The party was almost bittersweet. Surrounded by her friends and family on a beautiful night couldn't help shield the fact that her boyfriend would be sent to a journey over the summer that could change him forever. A journey she was not invited. Korra and Asami where on friend overload stuffing as much Kebabs and finger food in her mouth as they could and preventing her from engaging in small talk with the "distinguished guests".
Her worry almost prevented her from having a great time with Kai, who, oblivious to her worry was more excited to be in a place with 'such cool art'.
"So that's your grandfather, huh" he said eagerly, eyeing the painting for the fifth time with an intrigued smile on his face. "He looks regal". He added as I try to pry him back to the dancefloor as one of my favourite songs came on.
"I think he would have approved of you "Jinora said pointedly as he tried to scuffled a giggle form my not so great dance moves.
She tapped him lightly a blush forming on her checks as he gently swayed me to the beat. Mako placed a firm hand on his shoulder as Jinora greeted him and Bolin with a wide smile.
"Sorry, to steal him away."
"Its fine" She replied as Kai jokingly pleaded with me to not let him go. Bolin as always, failed to contain his excitement as they made their way to have their photographs taken for their portraits as per 'upper-class tradition'. They all looked wonderful in their suits Jinora's silent contemplation disturbed when she saw someone with Kai's similar green eyes entering her field of vision looking just as handsome.
"Wow you look beautiful" Skoochy commented unable to stop a smile that etched on his lips moments after his comment. She gave him a small smile in return causing a blush to creep on his face, as Su let out an intentionally loud cough.
We had a minute conversation, the awkwardness of the past couple of months faded as I tried to invite Su to the conversation with her annoyance in full view.
"May I have the last dance", Kai politely interrupted, placing his hand on my shoulder.
"Of course, you can" Jinora replied back formally, giving them both a hug as Kai and Skoochy simply shared nodes in recognition of each other's presence.
"He still likes you" He spoke surprisingly calm as they slowly made their way to the dance floor
"I know, I don't mean to make you jealous"
"I know" Jinora looked at him surprised. "We're not going to start brawling in the middle of the hall" he smirked, as he pushed a stand of her from her face.
Jinora raised her eyebrow even more shocked at his response.
"Let's just say we came to a mutual understanding… with a little help from Mako" he added
"Woah, I guess you don't need me for everything" she quipped.
"Oh, I'll always need you beautiful, just some things you have to let me handle by myself "he said knowingly, as the two danced slowly, his grip tightening on her waist.
"Is that code for this summer…"
"Unintentionally so, yes... I love you, you know that right" he spoke nervously his eyes not leaving hers.
"I know" she said, a warm smile looked back at him
"And if it's true…" Jinora hurriedly placed a finger on his lip, before placing her head to his chest, his heart beating fast in her ear.
"If it's true, then we'll figure it out. just promise me you'll come back to me, that you let us sort through it together" she added
"I promise" She looked up at him, his green eyes boring into hers with genuine admiration as she placed a small chaste kiss on his lips.
The music stopped. Their eyes not once leaving each other as they slowly parted ways.
I promise. He texted her again, reassuringly as she listened to music on her way to visit her grandmother for the summer. Her father looking at her through the car mirror silently.
