After a while I retired to my bedroom. I was glad that Amy had come with us so I didn't have to feel bad about leaving him alone on his birthday.
I collapsed on my bed and curled up into a balll. It was only about three, but I still wanted to go to sleep. And so I did.
I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of my phone buzzing. I had a new text.
Sonic 3 4:13 a.m.
Shadow, I'm sorry. Please call me.
I love you.
I licked my lips as I read. Without responding, I flopped back down and closed my eyes. I wanted to. Oh, God did I want to call him. I didn't, though. Honestly, I didn't know if it was worth it. If something as simple as Cyan and I being together four years ago is enough to make him break up with me, who knows what the hell else would. My phone buzzed again.
Sonic 3 4:16
Please?
I stared at it. It was one simple word, but there was a lot behind it. I hovered my thumb over the "call" selection on my phone's screen, debating. Before I got the chance, the cell phone lit up, informing me that he was calling me. I hit accept call and held it to my ear.
"I have to be honest, I didn't expect you to answer."
"Then why did you call?" I asked flatly.
"I thought I'd leave a message or something."
I sniffed sharply. "Alright. How can I help you?"
"Ah-I...Lok, Shadow, I'm so sorry for flipping out earlier. I love you, really, I do."
"Okay." Was all I could manage. I didn't know what else to say. The first time I'd ever told someone I loved them, and I got my heart ripped straight out of my chest.
"That doesn't change anything, does it?"
"Not really."
"I love you."
"Okay."
"You're not gonna say you love me too?"
"Considering what happened last time, no. I'm not."
"Can we just...be ok?"
I sighed. "No, we can't just 'be okay,' Sonic."
Sonic was silent for a while. "Shadow, you might as well forgive me, because I'm not gonna leave you alone." He said with a stale tone.
"...why does it bother you? That Cyan and I used to be together?" I asked. "That's what's been buggin' me."
"Well...how would you feel if you found out that I was living with my ex?" He replyed slowly.
He had a point. "I guess that makes sense, but...I don't think about Cyan as my ex. I think about him as my best friend. Does that make sense?"
"Yeah. Shadow, can I come over?"
"Right now?"
"Yeah."
"I guess so."
He hung up and I set my phone down, not moving from the spot. Almost as soon as I closed my eyes again, I heard my front door open. Cyan had neglected to lock it. Moments later, my bedroom door was open. "Hey, Shadow." Sonic said, slamming the door behind him.
"You're gonna wake up Cyan." I didn't look at him. I focused my gaze at the ceiling.
"Let him wake up." He said, climbing into the bed beside me. He curled up on my shoulder and rested his hand on my chest, tangling his ungloved hand in my white fur.
"Did you have a reason for coming over, or...?"
"I have a hard time sleeping whenever you're not with me. Especially tonight." Me murmured into my neck. Despite myself, my arms slipped around him.
"Sonic, please never do that to me ever again. I need you." My eyes closed and I traced his spine with my index fingers.
"Shadow..." Sonic mumbled into my cheek. "Kiss me?"
I turned my head to the side and found his lips in the dark, kissing him lightly. Sonic pulled away almost immediatly. "What's the matter?" I frowned slightly.
Sonic stared up at the ceiling. "Are we okay?" I closed my eyes, remaining silent. "I'm so sorry, Shadow."
"S'okay." I instinvtivly put my arms around him, holding him closer. He said nothing more, so I assumed he'd fallen asleep. I found it easy to drift off as well with him in my arms, feeling his warmth.
I was woken up to the sound of a knock on my bedroom door. "Shadow?" Cyan called out.
Sonic's beautiful emerald eyes fluttered open as well. He sat up, looking at the door. "Should I go?"
"No." I said curtly. I sat up as well and rested my hand on his back. "What's up, Cyan?"
The door swung open and Cyan's jaw dropped. "What's he doing here?" Cyan hissed.
"He was sleeping." My arm slid around his waist protectivly. Sonic happily snuggled against my chest, ignoring Cyan's presence. Cyan swallowed hard.
"You know what I mean, Shadow."
"I said he could come over." I said simply.
Cyan's hand twitched. "I thought he-"
"That's my business, not yours."
"Fine. I was going to ask if you wanted to go to the movies with Amy and me, but I guess not." He turned on his heels and went for the stairs. He was still wearing the dumb hidden blade thing i had made for him, which made me smile slightly. I was glad that he'd liked it.
I never replied. With Sonic in my arms, I lay back down on my bed and curled up to him. "I take it that Cyan's not to happy with me right now." Sonic said slowly, clutching the white fur on my chest.
"I think he never was very fond of you. Or rather, of me spending time with anyone but him. He's kind of weird like that."
Sonic frowned. "So, he's a bitter, jealous ex?"
I groweled. "I told you, I don't consider him my 'ex' and niether does he."
"Oh, I'm sure." Sonic scoffed.
"What does it matter? You're my..." I trailed off.
"Your boyfriend. Right?" Sonic said, glancing up at my face. His soft green eyes broke me.
"Exactly." I gave in. The corners of Sonic's mouth spread into a wide grin.
Sonic stretched his neck and kissed my nose. "Well, if you want to go out with Cyan and Amy, I'll just go home."
"What makes you think I'd wanna spend any time with Amy?" I sniffed sharply. I was nice to her last night, sure, but I really didn't want to spend any more time with her.
"Alright, maybe not, then." Sonic nuzzled my cheek.
"Why don't we go ourselves?" I asked. "Just you and me?"
Sonic smiled widely. "I'd like that. I'd really like that."
