Chapter 10

'Here it is; the school.' Kevin announced, 'Better watch your step, lots of infected activity here.'

They trespassed through the fence, and tried to get in through the back door. Unfortunately, it was locked.

'Damnit, we gotta find another way, follow me.' Kevin said.

They trotted around the school, and found a sliding window.

'Let's say we get a car,' Ed said to Eddy, 'what then?'

Eddy closed his eyes and scratched his beard.

'We're gonna go to the McGee Dam.' Eddy said.

'McGee Dam? What's that?' Rose asked, confused. Kevin opened the window, and crawled through it. Rose followed him in, the two Eds entered last.

'I'll tell ya'll about it later.' Eddy replied.

Kevin went over to another door which leads to the school's garage. The car was there. 'Sweet, we found the babe boys.' He said.

They went over to the car, an old looking Ford Pickup truck. Kevin opened the hood to take the battery, but to his surprise.

'What! It isn't here!' He screamed.

'Well then where is it?' Ed said.

'I don't know! It isn't here where I left it!' Kevin shrieked.

'Bullshit! Why did we take the chance to walk all the way over here through infested activity? Where to now?' Eddy asked.

'Anywhere but here.' He replied.

'Guys! We got company!' Rose announced.

The door started knocking. They were coming in.

'Let's get outta here,' Eddy said. He busted through the door which led to the main hallway of the school. He was followed by the other three, and closed the door behind him. He blocked it with a barricade, and crouched down. 'Ssh, there's more here.'

The clicker master, Eddy, led the pack. He saw a way they could take which could lead them out. There was a clicker blocking the way, and he got his shiv at the ready. He made his way over to him, pounced at him and killed him instantly.

'Easy does it,' he said.

Unfortunately, he made too much noise, and attracted two other clickers and a runner. He got out his rifle and started shooting. One got way too close, but he was saved by Kevin's shotgun.

'A little too close, McGee?' Kevin whispered.

Eddy nodded. He then crouch walked until he knew the place was clear. He headed down a few rooms and hallways, until they bumped their way into the gymnasium. They blocked the door behind them, but they were in for a surprise.

At the far end of the gym, was another door. The door flung open, and a huge grizzly ugly looking upgraded clicker made its way into the gym.

'What the hell is that!' Rose freaked.

'Bloater, get your shotguns ready.' Eddy said.

Eddy went around for the flank, while Ed took the right side. Kevin threw a Molotov at the bloater. It went up in flames as it cried in horror. The two Eds then shot their shotguns to finish him off.

'There's more dudes,' Kevin said, as he shot two runners with one shot. Eddy went up to one and took him down with his baseball bat. He hit the runner so hard his head exploded. Ed just shot afar from a distance with his pistol.

'Right I guess that's the last of 'em. Let's get a move on.' Eddy said. 'That cargo box, get up there and get out through the window.

Ed went over to the other side of the gym and started gathering some loot.

'Ed, it's too risky! Get your ass over here.' Kevin shouted across the room as he gave Eddy a boost up the cargo. Eddy lifted Kevin up, then Rose.

'Comin,' Ed said, stuffing alcohol and bandages into his backpack.

'Watch out! Behind you!' Rose screamed.

Four runners were coming straight for Ed.

'Shit! Out of ammo!' Eddy said. Kevin got in a few critical shots. Ed shot a few. One got way too close and started struggling with him.

'Ed!' Rose screamed in horror.

Ed punched the runner in the face, and then finished him off with his pipe. But unexpectedly, another one jumped at him. It made a go for it, and bit Ed on the left arm.

Ed screamed in pain.

'Ed!' Eddy jumped down from the cargo box and hit the runner on the head with his bat. 'Oh, fuck, fuck, fuuuuuuuuck!' He said, frustrated.

Ed fell on his back on the floor. The dust flew away from the dusty gym floor. Blood started flowing from Ed's arm.

'No!' Rose screamed as she jumped off from the tall box, nearly tumbling over as she ran over to Ed. She hugged Ed, crying.

Ed's face showed no expression, he had his eyes closed, and he was smiling.

'I'll be waiting for you in heaven, Eddy.' He murmured.

Kevin threw a medkit at Eddy. He didn't even bother to catch it. He just stared at Ed. 'It's too late, Kev.'

'Get out of here, and take care of this sweetie.' Ed said, coughing, 'Get out, now!'

Eddy dragged Rose from Ed; she struggled as she kept crying. The both of them jumped up and went out of the school through the window. Eddy didn't feel anything, he too was expressionless.

They could hear gunshots as Ed tried to defend them from even more infected.

'This way, I know a house over here,' Kevin said. They jumped over the fence and locked the door into the house.

Silence engulfed the entire house. Rose was still crying, devastated. Eddy just went over to a couch and sat down. He ran through his hair, frustrated.

'I'm, I'm sorry Eddy.' Kevin said.

Eddy wiped a tear off his cheek. 'It's not your fault.'

'It's my fault,' Rose said as she walked over to Eddy. She crouched down and cried on Eddy's lap. 'I'm sorry for everything!'

Eddy angrily pushed her away. She fell onto the floor. She kept crying. 'It's all because of you fucking Ed and Double D is dead!'

Kevin quietly watched Eddy as he mourned over the death of his two and only comrades. He patted him on his shoulder.

'Eddy, I know how you feel.' Kevin said, 'Once upon a time… I had someone that I cared about… And in this world it's only good for one thing; getting ya killed.'

Eddy looked at Kevin. 'They were the only people who stuck by my side all these years.'

'His name was Freddy, a pathetic idiot but a good partner… He-uh, he turned, one day. He told me about it, and then he ran away… This was his home, and I found him one day. He was dead, he killed himself.'

Kevin sighed, 'And we just have to move on.'

Rose didn't want to bother Eddy and walked over to the other side of the house. A few minutes of mourning, Eddy was ready to move on. They heard the sound of an engine starting. The two men walked to the other side of the house.

'Look what I found,' Rose said, wiping off the last of her tears.

There was an old, beaten up Chevy pickup.

'Outta the car,' Kevin demanded.

'Okay, jeez.' Rose said, rolling her eyes and stood behind. Kevin checked what was under the bonnet.

'Hey! That's my battery!' Kevin said, 'Fucker Freddy must've stolen it from my stash.'

Kevin then sat at the driver's seat and gave it a little kick. 'Looks like the battery's drained but the cells are kicking. We need to give it a push, and then recharge it later.'

'Rose can drive, you know how to, right?' Eddy asked. She nodded.

'Check the house if you want anything,' Kevin said.

Eddy went back into the house to search for loot. He found a reasonable amount of supplies. While he was crafting a few shivs, he saw a note on a desk. Curious, he took the note and read it.

Dear Kevin,

If you're reading this by any chance, I just want to let you know that I hate your rotten guts. I know the chances are unlikely because you're too scared to come to this part of town, but I grew tired of this shitty town and your attitude. I wanted more from life, and I already knew that my life was fucked ever since the outbreak.

Oh, and that stupid battery you kept moaning about, I got it. But I guess it's too big a risk to go out of town, with all these infected roaming around. But I guess it's a million times better than spending another day with someone with a fucked up attitude like yours.

I hope you die a slow, painful death.

Yours truly,

"Fucker" Freddy

Eddy took the note and went back over to the garage. He stuffed all the supplies into his backpack.

'You ready to go?' Kevin asked.

Eddy nodded, 'Hey, uh, Kev.' Eddy said, giving the note to Kevin, 'I found this at the desk, figured you should have it.'

Kevin murmured the entire letter, then tore it up into pieces. 'Well fuck you too Freddy… Let's get a move on.'

Rose climbed into the seat. Eddy and Kevin pushed the truck onto the road.

'I hear infected, let's get moving.' Rose announced.

The two men grunted and pushed hard, they finally found a downhill slope. They pushed it and the truck got up to a nice speed.

'Start her up!' Eddy shouted across the road.

Sure enough, Rose kicked the engine alive. On the far end of the road, and from the left and right sides, were infected coming straight at them.

'I ain't got enough ammo, let's just bail,' Eddy said.

'I second that,' Kevin grinned.

They hopped onto the back of the truck and Rose bolted the truck down the road and made a swift left turn and they made their way back to the safe part of town.

'Right, this would do,' Kevin said, 'Stop the car,'

Rose stepped on the brakes and Kevin and Eddy jumped off the back of the truck.

Kevin made his way to the safe house.

'Thanks, Kev,' Eddy said, patting on his shoulder.

'Anytime, dork.' Kevin grinned. 'Listen, uh, sorry about Ed and Double D.'

Eddy shook his head, 'It's alright. You gotta move on.'

Kevin smiled. 'Get the fuck out of my town now.'

Eddy nodded. He took the driving seat, and headed on out of town.
