pointed at the screen, "Who's that?" he furrowed his brow very suspicious at the man who was dressed in a janitor's uniform and appeared to by following the boy. He noted the dark sunglasses the guy wore and how carefully he hid his face from the cameras. That didn't look good, nope not at all. He crossed his arms seriously then.
Jin leaned in for a closer look at that man also but he couldn't see his face. "Don't… know," he inhaled a rough breath, "I haven't seen him before."
"You mean he doesn't work here?" Ito became more alarmed by that.
"No, I don't recognize him." Jin confirmed, "Played it again Ikki."
Ikki nodded and pushed play starting the footage again.
That all watched as the strange man walked into the bathroom. Then a second later the man walked out, grabbed for the cart and pulled into the restroom, another second later he wheeled it out and proceeded to walked down in the opposite direction. "Look how he's still avoiding the cameras," Ito pointed out to his partner observantly. He watched the tape very serious brow as well.
"See if you can found that guy on another camera." Kono watched the screen intensely as he looked for the man again, "Wait, there he is outside."
They all watched again as the man appeared to toss something in bushes before he went over to a white van. They all stood there intensely and watched as the man opened the back, reached for the cart and put it inside the vehicle, after that the man hurried to the driver's side, got in quick and sped off. Kono sucked in a breath, "Damn, I can't read the license plate. Damn," he hit the wall with his fist.
"He must be using something making it unreadable to cameras," Ito explained, he creased his brow more serious, "Looks like this guy knows what he's doing."
"Yeah, I second that Detective," Jin viewed the screen with grave eyes.
Roland watched the screen intensely, this wasn't good. He was about to say something to the Detectives when someone came in and interrupted them.
"Excuse me Detective Kono, Detective Ito."
They all turned around suddenly when they heard a voice behind them. It was the policeman, they all watched as he walked in with something in his hand, "I found these tossed in the bushes out back," the policeman held it out for the Detectives.
Joey peered down the objects in hand. It was Noa's cellphone and his locket. He grabbed them from the policeman at once, "Oh my god, they're Noa's. Oh my god…" he viewed over to the Detectives with frightened eyes, "That man has Noa, I know he does," he feared more. "Please, you have to find him, please."
Both Detective Kono and Detective Ito looked at each other as they thought the same thing. They turned back to the policeman with very serious looks, Kono lined his brow at him and stated, "I think it's time to send out an amber alert."
