There was a loud crunch of metal that Felix recognized as the sound of cy-bug devouring Calhoun's gun. He could hear it transform, then fire, and he winced, though he did force his attention back to the beacon; he didn't allow himself to turn back around. She belonged in Hero's Duty. She would respawn.
He reached inside the machine, his hands navigating carefully around a criss-cross of gears and wires. Laying on the floor of the machine was a broken and dislodged piece; Felix wasn't sure what it was exactly, but he was fairly confident that if he fixed and reinstalled it, the beacon would start up like it was supposed to.
Just as his gloved hand closed around its pieces, there was the sound of shots and a loud metallic clang- Felix half-spun instinctively, though he didn't move the hand still practically intertwined amidst the wires. One cy-bug had wandered disturbingly close the beacon- and Felix. Thankfully, it had been thwarted by the return of the Kohuts. The older Kohut gave Felix a salute, having been the one to to blast the bug, while the new Kohut was helping steady Sergeant Calhoun as she regenerated. Felix nodded, as everything again seemed to be in order, and got back to work.
Again careful to navigate the wires, Felix removed his hand from the machine, opening it palm-up to examine the broken piece of machinery. This his hammer certainly could fix. He tapped the contents of his palm once with his hammer and they rejoined perfectly. Once again, experienced eyes scanned the myriad of wires for the place where the newly-repaired piece belonged; soon, he found it- towards the center of the mass were two unconnected wires, one for each port on the piece he held.
With both hands, he reconnected the loose wires, and suddenly the beacon's humming grew louder and more smooth. Felix closed and latched the panel so that the wiring was again protected and turned around to address the soldiers.
"She should be workin', now," he called over the noise. "Give it a try."
He didn't have to ask twice. Calhoun entered the computer shed for a few moments and reappeared with just enough time to watch the beacon start up again. First the humming grew even louder, then it became warm- for a split second Felix feared overheating- and then finally it released a blinding beam of light. The cy-bugs stopped fighting, all of them drawn immediately to the beam.
He'd done it. The beacon was fixed. He had survived the tower, the cy-bugs, and the sergeant. He smiled even before the soldiers approached him, and the older Kohut gave him a proud- thought forceful- pat on the back.
"Thank you, Felix," Sergeant Calhoun said, her voice sincere.
"You're welcome, ma'am. It's what I do- fixin's the name of the game." He offered a small, timid smile, but it was sincere nonetheless.
"Let's get you outta here, Fix-It," Kohut suggested. "Sarge, 'Self, see ya around."
Farewells were short, and soon Felix was led to the teleporter to the front of the tower, then past saluting soldiers back to Game Central Station, by Kohut. The soldiers, too, had fought hard. Not a singly cy-bug had escaped Hero's Duty. All around, it was a job well done.
