"Ryder asked me to marry him and I said yes."

I try to hide my disappointment and say "Wow. I'm so happy for both of you. I just wanted to ask where you were since you weren't at work."

"Ryder came by and we had a little date day today. Then out of nowhere, he proposed!" Ryder is still standing there speechless. "Wanna hang out?"

I had tears threatening to spill over so as fast as I can I said "No, I actually have a date tonight."

Ryder speaks up "With who?"

Kitty says "Sweetie, it's with whom?"

I say "Um, Jesse. He's this new client and he asked me out and I said yes."

Kitty says "Good luck." Then I walk to my car and break down. Ryder's engaged to Kitty. He's getting married.

I call the number on the card and say "Jesse?"

He says "Hello, Marley. What can I do for you?"

"Do you want to go out with me tonight?"

"Sure, Breadstix. Eight o'clock."

"Okay, see you then." Then he hangs up the phone.

I'm all ready for my date with Jesse. I lightly curled my hair and I'm wearing a black low cut top with a black skirt. I see that it's 7:45 so I get into my car and drive to Breadstix. I get there and see Jesse. He says "Hi Marley. You look gorgeous."

I respond "Thanks. You look great too. Wanna go inside?"

I say "Sure."

I see that it's packed in there. A lady comes up to us and says "It's about a 20 minute wait for you two."

I say "Alright. So aside from songwriting, what do you do?"

Just as I say that I hear a "Marley! What are the chances?"

I say with fake enthusiasm "Kitty! Hi, I didn't know you and Ryder would be here. How long do you guys have to wait?"

"We have to wait like 10 minutes. What about you guys?"

"Ugh, we have wait like 20."

"You guys could join us. We could get to know your boyfriend better."

I say "Oh he's not my…"

Jesse butts in "Sounds like a great idea. I would love to get know the people in your life, Marley."

The lady comes up to us and says "There is a table of four available. Would you like that?"

Kitty says "Yes. That'd be great."

The lady escorts us over to the table. I get into the booth first then Ryder comes in and Kitty says "Alright. Let the best buddies sit next to each other. So Jesse, did you know Ryder and I just got engaged today?"

He says "I did not. That's great."

She says "I know. So where did you say you two meet?"

"We met at the studio today. Marley was by far the prettiest girl I've ever seen so I just had to talk to her and I gave her my number and the rest is history."

Ryder says "Huh. You kind of have a type don't you Jesse? People say Rachel and Marley look alike. Are you going to make an omelet on Marley's head too?"

Jesse says "No. That was a long time ago."

Just as Jesse says that the waitress comes up "Hello, bitches. I'm Becky, your waitress."

I say "Becky, hi. It's me, Marley from high school and you remember Ryder?"

"Oh yeah, you guys were voted cutest couple."

Kitty says in frustration "You guys dated?"

Ryder says "No, no we didn't. People thought we were dating but we weren't."

Kitty asks "Can we have some champagne? We're celebrating an engagement tonight."

Becky says "Wow, Ryder you're marrying Marley? That's great."

I say "No, Becky. Kitty and Ryder are getting married."

"Ew. Why?" Kitty gets an offended look on her face.

I say "Can we just get our champagne?"

"Sure."

I could already tell this was going to be a long night. "So Kitty, I've never heard the story of how you and Ryder met."

Kitty says "Well, I was the head cheerleader at Lima University and Ryder was the quarterback so we met our first year. But didn't start going out until junior year."

"Oh, why's that?"

"Ryder had a girlfriend at the time."

I say "Oh did he now?"

Ryder interrupts "I didn't have a girlfriend. I wasn't over this girl."

Kitty adds "Same thing. All that matters is that we met."

Becky comes back with our champagne and asks "What'll have to eat?"

Jesse says "I'll order for all of us. I took a philosophy class where we learned what people wanted to eat from their body language. For Kitty, the garden salad."

Kitty says "Wow, how did you know?"

He says "Body language sweet heart. Ryder will have the spaghetti and so will I. A Caesar salad for Marley."

Ryder says "Wrong. Marley gets the carbonara every time."

I say "He's right. Sorry, Jesse."

Jesse says "It's alright. It's totally normal for best friends to know each other better than most people. And also to be jealous when they are dating new people."

Ryder says "I'm not jealous, just being protective."

"Protective of what?"

"Of someone making eggs benedict on my best friend's head."

"Will you stop with the egg jokes?"

"Oh, Jesse you crack me up if you think I'll stop yoking about the egg-cellent egg jokes."

Kitty says "Ryder, seriously stop."

"Ryder, you should listen to your fiancé."

"But if I did, I'd be a shell out. Don't egg-spect me to stop."

I say "Ryder, please stop. For me."

He chuckles "Okay fine. If you guys are so hard boiled about it. Okay, I promise that was my last one."

"Sorry Jesse, Ryder's just a little weird."

He says "Marley, it's fine. I had a really great time. It was all good egg-cept for the egg jokes."

I laugh "Well, we should do this again sometime." I see Kitty and Ryder kissing and I immediately frown. I see them look over here and I kiss Jesse. He's a good kisser but it doesn't feel the same as it does with Ryder.

He pulls away "Wow that was good."

I say "Yeah, thanks for walking me to my car. I'll see you later, Jesse." Then I get in my car and drive home.

Just as I'm about to go to bed I hear my cell phone ring. I look at the caller ID and it's Ryder. "What do you want Ryder?"

"I wanted to apologize."

"Well if you want to apologize to anyone it should be Jesse."

"No, for tonight and the night before. I have been a huge jerk to you ever since you got back and every time I open my mouth something I don't mean comes out."

"Do you really think you could just apologize for getting engaged to Kitty and saying nothing, just being in the background and then cracking all those jokes on Jesse?" I heard some laughing coming from the other end. "Ryder, why are you laughing?"

"You said crack all those jokes on him. That's an egg joke."

I start to laugh at my mistake. "Don't make me laugh, Ryder. I'm really mad, Jesse probably thinks I'm crazy and doesn't want to talk to me ever again."

"Do you honestly think that Jesse is boyfriend material? You just met him today and he's kind of creepy. I know that it's not my place to say this but, you could do better than him."

I sigh and say "What about you? You could do way better than Kitty and yet you're with her. She talks down to you all the time and she's kind of rude. I just don't get why you're with her."

"I love her. She's the first girl who's ever loved me as much as I loved them. I'm happy and my life is simple when I'm with her. She helps me forget everything that happened that night you left and all the pain I was feeling. It was wrong of me to say those things about Jesse and if he's the one who makes you happy then I'll be supportive."

"But you said last night that you still loved me? Did that just go away last night?" I really didn't want him to answer because if he didn't and I knew then it'd be over, I wouldn't be the most important person in his life.

"Of course, I still love you. I always will. But I love Kitty too. I gotta go; Kitty wants me to go to bed."

"Okay, bye." He hung up and I said I love you. Little did I know that he heard it and whispered back I love you too.
