This prompt was given to me by younge0508. It was a picture of a quote saying 'never trust a duck' :D

This one was super fun to write and I hope you find it fun to read.

Every now and then, when Isabelle and I got out together, we would get something to eat from Taki's and walk around. Usually we went to the park nearest to the Institute and enjoyed he nature. Occasionally we ran into some faeries, but for the most part they just ignored us.

When we did walk through the park, we had a bad habit of feeding the ducks in the big pond. Now, I saw bad habit because it made the ducks pretty social with people—especially the two of us. Whenever we walked by, they would come up to us for bread crumbs.

Now, some friendly ducks aren't really a problem. That is, unless you're dating Jace Lightwood.

Really, though, it's not a problem unless Izzy or I are there with someone. The ducks only like us because we always feed them, everyone else they just kind of stare at, as though wondering if they would feed them like the regulars.

The only complication was that Jace liked to be outdoors. Our dates tended to revolve around being in the outdoors. I avoided going to the park with him for as long as I could, but today I just couldn't put it off any longer.

His arm was firmly around my waist as we walked to the park. I had lapsed into a nervous silence while he talked absently about the hunt he and Alec went on last night. He continuously twirled strands of my hair around his fingers as he spoke. I was sure that he was aware that neither of us were paying attention to what he was saying, but he spoke anyway, just to fill the silence.

He trailed off after a while and leaned down to kiss my cheek. I looked to him with a smile. He returned the gesture. "You didn't hear a word I said, did you?"

I gave him a sheepish look. "I'm sorry," I said. "I just got really distracted and—"

He cut me off, pressing his lips to mine briefly. "It's fine. I don't think I even heard a word I said."

I chuckled, rolling my eyes at him.

"I know why you were distracted and I understand completely." I raised my brows at him. This ought to be good.

"I'm so attractive that I distract myself sometimes. So I understand your lack in of an attention span."

I scoffed, shaking my head in amusement.

"Uh-huh. So, when you said that you didn't even hear a word you said, that was because you caught your reflection in a shop window?" He beamed, showing off his chipped incisor. My heart skipped a beat at the familiar sight.

"Of course not. My distraction was you, my beautiful, kind, loving, gorgeous, and highly dangerous girlfriend." I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, even as I laughed in response.

"Highly dangerous?" He nodded, looking proud.

"Yes. You are very dangerous. I did train you, after all." I scoffed lightly, leaning further into his side and putting my arm around his waist over his.

I stood up on my tip-toes to press my lips to his cheek, barely making it with a little jump. He laughed loudly, gathering some attention from passing mundanes and Downworlders alike. I caught a group of teenage girls—mundanes—staring at Jace like he was a gift from God.

Then I almost laughed myself. Jace may not be a gift from God, but he sure was a gift from an angel.

We passed the whispering girls and continued on our way to the park silently. We turned off to it and I felt the grass tickle the sides of my feet that were unprotected by my flip-flops. I tried to steer Jace away from the path that led to the pond, but he seemed to have a destination in mind for us.

I sighed in resignation, accepting that we were going to go past the pond and the ducks were going to come running out for bread crumbs and Jace was going to slaughter every one of them. I saw the reflective surface of the pond in the distance as we approached it.

"Where are we going?" I asked warily, hoping his plan didn't involve soaking my clothes in pond water.

Of course, knowing Jace, we could be going skinny dipping in broad daylight in the duck pond, which was probably filled with leaches. Hopefully the 'duck' part would scare him away from that idea.

"I thought we could just walk around for a while," he said, smiling at me. I nodded and returned the expression.

When we were only about fifty yards from the pond, I saw the downy critters floating around in the middle of the small body of water.

His muscles stiffened as the ducks floated leisurely to the water's edge. I tried to hide myself behind his side. Maybe they wouldn't recognize me.

Did ducks remember people? I didn't even know it was possible, but every single time we went by they would wait for crumbs. If that wasn't recognition than what was?

I saw a couple ducks—just two—step onto land and sighed. Jace edge away from the pond slightly and I couldn't hide a smile.

"They're just ducks," I said, as I had many times. He shook his head vigorously, keeping his eyes on the 'horrendous creatures'.

"They are not just ducks. They are—"

"Horrendous creatures, I know," I said with a broad smile. He looked at me with eyes narrowed in mock-seriousness.

"Are you mocking me, Clary?" I nodded and he scoffed playfully.

We continued on in silence for a minutes before he suddenly started walking almost sideways, pushing me with him.

"Jace, what are you—" I paused as I looked over and saw the two ducks from earlier coming closer, heading right for us. I sighed, but almost laughed when I saw the look of horror on Jace's face.

"Clary," he said without looking away from it. "Why is it coming closer?" I could hold in a small laugh, so I converted it to a cough. He looked back at me with narrowed eyes and I knew I hadn't covered it up very well.

"This is not funny."

I couldn't help a laugh this time. It most definitely was funny. Jace was backing away now, watching them with wide eyes while I stepped towards it.

"Clary! Get away from that thing!" I smirked at him over my shoulder.

"Nah, I think I'm going to stay right here." I stretched out a hand to the closest duck and it waddled a little closer, looking for crumbs. The second one was a little more wary, but still came forward, just a few steps behind the other.

"Clary!" I turned back to Jace with a small grin.

"C'mon, Jace! They're adorable! Look at them!" he shook his head vehemently, looking at me as though I'd just said that a behemoth demon was cute, not two little ducks.

"They are not adorable in any way! They are disgusting, horrible, sneaky, cannibalistic creatures! I've said for years we ought to put them down like demons." I laughed, startling the ducks who took a couple steps back.

"Cannibalistic?"

"They're worse than demons because they fool you into a sense of security, like they have with you. Now get the hell away from them!"

I laughed again, still looking at him while I waited for the ducks to come closer.

"Jace, they are not demons. They are harmless."

"No. They are not harmless. Look at the color of that one's head! Tell me that's normal!"

I looked at the duck he pointed to and grinned. It had a green head, like male ducks do.

"You know, they probably look at your head and say the same thing. 'Look at that one's head! That's the weirdest color I've ever seen!'," I mocked, seeing him shudder ever so slightly.

"I don't care what the stupid things think of me. Now get away from them!"

I looked back at the ducks, who were closer to me now. "But Jace, look. One's a boy and one's a girl. They're on a date just like we are."

His brows shot up as he looked at me. "How the hell do you know what gender they are?" I laughed again. His expression was priceless.

"You can tell by their coloring. Look, this one has a green head, so it's a boy and the other one doesn't, so it's a girl."

He shook his head. "That's freaky. Ducks are freaky. Now get away from them."

"Jace, ducks are absolutely harmle—ow!" I jumped to my feet and away from the ducks. "The stupid thing bit me!" I held my hand and backed away, watching them with narrowed eyes. It hadn't really hurt, it was just a little pinch, but it had startled me.

When I was close enough, Jace grabbed my arm gingerly and pulled it away from me, looking at my hand. "Where did it bite you?" I raised my pointer finger up and he looked it over carefully, a look of concentration on his face.

"You've got a red mark, but you're not bleeding." I took my hand back and looked at my finger, feeling foolish for even saying 'ow'.

I scowled at the ducks as they came closer and stomped, effectively scaring them back to the pond. I huffed and Jace put his arm around me.

"I told you they were evil." I sighed. I was beginning to believe him now.

"Stupid things," I hissed, looked back at them as we walked back towards the street. He chuckled.

I could swear that the damn duck was grinning at me.

When we got back to the Institute we headed for the kitchen. Izzy was already there and looked up at us when we entered. Her brows furrowed as she looked at us.

"Are you guys okay? Jace, you look like you just saw a ghost," she said worriedly.

I scowled, dropping down into a chair and staring at my finger.

"I hate ducks," Jace and I said, at the exact same time. I smiled up at him as Isabelle looked at me tiredly.

"By the Angel, not you too."

Hope you liked it :D
