AN: Sorry that this chapter is a little short, but the episode was a huge flashback before Vanessa goes to London and finds Ava and Malcolm, so Ava's not there when all this goes down lol. Since the story is from Ava's perspective, I didn't include any of it so if there's any of you who don't watch the episodes, please go watch the it because it was amazing! Also you'll be confused with future chapters you if you don't. So here's a few notes for after you watch the episode.
The cut witch teaches Vanessa all she knows and Vanessa teaches Ava how to use the tarots cards, but doesn't tell her anything about the witch or what she leaned cause she wants to protect her.
Along with trying to understand her powers, Vanessa seeks out the cut witch because she needs a way to protect her sister. If you remember, Ava accidently murdered their mother with her powers.
Sorry for the long note but I want you guys to know all of my ideas and I couldn't put it into a chapter because the story is from Ava's perspective! Enjoy this thing I wrote :D
I knew I was dreaming. The wind was too soft, the waves were too loud. And it was impossible for me to be back here. I was standing on the beach that held all of my happiest memories. I could hear girls laughter and I saw the images like ghosts running through the sand. A boy and two girls, one dark haired, one blond. They were swinging a much younger girl in between them. They're images dissipated into the fog, but the laughter lingered. I didn't care I was dreaming. It was the best dream I'd had in weeks. I would stay here forever if I could, even though it wasn't real.
"No you wouldn't." The voice was loud it startled me.. The old woman who stood behind me was in no way like the ghost images I'd just seen. She was solid and frowning deeply at me. Her eyes were an odd shade of yellow and they were boring into me like she was trying to read my mind. Maybe it was the dream, but I couldn't read hers. My mind felt foggy, but I somehow knew this woman didn't belong. She was wrong. She was an intruder in my dream.
"An intruder, am I? Look around, little girl. You're not home. It's only an illusion." The waves were still crashing against the sand and through the fog I could see the outline of the two houses I'd grown up in. No, it wasn't real. But I couldn't pretend it was.
"Who are you?" I asked the old woman. I didn't feel threatened by her, but maybe I should have. I'd seen spirits before, but it had been when I was awake.
"You don't need to know my name. Only my message." She stepped forward and the back of my neck prickled. "You're very brave. Brave like your sister."
"You know my sister?"
"Intimately. You don't look like her though. You're prettier, I think." She took another step closer to me. "But being pretty will get you nowhere in this world, I can tell you that. You're in danger." I smiled. I wasn't afraid of her, not here in a place where I'd felt so safe. I wasn't sure if she was even real yet.
"Is it the sole mission of every spirit to tell people they're in terrible danger? You think I hadn't figured that out already?" She grabbed my wrist and I could feel her fingers digging into my skin.
"A spirit am I? You think you're in control, girl? You're never in control. You've never been in control." She twisted my arm and I pulled away.
"Ow!"
"If I can hurt you in your dreams, what else can? Hmm? You think I'm the only one who can take over your mind while you sleep? You have to learn to protect yourself, telepath."
"Telepath?" I still wasn't afraid of her the way I thought she wanted me to be. Only curious. The longer she was here, the more I could figure out how she thought. Not be reading her mind, just by observing.
"It's what you are. You touch people and read their minds. You read them without touching them too. Have you ever considered that someone can do the same to you? I taught your sister how to do it. But she didn't' teach you like I told her to. She thought she could do it for you, protect your mind from afar. But she can't anymore. You shut her out. You're too strong. You're stronger than she is. You have the devil in you, child."
"What?" The word devil made my heart pound. She had her desired effect, I was scared now.
"Every child born of lies and foolish passion does. Your parents didn't love each other. They were married to others, had other children. You were a mistake, an accident. You weren't created out of love, you were created out of lust. It makes your blood strong."
"How do you know that?"
"Because I can read your mind like a book, child! You're too open, you're too trusting. You're gifts have made you too confidant. You are not indestructible. I can tell you horrible things about yourself if I wanted."
"So tell me how to protect myself." I was sure that this woman was real now, I'd felt her fingers on my skin. "If you taught my sister, you can teach me."
'There isn't time. This is only a dream, a dream you have to wake up from. But you're a fast learner." Her eyes flashed like yellow fire. "You did something horrible. You did many horrible things. It was your fault. Your fault that thing was able to enter your lives- there it is. I can't read anything more."
"I didn't do anything."
"Learn how to harness that power, child. You're powerful. Your gifts are not toys, you use them only when necessary. Not to help poor orphan boys you want to make into angels. Can I give you some advice, girl?"
"I think you will anyway." I wasn't sure if I liked this woman. I definitely didn't like her in my head. The idea that others could do the same made me feel vulnerable. All I had was my secrets.
"The boy you love is insignificant. There are more important things than Victor Frankenstein. You don't love him. You want to save him. You want to save everyone. You think that redeems you somehow, makes you good. But nothing will ever make you good. You're a liar and a murder and you always will be."
"I'm not a murder."
"You killed your mother." I felt a deep pain in my chest. I didn't think about my mother. I hadn't thought about her since the day her body hit the floor. There wasn't a reason to. I saw her in Vanessa's eyes sometimes, but I'd look away.
"I didn't mean to."
"But you did it. You can't take murder back, it brands you forever. Leave the boy. You can't save him, he won't change for you. Your sister needs you. You shut them all out because you're scared. Because you made a nasty promise you shouldn't have. Now live with that choice. You cannot win this fight this battle apart. You must be united, you and your sister. Do you understand?"
"I don't even know who you are."
"But she does." Her images started to fade, like the ghosts of my childhood had, disappearing into the fog. "You'll see me again, telepath. When you learn to control your gifts, you'll see me again. Now wake up. Wake up and fight."
