I'm back with Chapter 11. I hope you all enjoy!
"No… There's no freakin' way!" Johnny shouted, taking a step back. The motorbike soared overhead, blocking out what little there was from the cloud covered sun for a brief instant. They came down, and slid to a halt, spinning around until they were facing Johnny.
"Hey boys…" The voice that came from the black riding helmet was female, "Hope I'm not tardy to the party."
She brought out a black device that quickly unfolded and revealed to be a composite bow. The masked female pulled back the bowstring with two arrows between her fingers. She took a split second to angle them and turn her bow sideways and she let them fly. They soared past Johnny and he heard two pained grunts, followed by two thuds. He never took his eyes off of her.
"Cat got your tongue, Johnny boy?" She asked. She took two more arrows from the quiver on her back and pulled them back. She let them go, tear through the air as they sped toward Johnny.
"Aagh!" Red flames burst up from around Johnny's feet, creating a protective shell and the two arrows were reduced to ashes that were carried away by a passing breeze. The flames dispersed as quickly as they came, and once Johnny was visible again, they could see he was no longer sneering like before, when the rider 'flew' on to the scene. He was smirking now.
"That's a weight off my shoulders. And here I thought I would be dealing with the little bird brain all grown up," Johnny said, popping his knuckles, "But it's just another arrow-slinging archer. This'll be a piece of cake."
The female rider pressed a button on her weapon, and the bow folded to its manageable size from before. She attached to her motorbike and hopped off. Johnny could get a better look at her now. She was dressed in mostly black: Black skin tight pants, black jacket, black stiletto boots and he thought he could make out a utility belt around her waist, also black. The only hint of real color was the silver top she wore. Johnny licked his lips. It accentuated her chest nicely…
Her face was hidden by a black and silver riding helmet. He spied a design on the side of her back. It looked something like a silver, tribal hawk.
"Huh? I guess I am dealing with a bird brain after all…" He commented.
The woman took a step forward, and she crossed her arms as she reached down at her waist. Her hands took hold of what she was searching for and she unsheathed twin short swords that with a flick of her wrist, extended in to full-length, straight, single-edged blades.
"Call me Hawk," She stated.
"Wonderful…" Johnny sarcastically remarked. Hawk jumped in to action, she closed the gap between them and she slashed fast with one sword and then the other. Johnny dodged them with ease, and reached for his laser pistols at his sides. A gunshot tore through the air, and one was knocked from his belt.
"Hmph…" Chief Briar huffed, gun in hand with smoke rising from the muzzle.
Johnny's other pistol was enveloped in flames the moment his hand wrapped around it, and it became a curved, and jagged blade with a blade grip. He brought it out and their weapons clashed. Sparks rained down.
Hawk leaned back the moment Johnny fired and the laser blast tore through a police cruiser's door instead. Johnny fired again and again, but she kept redirecting his weapon every time, "Knew you were gonna try that," Hawk commented. She crossed her blades under Johnny's and pushed his weapon so it was pointing toward the sky.
She lased out with a straight kick and struck him square in his stomach.
Johnny didn't even grunt. He slid back, but that was it. The empowered biker reached out behind him and his other laser pistol flew in to his hand as it transformed, identical down to the last detail of the first. Johnny trained both of his pistols on Hawk.
"See this coming?" He asked.
"Yep," Hawk commented. She pointed at his feet.
"Boss, look out!"
Johnny looked down at his feet, and there were two grey orbs with red blinking lights sitting there. His eyes widened, and he quickly covered his eyes.
They exploded in to large clouds of smoke.
"Son of a -" Johnny hissed. His eyes were burning. There was something wrong with this smoke. His eyes were covered by red flames for a brief second, and he was able to open them ever so slightly. It was just enough to see Hawk come through the smoke, her blades crossed and going for his neck.
She pulled them outward…
"Agh!" Johnny was surrounded by a shell of red flames yet again, and a wave of force shot out. Hawk was caught in mid-air and sent flying back. The smoke was dispersed in a split second.
Hawk skillfully performed a backflip, and landed in a crouch, sliding back.
"See that coming, ya sword swingin' bitch?!" Johnny yelled, "Hah! Didn't dodge it that time! No clever trick!"
Hawk didn't say a word. Johnny found out quickly why she didn't.
With no time to dodge, a fist connected with his face. Out of the corner of his eye he could see the fist on his cheek, violet sparks arcing around and flying in every direction. It was Ariana.
With a battle cry she pushed forward and Johnny was sent flying through the air in to one of Bay Bridge's many cables keeping it stable. His impact left a sizeable dent at that…
"Agh!" Johnny lurched forward. He started to pull himself free when a flurry of magic bullets collided with him, engulfing him in small explosions and a cloud of black smoke.
"I got him!" Ariana cheered, her hands out in front of her with sparks of magical energy arcing around her fingers.
"No quite!" Hawk announced. Ariana was suddenly swept off of her feet. She found herself being held bridal style by the masked rider. A moment later and they were nearly sent flying as wind rushed past them. Smoke climbed higher and higher in to the sky from the shallow crater that was now in the center of the bridge.
It was Johnny. His grey skin covered in small patches of red flames. He spit on the road, and grinned.
"Quick reflexes," He commented, "Would've crushed her skull if you hadn't gotten in the way there…" He said it so casually. He craned his neck, and several pops followed.
Ariana huffed, and she thrashed in Hawks arms. Her body was surrounded by a violet aura and she flew out of Hawk's arms at an incredible speed, and she rocketed toward Johnny. She threw a punch, empowered with her magical energy, straight at his face.
He caught it.
Red flames clashed with violet sparks, and all the power she put behind it was gone.
"Dammit!" Chief Briar growled, "Hex, get away from him!" He yelled, taking aim with his pistol. Hawk jumped in to action. She gripped the hilts of her swords tightly and spun as she neared Johnny.
He merely raised his arm and red flames rose, becoming his shield. Hawk abruptly stopped and jumped away. A small portion on both blades was glowing orange, emitting steam.
'He was going to melt my blades down…' She thought.
Johnny took a step forward, pushing Ariana's fist back. Ariana tried to wrench free, she tried to pull away and put some distance between them but Johnny's grip wasn't loosening. She charged her other fist and swung, but Johnny caught that as well.
Shots were fired, but a red wall of energy was erected and the bullets bounced off.
Hawk shot three arrows, but that did nothing. Red flames spread across Johnny's back and they were reduced to ash like before.
"Heh…!" Johnny lunged at Ariana, driving his knee up in to her stomach. The girl gasped. She slowly doubled over, hacking and coughing. Johnny noticed her arms go slack and he let her go. Ariana's arms fell limp.
Johnny took his knee away and she stumbled. She coughed violently, now holding her stomach. Her legs were shaking…
"Too bad… I thought that this would be more fun…" He raised his arms over his head.
Chief Briar clenched his teeth. His bullets, all of their ammunition was useless!
"Hawk! Do something!" He called to the masked rider. He was a normal human. As much as he wanted to help his daughter… What could he do?
"Can't," Hawk commented blandly, walking toward her vehicle. She paused for a brief moment, and then continued toward her motorbike "She'll be okay though."
"Rragh!" Johnny brought his fists down on Ariana's shoulders. There was a split second where nothing occurred. The only sound came from the rumbling engines of Johnny's motorcycle crew.
Cracks began to spread out from underneath Ariana's feet. Johnny gave a slight push down and a small shockwave was sent out. The crater they stood in deepened more so. Small chunks of concrete flew in every direction.
"HEX!" Chief Briar yelled, unable to see past the smoke cloud that had engulfed them.
"She's fine," Hawk commented, nonchalantly cleaning one of her swords. Chief Briar's head whipped around to her. He planned to bite her head off. He wanted to know just how she could be so calm!
Ariana hit the ground. She was thrown from the smoke.
Johnny walked out, unharmed. He merely dusted off his shoulders, "Well that was… Anti-climactic," He sneered, "I mean c'mon! I've been gone for what? Fifteen years? That's the best hero you've got?!" He certainly wasn't happy.
"Hawk…" Chief Vincent started.
"I'm thinking of what I can do next, don't start," She replied.
"No," The Police Chief replied, "I was going to say that I suggest you duck," He raised his hand over his hand, "Officers! Weapons at the ready! Safety off! Locked and loaded, get ready to fire!" The dozen or so officers he had behind him collected themselves quickly after such a shock and raised their weapons.
Johnny shook his head, "C'mon, that didn't work last time. What makes you think it'll work now?"
Chief Briar's eyes narrowed. He was having difficulty controlling himself. He knew Ariana was lying unconscious only a few feet away. He couldn't bear to look at her for fear that he would snap. He couldn't afford to rush in half-cocked, trying to fight Johnny Rancid who was empowered by supernatural energies. His grip tightened on his own pistol.
"Weapons down!" He finally barked out, "Don't waste your ammunition!"
"But, sir -" The officer's protests didn't last long.
"I said now!" He demanded, "Lower. Your weapons!" One by one they obeyed his order, but they never took their eyes off of Johnny or his crew of bikers.
Johnny smirked, "That's better…" He glanced over to Hawk, "Hey birdy, you gave up kind of quickly back there. You let the little magic girl there get her ass kicked," Chief Briar spit on the ground, glaring daggers at Johnny, but he ignored it, "You want to fight me some more? Now that the small fry is out of our way?" He asked. He held his arms out to his sides.
"I'll even give you a free hit!"
Hawk looked up from wiping her blade down, "Mmm… Nah. Not right now anyway."
Johnny's mouth twisted in to a sneer once again, "Bah! Well I'm not gonna wait here all day!" He turned on his heels and stalked back toward his motorbike.
"You'll have to Johnny!" Chief Briar called to him. Johnny stopped and looked at the police chief over his shoulder, "We may not be able to harm you, and I'm well aware you can protect your crew too," Vincent leaned back against his police cruiser, "But we can sure as hell stay here, and keep you out of Jump City a little longer."
Johnny turned around fully, and he smirked, "Oh really? Is that so, Chief Piggy?"
"I'm going to assume that you have an energy limit," Chief Briar started. He put an unlit cigarette between his lips and lit with his silver zippo lighter, "We've got three police barricades stationed on this bridge, including this one. The more time you spend getting through us, the more energy you waste, and by the time you get off of this bridge, you'll have a hundred or so other police officers swarming you."
Chief Briar exhaled a puff of smoke, "So, c'mon Johnny, make my day and try get past us."
Hawk looked up from her blade and stopped her cleaning. She stood up and twirled her blade, showing that she was on the police's side.
Johnny slowly nodded, "All right… Fair assumption. I could easily tear through you guys myself… I'd waste a bit of energy doing it, but my boys here would have no trouble at all clearing out the charred wreckage when I'm done with you," Johnny's crew let loose battle cries, waving bats and chains in the air, firing their laser pistols off in a show.
"But… Why bother doing all of that," His lips slowly pulled back in to a large grin, "When I have a trump card!" The tarp covering the back of one of Johnny's trucks were pulled apart like the curtains of a play to unveil the set. What was brought to light made the blood in Chief Briar's veins run cold.
"Start screamin'" One of Johnny's crew banged on the side of the truck and several people, adult and child, and they screamed and cried out to them. Some reached through the gaps between the cage-like cover on the back of the truck if they could. They begged for the police to help them. He could several children crying. Chief Briar couldn't tell how many were really in the back of that truck, but he could guess at least twelve or fourteen. All of them were wearing electronic collars.
"What the hell is this?" Chief Briar shouted.
"They're -" Johnny paused. He glanced over his shoulder toward the screaming people, "They're m -" Johnny winced. The people only become louder, "Ahem! I was saying that they're my -" His shoulders slumped and the grey-skinned villain groaned, his eyes rolling back.
"They just won't shut up!" He whirled on his captives, "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" A short burst of flames shot around Johnny and the people flinched back. They tried to hide in the shadows of the truck, whimpering and sobbing. Johnny was silent for a moment, just waiting for one of them to make even the slightest loud noise to interrupt him again, but when that didn't happen, he turned back to Chief Briar.
"They're my gambling chips," Johnny stated with a grin.
Vincent glared daggers at Johnny, while the grey-skinned man grinned from ear to ear. He was tempted to do what that smile was threatening to, and just rip the bastard's face in half. His actions up to now certainly called for it.
Johnny reached in to his pants pocket and withdrew a come which he used to slick his red hair back, "So, what's your choice. We could have a firefight here and now, I won't even use my barricades, and those people in that van die… And everyone else goes with them," He jerked his head back towards the truck whose contents had yet to be revealed, "And when that's all said and done, I'll break out the big guns, mow down all of the survivors, and go have fun in Jump City while the Police Department is scrambling around like chickens with their heads cut off, having no one to lead them."
He said it so nonchalantly. It made bile rise in the chief's throat, "And, there's a good chance little miss hero there will get caught in the crossfire too," He teased, motioning to the prone Ariana lying not too far away from them. Chief Briar glanced in her direction, and his eyes snapped back to Johnny with much more intense glare. If looks could kill, Johnny Rancid would've been dead a dozen times over.
He stood there with the same smile.
"And option B is that you tell your men to move so we can get in freely. You tell them to leave us be, and I'll let the people go," Rancid stated, "Oh, and the ninja-archer bitch has to back off too," He jerked his head in the Hawk's direction. She twirled her swords in a threatening manner.
Hawk took a step forward and immediately Johnny had his guns out, trained on her. Chief Briar stepped in between them.
"Enough!" He snapped. He held his hand out to the woman, and she took a step back after a moment, "Johnny… I have no control over her. What she does is her business."
"Tch, well if she doesn't want to see a few dozen people go up in a blaze, then I would suggest she backed off," Johnny stated with a knowing smirk. He brought out a detonator that fit in his grasp. The chief's eyes widened considerably.
"…What are you talking about? You planted explosives on this bridge?!" He asked.
Johnny shook his head, "Nah, each and every one of those innocent civilians inside that truck there are hardwired with explosives. The collars are filled with a mix of C-4 and Syntax… If I had to guess, about ten pounds on each of the adults, and two or three pounds worth on each of the kids."
"No wonder you're so willing to give up your bargaining chips," The chief grumbled, "How do I know you won't set them off when you reach the end of the bridge, or in Jump City? Either one of those trucks could be filled with the stuff!" Vincent argued, pointing an accusing finger at Johnny.
"I'm nothing if not a… Honest guy… Snrk!" He suppressed a laugh. His shoulders shook with just how hard he was trying not to laugh, but he failed, and he threw his head back in howling laughter, "Sorry! Oh man I thought I could say that with a straight face, but Ohohoho! Nope! No, I failed, Bwahahaha!"
"It would make my day to just put one right between your eyes, Rancid…" The chief growled.
"Ah ah ah! It ain't happenin' today, King Piggy!" Rancid laughed, "If you choose option B, then I will let the people go. I won't blow them all to hell either. The bombs will deactivate ten minutes after I leave. Just wait for the red light to turn off, okay?" He asked.
"You're still too willing for my taste," Chief Briar replied, "Are you that willing to kill your crew too?"
"Hell no! We'll move aside and let that truck there barrel through your barricade and it'll take out the bridge… And who ever happens to be near the blast zone. I'll just make a bridge for the rest of us to cross over."
Johnny walked back to his bike and through his leg over the seat, "I have no reason to kill you and your little pigs," Johnny stated, "I could take on a couple dozen all by myself now. I like a challenge. Where's the challenge for me if I wipe out most of the police force here and now?" Johnny asked.
"…Why'd you come back, Johnny?" Chief Briar asked him, "This place is no better shape than when you and all the other villains left. So, why come back? There isn't much else for you to steal? Is it for your reputation? Just for shits and giggles? What?"
Johnny smirked, "Just because I left the town way back when, doesn't mean that I didn't keep myself up to date. I read newspaper articles and watched the news and shit. I've been hearing a lot of stuff lately. Some samurai vigilante or something or other, cutting people up. Reports of some ninja guy in red. Some magical girl helping the police…" He glanced over to Ariana for a brief second and Chief Briar took a step toward her, "And that kid… Uhm… The one who ripped a door off of a trashed tow truck. That had to be something…"
Johnny opened his arms wide, "Villains love easy paydays. We just love it when there is no one there to get in our way. But, after a while, if all you have is shit cops running around, trying to stop you and no real challenge, then it gets boring. I came back because I wanted a challenge. I could probably find some super-powered brats anywhere across the nation, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back to my old stomping grounds."
Chief Briar and Johnny Rancid held a stare down. Neither of them blinked. A cold gust blew by them, and Chief Briar shook his head, "I remember you from my days as a regular beat cop, patrolling Jump City streets from nine to five. You were some petty street thug with nothing but a fast bike and sharpshooting skills to your name and what little reputation you had back then," Johnny sneered, but Chief Briar didn't flinch.
"You're certainly a lot worse now… But, with everything you had been doing to get here… All of those well-planned routes you took to evade capture and tear through cities and towns with little to no resistance, I would've thought you'd be smarter."
Chief Briar slowly raised his right hand with his index and middle finger together pointing at Johnny, and his thumb point up at an angle, "It may not happen today, or tomorrow… I doubt it'll happen anytime soon, but there's no way I'm letting you go to some cushy prison just so you can break out again. I'm gonna put one right between your eyes, Rancid, one of these days."
"Bang. Count your blessings up till then."
Chief kept his eyes on Johnny as he reached up to his collar, "Unit commanders, tell all officers to stand down. All weapon's safety are to be on. There will be no firing on Johnny Rancid, I repeat, you all are to hold your fire. This is an order."
[Sir?!]
[You can't be serious!?]
"That. Was. An. Order!" Chief Briar barked, glaring daggers at Rancid still, "Johnny Rancid has civilians strapped with explosives. All officers are to stand down immediately; we can't put these people's lives in danger! I won't say it again; all units are to stand down!"
He didn't wait for them to reply. He motioned to his men and women to stand down as well. Reluctantly, one by one, they lowered their weapons. Rancid and his group were chuckling to themselves.
"I pick option B," Chief Briar stated.
"That'll do, Pig," Johnny replied, "That'll do…" He watched as Chief Briar walked back to the downed girl and placed her in the back of a squad car. He got in to the driver's seat, and along with the rest of his officers stationed at his barricade, started their drive to their end of the bridge.
Johnny glanced toward the woman biker, "You got something to say?" He asked her.
She didn't reply. Johnny waited and waited, but when she remained quiet, he turned his back on her and walked back to his bike, "Rancid," He stopped, and glanced over his shoulder at her, "I'll be watching you like a hawk."
"Whatever."
The woman sheathed both of her swords, and went back to her motorcycle. She revved the engine, and peeled out, leaving a trail of smoke as she spun around. She held her right hand high above her head and raised her middle finger, a second later and she sped off in a wheelie.
"Tch, bitch…" Johnny spat as he threw his leg over the seat of his own motorcycle. His engine roared to life and flames spat from the exhaust, "Jump City is ours boys! Let's roll out! Ahahahahaha!"
"Ugh… Mm… My head…" Ariana stirred awake. She rolled over slowly, and as her senses slowly returned, and she began to realize where she was. She was moving, or at least wherever she was moving, and she could feel it slowing down. She looked around and discovered she was in the back of a car.
Her hand balled tightly in to a fist. Glowing purple energy surrounded her fist…
"Calm down, you're in the back of my cruiser," Chief Briar said.
Ariana shot up, "Dad! What's going on? Did we win?" She whirled around, looking out the back window. She paled considerably seeing Johnny and his crew riding fast toward them. She turned around slowly, "Dad?" She whispered.
"He had civilians in one of the trucks…" He answered, "A firefight would've killed most of them… And they're rigged with explosives. The bridge probably would've gone with them… Johnny's crew too. But that… all of those poor people. It's not worth it."
Ariana was speechless. She slowly turned to look over her shoulder, and there was Rancid. He passed them by on his way in to Jump City along with several dozen laughing bikers. She could hear them whooping and hollering after their victory. One of the trucks came to halt, and a couple officers stepped around back, and began to help men, women and even some children out of the back.
They were all in tears. Frightened, and holding tightly to their loved ones. All of them wore black collars around their necks.
"Johnny won… Today," Chief Briar stated. He didn't look. He just kept his eyes ahead of them, gripping the wheel tightly.
"Wh – What about those people?!" Ariana screamed, suddenly finding her voice. She pulled herself up and between the front two seats. She grabbed him by the collar of his trench coat, "He could detonate the collars now! They'll die! How could you do this?!" She screamed, tears brimming in her eyes.
He silently wrapped his arms around his daughter, and hugged her, "Just hope. He said that he wouldn't detonate the collars, and I had no choice but to believe him. If he's telling the truth, then we live to fight him another day. If he is lying, then I love you Ariana, I want to be the last thing you hear from me. We may not be related by blood, but you're my daughter. For ten minutes we just have to wait."
Ariana slowly wrapped her arms around him, and thanked him. The two of them stepped out of the police cruiser and leaned against, watching the people as the last one was unloaded. Ariana watched the truck peel out, sending them in to coughing fits, and making the younger ones cry. She hated this… They had failed.
Johnny had finally made it in to Jump City. And for the next ten minutes all the police could do was sit on their hands and not get in his way otherwise they were all as good as dead. She doubted she could contain the explosives even for a few seconds if those collars were to go off.
"Hey, Dad?" Ariana spoke up.
"Yeah?"
"… Do you… think that there are in other heroes in this city?" She asked him.
He was silent for a moment. He finally did shrug his shoulders, "Could be."
"… Do you think… they'll help us?" She asked.
"Johnny's strong now. Very strong…" Chief responded, "I hope they do, Ariana. I hope they do." He took another toke from his cigarette, "What's with all of the questions?"
Ariana glanced down at her feet. She closed her eyes to think, "I… Might have an idea." A smile stretched across her face.
And fin. Chapter 11 is done.
