Prompt #10: Lady - "I never knew your full name. It's - it's beautiful."

Words: 509

"Kaywinnet Lee Frye."

The whisper of her full name made her look up from Serenity's finicky engine. The silhouette in the engine room doorway was unmistakable. "What was that, Simon?"

Simon stepped into the engine room, a smile on his lips. "Your full name. Kaywinnet?"

Kaylee flushed in embarrassment. "Who told?"

"Inara mentioned something about it after the party on Persephone." His eyes were full of curiosity, but no hint of teasing. "I've never heard you mention it before."

"Cuz it's a mouthful to say and too damn long. My ma wanted me ta have a lady's name." She couldn't figure what her mama had been thinking. Kaywinnet sounded like a fancy name all right, but on a hunk of rock Rimworld like hers, it just wasn't practical in casual conversation. She'd heard people start calling her Kaylee when she began mopping grease off her daddy's shop floor, and the name just stuck.

She could see Simon mouthing her name, and it made her feel warm and tickled. Turning back to the engine, she said, "Don' be thinkin' you can start throwin' it round, Mister. Ain't nobody allowed ta just call me Kaywinnet."

"Who is?" he asked curiously.

"My ma, my pa, my Nan, an' my brothers."

"Y-You have brothers?"

"Yeah, five. All older and ornery as a pack of coyotes."

"R-R-Really?"

Kaylee frowned at his stuttering. He don't normally trip up this much. "Somethin' wrong, Simon?"

"It's nothing, really." He started tugging at his shirt collar, as if it had grown too tight around his neck. "You've just never mentioned having older brothers before."

She chuckled. "Aw, sure I have. They're the ones who taught me how to fix engines after I showed I had a knack. They're a bunch of sweethearts."

Simon nodded, but he still looked a little green. "Are we...will we be meeting them anytime soon?"

"Don' think we'll be hittin' atmo round my world for some time. Not after Miranda." Her mouth formed a small O as realization hit her. "Simon Tam, are you scared of meetin' my brothers?"

"No!" was his immediate reaction. Kaylee arched an eyebrow. "Maybe." The other eyebrow lifted. "Yes," Simon said sheepishly.

"Well don' worry. They'll love ya. An' if they don't - " She made a fist with one hand and punched her opposite palm. "I'll beat 'em up."

He gave a full smile at that. "I feel safer already." Sticking his hands in his pockets, the doctor turned and made to leave. Kaylee figured that was that and turned back to finish her own task.

"May I - " Simon's hesitant voice made her head tilt slightly to hear him. "May I have the privilege of calling you Kaywinnet?"

Kaylee's back was to him, so he never saw the enormously happy smile that threatened to tear her face in half. But she made sure he heard it when she answered, "I'd like that very much, Simon."
