Jaime and Steve sat beside one another as the quinjet flew through the endless blue skies. Jaime knew Steve couldn't comprehend the idea of Evelyn hiding such a secret like that. Jaime remembers the time when he found out what Evelyn had done, he hugged her as she sobbed over his shoulders. That was a few weeks after they became partners years ago. She kept apologizing and saying that she wished she had never done something like that. Jaime kept telling her that it was not her fault. Because it wasn't truly her fault.
Jaime couldn't imagine what Steve must be thinking about his best friend. Evelyn didn't want to do most of the things that had been done by her. Many of the people she counted in her kill list were not even her fault. Evelyn sometimes had doubts with their missions too, when she would read the files. She would question why someone was wanted to be dead. That was no killer. That was humanity at its fullest. Evelyn was the kindest person Jaime had ever met and he knew that she never deserved this painful thing to be her life. She deserved so much more than this.
"Hey," Jaime touched Steve's shoulder as he eyed the Scotsman. "You know, I think you took the news better than Tony did."
"She never told me." Steve replied to Jaime with a small sad look. "Suffering so much...how did she manage to cope with that at all? How she managed to even help me with my own problems when she was dealing with her own."
"Being an agent wrapped too much things in her head, medicine and Evelyn's nature." Jaime sighed. "Evelyn's the type of person that will be willing to cover up her own problems to help other people with their own. That's just how she is."
Steve could not help but feel sorrow for that. Evelyn must have been the kindest and strongest person he had met without question. Dealing with the problems in her head, dealing with him having to cope for losing seventy years of his life, dealing with the world's problems. Steve did not know how she was still able to not lose sense of who she was after all of the things that had come her way. But thinking about it, it was how he was too. He willingly came on board this mission to help with the things that had gone wrong regardless of the fact that he was still adjusting to the world around him. Devotion was an endless thing in his time but in this era, it was apparently rare. However he was sure that Evelyn Stanhope and Jaime Colt were part of that rarity.
Steve sighed as he took the small white book that was in his utility belt. Back in the war, he use to carry a small bible with him, so that he could read some parts of it whenever he was on the go with his Howling Commandos and or just busy. He couldn't attend masses often then. But it wasn't a bible. Jaime recognized the wording in the texts on the plain white background. He couldn't help but smile at the cleverness of Steven Grant Rogers.
They were in the emptiest slums of New York, an abandoned one which would mean that it would be less casualties. That Jaime was glad for. He knew what Psychotica was capable of. He saw the footages and wondered how Clint Barton wasn't dead yet. He managed to defeat Evelyn while she was nearing the final stage of Psychotica and they never spoke about how it all went down. Evelyn won't say and Clint neither. They allowed it to pass into the abyss of the past.
"You are brilliant for bringing that." Jaime exclaimed to the super soldier, looking at the very elaborate font face. "That is brilliant."
"Evelyn had this on her shelf; I read it often when she was away." Steve admitted. "I memorized it by now. Alexandra said poetry, so I thought.."
"That's why you are the most brilliant man I've met." He points to the name. "Elizabeta Antonovna."
"She's the author."
"She's Evelyn." Jaime reveals to Steve who blinks. "Who else has that name? Evelyn does. Evelina Antonovna Elizabeta. She wrote this to cope, back in '06."
"She wrote this?" Steve questions as he opened the small book again. "I wouldn't have thought.."
"She's full of talents, no?" Jaime smiled sadly. "The Recovery of The Young Woman, she called it. It was after Viktor Waze ruined her life. She lost her first coping journal, now I firmly believe Viktor has it. The poems she had written were about her anger and her sorrow. It was only ever meant for her but she published it after attending a support group."
Steve stopped at a page, one he had marked with a small paper clip he had found in his room when he had been reading it. He showed it to Jaime who looked at it. "This is what I thought would be perfect."
"This is going to be perfect."
"Uh, I would hold off that thought for a moment." Natasha shouted to the two of them as they came to the two in the cockpit. Jaime's eyes widened as Steve was in silence. The Psychotica smirked as she stood in the middle of the air of protective smoke, watching the fires go all about her. The dangers she had done, the chaos. At the same time, the blast of blue light into the sky was evident for all to see. Psychotica laughed hard with profound joy at the sight.
"Steve, you have to stay here now." Jaime exclaimed as he checked the guns he had been given by Penelope earlier. He had sufficient amount of bullets. He checked the rest of the pockets of his suit, checking if all was there. He was prepared. "I'll deal with this."
"I'm not leaving while she's like this-"
"I can deal with this." Jaime promises and pointed to the blue light firing through the skies. "Look, I get that you want to help Evelyn and I know you feel that she is your duty but that is your top priority. Stark can't handle that alone. They need you."
Steve bit his cheek as he eyed Jaime, trying to think of what he had said. He was right. He had a duty to the people in this city. He couldn't allow his personal feelings go against his job. But Evelyn..
"Alright." The decision was hard to be spoken for him as Jaime shot him a small nod. "But make sure you are both safe..."
"I can handle this." The former agent walked to Natasha, whispering in her ear as she turned to him and nodded. Clint looked at him and wished him good luck. Jaime thanked him as he walked out through the exit, patting Steve in the shoulder before he did. "I know about your feelings, by the way. Tell her later."
He didn't give Steve time to reply or even react, quickly leaving the quinjet and looked as the quinjet raised into the sky. Jaime placed his comm over his left ear, feeling the wind over his face as the quinjet disappeared.
She knew he was there.
"I should think you should first introduce yourself to me." Psychotica's voice was strong, not a single note of softness echoed in her manner of speaking. Her smirk could cut someone with a knife if it was even possible. "We haven't met."
"I really don't want to meet you." Jaime exclaimed in reply. "You sound awful, I was told. I also saw your actions. I wouldn't want to meet you at all."
"But you did."
"I had no choice. I wanted my friend back."
"One will always have a choice." Psychotica exclaimed to him, walking nearer to him as the chaos wrapped about the entirety of the background. "One always has options."
"Too bad that doesn't extend to Evelyn." Psychotica laughed at his declaration.
"She chose to create me." She snarled back at him, raising her hand up towards him causing him to be raised up in the air. Closing her fist, she decided to choke him. "She wanted a friend."
"Too bad she got a murderer as her friend." He said in reply, feeling the air disappear in him as he struggled. Her indigo eyes looked at him murderously, throwing him against the large steel car behind them. He groaned hard as the impact hit him hard, making him incapable of raising himself quickly. "You didn't have to hit me hard."
"I don't like your tone with me." Psychotica exclaimed back to him, walking towards him. "I don't like your disrespect."
"I have problems with authority." Jaime replies as he managed to grab his right hand gun, shooting Psychotica in the arm, causing her to hiss at him. He knew it was still Evelyn's body. He was not going to injure her much.
Standing up, he watched Psychotica use her mind to forcibly remove the bullet. Evelyn's not going to like it when she comes back. He eyed her, running to her as he placed back his gun over his holster. Psychotica did the same and soon the two were engaged in hand to hand combat. Psychotica hit him in the face as he blocked it with both arms up together, kicking her knees as she took it without any response to pain. Psychotica threw her hand about his stomach, causing the pain to resound to him as he moved backward. She disappeared from the front and reappeared behind him, crossing both her arms about his neck tightly to try and choke him. Jaime struggled as much as he could, twisting and thrashing about. Using his knees, he bent slightly enough to be able to use his hands to grab her long blonde hair and twisted it hard as he threw her to the ground. Jaime was about to get on top of her but she stood up quickly running up to him once more to grab a knife by his boots, managing to cut his knee as she slid through the parting of his feet and grabbed his leg forcing him down with a large thud. Psychotica landed herself on top of him, using the knife to stab him in his lower stomach part causing a loud painful grunt to release from him.
"I don't hesitate, dearest boy." Psychotica whispers to his ear with a large smirk, as she raised her upper body straight as she sat over his hips and started to punch him over and over again. Stopping for a moment as blood finally appeared, she licked it and laughed. "I like my games!"
Jaime gathered up all the strength he could in his knees as he raised both over the crown of blonde hair and closed it about her neck, forcing him some time to regain his manner of composure. He felt the blood trickle about his lips and tasted the undesirably feeling. Psychotica tried to choke him with his mind and started to succeed, her hands forcing itself about his chest into his pockets as he fought her off by rolling over. She was now below him as his knees pinned her down below as his hand removed the knife from his stomach. Feeling the blood scatter about her legs, she seemed rather in favor of the warm blood oozing over her. He held her arms to the cold pavement, though she moved closer to him and hit her head against him. Jaime hissed at this as she merely smirked and laughed. Jaime could feel his head was about to explode as he knew she was trying to free herself of him.
"I think Evelyn would like to see your fucking corpse without a head."
"Now is the fucking time, Penelope!" Jaime exclaimed loudly as he eyed the loudspeakers, choking once more as Psychotica used her mind to release herself from him. "Now, you fucking twat! I..I can't-"
I couldn't sleep anymore.
I was afraid to see their faces
Psychotica's eyes slightly widened as she hurriedly move towards Jaime and bit his neck hard, causing him to feel the blood ooze over it. She was free. Using her mind, she took one of Jaime's guns, composing herself once more. The voice was Evelyn's. This was one of the home recordings that Evelyn had made of during one of their first missions together. Jaime knew she recorded them to help her calm herself, he saw the tapes she had of it and secretly listened to them at times. He couldn't help but smirk at the panic in Psychotica's eyes.
It has been a while
Since I dreamt of it all again
"You have to give up now." Jaime forced his bloody self to spit the blood he had over his mouth, seeing it over the floor as he raised one of his guns. Psychotica raised her arms high as she pointed them over two large vehicles. The metal creaked as they raised up high into the air. Jaime cursed as he forced himself to move away from the crashing thud that could have killed him.
The voices in my head
Echoing so presently in my bed
Jaime could see the blood releasing through Evelyn's nose, knowing that the limits were coming. Psychotica would not care though. She was going to use her powers the way she wanted to. She started to raise more cars through the streets as he made a run for it. She screamed in anguish as she continued to throw whatever what was in her way to him. He panted as he hit behind one of the sides of the buildings, hissing then after he felt the pain of his wound. He took his hand over the wound, pressing hard to keep himself from bleeding out.
Shouting this I cannot understand
Things I don't even know
"You cannot hide from me, you fool." She exclaimed loudly at him as he noticed her hiss, feeling Evelyn fight her. "Hiding is for pigs, fearful cowardly pigs."
"I need back up," Jaime said over his comm. "I need some an ambulance or medic, quickly. Oh and Pen, fucking make the speaker louder now!"
"There you are!" She huffed aloud as he was thrown all across the glass windows of a large building, causing him to groan at the shards that raptured through his skin. He groaned hard, feeling the shards stick at his skin. He removed him despite the pain, seeing the blood flow over his suit. Penelope would not be happy.
Things I can't even see
But all the voices spoke of darkness in the land
"Evelyn!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, feeling his strength become lesser. "You listen to me! Evelyn!"
"I am not Evelyn!" Psychotica screamed as the glass in buildings shattered at her scream. "I am not Evelyn, I am destruction, death!"
The smell of death in the air
Reminding me of all the numbness
"You have to fight it!" Jaime continued to say as he avoided the scattering pieces of glass from where he held the wall to support him. "You fight her! You don't want to hurt anyone anymore, right? You want to help everyone right, to be better? You said those words, Evelyn. You want to be better? Fight her! Fight and win. Don't you dare give up!"
"Stop!" The echoes of Evelyn and Psychotica's voice become one as her screams got louder and louder, some buildings beginning to crack as the blood continued to flow over Evelyn's nose.
The pain, the feeling of powerlessness
I felt the warm oozing of sweet blood of innocence
"Evelyn, wake up! Please, we need you."
"No, stop!" The struggle was obvious to Jaime, the voices of the two sides seen so obviously as the indigo eyes started to flash in battle against the sapphire orbs that he preferred. "Stop!"
All was warm, all were lies
All of death and all the cries
All my grief and all my miseries
All of that despite the falling snow
Despite the cold and the pain
Jaime pushed forward, walking as the cries of sorrow came out of Evelyn and the laughter of insanity from Psychotica continued. The struggles continued as the light and darkness consumed the sight of Evelyn's body, mist of white and violet coming together as fight from within continue. Jaime could faintly hear the loudness of the poem continuing.
All of the things that have made me insane
Despite the falling snow
Despite the dark wings of crows
Despite the things that are unknown
All the people claiming the throne
"Think of Steve!" Jaime exclaimed as loudly as he could. "You won't admit it but despite every complication, you managed to fall in love with him. You managed to feel your heart race again. The way he would speak, the way his eyes shone like the light in the darkness. You feel it deep within your heart. Find that Evelyn, defeat the feelings of fear because you wouldn't have to fear anything. He's here for you, I am here for you. All of us are here for you. So don't fear anything! You aren't alone anymore!"
The peace I long for
The warmth of the sun
The warmth of love I wait for
Without any more fears
Beside you in the light of summer days
Lead me home
Despite the falling snow
Then and there an explosion came through the entire slum.
The darkness was welcomed by Jaime.
When Evelyn woke up, she saw the face of Penelope Eaton. Evelyn only saw her as she sat up, her eyes alert as Evelyn tried to sit up. Penelope stood up and helped her carefully holding her. Evelyn thanked her as she managed to get into the position. The last thing she remembered was the fact that her throat was dried from begging and pleading with Loki as the water rushed through the pipe and into the claustrophobic tank that she was in. But with the looks that she got from a passing doctor, she saw fear. Evelyn knew why that was. She knew that she had come out again, she had forced herself out and did the things that would be unbearable for Evelyn to even do.
"Don't get up too much." Penelope tells her as she walked towards Evelyn from her seat. "I had to doze you with some Engel, something your aunt Alexandra asked me to make."
"Where are we?"
"My parent's hospital clinic." Penelope admits to her as Evelyn didn't even acknowledge that answer at all but rather allowed her head to go down to eye the white sheets. Then turned to where Jaime Colt lay, broken and beaten filled. Tubs were in his mouth to help hims breathe as Evelyn's eyes continued to look and look. She couldn't process what she had done.
"I did something terrible, didn't I?" Evelyn asked as Penelope shook her head. The young Stanhope pierced her lips into a flat line. "Penelope, you don't have to lie to me...Jaime here, it is proof.."
"You didn't do anything-"
"I did." Evelyn concluded out loud as she forced herself out of the bed, seeing she was dressed in one of the clothes she had brought from Stuttgart. It was one of her long leather jumpers in grey, long enough to hide her entire legs. "I did, I hurt others again...I killed people again, innocent people-"
"Evelyn Stanhope Stark, it was not your fault." Penelope whispered to Evelyn to calm her down as the hot guilty tears fell from her eyes, holding her hands. "Please do not blame yourself, it was not your fault. You were abducted and taken and used. You have no fault in that. You didn't know what you were doing, you were not in command. She was."
"But I was inside her, I was her too!" Evelyn exclaimed, feeling as though she couldn't breathe. As if it was that village all over again. All of the past coming back in flashes again, the blood. The deaths.
"Yes, you can." Penelope insists to her as she rubbed Evelyn's back. "You are alright. You are fine. You can move on from this. But all this must come from you, Ev. You must move on and live your live into the next day. Don't allow them to get you down."
"The building is being attacked!" One of the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents shouted as he entered the room, Penelope looking at him as he and the other agents ran and shot their guns. Everything was going too fast and so it was a blur.
Evelyn removed the anesthesia from her wrists as quickly as she could and ran as the invaders from another dimension shot one of the agents down as the others ran for cover. Some were shot but she was sure some were okay as Evelyn forced Penelope to go behind her. Evelyn saw the invader run to her and raised her hand towards him making him float before he even fired a shot at her and as she raised her hand in a quick motion upwards he broke on impact and onto the ground.
Evelyn looked over one of the dead agents. It was Joseph Wairmark that Evelyn knew most. He was a kind man who brought people like Evelyn coffee with encouraging notes. The most painful part is that he had a kid too, about ten years old. She knew that she had to be the one to tell that kid that his dad was dead after all of this.
Evelyn grimanced at the sight of an honest man, a better person than she could ever be, dead before his time was up. Evelyn closed his lifeless eyes with her hand and whispered a short prayer for him. As painful as it was to do it, a moment after her prayer Evelyn took his loaded gun and his other bullets from his body. As she gave Penelope the gun, she checked on Jaime to make sure that he was fine too. She took a breath of relief as she confirmed he was fine.
"You have six bullets in there plus some more. Can you use it?" She asked her friend who blinked at her. "What?"
"Joseph's dead." Penelope said in realization as Evelyn pursed her lips. "H...he's dead."
"You're in a state of shock, crap." Evelyn whispered as she heard a loud hiss, coming through the building. There was more. Evelyn knelt over Joseph's corpse and took his comm, placing it over her ear. She tapped it and said, "This is Evelyn Stanhope, former agent of the BIR and S.H.I.E.L.D. Send back up. I've got Dr. Eaton here, emotionally compromised. Jaime Colt is still here, unconscious and healing. I'm here in a small hospital clinic, theEaton Hospital. Just near the fighting. I need someone to copy."
"I copy!" One of the escapees from earlier came rushing through the door. Evelyn looked at him as she nodded. "Mam."
"Agent, I need you to guard this room. Dr. Eaton is emotionally compromised and Colt is still healing from what I did to him. This is my task to you, alright."
"But mam, we need to do an evac-"
"To dangerous while fighting is happening in the streets." She shook her head. "I need all of you to make sure this room is safe, got it?"
"But this place is surrounded with the Chitauri-"
"Kid, this isn't my first rodeo. I'll deal with that myself." Evelyn announces as she looked over Penelope. "Just look after them. Do as I asked."
"A..are you sure, mam? I know that the other girl took your energy and all, and-"
Evelyn heard rustling metalic movements and when she turned around, she punched the Chitauri soldier hard with her power focused on her fist and he broke down into the ground. Evelyn took a deep breath and eyeing the agent.
"You were saying?"
The agent pressed his comm, "All agents in the building, evac orders no go. Agent Stanhope will protect the building."
"Damn right I will." Blood fell through her nose, feeling the warm of it as it oozed down with ease. Evelyn ignored it as she walked to the hallways and found the main door.
When she found the door, a few Chitauri were hurriedly entering with their weapons. Evelyn walked up to face them, causing them to look at her and shoot as Evelyn created a force field around her which deflected the attack. She needed to get them away from the hospital as soon as she could. Forcing herself to walk, she was protected from the attacks as they neared. Then when they got closer to the door, Evelyn took her both hands forward as the force field stayed around her while she pushedher hands into a shove which kicked them out through the doors and into the sunlight. They crashed against the parked cars.
"You okay, Evelyn?" She heard that through the comm as she stepped out into the streets barefooted, not caring about the heat or coldness of the streets. The voice was a welcomed one and belonged to Natasha Romanoff, followed by a hard crushing grunt that seemed to mean she's busy. Natasha panted softly. "I knew you could defeat her."
"It didn't surprise me when she did it years ago." The other voice was from Hawkeye as Evelyn heard him releasing an arrow into the air. "Good to have you back, kid."
"As happy as I am with the fact that my daughter is safe, I'm fighting a fleet here." That tone could only belong to her father as he flew up higher. Evelyn could see him from where she was.
"We could talk later." Evelyn exclaims as she saw a Chitauri running towards her, only to be forced backwards by her powers. "About the terrible things I've done in one day."
"You couldn't have known what the other one was doing." Natasha exclaims as she yelped harshly, kicking and jumping about from her line. "Loki's at fault here."
"You know, Romanoff could be such a great self love speaker." Her father exclaims as an explosion echoed through his comm. He blew up some Chitauri, she knew.
"I'm glad you're alright, Evelyn." Evelyn felt her heart skip a bit at the sound of that voice. Steve was still, which meant he was done clearing that area. "Are you okay there?"
"Yeah, I'm just gonna need to distract some people here while the civilians have an evac." Evelyn tells them as she saw a horde of them flying ahead, the blood dripping over her nose.
Evelyn carefully raised both her hands as she eyed them, trying to be patient while trying to get the perfect angle and when she did, she raised her hands high and hissed as she pulled them down to the ground with her invisible mist and crushed them down over the ground causing them to explode. Others ran to her as they were already in the ground. Evelyn started to fight them with hand to hand combat, adding her powers efficiently despite the fact that she knew she was going over the limit. But she continued anyway, just to get them away from the building."
"Hey, doesn't this remind you of Budapest?" Evelyn exclaimed as she hissed, climbing up on top of one Chitauri and knocking his head off with her two hands as her powers circulated there.
"That's what I said." Natasha says in an interrupted mannner as she was fighting.
"If Jaime was here, he'd say you remembered it differently Tasha." Evelyn replied as she dodged one of the shots fired by the fliers above. Evelyn raised her hand as a car when flying above the fliers, crushing them to the ground.
The sound of an bow extending and a possible smirk made Evelyn smile. "He is too correct."
"I'm throwing you a birthday gift, Evelyn!" Tony exclaimed as Evelyn heard a sound of creeking metal. Looking up, she saw this large creature floating about like a giant slug. But this one seemed to have protective armor.
"This is not the one I was expecting, too early within the year!" Evelyn shouted as her father passed by, followed by the giant beast.
Evelyn screamed as she stopped the beast from following her father and with both hands tore it apart with the invisible mist from her powerful mind. It tore with cracks coming through as Evelyn heard it wail louder than anything she's ever known and broke it apart as the its insides imploded over the roads. Evelyn created a force field on the entire area, shielding it from the disgusting insides of the dead beast.
"Okay, it might not have been a good idea to bring that present to you."
More blood fell from Evelyn's nose. "You think?"
More kept coming as they shot at Evelyn but she kept fighting them off with hands and feet and with all that she had in her. Evelyn kept ignoring her cautions of limitations as they all kept coming at her and being defeated by her. Hoards of them came flying past and she threw them across the screet into hard concrete and glass of buildings. A few she even tore apart into pieces like that giant slug. A few were gifted arrays of heavy trunks and cars parked all along the street. She did all kinds of things to them.
Evelyn felt drained and exhausted.
But she couldn't stop.
Not when there were people she had to protect.
"I can close it!" She heard Natasha exclaimed aloud. "Can anybody copy? I can shut the portal down!"
"I copy!" Evelyn declared as she crushed fliers upon their fellow fliers. "Close it!"
"Do it!" Steve confirmed over the comm.
"No,wait!" She heard her father exclaim in defiance.
"Stark, these things are still coming!"
"I've got a nuke coming and it's going to blow in less than a minute."
"The Security Council authorized that?" Her eyes went wide as she continued to fight against the invaders. "Fury would never allow that...unless."
"They overrided him." Clint finishes for her as she groaned, kicking one of the Chitauri and throwing the other way towards a brick building.
"And I know just where to put it." Evelyn looked towards the sky and found her father holding the nuke, causing her eyes to widen.
"No!" She screamed in protest as she ran and ran, trying to follow his path. "You are not doing that!"
"Stark, you know that a one way trip." Steve's voice exclaims, knowing that this is dangerous.
"Evelyn, do you remember when you pulled me towards that piano store?" Her father's voice asks her as she continued to run. "How you saw one as we were walking through Paris after we got bored at the conference lunch and decided to find something interesting and there it was."
"You are not doing that, you can't!" Evelyn exclaims as she continued to run, eventually finding Steve and Thor standing together, watching her father fly deeper and deeper towards the portal. Steve ran up to her. The tears ran down her eyes. "No, please!"
"You called me dad then, though. You kept crying about how you wanted to go see the pianos and see how they worked." He laughed sadly at the memory. "You found the pianos interesting, I remember you created your first piece there in that small store. The manager had a polaroid there and he said that we should sit beside each other and he'll take a picture. We bought that piano, it still sits in the middle of the living room. You remembered how you bargained for that picture to come along with the piano? Then you forced Jarvis to get you a picture frame for it? I loved that day, Ev. That picture, it sat by my office at home since then. I never took it away. It reminded me that I still had you, Ev. The best thing that I probably will ever have in this world. I love you, sweetheart. And I want you to know that I'm thankful to have you back in my life again. Even for a short while."
"We could have more times like that!" She cried as tears kept falling and some blended with her dried blood. "Please, dad! Don't do it, don't make me lose you too!"
"It's nice for you to call me that one last time." He says to her in reply. "Such a way to go, sweetheart."
"Evelyn.." Steve comes to her as she turned to him, "It's alright."
"No, no it isn't!"
"Save the rest for the turn, J."
"Sir, shall I try for Miss Potts?"
"Might as well."
He increased speed then and Evelyn knew his destination. Stark Tower was flat enough to be a runway had it been on the ground. Evelyn knew that this is what he needed to do. Evelyn felt Steve's arms wrap about her to comfort her as she sobbed for the fear that she might lose her father forever. That she'll never see him again. She didn't want to lose him. Not yet. Not now when they were starting to reunite as father and daughter. It wasn't time to say goodbye just yet. Evelyn didn't look as her father disappeared in the portal's inner abyss, she kept sobbing in Steve's arms. Her heart was breaking. First she becomes the monster that she is then she hurts the only brother she felt she had and then now she was about to lose her own father in finality. Steve kept looking up as he waited for Tony to come back.
When their hope was fading, there he was. Falling from the skies, endlessly with out fail. Steve couldn't help but grin.
"Son of a gun." Evelyn heard his thoughts then. Softly she raised her head and her heart soared at the sight of her father falling through the skies. But he was falling too fast.
"He's not slowing down!" Thor exclaimed as he spun his hammer to help her father but it was too slow.
The Hulk then showed up, raging through the skies as he captured her father despite breaking the building in doing so as he slid and broke it crashing finally over a car and into the broken ground. Feeling his part was done, the Hulk threw her father away from him.
Evelyn tore herself from Steve's touch and quickly lead the men to her father. She knelt to the ground and eyed her father's condition.
"Is he breathing?" Steve wondered as Thor removed the metalic mask over his face. Evelyn leaned close as she tried to listen to his breathing desperately as she touched the metal armor about his chest, waiting for a feeling or a movement of any kind. Evelyn felt her tears renewing as Steve placed a hand over her shoulder with her head lowering in grief.
But then the Hulk growled.
Her father screamed.
Evelyn felt her face rise at the sight of it, his eyes open and clear. They always resembled otter eyes, she recalls. But the way her heart beat was going at the fact that her father was alive.
"Thank you." She exclaimed to the Hulk who grinned at her. She turned to her father whose eyes softed at the sight of her. Steve removed his hand over her shoulder and leaned in to look at her father. "You're alive.."
"What the hell?" Her father breathed out with a dried mouth. "What just happened? Please tell me nobody kissed me."
"We stopped Hulk from doing that." Evelyn weakly joked as Steve grinned at her, almost about to laugh. "I had to do it."
"We won." Steve informs Tony as he took a breath of finality.
Her father took deep sigh of relief as Evelyn chuckled, looking at Steve and then eyed Thor who cracked a smile at her.
"Alright, yay!" He cheered weakly. "Hooray, good job guys. Let's not come in tomorrow. Let's just take a day."
"Have you ever tried shawarma?" He eyed everyone. "Have you, sweetheart?"
"In Turkey." She nods at him as Steve looks like he was about to snort loudly. "It was delicious."
"There's a shawarma joint, two blocks from here." Tony tells them. "I don't know what it is but I wanna try it."
"You'll love it." Evelyn replies to her father as Thor eyed her and when he thought of Loki, she knew. "It's not over yet?"
"It's not over yet." he confirms
"I believe I cannot join you in revenge against him." Evelyn says to them as she points to her clothes and dirty scrapped feet. "I have to get changed."
"You ran all the way here without shoes?" Tony groaned at his daughter. "Sweetheart-"
"Dad, I really couldn't ask for the nurse to get me shoes while aliens practically attacked the hospital clinic." She tells them. "Besides...Psychotica choked him, that counts as something."
"Do you want me to go with you?" Steve asks her as she shook her head. She kissed his cheek and smiled.
"Go be a hero." Evelyn exclaims as she walked away from them, as Thor looked at Steve who shrugged.
"You better have not kissed her back, Rogers." Tony exclaimed causing Thor to laugh.
"It wa only a peck on the cheek, Stark."
"That's still my daughter that he kissed."
"Just shut up and let's get to Loki." Steve walked way first as he knew he was going to blush all the way there. Thor bursted out in loud laughter again as Tony groaned.
It was a great victory.
Evelyn stayed by Jaime's side for the rest of the three days that passed after the battle of New York, not worried about her own pains as she continued to wait for her friend to wake up. Steve saw her use some of her medicine to force her own body to comply with her will. He doubted that she took a small doze knowing her fears of becoming the Psychotica again. Steve took the time to get away from the meetings between the Avengers and the officials of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the government to be at her side, bringing food and clothing for her as she continued to watch over their mutual friend. Steve wanted to be by her side, to talk to her about her emotions and make sure she had someone to support her at this terrible time but he couldn't always be there which she understands knowing he had duties as Captain America.
On the fourth day in the hospital, Jaime finally woke up. Evelyn cried and sobbed as Jaime laughed while she apologized to him for doing the things she did to him. But Jaime forgave her anyway, telling her it wasn't her fault that the other woman got out and did things. Evelyn was glad to finally see her friend was okay and Steve made sure that she got some rest, forcing her to bed when she had to. Steve had left a few hours ago, saying that he had to go and take Buck home from Emma, who Evelyn befriended a few months ago. Evelyn gave him the address to her home and she was sure Emma would try and make Steve blush about her. The thought of that made the young woman pleased, knowing she would like to see him blush more often.
Tony Stark made sure to come by as well, telling them of some things they missed. Thor had argued with Fury that Loki had to be taken back to Asgard to receive the judgement of the Allfather and keep the Tesseract out of their hands and into safety which Fury gave no argument about. Then he told them that they were free to go back into their regular lives once matter was to be settled. Of course, there are a few things that have to be done after Loki and Thor are gone from their lives.
"New York has to be rebuilt." Evelyn concluded as she tucked both of her hands into her jeans, causing her father to smile.
"You've always been a bright one, you know that?"
"You want me to stay and help rebuild it, then?"
"I need you to take your rightful place, one that you deserved since you were eighteen." Tony tells her causing her to raise an eyebrow. "I had it on paper with my lawyer, that when you reach eighteen you would get a portion of my shares and a position in Stark Industries so one day when you take my place you'll be in the loop of all the things going on there. But it seems your grandmamma got to me before I did."
"What do you mean?"
"You also got a portion of shares in the Stanhope Industries, meaning your board of directors there too." Her father explained as her mouth parted softly in her shock. "Oh don't look shocked, you know you were her favorite."
"I…I can't take that, that's too much." Evelyn breathed out as Tony chuckled.
"You'll be fine. If you managed two degrees before you were fifteen then you can handle making executive decisions for two companies." Her father assures her. "Besides, you can work from home. That's pretty easy and when there's a meeting, you can do video conferences. I know you don't want to move to California yet and I can't take you from your home, you're an adult now and you can make decisions for yourself."
"I'm sorry, I'm in shock." She admitted to him, their eyes meeting. "I just, I don't think I'm prepared to take my position at the moment…with what happened with Psychotica and all of that stuff."
"I know." He replied understandingly as his heart broke at the sight of his daughter in this paralyzed manner. He remembered the sleepless nights where he would have nightmares of the time he had being a captive of other people, how many people were hurt because of his actions. Evelyn didn't deserve to feel as broken as he did. She was still young, too much things were still awaiting her to feel this way.
He walked forwards to her with open arms and wrapped it about her body, radiating his warmth into her own person. Evelyn didn't question her father's action but rather she accepted it, hugging him back and closing her eyes to feel the contact she had waited so long to feel again. Evelyn was glad to have her father back. Pepper came by too and wished her well, bringing her some homemade food for her and Jaime to eat which she truly appreciated. Once more, Evelyn was coaxing her father to never let the blonde woman go because she was truly and magnificently good for her father and for her own person too. They left a few hours ago, going back to their rented apartment just up in Manhattan and asked her to come by to say farewell to the team before they part ways. Evelyn wasn't sure if she was going to go though. But Jaime was coaxing her to go.
"You should go." The blond man exclaimed as she frowned. "Seriously, you don't know when you'll see those people again. Might as well say goodbye to them until you have a reunion party and drink booze."
"I don't want to leave you alone here, it's my fault that you're at this damn bed recovering from terrible things I did to you." She shot back at him. "Not only that but I might start another fight with Loki there."
"Then start a fight." Jaime snorted despite the fact that it hurt him slightly to laugh too much. "You earned that much having a terrible week brought on by Loki the fucker. Just go and bloody get out of the hospital, Ev. You don't need to feel sorry for anything, it wasn't your fault. It hurts me more to know you look miserable here in this bloody damp. Well, you've always hated the smell of hospitals."
"But-"
Jaime tsked at her. "No buts, no pun intended. Seriously, Ev. Go and say goodbye to your new buddies and go home. Buck probably misses you. Not to mention your hot crush-"
"I hate you so much."
"Oh, you love me." Jaime retorted back to his raven haired friend with a grin upon his lips, causing her to roll her eyes. "Besides, I'll be fine. Penelope's sister is my nurse here. She'll take care of me."
"Have you got to ask her about Penelope?" Evelyn asks her friend as she thought of the emotionally compromised Penelope, stunned over the death of a close colleague she knew deeply well.
Jaime nodded. "She told me Penelope's alright. She's resting at home and will start seeing her therapist before heading back to work in a few months."
"Fury gave her a break?"
"Yeah, he wasn't going to push her to do some work after being emotionally compromised." Jaime eyed his friend softly. "So, what are you going to do now, after all of this?"
"I don't know." She revealed. "Dad wants me to stay in New York, to help with the cleanup of New York and then he uh…told me that I have shares from both Stanhope and Stark Industries, which means I have a job but I'm not prepared for it."
"Congratulations on that, Ev!" Her friend cheered happily. "Man, you'll be doing something much better than not dying. I'm proud of you, Ev."
"I'm not prepared for it, yet."
"Ah but they're still your shares and in your name. Unless your dad wants to have some sort of battle in a court house."
"Okay, touche." Evelyn grinned at him. "But what about you, what are you gonna do?"
"Well, your dad offered me a job in his security team."
"Oh, you'll be my security guard if I join my dad's company?" Jaime's eyes brightened in mischief.
"Now don't get too ahead of yourself, I haven't done the job interview yet…but then again if I do get through that job interview then we'll be hanging out more often."
"Well, here's to us downing vodka and going to Broadway!" Jaime chuckled at her, causing her to join him.
But then her phone rung.
It was a message from her uncle Matthew Fowler, the honorable lord Fowler.
Family meeting, now. See you in S HQ
"What is it?" Jaime asks her as her eyes tore from her phone.
"It's uncle Matthew." Evelyn answers honestly. "He messaged me."
"That can't be good."
She nodded in agreement. "No. Do you know what makes it worse?"
"No. What makes it worse?"
"Family meeting."
"Shit, forget I even asked."
Shit indeed.
Evelyn knew from experience that the family meetings were such a terrible alert that something was wrong. They only ever had meetings like these whenever there were things that were not good news to the family business and the agency itself. The Stanhope family always had been very family-centered and would never care about the consequences that it took. They went through great lengths to protect one another whatever the cost, knowing it was the value of their family to do so. Their words were 'Family above all else.' from the time the Rurikid dynasty ruled Russia to the Romanovs, they kept those words true and today it is as evident as ever.
The family meetings she recalled were arranged very well. The first one she went to was when she was thirteen, where they spoke about her condition and how it was hereditary and what they could to do make sure that it was fixed and if not fixed at least hidden. This is how they solved a massive question and have a united answer that pleased the entire family. Evelyn remembered how they all sat in a long rectangular table with endless velvet seats hidden against the strong wood and behind them were always black and gold velvet curtains with patterns of white roses within them being pecked at by ravens.
At the edge of the table was her grandmama as she was the matriarch of the family and was the oldest of all of them. There at the other end was empty as her grandfather had just died and as he was the eldest son, it was his chair to sit in after Alexander Stanhope passed away. Her uncle Nicholas sat there a year later though, he sat beside it on the right as successor to the legacy. Then there would be others sitting there. Her great aunts Elizabet and Alexandra, uncle Mikhail over to the left and cousin Konstantin beside him. Uncle Matthew Fowler and his sister Anastasia was always beside him. Ivan and Yuri Yashkin sat beside their mother as their sister Ioanna sat in front of them. Cousin Edward who was the son of her uncle Nicholas sat in his father's right while Evelyn sat beside him on the chair that once belonged to her own mother when she was involved in things like these in her lifetime.
Evelyn began thinking while she sat at the back of the cab, looking at the destruction that came and the normality that followed her fellow New Yorkers. Everything was going to change in the family meetings now. Elizabeth Stanhope's chair would not be empty anymore, rather it would have Elizabet Fowler sitting on it in her mother's place as the eldest daughter of Stanhope and that Ioanna would be sitting over her mother's chair. Nicholas might be the one leading now as he was the eldest male but she thinks her great aunt Elizabet would take precedence considering she and aunt Alexandra were the oldest people in the room.
Getting to Stanhope Industries was rather new to Evelyn as this was the first time in a while that she was going inside the building knowing that she was not going to see grandmama there with her large metal cane and her bright smile, her silver tongue and her sharp wit. Evelyn missed her dearly. Paying the cab hurriedly, she didn't ask for the change. She walked up to the building as quickly as she could. She didn't have to stop for security, which made it easier. They knew who she was and besides, the Stanhopes had their own tests to know if the person was their relative or no. She saw the busy corporate attired people walk through back and forth through the entire building, not being able to read their mind at the very moment because of the drugs she took to calm her nerves and make her body stronger.
"Cousin Evelyn, it's great to see you." She looked up as the elevator opened to find Edward Stanhope's dark green eyes staring at her own green orbs, causing a smile to release from her lips. He entered the elevator and pressed the level button for them as he looked at her while the doors shut. "How old were we when I fell down the slope while on a sled and more specifically where that trip was and what bone I had to get replaced with metal?"
This was what the test was.
"You were twenty and I was fourteen, the horse that pulled the sled was hot headed so he threw you off and you landed hard on the snow." Evelyn began to answer as Edward began to smirk. "It was us visiting grandpapa's home as a child in Yekaterinburg and it was December. You had to get your left arm bone turned into vibranium metal because you were afraid to break your arm again and since vibranium is hard to find, uncle Mikhail had to make a deal with a smuggler for it."
"Nice guessing, cousin." He chuckled as he wrapped his arms about her and quickly let go. Edward look so much like her, though his hair was brown due to his mother's auburn hair blending with the dark hair of his father. They had the Stanhope eyes just like the rest of the family. "How have you been? Besides the stuff that happened lately."
"Surprisingly well." Evelyn sighed to him in reply. "This meeting is about me, isn't it?"
"That and the fact you fought off aliens from another dimension with two gods who are like our own godly descendants. The fact that they are working for those two gods' dad as well. It's a big meeting today."
The elevator opened much to her relief.
When the two of them got into the meeting room, Evelyn saw all the same Stanhope gaze eye at her coldly. She expected that much and cordially returned the gaze as she and Edward took to their seats and sat beside one another. As she expected, aunt Elizabet sat on her grandmama's chair and Ioanna sat over her mother's chair. Though she was wrong that Elizabet will take the lead. Nicholas Stanhope did it himself.
"Good afternoon to all of you." He greeted them accompanied with a nod to each side of the table. "I am very thankful that you all got here on such short notice. Now, to begin, have all of you done the questioning to your fellow relative?" He got a multitude of murmurs positively speaking about the test. He nodded. "Good, now. We must move on the agenda. There is no need to address things that are already obvious in the room. Aunt Elizabet, please lead us with today's first agenda."
"The releasing of Psychotica." Elizabet exclaimed as everyone looked to Evelyn. She bowed her head as Elizabet eyed her sister Alexandra. "How much of the vile metallic water was poured in the syringe?"
"About half of the syringe blending with the Silence." She answered.
"No bad effects on Evelyn?"
"No, but with what I sent to S.H.I.E.L.D. as a counter strike we now labelled as 'Engel', it has helped her body to not only wash way the threat but also for strengthens her body and boosts her ability to use her powers more, though the limit is still there. It has to be used every time she does one of these fights."
"Then you need to produce more of this Engel immediately." Mikhail claps his hand on the table, looking at his cousin and aunts. "Nick Fury has suggested so, so did the Security Council. They will need her on things like these more often than we would have hoped."
"But we are to disobey grandmama's will." Anastasia Fowler retorts. "The reason that Evelyn got out of the espionage world was to focus on things that she actually wants to do, uncle."
"Perhaps Evelina likes to be a spy?" Ioanna questions. "She did her duty well as a spy and did her duty to save the world."
"Not when she is in danger of being found by one of the most wanted men in the world." Argued Nicholas to his family. "We are not having that conversation again."
"I agree." Edward says in support of his father. "Evelyn does not need to risk her life to this any longer. She is one of the members of the board, it is safer that way."
"Let's not get too ahead of ourselves." Matthew exclaimed to his family. "Perhaps we focus first on the fact that Evelyn is here with us. Can't we let her speak of what she wants?"
"Not when Viktor Waze is on the run trying to threaten us and our family." Nicholas exclaimed loudly again as Mikhail nodded his head singularly.
"Three agents died in one week by his own hands." Mikhail exclaimed. "Trying to send Evelina a message. A bait to get us to be vulnerable-"
"What do you mean he sent you a message?" Evelyn's face looked to her uncle as he sighed at her reaction, the family suddenly becoming silent. "Viktor sent you a message?"
"You, " Mikhail exclaimed with his emotions unreadable in his face or voice. "He sent a message to you."
"And nobody told me?" Evelyn stood up from her seat, anger evident in her features. "Tell me, Konstantin how many died from my hands as Psychotica? Someone tell me how many people I killed again, how many things I've destroyed again? I've just hurt Jaime Colt trying to bring me back, my own best friend, a man I treated like a brother and I hurt him! Then you tell me that because Viktor wants me back, he kills three more men in my name? Great, great!"
"The accident with Psychotica is dealt with, people who might have caught it with their eyes have had their memories altered and all is well." Elizabet informs her. "No one remembers-"
"I don't even remember either!" She laughed bitterly. "I don't even remembered how many people I've killed. You know the other girl. She doesn't care. She lives for the blood, for the spilled dead blood hot in my hands. You don't know what it's like for me to be this monster that I am, none of you do." She looks to her entire family. "Do you know how many people's lives are gone because of my hands? Almost eight thousand, eight thousand people dead because of me. More than the people that sank into the Atlantic with the Titanic!"
"Evelyn, you must calm down." Alexandra exclaims, walking towards her great niece as she wrapped her hands around her as the woman finally broke down for the first time in a while. "It's alright, it's alright…"
"I can't do it anymore." She sobbed at her aunt. "I can't…"
She was tired.
Eventually, everything was revealed to her as soon as she calmed down. Evelyn was told that no one remembered her being Psychotica except for a handful of people which consisted of the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., The BIR and her family. The memories of those in the area were changed with the idea that the Chitauri burnt the entire place to the ground before Evelyn could arrive and save it from utter destruction. The destruction was total and at least fourteen people were injured and one of them dead. One more person in the list of the numerous others that she had destroyed. One more person.
Then they told her of how Viktor was looking for her again and how he used three dead agents and their blood as his way of conveying a message. She knew the agents he killed personally too. Agent Warfield had the title 'Agent 030' and was about twenty seven years old from Belfast and he was about to propose to his girlfriend before he died. Agent Mayfaire was 'Agent 012' and she was thirty four and was a volunteer at the care home for the orphaned kids of Warwickshire. Then there was the youngest and he was agent Hammock who had the title 'Agent 018', her replacement. He had only been twenty years old and his parents only knew he was stationed abroad in the overseas colonies.
She saw the message that Viktor had left for her. Written in large fonts, four words resounded so brightly in the red that was the blood that pumped in the veins of the people she had known. four words along with a smiling face beside it. Evelyn would have hurled at the sight of the three bodies in front of the message, with a smiling Viktor covered in blood. But she's used to the sight of blood. Blood was her, her nature..
' :) '
Those four words caused her grief.
Three more people…
Four people died in one week because of her.
And more perished because of it.
Evelyn felt the guilt pummel through her hard as she sat on one of the benches of the church, looking at the icon of the holy mother carrying her precious son with tears in her eyes. Evelyn knew that there was no way she could ask for forgiveness after knowing such a fact that more and more people were coming into contact with danger because of her. Evelyn did not know how people could live with that much blood on their hands, so much lives destroyed. Evelyn couldn't live with that, she couldn't...
"Evelyn." She turns around at the sound of her name and saw a tall blond man with blue eyes gazing at her as he stood, flannel shirt and jeans covered with his brown leather jacket.
Steven Rogers had driven there from where Manhattan as quickly as he could knowing she needed him at that moment. He stopped by the hospital to see if she was there but Jaime told him that she had left. There was only one place he knew she would go for guidance. He does the same thing too when he feels lost. Going to church, it gives you some sort of assurance and he supposed that people like Evelyn wanted that, wanted security and safety. He needed to make sure she was alright because he couldn't bear to see her weep anymore.
"I uh...I came to see you.."
"I wasn't at home." Evelyn says as she moves her sitting position to the side to give him some space to sit upon. "Sit with me."
Steve did as she requested and did the sign of the cross despite the fact that this wasn't the church he regularly attended in but he knew that he and Evelyn prayed the same god. He trusted that he was listening to them though. He prayed that he was listening to the cries of one of his daughters on earth, weeping in the sorrows that she does not deserve. Steve prayed for relief.
"Evelyn, I should have been there for you." Steve began to say as he looked at her with guilt. "When you needed me, I couldn't be there for you and I want to say that I'm sorry."
"Steve, the people needed you."
"I know..but you are important to me too, Evelyn." He admitted to her as she kept silent at what he was saying. Because she already knew, she could read his mind.
"Please don't say it." Evelyn suddenly said as she looked at Steve with a begging look. She couldn't bear him to say it to her at that moment. "Not yet, not right now. Not when I'm a mess, not when I'm the monster that I am. Please.."
He felt his mouth dried then as he took to move towards her and placed a small kiss upon her head, causing her to slowly close her eyes as the feeling of his lips rested upon her head. Evelyn knew it was wrong and she knew he did think it too. But the heart wants what it wants. No matter how hard one tries. Mind over heart but heart always triumphs. "Then I won't. Until you're ready, Evelyn. I won't."
"That's going to take time."
"I can wait, Evelyn." Steve vows to her as their eyes locked upon each other. "I know how wrong this thing is but it feels so right...but I will wait, as long as you'll allow me to."
She didn't need to say anything at all as she allowed her head to rest about his shoulder, feeling the warmth and comfort that she knew he could only give.
But she couldn't say it back to him.
Not until her past was behind her.
