Chapter 11- Parabatai

As I continued to glance around the room, I began to feel slightly awkward standing alone with Jem. It was strange to be next to him now, knowing that the last time we were ever alone like this was the day I had thought he had passed.

Ever since Tessa and I have always been together when we saw him. Being here and thinking of everything made me think of the day I was out searching for Tessa.

I remember the pain more than anything. I remember my parabatai rune bleeding and the feeling of loss. I thought I had lost my friend, the only person other than Tessa who actually knew me.

I remember the feeling too Will. I was startled by the interruption. I had completely forgotten that Jem could hear my thoughts.

"I am so sorry." I said with sadness.

Sorry for what?

"For not being with you. The only thing that I have ever regretted is not being with you when you took on your brotherhood."

Will, you were where I wanted you to be. You were where you truly wanted to be. Do not regret my decision. Besides you couldn't be there when it happen anyway.

"I know but you are the one who had my back through every fight. You were my parabatai. I should of at least stay with you when you called for the brothers." I felt a slight chill down my spine.

Then you wouldn't of made it in time to save Tessa. She needed you more than I did. You put your life in my hands at the age of twelve, it was finally someone else's turn to take your life and cherish it. I knew that if anyone could make you happy it would be Tessa. I was just happy that if she couldn't be with me at least I knew she was with someone who would cherish her also. I smiled when he finished. I knew he loved her and it was time I let him know I knew.

"Jem I know you love her. I know you always have. So answer this question for me honestly: if you can be changed back, would you consider marrying Tessa?" I asked nervously, not sure if I truly wanted to know the answer.

If she would have me as her husband, yes I would. But I believe she is still in love with you, and I don't think she can go through losing anyone else.

"She will always love me Jem, but she has always loved you too. You and I have always shared the same amount of her heart. I knew that being with her that I only had a half. The other half has always belonged to you." I spoke calmly and tried to hide the sadness in my voice. I knew that if Jem could show emotion he would be tearing up. I turned to look at him to see if there was any emotion at all on his face, but his hood had been in the way. We stood in silence for a while until Jem entered my mind again.

Will do you remember the night we found that girl in the alley?

"Yes." I remembered, it was the first thing that made me search for the Dark Sister and lead me to find Tessa.

What about all the times we had to fight those automatons. I thought that we would never get rid of them.

"The things we did for love." I replied.

Love? No at first it started off being an ordinary shadowhunter mission. But of course it always leads up to a bigger endeavor.

"Yes. That is true." When I spoke Jem turned, gently I smiled and placed my hand on his shoulders.

"The good old days. When nothing mattered by killing demons. I couldn't of had a better parabatai." With that Jem turned and even though he didn't show any emotions he still took the effort to embrace me in a hug.

You can't tell Will, but I've missed you.

"Well you can tell that I have." I replied with a smile.

Thank you.

"For what?" I asked.

For being there for me for all those years.

"No. Thank you." Before I could explain why Magnus, Tessa, and Brother Enoch appeared from the hallway.

Well it seems we have discovered a possible cure Brother Zachariah. It was Brother Enoch who entered my mind.

"Really?" I asked, glancing over at Magnus and then to Tessa. She nodded and smiled.

"Wow! So this means Jem...I mean Brother Zachariah will be….well, will be Jem again?" I asked curiously.

It's possible. But we do not want to get his hopes up just yet. Brother Enoch entered my thoughts again.

"Will, Tessa. I believe it's time for us to go now." Magnus spoke calmly.

"But I would like to stay here with Je-... I mean Brother Zachariah." I pleaded.

You mustn't stay. Our rituals are private and we can not allow you to see what we will be doing. Brother Enoch explained.

"Fine." I replied. I glanced over at Jem who did not seem affected by any of this. I assumed it was the simple fact that he is a Silent Brother, or it could possible just be shock. Tessa grabbed my hand and pulled me toward her.

"I think it's time we go." She said as she pulled.

"Okay." I replied, and turned quickly toward Jem and smiled.

"Good Luck." I said quickly.

Thank you. Thank you for everything William Herondale. I shall never forget you and everything you've ever done for me. I quickly thought something, hoping he was still reading my thoughts.

Remember, please if this works, make Tessa happy for me. Do it for me Jem. Please. I turned and headed for the exit. After climbing back up the steps, Magnus, Tessa, and I were leaving the Silent City. We were now at the statue when I suddenly realized that I couldn't feel Tessa's hand in mine anymore.

"Will?" She asked frantically. I turned and she was looking at Magnus.

"Tessa. I'm here." I spoke calmly hoping to relax her.

"Magnus. Where's Will?" She asked. Magnus slowly turned and smiled.

"He's right there dear."

"Where? Magnus I can not see him." She was beginning to panic. I tried to touch her hand again but mine went straight through hers.

"Oh, Dear." Magnus said sharply.

"What?" Tessa replied still frantic.

"I was worried this would happen." He replied.

"Not again. Magnus I thought-" I began.

"I know Will. It seems to have worn off." Magnus looked from me to Tessa.

"Tessa. I need you to calm down. Will is still here." He spoke softly.

"Then where is he?" She asked, a little on edge.

"He standing right beside you. Look Tessa you should know that when he came to see you I had given him a potion. A potion to make him visible to you." He explained.

"Okay. I don't understand though. Why can you see him?" She asked, calmer now.

"Because I took some of the potion myself to see Will when he first came from wherever he was before. It seems that the potion does not wear off of Warlocks as fast as it does ghost." He explained.

"So, do you have some more potion with you?" She asked.

"Not at the moment."

"Well can you get me some?"

"Tessa. You only want the potion to see Will. What you do not realize is that there is more you see. You could not possibly handle what I have seen."

"How do you know?" She asked. I smiled at the fact that she continued to ask questions, just like my Tessa.

"Magnus tell her I am fine and that I do not wish her to have to deal with the consequences of the potion." I interrupted. Magnus told her and she of course began to argue.

"You just don't understand. I need to see him again. I need to feel him again. I want My William back."
