Black Ice

Chapter 11- Jack

.

Ow… My chest is burning with a strange cold buzz. My whole body feels like a glacier is laying on top of me. I try to move my eyes behind my lids but nothing seems to stir. Man what happened.

I gasp and my eyes fly open. "Ah! Ah!" I try to fill my lungs with the cold air around me. My eyes dart around me trying to take in the bright room around me. I turn my head to my left and feel a sharp pain sting down my spine.

"Jack!" Tooth's bright voice rings through my ears as her face comes into view. "Jack is awake! Oh thank goodness!" Tooth softly lifts my back up and wraps her arms around me lightly. The embrace feels warm and welcoming but the embrace is not the one I am yearning for. I see the rest of the Guardians move into view. They are all smiling but I can see behind each of their eyes they are hiding something.

I slowly push myself to a sitting position. "Okay, so who wants to tell me what is going on?" I rub the back of my neck and turn it to the sides trying to find some relief in the stiff joint.

They all try hard to keep their eyes from meeting mine. I turn my gaze to the one that I know cannot resist my lost and confused gaze.

The Tooth fairy flutters her wings uncomfortably under my eyes. She pulls her bottom lips between her sparkling teeth and then blurts out, "Elsa tried to do what you asked and during the process you passed out and honestly looked very lifeless and she panicked thinking the worst and she ran off. Once we made sure you were okay we all tried to get Elsa to come back but she wouldn't stop, she just kept running with this deer in the headlights look in her eyes. The snow started to pick up and we all lost sight of her. Even North couldn't find her." Tooth's hands fly to her mouth.

Bunny groans, "You cave to easy Tooth." He adds as he shakes his head.

"But he did need to know." North pipes up and I notice Sandy floating next to him nodding along with him.

My hand slides from the back of my neck to the back of my head pushing my hair up with my hand. "I should have figured something like this would happen. I have to find her. I have to get her back to Arendelle. More importantly I have to talk to her. I just have to!" I stand and feel a dizzying power surge through my body. "Whoa…" I look to my hands and I feel a smile growing on my face. "It worked. It really worked!"

I look around to the other Guardians, the questioning looks in all of their eyes. I exclaim excitedly. "It worked! I can feel it! Look!" I blow into my hand and a large snow ball forms. A laugh rips from my throat and I grab my staff from the wall where it was leaning and spin it, a gust of flurries fly freely from it. I stomp my foot to the ground and a sheet of ice covers the wooden floor. "She did it! She really did it! I was starting to think it didn't work but, WOW! I feel more powerful than ever!" I feel my face starting to hurt with the smile that has been plastered on it. I notice the happy faces of my fellow Guardian's.

"That's great!" North bellows and laughs.

"Now I know I'll be able to find her! I have to go look for her now!" I start to turn toward the door when I feel my fellow guardians shift behind me. I pause, and slowly turn and look over my shoulder, "What else is there?"

"Well Jack, ya see, we believe that Elsa might be with," North pauses and rethinks his words, "Because she was scared of what she might have done, we believe that her fear lead her to Pitch."

My vision tunnels, "What." My voice comes out a dull tone without any question in the tone.

Tooth pipes up again, "You see, when I finally found where I thought she went to all I found on the ground was a pile of tainted black snow."

"What." I say again like a broken record. "Then why are we still standing here?! There is NO time to waste then!" With that last sentence of my lips I burst through the workshop doors, knocking into a Yeti that was painting a new coat of red on to the door. I yell back an apology as I take flight, heading toward the last known lair Pitch was last seen in.

.

I stand outside the entrance of the black lair, calming my breathing. Stay calm Jack. Elsa needs you like you needed her. I feel my chest start to rise and fall at a normal pace and I summon a huge gust of cold wind to burst through the entrance and take a few steps into it.

I cautiously walk through the dark hall, turning my head to the opposite side with each step, my grip on my staff tight. I am about to an opening when I hear a booming laugh echo through the empty space.

"Ah Jack, I didn't think you would remember this place," A cryptic voice calls to me from somewhere above me.

"PITCH!" I yell, angling my face upward, "Let Elsa go! She has nothing to do with any of this! This is between you, me and the other Guardians." I scan the darkness for any sign of movement. My eyes stop only when I realize there is a light dusting of black snow falling inside the space around me. I watch a one of the black snow crystals fall to my hand, it disappears in a burst of smoke once it touches my skin, leaving a dull burning in my palm. "Elsa…" I let the Queen's name slip from my lips. My eyes dart around franticly now, yearning to see her, to make sure she is okay.

"Oh Jack, Jack Frost, you poor lost little boy, you have never known what you wanted have you? At first it was just wanting to be seen, and then once that happened, what was it? Oh that's right you wanted loved. You wanted to be loved by any other human, but Jack, we are not humans." Pitch's voice rings in my ears.

"Quiet Pitch." I spit his name out, my eyes still racing around the room.

"But you see, we aren't humans, in this world at least."

His words cut into me. He is right. I haven't been a human in this world for years. My human life ended when I traded places with my sister on the ice that day so long ago. Why would I want something so human? Something I know I can never truly have.

My eyes widen. Because I was human again, at least I felt that way. In Arendelle. I was normal. I got eat, sleep and drink like I used to. I was more than just a Guardian, I had a real life.

"Now, doesn't that sound so much better than the Hell you have been living in for so long? And Jack, it can all be yours. The girl, the love, the human life. All you have to do right now is give your powers to me." The lord of nightmares offers me.

A chance to fully be a normal human again. To be able to live in Arendelle with Elsa. To be happy. My thoughts start to tempt me but they are cut short when my eyes finally find Elsa's pale skin.

"ELSA!" I fly up to her quickly dropping my staff at my feet. I notice her dress, now black. And her beautiful blue eyes the same pitch black staring coldly forward. She looks so lost and confused, like she doesn't have a clue why her powers are working without her. Why the snow she is making is black as coal. I finally reach her and I open my arms to hug her but to my surprise I fly right through her and land on my knees behind her.

I gasp and jump up to my feet, "NO!" I clutch at my chest and spin around to look at her, the beautiful Queen of another world that I have fallen in love with. She can't see me.

"Just like black ice, you didn't see it until you were already hurt." Pitch says dream like. "You see Jack," Pitch appears at Elsa's side, "She doesn't know who Jack Frost is here in this world. To her you are no more than a snow storm that starts in the middle of the winter." Pitch says as he slides his hand across Elsa's shoulders.

"Stop. Touching her." I close my eyes and feel myself starting to shake. "She does know who I am. Even if she can't see me right now. It's not because she doesn't believe in me. It is because of you!" I blast at Pitch with a huge blast of my power, careful to be sure not to get Elsa, even though the cold wouldn't have harmed her. "YOU! Are the reason that my powers stopped!" I blast at him again, small shards of ice sliding past his gray skin. "YOU! Are the reason I had to go and bring Elsa here! To put her in danger!" I fly at him and grab the collar of his shirt and swing him into the nearest wall, "And all because you want me to stop being a Guardian? Because you think my power can be of use to you?" I stare into his dark eyes, "Pitch, won't you ever learn, you can never be a Guardian. You are like black ice. You harm people when they aren't expecting it. You can never be a Guardian because we care about the kids, you don't. We want to keep them safe and make sure that they are happy and have fun in life. YOU, have never done that, you scare them while they sleep! So stop trying to become something you will never be!" I pull my other hand back, ice quickly covering it and with all the force I have I drive my fist into his face.

Pitch's body goes slack in my grasp.

"JACK!" I hear Tooth's voice gasp, "You didn't…" I turn my face to hers, she looks scared.

"No, I just roughed him up." I look to North and Bunny who look pleasantly happy. "Took you guys long enough." I smirk.

I turn around and look at Elsa. Her dress has turned back to ice blue, she has one hand on the wall beside her, supporting herself, and another on her head. Her eyes still closed as she slowly moves her head side to side, as if trying to clear it.

"Elsa," I say softly as I walk up to her, silently praying that she can see me now.

"Jack?" She questions as she lifts her head and opens her eyes.

A beautiful blue shines back at me, "You can see me?" I ask, holding in a terrified breath.

"Yes Jack, I can see you." She cracks into a smile and tears form in her eyes. I feel my own face mirroring hers as I move closer and pull her in to my arms.

"Elsa," I whisper in her ear quietly as we embrace each other, "I love you. I know it seems sudden but I just have to say it. You make me feel more alive than I have in years. The only time that comes close to how I feel around you is how I felt being seen by Jamie for the first time. You don't have to say it back I just had to tell you because I never want to lose you. You make me feel normal, human again." I finish my confession, feeling slightly silly for sounding so girly. I pull away from the girl in my arms and slide my right hand to her cheek and gaze into her eyes has I close the distance between us I slowly close my eyes and place my lips on hers.
