Chapter 10
Lauren POV
"What!? How? She wasn't bitten, and even if she was it shouldn't have affected her cause she's a wolf!" Caroline exclaimed.
"It must have something to do with what that witch did to her, a spell to give her the effects of a werewolf bite even though she is a wolf herself," Elijah concluded.
Kol pulled me against him and I buried my face into his chest and wrapped my arms around his waist, "What I want to know is if it is fatal or not. If she is affected by the symptoms, can she die from it too? We need to bring Bonnie into this. We should probably call her family too."
Caroline pulled her phone out, "I'll call Bonnie to let her know, see if she can find anything on it, and I'll let Pete and Lori know."
Klaus spoke up, "You should call the Salvatores too; the people that are cleaning up and fixing the windows are coming in fifteen minutes."
Caroline nodded, "The sandwich guy's coming too. Elena can do that." She walked away dialing the numbers. Elena sighed and pulled out her phone to call the one of the brothers when the doorbell rang. Elena hit call and a buzzing came from the front door.
Elena frowned and ended the call, "I guess they're here to check up on me even though I told them not to. It's not like they listen to me anyway, especially since I turned." She huffed and followed Elijah to the door. Kol lead me to island seat again but sat down beside me for support if need be. Rebekah got up and went to get more blood from the fridge as Klaus crossed his arms and leaned against the counter beside me.
Caroline came back into the kitchen went to sit on the counter across from Klaus, sighing.
"I told Pete and his aunt. Bonnie too…we're kind of dumping a lot of this onto her, don't you guys think?" she asked concerned.
I shrugged tiredly, "I guess, we're asking her for help with Mikael, the barrier spell, and now this. We kind of are relying on her a bit."
Klaus shrugged, "She's the only witch close by. I do have my witches that…owe me favors, but they would take too long to get here," Klaus explained. "Besides, nothing beats a Bennett witch," he went on smugly. Caroline rolled her eyes at him just as Damon and Stefan walked in behind Elijah and Elena.
"What the hell happened to you guys?" Damon asked, eloquent as ever. He gestured behind him to the foyer and pile of bodies in the front yard.
"And what do you need us for, we're not your lapdogs, you know," Stefan added, frowning.
Klaus nodded to Elijah, "Perhaps you could explain it to them simply, brother."
Elijah sighed and turned back to the Salvatores with Elena standing next to him with her arms crossed and her mouth turned down in a frown.
"Well, earlier we were attacked by a group of vampires and humans, apparently compelled by Mikael, a witch tortured and put a spell on Lauren, and put a barrier spell on the house." He turned to the others, "Did I miss anything?"
"Stake," I mumbled with my head propped up by my elbow on the counter.
Elijah nodded, "Ah, yes. Mikael used the attack as a distraction to retrieve the white oak stake from the premises."
Stefan and Damon stood there with their mouths hanging open for a few seconds. Finally Damon spoke up, "Papa Original's back? I thought Klaus took care of him. In fact, I'm sure of it, can't really forget how Steffy stopped me from killing Klaus who then killed his own father."
Klaus narrowed his eyes and flared his nostrils, "Mikael is not my father."
Damon waved him off, "Yeah, we know, the Original witch had an affair and the world's biggest mistake was born, we know." Klaus stiffened and I was surprised to hear Kol growl at Damon and stand but Caroline beat them to it.
She jumped off the counter and flashed in front of Damon, narrowing her eyes at him, "Shut up, already! We aren't here to discuss Original family history, I'm surprised you didn't get killed years ago with the way you run your mouth to the absolute wrong people! And don't be a hypocrite, I hear you didn't have the best relationship with your father either, am I wrong?"
Damon froze in shock at the blonde's verbal assault, but his blue eyes narrowed at the mention of his father and he growled, taking a step forward and reaching for her. Before he could touch her Klaus had him by the throat and a few inches off the ground.
"Don't even think about touching her, Salvatore. I'll rip your arms from your body before you get within feet of her. I only had Elena ask you hear so you can do a little compelling for us, so skip the pathetic insults and do as we say, got it?"
Damon gripped Klaus' wrist struggling to breathe as he choked but nodded quickly. Klaus dropped him and stood in front of Caroline with his arms crossed angrily.
Damon coughed as Stefan pulled him to his feet.
"You okay?" Stefan asked his brother. Damon glared in Klaus' direction but nodded as he stood up straight.
Stefan replied, "Good." Then smacked him upside the head, hard.
"Ow! What the hell, Stefan!?" Damon growled.
Stefan smiled, "Caroline's right, you don't know when to keep your mouth shut." Caroline smiled lightly along with the rest of the Originals.
Elena stepped towards the brothers, "We just need you to compel the workers who are coming to fix the windows so that they ignore and forget about the pile of bodies on the front lawn. We can't leave the house to get close enough. Also the sandwich delivery person."
Stefan scrunched his brows together, "Wait, didn't you say there was a barrier spell on the house? So aren't we stuck in here too?"
Damon rolled his eyes and threw his hands up, "Great, nice going Original du—UGH," Stefan elbowed him in the stomach before he could finish his inevitably stupid comment.
Kol sighed in exasperation, sitting next to me, "Don't get your panties in a twist," they both scowled at that but said nothing. "The barrier spell was made so that it only affects me and my siblings, Lauren, Caroline, and Elena. We were all in the house when it occurred so I would assume that might be the reason why it is just us that is confined. Anyone else can enter and leave."
Elijah turned his head towards the door, "We will explain further later, but now we require your help. The repairmen have arrived and are…shocked." Damon and Stefan nodded and glanced at Elena standing close to Elijah before disappearing out the front door and startling the workers before they began compelling them to ignore the bodies, just work, then leave and forget they were here. When they were done, the workers quickly began replacing the windows and taking away the debris.
I was so hungry, and thankfully the sandwich guy arrived and Damon took care of him and sent him off with some money. He brought in two bags of sandwiches, and my stomach growled loudly when the heavenly scent reached my sensitive nose. Everyone looked at me, amused, and I blushed slightly before reaching for the bag in Damon's left hand.
He held it away from me and smiled arrogantly, "Not so fast, how about you split it with me, you guys didn't exactly order for us, now did you?" I scowled at him and reached again only to be fail again.
He smirked, "How can you even know that yours is in this bag?"
I rolled my eyes at him, "I can smell it in there. Werewolf senses, remember? Besides, liverwurst smells much different than turkey, meatball, steak, and roast beef."
He looked surprised, but still played keep away as I got off my seat to try again, getting supremely pissed, I was REALLY hungry. I staggered a bit as I darted at him, reaching for MY sandwich, and nearly tackled Elijah had Kol not caught me.
Elena scowled, "Damon, stop being annoying, she's not in the best condition as it is, just give us our food, I'll share mine with you if you want." I vaguely heard Caroline call Damon something that made the others chuckle but my attention was elsewhere. My mind was full of fog, I clung to Kol's arm that held me up as I tried to make sense of my surroundings which seemed to have blurred. I looked up to see a face that I would never forget by the doorway behind Klaus. A woman with long, straight jet-black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a cruel smirk on her pale face flashed her fangs at me. My eyes clouded over with red and my body shook with rage.
Kol POV
I held onto Lauren's unsteady figure as the others bickered with and insulted the older Salvatore. I quite enjoyed it actually, he was cocky for such a young vampire. I felt Lauren shift in my arms, she was shaking. I glanced at her to see she was staring murderously at Rebekah. I frowned and reached up to touch her shoulder when she ripped herself away from me and leaped at my sister. Rebekah was too focused on Damon being made fun of to notice until the last second.
She turned at the last second and screamed as Lauren tackled her in her butterfly shorts and black tank top. Everyone stopped teasing Damon to stare wide-eyed at Lauren as she screamed curse words, attempting to claw Bekah's face off with her bare hands.
At first nobody moved, then I darted forward and dragged Lauren off of my sister as Nik pulled Bekah out from under her and helped her up.
Bekah was shocked, but she quickly became furious and Nik held her around the waist as she tried to reach Lauren.
I struggled to keep a hold on Lauren as Bekah screamed back at her, "What the hell!? What the FUCK was that for? Kol, you better control your little BITCH before I rip her head off."
I glared at my sister before turning my attention to Lauren who was fighting wildly to get to Rebekah. She continued screaming at her, "I will fucking KILL YOU, you heartless bitch! See how you feel when YOU'RE dead! Do you hear me!? I WILL RIP YOU APART!"
Everyone was perplexed, what could have caused such a murderous reaction from her? We all stood confused as to what was going on when Lauren threw her elbow into my stomach and I faltered enough for her to break free, and she immediately began changing. Within seconds she was a large white wolf who looked nearly deranged and was snarling at Bekah, who stilled as the angry wolf focused on her. She immediately yelped and flashed away as Lauren lunged at her.
I finally took action, "Well, don't just stand there, help me stop her!" The baby vampires looked hesitant, glancing at one another then back at me before darting into the hallway towards Rebekah's screams and the white wolfs snarls.
We found Rebekah in the living room, trying to stay out of reach of Lauren's teeth. Leaping from the tables and chairs and even the bookcase's ledges. She headed for the stairs and ran to the top then jumped over the second floor railing. Lauren followed, but landed hard and collapsed on her side after hearing a crack. I quickly dashed towards her and held her down as she tried to get up again to go after Bekah, despite definitely having broken a bone. I looked to Elijah and he helped me hold her down as she thrashed around. I held my grip on her chest, forcing her into the floor, and grabbed her head, holding it to the floor too. I kneeled down so I could look into her hazel eyes. They were full of rage and pain.
I held her firmly, "Lauren! Look at me, look at me! Calm down, Bekah hasn't done anything, please calm down and explain what is going on." Her movements slowed with every word I spoke as she stared back at me. Finally she was still, though breathing heavily. She glanced around the room at everybody with me watching her cautiously. She blinked a bit and seemed to realize where she was, all the anger and pain replaced by confusion. I nodded at Elijah and let her sit up. I watched her, concerned. She was whipping her head back and forth as if she was looking for something, waiting for it to appear.
She finally looked at me and changed back to her human form in her pajamas, hair in a loose bun. She was sitting on the floor looking like she had seen a ghost.
I reached out to her, stroking the side of her face, "Lauren? What happened, are you alright, darling?"
Rebekah scoffed from next to Klaus by opposite wall, "How about if I'm alright, she did try to maul me for no reason."
I shot her a look before turning back to Lauren and waited for her to respond. She shook her head slowly and kept glancing around the room every once in a while.
"I…I don't really know. My head got all foggy, then I looked up and saw her. I just got so angry, I wanted to kill her, rip her apart. I saw red, and it's a bit of a mess after that." She leaned onto her left hand and winced, sitting up immediately, holding her wrist tenderly.
I felt it gently, "You broke your wrist. You were chasing Bekah around the house, you followed her up the stairs then leaped after her when she jumped down, and we could hear something crack. I know Bekah's annoying, sweetheart, but even I thought that was a little unwarranted."
She smiled hesitantly at my joke, but it quickly disappeared. She grabbed my hand and held onto it in her lap.
Caroline interrupted, "Wait, you said you saw someone, 'her', was that Rebekah or someone else?"
Lauren was silent for a moment as she stared at the floor before she looked up and said, "It was one of them. One of the vampires that killed my parents."
Lauren POV
I took deep breathes trying to calm down and make myself believe that she wasn't ever there. All of the others looked at each other awkwardly, not sure of what to say.
"It must be a hallucination as a result of the spell," Elijah stated.
I nodded, "Yeah, I know, it's just hard to tell the difference."
Elena frowned, "What do you mean tell the difference? If she's real or not? I thought they all died."
I shook my head, "There were two guys and a woman, my parents killed one of the males, Peter bit the other one and the woman ran away with the one that was bitten after giving my parents fatal injuries." With every word my anger returned and my features twisted into a scowl.
"So she's the only one that survived," Kol murmured.
I nodded again, "She's the one who got the word out that the legendary wolf existed and was as deadly as the stories said. If I ever got the chance, I'd kill her; for killing my parents and for exposing us," I answered, my anger brewing. Kol rubbed a hand up and down my back, trying to calm me down.
We paused when we heard footsteps on the driveway then the doorbell rang.
I sighed and Kol helped me up, my wrist almost healed. Elijah went to answer the door, Elena following, reluctant to let him go alone after the last time he answered the door. Elijah noticed this and the corner of his mouth twitched up. They came back into the living room with Bonnie and Peter, carrying a grimoire and bag filled with different herbs.
"I found a way to remove the barrier spell," Bonnie announced as she walked in. Everyone perked up, but Kol asked quickly, "What about the spell on Lauren, can you do anything about that?"
Before Bonnie could answer I dashed into the kitchen and retched into the sink, the scarlet liquid spilling out of my mouth and onto the stainless steel. Caroline and Elena appeared next to me and held my hair back as it had fallen out of the elastic, rubbing my back gently.
I heard Bonnie continue, "Unfortunately there's nothing I can do to stop it. I found records of the spell in a grimoire from a witch in Europe in the 1700s, but there was no way to make it go away. The witch used it as a way to punish a werewolf pack that had killed her family, but thankfully it wasn't fatal, although she did kill them afterwards."
I heard Kol sigh in relief as I wiped my mouth, "Okay, but what do we do in the mean time? She has to suffer through this constant pain."
"She just has to let it run its course, it should last as long as a normal bite would then the effects should fade away. How long has she had the symptoms?"
"Since this morning after the fight," Kol responded.
"Then it should go away by late tonight, maybe early morning," Bonnie answered. "The only thing I could do is maybe ease her pain, her whole body is full of pain. I should be able to relieve some of it if I can transfer it into someone else."
"I'll do it," Kol immediately responded as I washed out my mouth and hands then walked back into the room with Caroline and Elena on either side watching me carefully. I went and sat next to Kol who was now seated on a couch across from Bonnie and Peter who stood in front of the fireplace with her spell book and herbs out on the floor in the middle of the seating area. Rebekah sat with Stefan on one couch across from Klaus and Elijah, Damon remained standing with Caroline and Elena.
I sighed and curled up into Kol's side resting my head on his shoulder and he wrapped an arm around me. I smiled at Pete who smiled gently back. Bonnie was right; my whole body ached, especially when I moved. I didn't want Kol to be in pain, but I just wanted some relief from this pain, he probably wouldn't listen anyway.
Bonnie went on, "I'll do it after I take care of the barrier spell. I found out that the witch simply modified a normal barrier spell so that it only confined the people whose essence she locked onto, she used personal items or something like blood or hair to make it stronger. I'm going to need something like that from each of you to break it."
"What if we all gave you some blood?" Stefan asked.
"That would work," Bonnie answered. "Just put it all in a bowl and I can start." Klaus disappeared into the kitchen and reappeared with a small bowl and a kitchen knife. He handed the bowl to Elijah then cut his wrist with the knife, letting the blood spill into it for a few seconds before it healed. This continued on; Elijah, Rebekah, Caroline, Elena, Kol and me. I took longer to heal. As a werewolf and due to my sickness my wrist still bleeding. Before I could cover it, Kol grabbed my arm. I looked at him questioningly, and he leaned his head toward my wrist. Bonnie took the bowl and threw some herbs into it while chanting, everyone had their eyes on her.
I tugged on my arm a bit, "Um, don't I have werewolf venom in my system? That wouldn't be the smartest thing to do," I whispered to him. He leaned forward and inhaled with his nose close to the wound.
"I don't smell any venom in your blood. Perhaps the spell didn't put any venom in you, just caused the symptoms." He looked at me for permission and I hesitated before nodding. He dropped his head to my wrist and slowly ran his tongue across the gash. Veins appeared around his eyes as he lifted his head and sighed, and I shivered in unexpected pleasure. He smiled at me before he brought my wrist to his mouth and kept roughly licking the wound, forcing blood out of the cut until it had healed. He moved his hand from my arm to my hand and twined his fingers with mine.
"You taste amazing," he purred into my ear as I watched Bonnie chant with her hands over the bowl, palms up.
I smiled, lightly and blushed a little, "Thanks, I guess." He chuckled and turned his head to watch as Bonnie finished the spell with the fireplace roaring and the candles flaring, her voice rising before everything abruptly stopped.
Bonnie looked up and sighed, "It's done. The barrier should be down."
Everyone got up and headed for the front door, passing the workers who were done and packing up. Klaus was the first to reach out through the doorway, his hand crossing the threshold. He grinned and flashed outside onto the lawn. Rebekah followed him with a matching smile, then Elijah stepped onto the driveway. Elena and Caroline ran outside excitedly and danced around the grass with Peter walking after them. Kol held onto my hand as we stepped outside slowly onto the steps and I sat down. I wish I could run around, but my body ached too much and I just didn't have the energy. Kol looked down at me then at his siblings enjoying being outside with Caroline chasing after Klaus after he teased her, and Elijah walking next to Elena, talking calmly with her, Rebekah looking up at the sky and smiling. He then sat down next to me and slipped his hand into mine. I smiled at him and squeezed his hand before turning to watch them all, Stefan and Damon walking outside and teasing Rebekah.
Bonnie came out onto the steps in front of us and looked down.
"Do you want to try the spell now?"
Kol looked to me and I nodded. He helped me up and we followed Bonnie into the house towards the living room. Just as we reached it I muttered, "Shit," before taking off for the kitchen once again to spit up more blood. Kol stood behind me and held my hair back until I was finished and rinsed out my mouth and the sink, cleaning up and heading back for the living room to Bonnie. I sat down with Kol on a couch, a little embarrassed. Bonnie knelt in front of us with her grimoire open and a loose sheet sitting in between the pages. She glanced down at the book before gesturing to us.
"Hold both your hands in each other's, you need to be physically connected for this to work," she explained. We turned towards one another and grasped our hands together, staring into each other's eyes. Bonnie began chanting quietly, after a few seconds I felt the pain lesson, some of it leaving my body and I sighed. At the same time, Kol stiffened and held on tighter to my hands, the pain flowing into his body. After a few seconds Bonnie stopped chanting and the pain stayed at a dull throb, less than it was before. Kol remained stone-like for about half a minute more before relaxing his muscles and his grip on my hands.
Bonnie spoke, "It will ease your pain for an hour or so. I've made it so that all Kol has to do is maintain physical contact with you and focus, and he can absorb some of the pain for a minute then it will stop. Do this every hour and you should be okay. They spell will wear off by morning and so should the effects of the werewolf venom spell."
I nodded, "Thank you, Bonnie," I smiled at her gratefully. She smiled and nodded at me then glanced at Kol before leaving with her spell book and supplies.
I turned to Kol, "Thank you too, I can actually relax for a while now," I sighed and leaned against him, closing my eyes. I could feel Kol take a deep breath and lean back so we were lying down on the couch with me draped across his body, my head on his chest with my auburn hair splayed out, and my arms around his neck. He wrapped his arms around my waist and relaxed. We let ourselves relax, the tension leaving our bodies and allowed ourselves to fall asleep.

Everyone else walked back into the house as it was beginning to get dark outside. Bonnie had already left a few minutes ago and Klaus had lit the pile of bodies on fire to burn for the next few hours. Klaus was teasing Caroline and Rebekah was trying to restrain from ripping Damon's spleen through his back when they came to a stop in the living room. They all fell silent when they saw Kol lying asleep on the couch with Lauren sleeping on top of him, his arms around her waist and her arms around his neck.
Elijah smiled lightly and Elena glanced at him, doing the same.
"I don't think I've ever seen Kol as peaceful as he is when he is with her," Elijah commented quietly.
Elena nodded, "I think she has a good influence on him. Her hands aren't exactly clean but none of ours are; she has the right intentions and a good heart."
"And nobody sees this as weird?" Damon asked loudly.
Stefan, Caroline, and Elena turned to glare at him as Kol stirred on the couch. He opened his eyes and turned his head to glare at the Salvatore and growl before standing and picking up the still unconscious Lauren bridal style. He walked over to the group with her in his arms.
"Shut up, Salvatore. This is the only rest she's gotten all day, she was in too much pain to relax before," he hissed quietly.
Damon hesitated before he crossed his arms over his chest and shrugged in silent apology. Elena shook her head and huffed angrily and Elijah rested a hand on her shoulder, making the eldest Salvatore narrow his blue eyes at the contact.
Caroline looked at the redhead curiously, "So how is she now? What exactly does the spell do?"
"The spell allows me to take some of her pain from her and transfer it into my body through physical contact. It should relieve her enough to get some rest and recover a bit. I have to do it about every hour, when the pain builds up again," Kol responded mutedly.
Caroline, Elena, and Stefan nodded while Rebekah wandered off to her room, uninterested now that nothing was happening. Peter walked over to Kol and looked at his sister, fast asleep. He touched her red hair and brushed it out of her face. His blue eyes locked with Kol's brown ones.
"You'll take care of her tonight, until the spell wear's off?"
Kol nodded, "I will, mate. I'll try to lessen the pain enough so she can sleep through it until morning. I'll take care of her."
Peter nodded in return and turned to the others. Stefan and Damon were by the doorway to the hallway.
"You need a ride Pete? Us and the girls are leaving," Damon asked.
"Yeah, I could use a ride home, I've got school in the morning anyway. We missed Monday and today, I can't afford to fail. As long as Lauren's alright," he said and looked back at his sister and Kol before walking over to the Salvatores. Caroline and Elena looked at each other before turning to the two brothers.
"Actually, we're gonna stay here tonight, if it's alright with you guys," Elena said and looked to Klaus and Elijah, who both nodded in agreement.
Damon furrowed his brow, "Why would you want to stay here with them if you didn't have to?"
Elena sighed, "We want to stay with Lauren until she's better, then we can help her get home."
Damon stepped forward angrily.
"Damon," Stefan warned, "it's their choice."
Damon ignored him, "But you don't have to, the Originals will do that, she'll be fine."
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Because we're her friends, we want to make sure she's okay. Besides, she might appreciate a familiar face around here besides an Original, no offense."
Klaus smirked, "None taken, sweetheart."
She smiled before turning back to them, "We're staying; you can't make us leave."
Stefan put his hand on his brother's shoulder before he did something stupid yet again. Damon scowled and glared at the Originals before turning around and leaving. Stefan smiled apologetically before following his brother out the door.
Kol excused himself and went upstairs slowly as not to wake Lauren and gently laid her on the bed and covering her with the sheets and blanket. He quickly changed into pajama pants and a t-shirt and slipped under the covers with her before falling asleep.
Almost every hour, Kol could sense Lauren becoming restless and he would wake up and ease her pain, causing her to relax and to return to her deep sleep. He repeated this until 3am, her heart beat and breathing slowed to a normal pace and all of the tension left her body, the spell was no longer active. They both slept peacefully in each other's arms until light from the window peaked in to the room, stirring them awake.
