About mid morning, with Jess, Sean, Dave and Morgan by his side, Aaron was taken for what would now become his daily CT scan. After he was returned to the room and everyone helped settle him back in, Dr Peters came in.
"Hi Aaron, it's only me Dr Peters. Sean, Jess, Dave, there's something I'd like to talk to you about outside a minute if that's okay?"
Everyone looked worried as Dr Peters even spoke.
"Is everything okay with my brother Dr Peters?"
"Yeah, I'd just like to talk to you and get consent for something else to help monitor your brother whilst he's in this coma."
"Sure, Derek, you and guys watch over bro for us? We'll be right outside Aaron, promise. And I promise we'll be right back."
A worried looking Sean, Jess and Dave followed the doctor out to just outside the room.
"Everything okay with Aaron, doc?"
"Yeah, he seems to be stable for now, which is good. Dr Thomas says the CT scan was clear of any damage or bleeding in his brain, which is excellent. But I would like to put him on a EEG monitor to monitor electrical signals and responses in his brain, tell us if there's any change and even give us signs he might be coming out of the coma and waking up. Plus when he does wake up, it'll help monitor his brain activity and pressure and makes sure he stays stable. We put most coma patients on EEG monitors to help monitor their brains. It's a simple thing. We just attach electrodes to all around his head and those electrodes are connected to wires that send signals to the computer on which their connected to. It doesn't hurt in the slightest. We just need your consent to put him on the EEG."
"Sounds okay to me. Where do I sign?"
"Appreciate it Sean….." Sean happily signed the consent form Dr Peters handed him.
"I'll be back with a EEG technician in about a half hour to set him up but thanks Sean."
"No problem, anything to help my brother."
There was no change or movement in Aaron as Jess and Sean sat with him all morning. Whilst Dave, Morgan and Garcia stayed in the room all the time, the others took turns so as not to overcrowd Aaron's room too much.
They all watched and even helped when Dr Peters and a technician came in to attach the electrodes to Aaron's head and set up the EEG monitoring.
But still Aaron didn't move or show any response.
Even when Sean, Dave, Morgan and some of the guys all helped move Aaron's body about, in the way Dr Smith had shown them, there was no response or sign of life from Aaron.
No one noticed the time until two nurses came in with a tray of supplies.
"Hey Agent Hotchner, how you doing? How's our patient doing guys? We've bought his meds, a fresh urine bag, fresh IV and nutrition bags, and a few other supplies. After we're done we'll bring your lunch Agent Hotchner. Could most of you leave the room for a few minutes? We need to do our checks, change his urine bag and his other bags, give him his meds, things like that. Hope that's okay Agent Hotchner? Everything's only to make you and keep you comfortable and to help you."
Whilst everyone except Dave, Sean and Jess left the room, the nurses got to work and were soon finished. They left briefly before returning with lunch for Aaron.
Whilst Morgan, Jack, both Matts, Dave and Spencer helped sit and hold Aaron upright in a sitting position, Sean and Jess expertly syringe fed Aaron through his nasal gastric tube.
Each time he was syringe fed, Aaron could feel his stomach fill up and the liquidised food being syringed up his nose and going down his throat. He could feel everything anyone did to his body, including all the moving about but he had no control over anything and it was like his body was deadweight and unresponsive to him as he remained in the pitch black room. Between everything that was happening to his body and his constant struggles to find a way out of the place he was in, all the while hearing voices of anyone who talked to him, like his brother, his sister in law, his son, whose voice was like an angel in heaven to him, listening but not able to respond back, all tired him out so much he constantly felt exhausted.
After keeping him sitting upright for several minutes after Sean and Jess had finished feeding Aaron, the guys holding him upright gently lay him back down and got him comfortable in bed again.
"Hey Jess, Sean, you guys have been with Aaron all morning. Why don't you let me, Morgan and a few of the others take you guys down to get something to eat for lunch and give you guys a break? Garcia, and the others will stay with Aaron but you both need to eat and take breaks from this room sometimes. I'll pay for all food and drink…..and even a short break from this room would do you guys good."
"Thanks Dave. Sure. We'll be right back Aaron, bro. Promise. Come on Jess. You need to eat too."
"I don't wanna leave Aaron, Sean, but you go."
"Jess, you go, I, Monty and some of the others are all ready to sit with him. He won't be alone for a second, promise." Garcia, Monty and some of the others stood just inside the door. As Jess reluctantly stood up, Garcia hurried over to take the hand Jess had been holding and to take Jess's place to reassure Jess that Aaron wouldn't be left alone for a second. Will took Sean's place on Aaron's other side as Sean reluctantly stood up. Neither he nor Jess wanted to leave Aaron but they knew Dave was right and allowed themselves to be led out of the room and taken down to the cafeteria for some lunch.
Aaron remained motionless for the most of the day, even after Jess, Sean, Dave and a whole group of others returned from a trip to the apartment, bringing framed photos and other things from Aaron's home, plus things for Jack like books he could read to his dad. Whilst they'd been gone, Garcia and Monty had set up so that Aaron's favourite album, the Beatles white album, was playing on some speakers when Jess and everyone returned. Everyone helped Jess and Sean set up the room so that it was filled with the photos and everything they'd bought from the apartment.
At near half three, Will and Chris returned from the school run. Everyone but Dave, Jess, Sean, Garcia, Morgan and Stephen were in the room next door.
"Hi dad, I'm back! How's he been Aunt Jess, Uncle Sean? Has he woken up at all or moved at all yet?" Jack ran into his dad's room but stopped when he saw the tube going up his dad's nose and the EEG electrodes and wires covering his dad's head and looked at it with worried confusion as he had no idea what it was "What's that going up dad's nose Aunt Jess? And what's all that on his head?"
"That's so he can be fed some food, Jack. It doesn't hurt him but whilst your dad's in the coma, he can't eat normally so in order to get food into his body, he has to have liquidised food syringed down the tube, which goes into his stomach. It's only so he can eat and keep his strength up and whilst he's in this coma, he can't eat normally like we can and it's the only way he can eat and we can get food into his body."
"But it doesn't hurt him?"
"No, Jack, it doesn't hurt him, it's only so he can eat food and keep his strength up so he can fight to wake up and come back to us and fight to get better."
"Oh right, but why's is dad's head covered in wires? He looks a little weird….."
"That's only an EEG monitor, it helps monitor the signals in your dad's brain. It'll help in showing if your dad's brain responds and it'll tell us when he starts waking up. The electrodes on his head send signals via the wires to the computer and machine that read them. Even the slightest change will be noticed by the computer. Most coma patients are put EEG monitors to help monitor their brains."
"It doesn't hurt him though?"
"Not in the slightest buddy. He doesn't even feel the electrodes attached to his head."
"Oh right. That's okay then. Has he moved at all today or opened his eyes at all?"
"Not yet buddy. But hopefully really soon he will, especially now you're here."
"Hi Uncle Aaron, it's me Henry. Jack and my dad told me what happened. He looks really bad dad…."
"I know he does buddy, but he's doing okay. He's just sleeping really deep right now. Why don't me and Chris take you guys to get sodas for Jack and you guys whilst Jack sits with his dad?"
"Okay."
Will and Chris took Henry, Meg, Markayla and Sam to the room next door whilst Jack went towards his dad.
Only after he'd taken his Uncle Sean's place and was sitting by his dad, did Jack notice everything in the room that had been bought from home. He looked at it all as Jess stood up and let Jack take her place at his dad's side. "This room looks awesome, dad! But do we have to listen to those boring Beatles again?" Jack didn't really care much for his dad's favourite music album, which his dad quite often played.
"It's your dad's favourite album, kiddo….."
"He plays it way too much at home Uncle Dave. It's almost the only album he listens to."
"How about…" Sean stood up to let Jess sit in his seat by Aaron whilst he went to the CD player to change the music. "How's this one instead Jack?" He held up a CD that was a soundtrack from one of the Harry Potter movies. "Or this…" Sean held up a CD of movie soundtracks.
"That one, Uncle Sean. It's got Star Wars on right?"
"Yeah, amongst others. Sorry bro, but Jack's right, Beatles are boring….." Everyone couldn't help but smile as Sean started playing the CD "Thanks Uncle Sean, that's much better. Sorry dad but until you wake up, we get to choose the music, okay?"
"Now that's an incentive for you Aaron. Oh Jack, kiddo, today your dad's had quite a few friends come by worried about him. Their all in the next room with the rest of the team. You know a couple of them. All of them are here to help keep watch over your dad and everyone's worried for him and here for him. How about I take you five next door, say hi to some old friends and meet the ones you guys haven't met yet? Then I'll bring you back here so you can tell your dad all about your day at school?"
"Sure, Uncle Dave. Dad's not going anywhere, are you dad? We'll be right back, promise. I love you though, dad. Please will you wake up soon?" Jack kissed his dad's hand before getting up and going with Dave, Garcia, Henry, Meg, Markayla and Sam to the room next door.
Soon enough Jack returned and sat back down next to his dad again and began happily chatting and telling his dad all about a science experiment his teacher had been showing his class and about a kickball game he and some of his friends had played during lunch.
Whilst he listened to his son's sweet voice, Aaron was still searching for a way out of the room when he felt a presence behind him and heard a very familiar voice. He turned around and saw nothing but pitch black but could still hear her voice and feel her presence. It was definitely Haley, his late wife who had been murdered when Jack was four and a half. Aaron still loved her so much and still missed her and Haley would always love Aaron so much.
"Haley? What are you doing here? Where are you? Why I can't I see you?"
"I'm right here Aaron, I always will be right with you. I'm here to help you fight your way out. Jack still needs you Aaron, your team still needs you. I'm here to help you fight your way back. You don't know this but last night Jack and I met up in one his dreams again, like we often do so he can talk to me and see me."
"He does love those dreams, Haley. They mean so much to him."
"I've been watching you and seen what's happened. I've been watching over you and making sure you don't die and hold on and fight. I know your fighting your hardest Aaron but I'm here to help you keep fighting and find a way through back to our son and everyone who loves you. You trust me right?"
"Course I do, I've always trusted you with my life."
"Then come with me, I want to show you some things, and help you find a way for you to fight back to life."
"I am fighting Haley but nothing seems to work and I'm stuck here. I still can't see you. I can hear you. Where are you?"
"I'm right here. Let's go somewhere more familiar, then you'll be able to see me, Aaron. Take my hand."
Aaron suddenly felt someone take hold of his left hand and, before he knew it, he was back in front of the front door of his and Haley's old house, where they'd been a happy family with Jack until Haley had divorced Aaron because of his job, not because she stopped loving him. She never stopped loving him. He'd sold the house after Haley's death, not able to bear for him and Jack to live in it again. He seemed to be all alone as he opened the door and went inside.
"Haley?" He called out to the empty house.
"In here Aaron….." A voice came from the living room and, going inside, Aaron found Haley sitting on the couch.
"Welcome home honey. Come sit down….." She patted the couch seat beside her. She still looked as beautiful to Aaron as she ever had done. Aaron went and sat on the couch beside her and took her hands in his.
"What are we doing here? In our house?"
"We're going to find a way to help you wake up. Your just in time, the first show on TV is about to start….." Haley switched the TV on with the remote and she and Aaron sat there watching what seemed like a birds eye view of Aaron lying in the coma in the hospital. Jack was sitting on his right chatting happily away to his dad. Jess was sitting the other side. Sean was standing behind her with a hand on one of her shoulders. Dave, Morgan, Garcia and Spencer were all in the room. It was like it was live action show of a camera looking down at the room and Aaron lying in the bed. There was clear sound and both he and Haley could hear Jack talking, as well as hear all the others talking.
"That's what's happening right now Aaron. In the next room….." Haley switched channels and a birds eye camera view of another hospital room came on the screen. Aaron recognised everyone in the room.
"There's Alex and James. That's Jack Garrett with his team, there's Andi Swann, Ashley Seaver, Tia Canning, Matt, Stephen, Will, Chris, Kate, J.J, Sam Cooper. There's Meg, Henry, Sam, Markalya. I don't understand, why are they all in the same room together?"
"That's the room right next door to where your lying. Apart from J.J, Kate, Stephen and Matt, everyone arrived at the hospital and their all really worried for you. That and their all staying at Dave's and Matt's houses. That's how many people you have with you right now at the hospital, all hoping and praying you wake up. Aaron there are so many people who your worrying right now, but no one more than our son. Here…..oh he's really grown hasn't he?" Haley switched back to the channel that showed Aaron's room. Aaron stared sadly at his son, hating himself that he was doing this his son, the person he loved more than his own life. He then saw Jess looking so worried and sad and saw the same face on his brother's face and the others' faces. He noticed everything Jess and everyone had bought from the apartment he and Jack lived in.
Haley then switched channels and they sat watching movies of Jack and Aaron together, of them with Sean, with Jess, with Dave and others on the team. Whilst watching the movies, Aaron could still hear Jack talking to him, like the channel they'd been watching of Aaron in the hospital was playing on another TV nearby.
