Malina woke up, trying to cough up the ash from her lungs, and her voice was raspy. She looked around to see that she was in a smaller room, lying on a cot. She felt extremely weak.
"Here Malina!" A spoon of water touched her lips and she allowed herself to sip the cool liquid, healing her throat. She took deep breaths to allow the fresh air heal her lungs. She looked up to see Quasimodo standing above her.
"Quasi, you saved me," she said. "Thank you."
"Are you all right Malina?" he asked.
"Yes, I think so," her violet eyes widened in surprise. "Wait! Where's Esmeralda?"
"She's on the other bed."
The girl slowly sat up and saw her best friend lying on another cot unconscious. Malina gave a sigh of relief, knowing her best friend/older sister was safe. She watched Quasimodo leaving the room. The Romani girl slowly got up from her bed and followed after the hunchback.
"Quasi wait! I'm gonna help you out!"
The red-haired man stopped and turned back to face the young girl. He looked at her with concern.
"What? But Malina, you just woke up."
"I know, but I decided that you need some help, I'm willing to do it for you, and for Esmeralda, to pay you back for saving us again." She took Quasimodo's hands into her own. "I'll help you out, and you're going to need it!"
"Okay, let's go!" the Hunchback scooped up Malina in his arms and ran out with her, and they slid down the pillar. He set down the girl, and got prepared to battle.
They got over to a large pot of hot molten lead. Quasimodo pushed up a large heavy wooden beam and shoved it over the edge of the cathedral.
"Hey Quasi, need some help?" Malina heard another voice and whirled around to see a plump pig gargoyle popping up.
"GAHHHH!" she jumped back.
"Hey sweetheart, you okay there?" he asked.
"Oh Hugo, must you startle the young lady?" a slender gargoyle with a British accent asked. "She only just woke up, and she seems to be aware of our existence. Which we shouldn't have done!"
"Knock it off you two!" another gargoyle that happened to be female scolded them.
"Oh my, I never knew you guys come to life!" Malina said.
"It's all right sweetie, we're friends of Quasi and his guardians. I'm Laverne and these are Victor and Hugo. They're a bunch of blockheads let me warn you," the motherly gargoyle said whispering to the girl.
"Hey, I heard that!" Hugo said glaring.
"Let's not waste time, we have to help Quasimodo, and defend Notre Dame with all of our strengths!" Victor said.
"Right," Malina agreed.
"Guys, I need some help! Get some bricks and find something that will keep the guards out!" Quasi said.
Back on the ground, the soldiers ran away as the wooden beam landed on Frollo's carriage, completely destroying it. The horse pulling it reared and ran away. The man gasped in horror at the sight of it, and then got angry as he rushed down the stage stairs.
"Come back you cowards!" The judge ordered as he ran up the cathedral stairs with the soldiers running around. He grabbed a sword from the Brutish soldier's hand as he looked up. "You men!" he ordered his guards. "Pick up that beam! Break down the door!"
As the guards obeyed Frollo's orders, the Oafish Guard stayed back to guard Phoebus and Casamir, and the younger gypsy wrapped his arm around the guard's neck.
"Alone at last!" Phoebus said smiling. The Captain bonks the soldier on the head and Casamir grabs the keys as the Oafish guard fell down. As the soldiers used the beam to break down the door, Phoebus freed himself from the cage along with Casamir and stood up high holding a spear.
"Citizens of Paris!" he announced. "Frollo has persecuted our people, ransacked our city! Now he has declared war on Notre Dame herself!"
"This man has killed my parents, separated me from my little sister, and tried to kill me and almost my sister! We will not let this man kill more of us! He's the real monster in all of Paris!" Casamir yelled pulling out his dagger he hid in his boot.
The soldiers tried to break down the door again as Phoebus finished, "Will we allow it?!"
"NO!" the crowd screamed and they break through the barrier and began to fight the guards. They also broke the locks on the cage and freed the Gypsies, including Clopin and Djali. All of the people surrounded the whole square in front of Notre Dame like ants as they began fighting.
"I think the cavalry's here!" Hugo exclaimed as he, Quasimodo, Malina and the other gargoyles looked over the edge to see the citizens and gypsies fighting against the soldiers. They watched as the young man jumped off of the cage and went to fight the soldiers. The gargoyles tried to guess his name.
"Hey isn't that, uh? Doofus?" Hugo asked.
"Feeble?" Laverne asked.
"Phoebus!" Quasimodo and Malina cried excitedly.
Phoebus punched a soldier in the jaw, causing the soldier's teeth to fall out. Casamir pulled out his dagger and fought a solider, kicking him in the groin. He looked above to see his sister and the hunchback working together. He smiled in relief, knowing that she was in safe hands.
Quasimodo shoved a stone block over the edge and as the soldiers laid the ladder on the walls and tried to climb up. But the stone block broke one of the ladders causing another soldier get tangled in the roped hook and toppled down.
Victor held a brick and covered his eyes as if he were a coward. He dropped it and kept covering his eyes. Another soldier looked up to see the falling brick and it landed on his head, crushing his helmet and winced in pain.
"Sorry! Sorry!" Victor said.
Hugo threw a rock in his mouth and chomps it up. He flies around like an airplane and came to the ledge and started to spit the pebbles out like a machine gun. More of the soldiers toppled off the ladders and ran away.
At that moment, Frollot kept supervising the soldiers at the door, ordering them to break it down.
"Harder!"
In the battle, Phoebus kept battling the soldiers with the crowd and shoved three of them out of the way. Casamir fought against the soldiers, and cut one in the arm. A solider almost was about to decapitate the gypsy with a sword, but Phoebus managed to kick him in the groin to let the boy get away!
Back up at the cathedral, Victor was sawing up a piece of wood and Hugo was shooting candles from a candelabra, while spinning it around. The slender gargoyle then hammered a block into the contraption they were making, as Hugo filled the cannon with rocks.
"There's more coming!" Malina cried. Quasimodo ran to her side and looked over the edge to see the soldiers throwing a grappling hook through the balcony rails. The hunchback pulled the hook smashing against the edge and the soldiers fell down to the River Seine screaming. Malian saw a bunch of soldiers climbing up the ladder, and she pushed it, sending them down!
The soldiers kept using the wooden beam to break down the strong doors and they were close to getting inside.
The catapult the gargoyles built was complete, and Hugo and Victor pushed it with the slender gargoyle saying, "Ready, aim, fire!"
They pushed it down over the edge and it fell to the crowd, the guards screamed and ran for their lives. It landed and it didn't activate.
"Are you sure this is how it works?" Victor asked, as he looked at Hugo rubbing his finger on his head.
The guards attempted to move, but the catapult crushed them as if it were a mousetrap.
"Works for me!" Hugo exclaimed.
Down at the crowd, Phoebus was battling with the Brutish soldier with his sword and the soldier had his spear. The blond man shoved his former soldier back, and Brutish swung his spear. Phoebus ducked while Brutish showed his grin. Phoebus used the pirate's black scarf and tied it over his head into a knot.
Brutish tried to untie it, only for him to get a charge in the butt by Djali from behind. He flew over and ends up on the ground behind Phoebus' horse, Achilles.
"Achilles! Sit!" Phoebus commanded as his arm wrapped around the Oafish Guard's neck. The Brutish guard removed his black scarf and gasped to see the horse sitting on him. He struggled in fear to get the horse off of him, with his gagged voice crying, "Help me!"
Casamir laughed at the misfortune of the Brutish guard, he turned towards the Oafish guard, and punched him hard in the jaw. He ran towards Clopin, and they both knocked down tow soldiers that charged towards them. Clopin lifted Casamir up, and the gypsy boy used his legs to kick them both in the face!
"Looks, like you have broken faces!" Clopin said.
"That's what you get for hurting us for all of these years, suckers!" Casmair added.
Back up in the crowd, Malina continued to help with Quasimodo and the gargoyles as they looked for bricks, stones, and beams to scare off the soldiers.
"Fly, my pretties! Fly! Fly!" Laverne commanded the pigeons in a "Wizard of Oz" version cackling. The swarm of birds flew down to attack the guards and they ran for their lives as the birds started to peck them.
Meanwhile, Victor used Hugo as a bellows to warm up the fire on the lead pot and Hugo blew on the fire with all of his might. Quasimodo attached the pot to a rope, and the gargoyles along with Malina pulled it up. Quasimodo helped his friends tipping the pot over, sending the hot liquid to pour out of the gargoyle statues mouths and onto the guards below filling the town square. The guards battering the door dropped the beam and along with the crowd ran for their lives to avoid getting burnt from the hot liquid.
"We did it Quasi," Malina cried with joy. "They're backing away!"
Quasimodo ran towards the girl, picked her up by the waist and spun her around in the air. Malina laughed, never feeling very happier.
"We did it Malina, we've beaten them back!" Quasi shouted in excitement! "Let's go tell Esmeralda!"
"Right, she's gonna be so happy!"
Without wasting a breath, the two ran back to the bell towers towards the room Esmeralda was in. But little did they know that danger was about to strike again from a much eviler person.
