Geneva faced Lauren in a cold and calm manner, any signs of nervousness or uncertainty was well hidden. The doctor slowly put a notebook she was holding onto the nearest table, her eyes never left the Maeve's.
"We do have a past. I am that person you met so many years ago at Yale," Geneva said slowly. "Ever since I met you, you have challenged my beliefs. Even now you're still doing it."
Lauren wasn't sure if she should speak or if she should let Geneva continue on. One moment Geneva swore that she wasn't the Jennifer Monroe from her past and now she was admitting to it. Edward probably gotten into that thick skull of hers and convinced her to admit it.
"I swore from that day on that I never wanted to see you again, but here we are. Our paths are intertwined in this crazy thread of life. Since I couldn't avoid you, I changed my oath from that night. I wanted to destroy you, to humiliate you, but then again it didn't go as plan."
"Why?"
"Pettiness. It is immature to hold a grudge for so long. Now that I think about it, it was incredibly stupid of me to feel that way." Honestly this is what she should be thinking, but inside there was that little blackened part in her heart that knew this was false. She wanted to make Lauren feel what she felt all those years ago. In reality she could talk about making Lauren suffer, but then when it came to actually doing it; she couldn't bring herself to do it.
"It wasn't stupid."
"No it was. It shouldn't have happened."
"Because I'm a human and you're fae."
"Precisely."
"If I knew about the Fae back then, everything would have made much more sense."
"Unfortunately it wouldn't have helped either."
"It might have." Lauren avoided eye contact with Geneva and her eyes wandered towards her feet.
That slight bit of hope would have melted the coldness of Geneva's heart if it was said during their medical school days. "I did not come here so that we could bring up the past. I came here discuss your punishment. As the Maeve, I am the leader and representative of the Dark. Although we do have an unsavory past, I will not let that effect my decisions regarding you and your welfare. You will suffer the consequences of your actions based on the laws of the Fae. Your crime is for the betrayal of the Morrigan, which is an act of treason. All acts of treason are punishable by death. If there is any changes to that decree, I will let you know, other that I find no other reason to speak with you. Continue on with your work." After her speech, Geneva turned away from the doctor and headed straight towards the door.
"Thank you for not being bias," Lauren said stoically.
"It is my job to be."
"You still haven't changed."
"If you are referring to my hatred towards human then you are correct, "Geneva said through clenched teeth. She turns abruptly to face Lauren, when she said it.
"It's because of me right?"
"I see no reason to bring this subject up. This conversation will end now." Geneva turns back around and walks out the door before Lauren could say anything.
She always had this complex of being superior towards human, but her first experience with hatred towards them could have been because of me," Lauren said out loud.
Lauren was finishing her anatomy final and what surprised her was that Jennifer wasn't even in the class taking it. She did not show up. Lauren knew she should focus on the exam, but she couldn't stop thinking about the other night. Jennifer just stormed off after their conversation. It was so awkward trying to explain to everyone what happened, without getting into all the personal details. From the corner of her eye she saw Edward go up and hand the test to Dr. Selzer. Lauren immediately finished the last question on her final, so that she could catch up to Edward and ask him about Jennifer. She walked up to the front table and handed the final to Dr. Selzer and wished him a good a summer. Afterwards she walked quickly out the door, hoping that Edward was not too far ahead. She saw the curly-haired man a few meters away and called out to him.
"Edward, wait up!"
Edward slowed his pace down and turns towards the blonde. "Hey, what's up?"
"Not bad. I'm just glad that it's over. How well did you think you did?"
"I think I did pretty well on it. I'm glad I studied the cranial nerves, because he used a lot of questions about it."
"He did. I was surprised Jennifer didn't show up."
"Oh, she switched it to another time because she had a schedule conflict."
"I'm surprised Selzer let her."
"Oh, you know Jennifer. She always has to have her way."
"Yeah, that's her all right."
"Do you want to grab some coffee? There are some things I want to discuss with you."
"Sure, I have time."
The two friends headed to a local coffee shop and grabbed a table in the corner after getting their coffees.
"What do you want to talk about?" Lauren asked. She slowly took a sip from her coffee.
"About Jennifer. I know she comes off as arrogant, abrasive and stubborn, but she is actually very kind
"I have yet to see a kind Jennifer."
"She is to her friends and family."
"I guess I wasn't a friend to begin with," Lauren said bluntly.
Edward grimaces a little from Lauren's statement, but he continues on. "All her life Jennifer has been brought up to think she was special and because of her high birth, she did not need to show respect to those that weren't on par with her. Her parents were also very conservative in their values and Jennifer was brought up with their beliefs. When her parents passed away, she held tightly to their beliefs since those were what reminded her of them. "
Lauren stared in shock, after listening to Edward's explanation. So there was more to Jennifer's struggles than she let on. Jennifer's beliefs weren't just classic snobbery, it was maintaining her family's values. That is why it was so hard for her to confess. "Shouldn't she be explaining this to me?"
"You know how Jennifer is; she is one of the most stubbornness people you will ever meet."
"Yes I do," Lauren said sadly. "I think it is best for us to speak again, in a more peaceful manner."
"I do too." There was a moment of silence before Edward spoke again. "You do know that she liked you, ever since that day you guys had to clean up after anatomy lab."
"No, I didn't."
"She was being immature by being mean to you."
"It seems like there's a lot of things she needs to work on."
"Yes, I hope a better friend can help her."
"You are a good friend Edward."
"Thanks, but I don't think she takes what I say seriously." Edward glances at his watch and gets up. "I have another exam to head to. I hope you get a chance to speak with her." He picks up his cup of coffee and his backpack.
"I'll try. Good luck with your exam."
"Thank you. Good luck with the rest of your exams, although I don't think you need it." Edward said with a smile as he heads towards the exit.
Lauren sat in her seat, silently contemplating how to reach out to Jennifer. It seemed like it was pretty clear that Jennifer wouldn't want to speak with her again. Every time she dialed Jennifer's number on her cell phone; she would delete it again. "No I can't call her now; she could be taking an exam."
She would try later on to contact Jennifer, but the call would immediately hit voicemail. That night at Edward's birthday party was the last time she would see and speak to Jennifer again because the next year, she left Yale.
"She grew up thinking she was better than everyone else and the majority of everyone else were humans. It wasn't until she met a human, me, that changed her perspective. In that confusion of class and species, she increased her hatred towards me and my kind. Now that I found out that the Maeve is my old medical classmate who used to have a grudge against me; I can now focus on getting out of here alive," Lauren said.
Bo takes a seat by Dyson and Tamsin, looking at them with confusion. They were stared at her like she had horns on her head. "Why are you guys looking at me like that?
Tamsin looked at Dyson who looked at Trick, each were wondering how they could tell Bo to stop her search of the Hel shoe.
"What's going on?" Bo asked. They looked so secretive, she hoped that they weren't hiding something from her again.
"Look Bo, you can't use the Hel shoe," Tamsin said.
"Why not?"
"Because you won't be able to come back once you use them. The Hel shoes will transfer you to the other side, but they won't bring you back," Tamsin answers.
"Then we will use another way. Come on guys, it's for Kenzi."
"I know and I want her back as much as you do, but it's dangerous," Tamsin said,
"Danger hasn't stopped me before and it is not going to stop me now," Bo stated. "I promised Kenzi that I will bring her back, no matter what. I will do it, whether you like it or not. Dyson where is the other Hel shoe?"
"Bo, if you use the Hel shoes, you will release all the beings from Hel," Dyson said.
"There has to be a way to stop that from happening!" Bo shouted. She couldn't believe that the only way to get to Kenzi meant unleashing the monsters from Hel.
"Bo calm down." Dyson said. He turns to look at Trick, hoping that he has some words of wisdom to share.
"Bo if you do this, your father will rise from his prison and he will take his army from Hel to conquer the Fae," Trick reasoned.
"I have to get Kenzi back. Tell me there is another way?" Bo asked as she looks at Tamsin.
"I'm sorry, but she is gone," Tamsin said sadly.
"No, no, no. This can't be it!" Bo said. "If you guys aren't going to help me, then I will find someone who will." She gets up from her seat and heads out towards the door, but she is stopped by Dyson.
"This is too dangerous, you must stop."
"There is another way; I just have to find it." Bo shakes Dyson's hold on her and heads out of the Dal. She has to find the only other person she could trust and that was Lauren.
Bo's friends sadly watched as the succubus stormed off.
"Well that sucked," Tamsin said as she downed her shot of scotch.
"I have to call Angel, to warn her about Bo," Dyson said as he gets up from his seat.
"Tamsin, try to stop Bo from doing anything stupid," Trick said. "I'll try to find out if there is another way to Valhalla."
"Sounds good," Tamsin said. She hops off of her stool and heads straight towards the door.
In the Maeve's office, Geneva laid her head back against her chair and exhaled sharply. It felt like a weight has been lifted from her. She gone through every detail of what she said to Lauren and in some ways she felt relieved. The burden was gone; the anger it was still there, but slowly subsiding. Now that she thinks about the confessions, she realizes how stupid it was. Of course she would have been rejected. She was rude and arrogant. She should have thought more about what she said back then. She was too honest with her words and those words were unflattering. She should stop thinking about it now. Any personal relationship the doctor and her had in the past were gone. Jennifer Monroe was gone, a distant memory like all her other aliases. It was time for her to let go of the past and think of the present. Her eyes refocus on the box on her desk. A sudden sharp pain attacked her head and she grasped it immediately. She screams in agony as her eyes roll back in her head. Then in a suddenly her eyes begin to glow an unrealistic green. The pain in her head subsides and she removes her hand from it. She reaches over to the box and opens it, revealing a Hel shoe. From a drawer on her desk, she takes out an object wrapped in cloth. She removes the cloth, revealing another Hel shoe. She places the two shoes together and stares at it auspiciously, a sadistic grin appearing on her face.
"I will release you….father."
