It was now nearly two weeks after the Saiyans had attacked and everyone was healing.
"Why'd you do it?" Yamcha turned to look at the origin of the voice questioning him. It was his hospital roommate, Raditz. Brother of Goku and somehow one of the saviors of Earth.
"Why'd I do what?" Yamcha tried to sit up, but he was in too much pain. No one else was in the room so he couldn't get any help sitting up. So he just lay there looking up.
"Why did you save me when I first came to Earth? It's been bugging me for the past year. No one just saves their enemy." Raditz coughed, the tube helping him breathe kept irritating his throat. "Ugh, I hate this thing."
"Loneliness I guess. I had hit rock bottom in my life. Bulma dumped me. My baseball career was declining. But when you came along, that was my chance. My chance to escape from it all. One last chance to fight again and die a hero of sorts." Yamcha sighed, hating his own motives. He was at a horrible point in his life then. Which right now, he just wanted to forget about it. He heard Raditz chuckle across the room.
"Spoken like a true hero." The sarcasm in Raditz's voice was clear.
"Hey, I don't need you judging me. Remember, I pulled your ass out of the fire multiple times during the fight with Vegeta." Yamcha laughed and Raditz just grunted in annoyance. The door slid open and in walked Bulma, pushing Goku in a wheelchair. His left leg was in a cast and his right hand was wrapped in bandages.
"Hey there boys. I brought the other musketeer with me." Bulma chuckled as she sat down next to Yamcha and Goku wheeled himself over to near a wall. He got out of the wheelchair and started doing some pushups and began talking.
"Hey guys! Bulma was telling me about some space thing. It's kinda complicated, Bulma can you explain it?" Goku was ignoring the pain in his leg, trying to work himself back into shape.
"Uh, sure Goku. So, my Dad can't build a ship at the moment. It would take him forever. I'm gonna work on the calculations with him and then get back to you guys. I was just wheeling Goku here. Keep up appearances. The doctor hates that he tries to wheel himself down the hallway. Last time he took down a nurse." She laughed and so did Yamcha.
"Well, I'll see you guys later. Don't hurt yourself Goku." The blue haired girl got up and walked out. She closed the sliding door behind her and the three fighters began talking. Goku got back into the wheelchair for the conversation.
"Raditz, can Nappa's pod get us to Namek? I'm pretty sure Vegeta left it behind." Yamcha seemed to be full of ideas lately. He was more willing to try and figure out this problem more than anything before. He wanted to get his friends back from the dead as soon as possible.
"It can hold one of us, maybe two with some modifications. But three of us? No chance. We'll have to figure something else out." Raditz scratched at the IV in his arm. He hated all these medicinal instruments attached to him. But the doctors yelled at him every time he removed them. He was tired of hearing them scream so he dealt with it.
Goku was about to speak up when the window slid open and in jumped Gohan. "M-maybe me and Dad can head to Namek in the pod. Since we're both almost fully healed and all." Gohan's arm was no longer in a sling, but a small wrist brace. Raditz turned his head to look at his nephew as the child sat down on his father's lap.
Goku looked down at his son, "Gohan. I don't think your mom would approve. You know how angry she can get."
"But Dad! I want to help! Mr. Piccolo, Mr. Krillin and Mr. Tien all died trying to save the Earth! They all helped me, so I want to help them." The child jumped off of Goku's lap and began stomping out.
"Kakarot. Just take him with you. We'll deal with your mate when the time comes. Won't we bandit?" Raditz glared at Yamcha.
"Um, you can. Chi-Chi scares the crap out of me. Even more than Bulma sometimes." Goku laughed at his friend's words.
"Alright. Thanks Raditz. I'm gonna head back to my room. I'll see you guys later." Gohan wheeled his father out of the room and down the hall. The moment they left, the room was completely silent save for the whirring of machines. Yamcha began giggling.
"Ya know, Chi-Chi is like the strongest chick in the world. Even Goku's scared of her." He reached up and scratched his scar, thinking about how Chi-Chi could probably kick his ass if she tried.
"Nothing I cannot handle. Kakarot is soft. He should've let you kill Vegeta." Raditz seemed extremely serious about making this point.
"You were the one who convinced me Raditz. Goku isn't soft for trying to get me not to. He just wanted another challenge. He's always been like that." Yamcha forced himself to sit up. He looked over at Raditz, "So why insult Goku?"
"If I had not been there Vegeta would've most likely been killed. If he had it would've been for a stupid reason. My reason was just. His pride would shatter if we let him live. Not give him a warrior's death." Raditz sighed and looked up at the ceiling as he lay there. "You know, the blue haired girl, Bulma I believe her name is, cried after you fell in battle."
Yamcha chuckled at this, "Maybe she did. Doesn't mean she is gonna get back with me. I cheated on her. She was pissed and broke it off. But me dying doesn't repair the damage."
"Well she does seem to show a lot of care towards you than anyone else. You must admit, even if she resents you, it is quite interesting to see." Raditz grinned at the ridiculousness of this conversation. Never in his life had he had conversations like this one.
"Hey man, I ain't complaining." The two fighters both laughed a little at what he had said. It was the first time Raditz had really laughed at a sort of joke. He was usually a serious person. This surprised Yamcha, but he didn't care. It showed the Saiyan warrior was slowly changing.
"So Raditz, you got some girl waiting for you out among the stars?" Yamcha looked back at his comrade. Who was silent for a while before answering.
"No. I have no time for a mate." Raditz forced himself to roll onto his side and stare at the wall. "The only female I got along with was my mother. I was young when our planet was destroyed. So I had not taken up interest in females yet."
Yamcha chuckled, "So puberty hit ya in the middle of space huh? That must've stunk big time!" The scarred fighter tilted his head back as he erupted into laughter at the thought of mid-puberty Raditz. "Please tell me you had voice-cracks."
"I had no such thing. And you would do well not to pry further into my personal life. Maybe the nurses can give you a sedative. I'm sick of hearing you talk." Raditz finished his statement with a grunt and closes his eyes to rest.
"Hey dude. You were talking too. Don't just blame me. But whatevs." Yamcha lay back down, his hands behind his head. He drifted off into sleep with thoughts of the battle still fresh in his mind.
Late that night Raditz snuck out. Before he left he turned all his machines off and made sure Yamcha was asleep. As well as Bulma who had fallen asleep in the chair next to Yamcha's bed. Opening the window carefully he flew off into the night. He was heading for where they had fought Nappa. He was looking for something, and determined to find it.
Upon landing Raditz looked around. Nappa's body was nowhere to be found. "Damn it. Where is it!?" He began looking through some rubble trying to find his former comrade's body. "I need to find it!" Upon pulling a rock from a large pile the pile began to topple. It all fell on Raditz and he clenched his teeth. Pain shot through him, but he pushed the rocks off. He saw a hand bent in an odd direction.
Running over, he realized it was Nappa's hand. Pulling the rubble off of the body he was staring straight into the face of Nappa. His face stuck in one of pain since rigor mortis set in due to the time that's passed since the battle with the Saiyans.
"Serves you right." Raditz found what he was looking for. He pulled the scouter from Nappa's face and put it on his own. He turned it on for the earpiece to be flooded with yelling. There was yelling about how Vegeta had returned in critical condition and was healing. Raditz promptly punched over a pillar of rock upon hearing this. But something else took precedence above all else. Frieza, the one who destroyed the Saiyan home world, was heading for Namek. The home of Piccolo.
"He must know about the Dragon Balls. Damn it." Raditz began flying back to the hospital after turning off the scouter.
What Raditz didn't know is that there was more trouble heading their way. On the edge of the solar system was a ship with six passengers. One of them strong enough to wipe out Earth on his own. Possibly as strong as Vegeta. Their distance put them at about three weeks out. Their destination was for sure Earth. Why they are heading there is unknown, but the fighters of Earth are far from prepared.
That's right guys! The next few chapters will revolve around Tree of Might! So get ready for that showdown. And there have been questions of how/if the Earthlings will keep up. Well it will be addressed in one of the next few chapters.
Q&A
Q: So i read through this and it has been rather interesting. It is written well and raditz's change does seem gradual, his insecurities and trying to get over them was well written I will say that. I will say one thing however I would say Nappa was a little off though. power wise. i k it says his power was 4 k to 4.5 k but nappa when he concentrated he matched an 8 k power goku. so really nappa at full strength was in the 8 k mark. hell goku made the comment he thought the fight might last forever unless he used kaioken to double his power to 16-18 k. i am a tad disappointed by yamchas training though it seems he only reached to be as strong as he was in cannon except he had kaioken this time. Why would king kai even let him go? If i recall in gokus case goku needed to get stronger than king kai otherwise it would all be for little point. infact if i recall yamcha made the trip to king kais planet extremely quickly in cannon. how come he is so weak in this? as another note regarding nappa a tad disappointed you wasted nappa a little by killing him off. he was vegeta's surrogate father afterall. A saiyan general possibly could have had a part as either protecting vegeta or planning stratagems for everyone to get the dragonballs later on. otherwise good story i will be following.
A: 1. Wow that's a lot to read. 2. I didn't have Nappa go full power in this. 3. Goku was going to go back either way. Didn't matter if he was stronger than King Kai. They were still gonna wish him back. 3. They killed Nappa in the anime as well... 4. Glad you're enjoying it so far.
Q: I really like what your doing with it so far! Hope you can update it soon again! oh... and one of my friends wanted to know who you were going to pair Raditz with? I honestly want to know as well...
A: This will be addressed at some point during the Namek Saga most likely.
Q: Loved it! :D
A: Noice
Q: great ending to the saga
A: Glad you think so!
