I was once again awoken by the lovely voice of Daughtry ringing out from my phone. My eyelids feel like they are glued to my eye balls. Sleep is calling me, but I have to get up. School is something that I really don't want to get up for, the first day to be exact. The first day at the High school building, something I really don't want to go to. At least I know I pasted that test. Of course I did. But that also means I will be in a class called advanced rune making and recognition, a class full of seniors. I'm really going to die in that class. It feels as if the song gets louder, commanding me to get up. My hand somehow finds the phone, my eyelids peel open, and I shut off my alarm. I sit up in my bright green bed, the comforter getting thrown up and over my legs. I swing my legs over the side of the bed and lower myself into my velvet green chair. My body sinks into the soft green velvet, goose bumps appear on my arms as they adjust to the temperature without my comforter.
I take off my sweat pants and exchange them for my uniform skirt, the same black, blue, and white stripes on it. After that I slip on my shin-high dark blue socks and pull on my black Mary Jane shoes. I take off my baggy pajama t-shirt, slip and clip on a bra. Then my white, silk shirt, is on and adjusted. The little blue vest is buttoned and my red tie is tied and hanging around my neck-yes I learned how to tie a tie. I brush my wavy red hair and let is cascade down my back. I added a little bit of mascara to my eyelashes and added a dash of cherry red lip gloss to my lips.
Once I decided that I looked presentable, a started to push my chair out of my room and down the hall. But, after I forgot my backpack and had to go and fetch it off of my bedroom floor. Then, I make my way down the long, narrow hallway. Suddenly, the bright lime green door ahead of me opens, and out walks Anna. Her uniform is affixed perfectly, nothing out of place. On top of her shoulder is her worn out leather messenger bag. Her dark, curly hair is full of bobby pins, trying to hold her hair down from springing up and looking like an afro. She turns toward me after her door is shut.
"Ri-Ri!" She screeches at the top of her lungs. She races over to my chair and envelopes me into a hug.
"I just texted Grace 'cause she was freaking out about going to the high school building, but I told her that we'll all have pretty much the same classes. Considering we all signed up for the same classes, besides your fancy-smancy senior rune recognition class." Anna rambles on.
"Sorry for the fact that both of my parents have angel blood!" I argue.
"But I still love you, unfortunately..." She trails off, which earns her a smack on the arm.
"OW! SOMEONE'S IN A MOOD!"
"Isn't she always?" Inquires a new voice.
We cock our heads to the side to see the tall figure of my older brother. Once, my mom showed me a picture of her and dad when they were sixteen and seventeen. Let's just say that Max looks exactly like my dad in that picture. Girls basically throw themselves at him and his group of friends. I don't exactly look like my mom, while she has freckles all over here body, I just have a dusting of them on my cheeks. We have the same creamy porcelain skin, but my hair is wavier and a shade darker than hers. My mom says that I am prettier than she was when she was my age, but I don't agree with that statement at all.
"I am not! Anna just makes me mad sometimes."
"I know she drives me cray-cray!" Maggie's voice now enters the conversation. She pushes past Max and perches herself on top of my lap. Let's just say that Maggie is one of those people who does what she wants not giving a shit about what other people think.
"Don't you have a testosterone group to get to Max?" Maggie asks with a smirk on her face. Maggie also has a filter problem.
"Don't you guys have some outcasts to get to?" Thomas asks. Great, let's just add Luke and Annie in this conversation!
"Come along young Thomas, let's leave the girls to their gossiping," Max says, "Probably gushing about Julian…" He runs away as I sing towards his arm to hit him, closely followed by Thomas.
"TO THE KITCHEN I NEED FOOD NOW!" Maggie shouts, "Anna, would you be a dear and push my cripple friend and I to the kitchen?" she says while batting her big brown eyelashes.
Anna huffs and blows a stray curl from her forehead, "Fine"
Suddenly, my phone buzzes in my pocket, I pull it out and look at the message typed on the screen.
EVAN CHEATED ON ME WITH SELA DAVID :,( -Claire
Crap.
I type back to her:
Well he's not part of our group anymore! Srry gurl! – Ri-Ri
Immediately she types back:
Well….I might not be part of our group either…-Claire
I looked away from my phone and blinked really hard. I didn't read that right, Claire's not leaving and neither is Evan. What is happening?
What do you mean? - Ri-Ri
I got a text back immediately:
Mom and Dad are having me homeschooled from now on, believe me I didn't do this willingly. –Claire
Sadness engulfs me. Claire was one of my really good friends, how was I going to survive high school at the Academy without her?
Okay…Bye Claire – Ri-Ri
Bye –Claire.
"Ri-Ri?" questioned Anna, "You there? You kind of got lost in your brain there!"
I shake my head to clear my thoughts. My really muddled thoughts. When I turn my head towards them, I am met with concerned faces.
"Evan cheated on Claire and both of them aren't going to the Academy, they're being homeschooled." I say.
Anna gasps and Maggie just looks sad and a little infuriated. She never liked Evan, and this situation just adds fuel to her little fire.
"Well, that's that and we'll just move on and deal with it," Anna states, "Now off to breakfast, my tummy's grumbling!"
We sped down the hallway and into the grand kitchen. The smell of sizzling bacon, scrambled eggs, and toast traveled up my nose, making my mouth water. Once we had full plates we sat down at the table with all the other siblings. Luke and Annie were at the end of the table playing some demon and Shadowhunter card game that has become quite popular in the 3rd grade. Tommy and Max are in a heated conversation with Dad and Uncle Alec about different techniques they should use in gym class. That's Max and Tommy for you, always thinking about fighting and violence.
And then there's Anna, Maggie, and I talking about what we are going to do after school. I'm just praying that I will get through the day without crying to embarrassing myself. Finally, Dad announces that we have to leave for school and the knot in my stomach increases. I see Max and Tommy smirking and playfully shoving each other-they really are ready to fight in gym today.
The bluish watery substance that makes up the portal stands in front of us, and we get ready to go through and portal to the Academy. The knot in my stomach feels like a giant rock weighing me down. Max and Tommy run through the portal first, their cackles of excitement cut off once they enter the watery substance. Next Luke and Annie run through the portal- Annie shoves Luke inside and jumps in after him. Anna and Maggie make their way through the portal and then it's my turn. I tilt my head back and cast one more glance at my parents and family. Then, I push my chair through the portal and feel the weird falling sensation engulf me and my thoughts.
Eyes. That's the first thing I see when I wheel myself towards the high school building. The eyes are downcast in my direction, confirming the rumors about the wheelchair girl to be the truth. My cheeks burn a scalding ref color-matching the color of my ruby red hair. Whispers are shared between girls and guys point and laugh at me. I've already gotten used to this though, years of practicing my poker face and ignoring the comments, staring, and pointing.
The entire freshmen class is ushered into the auditorium for orientation, while the upperclassmen are sent to their study hall classrooms. Anna, Maggie, and I sit near the front-where I park my chair on the side of their comfy theatre seats. Out of the tops of heads and faces I spot a pale face with kind gray eyes and brown hair, with two other people- one with brown hair and one with black hair. Tessa, Grace, and Reuben. Our Outcast friends.
They look around so lost, like a little kid at the mall that lost his mother. Finally Reuben spots us and points Tessa and Grace in our direction as we wave them over. Tessa plops herself onto the chair next to Anna, Grace and Reuben follow in suit. We chat quietly about our summers-even though we spent most of it together-and wait patiently for the orientation to begin.
The hairs on my neck start to prickle, I feel a gaze upon me. Not that I didn't always feel someone staring at me, but this felt different. I crane my neck around to see if I see anyone staring at me. I look around for a little bit until I connect eyes with someone. I know those eyes, a bright blue that would be beautiful if they were not so full of hate. The eyes that belonged to the person that had caused so much pain in my life, the person that started it all.
William Herondale.
Also one of my brother's best friends.
He smirks at me, a smirk that says so many things. My brother sits beside him, laughing and horsing around with Tommy, Jem, and…Julian.
Julian, the boy I have had a crush one ever since I met him in kindergarten. That time in kindergarten when he helped me back into my wheelchair was one of the last interactions that we've had. Sure, I see him all the time back at the Institute when my father trains him and a bunch of Max's other friends. But, it was one of those awkward interactions where we ran into each other in the hallway and exchanged awkward hellos. I never saw the sensitive side that he showed me back in kindergarten ever again. My guess is that he doesn't have one anymore. However, he is the quietest of my brother's friends, the one who never adds onto the taunting they give me.
I am awoken from my reverie by the tapping of a microphone. Up on stage behind a podium with the Academy crest on it, is the Headmaster of the Academy. He has charcoal gray hair, and stands around five foot nine. His faced looks aged, but he might be younger than he looks. His runes are visible around his wrists, not the only person in the room with runes on. Everyone has runes- permanent and temporary- that were put on us by adults. Although I put my own on and I mark runes on my siblings.
The Headmaster opens his mouth to speak, "Good morning, my name is Mr. Cartmark and I am your Headmaster. Welcome to the high school building freshmen, this is the time where all of your school work and skills are morphed and put to the test. Some of you may think that you are the most skilled Shadowhunter that has ever lived,"
I shot a glance at Max, who is chuckling and high fiving his friends. Typical. Max does think he is the best Shadowhunter who ever lived. My Mom said that my Dad was the same way, except this time she said that Max will surpass the skills that Jace was gifted with. It must be all the angel blood Max and I have.
"Even so, we have had many students who had this case. Turns out they weren't the best Shadowhunter ever. To be a Shadowhunter doesn't mean you are just a skilled fighter. Sure, you might be able to hit something with a big, shiny sword. But, can you identify the demon, what if your parabatai or someone with you gets hurt? Can you apply an affective iratze?
This school will give you all the tools, guidelines, and skills that will make you a good Shadowhunter, or teacher or politician or whatever you will choose as your path in life. You just have to be willing to take it."
He then walks off the stage and we are dismissed to our Study Hall classrooms. As we walk (wheel) out of the auditorium we are handed out schedule by upperclassmen. The older girl (I'm guessing a junior or senior) looks down at me, with an expression that is mixed with horror and pity. Pity is the worst emotion people around me can have. Pity just reminds me that other people think down about me and think I'm weaker than them.
Once in my study hall, that is categorized by last name, we go over rules. My opinion is that there are too many rules.
No running
No fighting with each other outside of gym class
No Marking each other without a teacher's consent
No plagiarizing
No public displays of affection
The list goes on and on.
We are told the rules in the Study Hall and are told that we are going to walk through our schedules. I look down at my schedule and observe the kind of classes that I am in.
Period 1: Advanced Demonology 1- Mrs. Portock
Period 2: Gym/Combat Training 1- Mr. Metz/ Mrs. Simonton
Period 3: Study Hall- Mrs. Danner
Period 4: Advanced Herb and Healing Potions 1- Mr. Erler
Period 5: Advanced Shadowhunter Literature 1- Mr. Harrison
Period 6: Speech 1- Mr. Baranoski
Period 7: Advanced Rune Making and Recognition IIII- Mrs. Marr
I examine the schedule and look at the room number for my first class, Demonology. Perfect, Dad already taught me a lot about Demons, how to identify them, and know which demon is which. I start to roll my way down the hall towards the room, it's very difficult though because everyone is so tall. I end up at the end of the science hallway in front of the class labeled Mrs. Portock. I shove open the door and am greeted by a ton of freshmen students crowded around the desk chatting with each other. I spot Max and some of his friends near the middle of the crowd.
I wheel my way over to him and poke him in the back. He spins around and gives his best smirk- looking so much like dad. When he realizes that there is no face to meet his, he looks down at me. I smile up at him, but I immediately see his face fall. My eyebrows knit together in confusion, why is he looking at me like that?
"Iris, go away." He hisses at me through gritted teeth.
"What? No! I just wanted to-
"You wanted wrong," He cuts me off, "Go away and sit with your little outcast friends." He begs me.
I give him a glare and spin myself around. But what I am met with immediately makes my day worse.
Julian Blackthorn is standing in the doorway.
Next to a girl named Natalie Lopez.
And they are holding hands and kissing each other.
