Windsong – Chapter 10

The years passed peacefully for Windsong as she visited with her new friends and set out to do what she knew to do. Together with Sandy, Song continued to learn new things about herself, but all the while she kept watch on her sister's family as she continued to search for her own. Following her Gail along the western sea, she flew out over her home country of Wales as she whistled up a song on the wind, as her wings brought her down in front of a blue trimmed house, where a young couple sat with their new daughter.

Beaming, Windsong waited behind a tree as she watched them walk back into House with a smile.

Meanwhile, at the Pole, North choose at that very moment to release the Northern Lights, where at different corners of the World, the Guardians immediately took notice. In no time at all, they all assembled in North's Globe Room as he said, "Eggnog, eggnog anybody?"

"This better be good, North," Bunny said as he warmed his hands.

As Sandy pantomimed his thoughts, North said, "I know, I know, but I obviously would not have called you all out here if it were not important."

Tooth shushed her tiny fairies as North gestured with his hands and said, "The Boogeyman was here … at the Pole!"

As Sandy turned from Tooth and back to North, Tooth said, "Pitch? Pitch Black? Here?"

"Yes," North said determinedly, "and there was black sand covering the Globe."

"Wait-wait a minute, what do you mean 'black sand?'" Bunny asked.

"… And then, a shadow …"

"Hang on, I thought you said you saw Pitch," Bunny said, painting a small egg.

With a hand on his head, North muttered, "Well-a, not exactly."

"Not exactly?" Bunny asked, turning to Sandy. "Hey, Sandy, do you believe this guy?"

Sandy just shrugged as Bunny said, "You said it, Sandy."

As North continued to talk, Sandy watched as a yeti brought in a fancy tray of eggnog as he floated over to pick up one after the other. Briefly looking over his shoulder, he snuck another one as he turned to see North and Bunny still bickering. Pausing to see an elf lapping up his drink, he pulled it away from him as he caught sight of Manny moving in over North's skylight.

Dropping his cup, he madly pointed up towards the window as North and Bunny were still at it. Failing to attract their attention, he tried to whistle while his sands just jingled in attempt, while a music note and a flag waved on top of his head. Waving his hands, he failed to even attract Tooth's attention as she just flew by the two arguing Guardians.

"Tooth, can we see we are trying to argue?" North asked, hearing her chatter.

"Sorry, not all of us get to work one night a year, is that right, Sandy?" Tooth asked, turning to Sandy for but a moment.

Grinning with excitement, Sandy made an arrow point up, thinking Tooth would get the message, but as she thought for a second, Sandy just dropped his arms in frustration as he was left ignored.

Spying the little elf that was licking up the rest of his eggnog, he floated over there, tapping his foot for a moment before he suddenly picked up the elf by his hat and rang him like a bell.

Finally getting their attention, he just dropped the elf, made an image of the Moon appear above his head and just pointed up.

"Ah, Man in Moon," North said, finally getting the message. "Sandy, why didn't you say something?"

Letting off steam, Sandy just blew sand out of his ears as Manny illuminated his moonbeams down to touch the Guardian plague on the floor just beneath their feet.

A shadow of Pitch appeared as Bunny said, "It is Pitch," to which North just patted his belly in response.

"Manny, what must we do?" North asked his friend as a crystal arose out from beneath the plague.

"Ah, guys, do you know what this means," Tooth said.

"He's choosing a new Guardian?" North asked with a grin.

"Why?" Bunny asked. "Since when do we need help?"

"Must be big deal, Manny thinks we need help," North replied.

"I wonder who's going to be," Tooth said, seeing Sandy guess a clover. "Maybe a leprechaun?"

As the crystal began to light up, Bunny stood saying, "Please not the groundhog, please not the groundhog …"

In the crystal's blue mist, four images appeared as Jack Frost, Narain Hart, Windsong, and Casey Aqua appeared before them.

"Jack Frost?! He doesn't care about children," Bunny complained as he turned to North, who just ignored him and instructed him to take his yetis with him to "fetch" him back to the Pole.

Meanwhile, as Sandy was instructed to go get Narain and bring her there, Sandy just floated out and summoned his plane as he sped out under the Northern Lights. Thinking about Song, he just smiled in spite, knowing that she would fly out to the Pole when she saw the Northern Lights.

Meanwhile, Windsong peeked in the nursery window as she watched the tiny babe start to dream. Above where she hovered, streams of familiar golden dreamsand wavered around her as she bent out to stroke one. At her touch, a fleet of doves flocked around her at her touch.

Following one stream, she watched it as it phased right through the windowpane as it touched the little babe's forehead to reveal a golden seahorse floating about her tiny eyes.

Humming a little lullaby in tune with her dream, Song just hummed, 'Star bright, star light, may this dream of yours be filled with love and light …'

Gasping, Song stiffened as she saw a rippling black shadow pass through a crack in the wall as Pitch appeared, looking over the crib as the little babe continued to dream. Reaching out, baby Carrie just laughed as she batted at it. Seeing this before, Song just whispered, "No, no, no, no …"

Slicking back his spiked hair with a small chuckle, Pitch just crooned, "Aw, I thought I heard the sweet and carefree wings of a seahorse." Noting her giggle, he said, "Does she make you happy, little one, well there's only one thing missing … a touch of fear."

Watching him turn Carrie's little dream into a nightmare right then and there, it took everything in Windsong not to storm in there without a plan. Carrie's cries pulled at her heart as a memory flashed before her eyes. With her eyes tearing, Song forgot to muffle herself as she said, "Pitch, how dare you …"

Clamping her hands over her mouth, Song ducked down low as Pitch turned to the window to see nothing but the Moon as evening began to pour in. Seeing Sandy's streams of dreams clear away, Pitch just muttered as he said, "Enjoy them while you can … for soon fear shall take …"

A rough pillow stopped his monologue as he turned to see Carrie's mother strode in, her dark brown hair rushed aside, her emerald eyes streaming with anger.

Threatening to hit him again, she shouted, "I've heard about you. And, I'll only say this once, leave my baby girl alone!"

Seeing that she was believer in the Guardians, Pitch just ramped her back with a sweep of his dark sands as he said, "There will be nothing but fear … and darkness … and me."

A short knock in the side from one of Song's blows sent him staggering as Song stood in the window's silhouette as she said, "You heard her, get out of here!"

Seeing her shadow and her fierce eyes, Pitch didn't even shudder as he just phased through the window in a blink, not even looking back to see Song rush in helping her niece up.

Seeing her immediately, she just said, "Windsong?!"

"Anna, what was that noise?" another voice hollered to her from their bedroom as Anna smoothed off the dark dust off her nightgown.

"Nothing Richard, now go back to sleep. Carrie was just having a nightmare," Anna called as she picked her tiny darling into her arms and settled down with her in a rocking chair. "If I told him what was really going on, he would never believe me."

Carrie was still crying, even with her Mother there and it made Song think back about her past life with her kids and they had nightmares.

"Hey," Anna said, getting Song's attention. "Thank you, Aunt Melody … or would you prefer to be called by your given name?"

Chuckling, Song just made her wings vanish as she said, "I go by both. How are you, Anna?"

"Okay, for now," she said, peering down at her little baby. "I just wish I get could Carrie to stop crying. I can't believe that monster would do something like this to a baby, right as she was starting to dream …"

"Something tells me that what's he after …" Song said, pouring a bit of her moondust into her open hand with the other. "Especially after all this time."

"But, what can be done?"

"I don't know, but if the Guardians have anything to say about it, then Pitch will finally get what he has been asking for," Song said, coming over to gently blow the moondust over Carrie's wishful tears. Giggling, Carrie just settled down as Song said, "In the meantime, I'll just have to listen to what Manny would have me do."

"You're not a Guardian yet, Aunt Melody?" Anna asked softly.

Walking over to the window, Song just shook her head as she started to peer out.

"Even with what I was taught to believe, I keep forgetting that you went through something like this all those years ago …" Anna started to say as the Northern Lights just blazed past their window. "Is that …"

"Yes, the Northern Lights …" Song started to say as Manny summoned her in the path of the Lights. "I'm sorry I can't stay any longer, Anna, but I'm needed at the Pole."

As Anna just smiled with a nod, she watched from the window as Song unfurled her starlit wings and summoned her Gail as it whipped around her and rushed her out towards the North Pole, following the path of the Northern Lights.

New-improved Chapter 10!

As you know, I'm just trying to make this story flow a little better. So, going off from what I wrote last time, here is the new version. And yes, Melody's descendants know who she is, it's passed down from her sister's line of descendants. And so, I hope you enjoy it. :D
