Chapter 11
David and Carol glared at each other, fear began to take over their entire bodies "I'm calling the police" said Carol scrambling around for her mobile phone.
"no sweetheart wait" muttered David placing his hand on top of hers "let's just think about this"
"what is there to think about!" steamed Carol "look at the note it's a threat!"
David pulled her close and stroked her cheek "I need to work it out Carol, we can't let the police deal with this, if they were going to catch the culprit of the shooting they would have at least made some progress by now, someone's out there Carol, someones waiting for me"
"who's waiting for who?" came Liams voice from the doorway, he was stood there looking casual in his scruffy school uniform, tie out of place, his shirt un-tucked.
David and Carol helped each other up, they were both still shaking, Liam on the other hand didn't seem to be acting his usual self, he didn't even ask why there was a rock with a note and shattered glass all over the floor.
"Liam did you see anyone outside just now?" David quizzed, under a minute has passed Liam must have seen something "nah" he replied sheepishly biting his fingernails.
"Just go to your room" instructed Carol firmly.
Liam grunted and did as he was told.
David thought this was strange, Liam never did what he was told, not without some kind of bribe or petty argument.
"David" started carol "whoever this person is, you have to put yourself in their shoes, once you know why the attempted assignation is committed you should be able to work out the culprit, now who the fuck have you upset this time?"
David felt a chill run down his spine, who did Carol think she was, miss Marple maybe?
He shuffled uncomfortably in his seat "Carol i honestly haven't upset anyone" he muttered, his heart pumping blood through his arteries faster than a whippet on speed.
"oh I'm going out, just clear this lot up" Carol grabbed her bag and associated bits and bobs before leaving.
"Carol no wait! There's someone out there watching us!" yelled David, but it was to late, she had already vacated the house.
"well it's me they want not her" he grumbled "oh and thanks for your help" muttered David, he had recently got into the habit of talking to himself, at least he got answers this way, he went to grab a dust pan and brush then began the task of cleaning up the mess from the smashed window.
"watch yourself grandad, wouldn't want to hurt yourself would you"
David stopped what he was doing and adjusted his position to face the direction of the voice "what was that Liam? How about helping me?" he wasn't in the mood for his grandsons wise cracks.
"Remember that day in the gardens when you were lay there dying, Grans wedding day, i should have left you to die" spat Liam aggressively, David moved himself to the sofa confused, the words just spoken made his body clench with fear and uncertainty, he could tell Liam meant every word, there was nothing in his voice but aggression, pain, hurt but most of all regret.
Slowly things were beginning to slip into place, the look on Liams face told the whole story, as ridiculous as it sounded David had a very bad feeling about what was to come.
"My wedding day, mine and Carols wedding day" David chocked, he could hardly speak, his heart was racing, his hands shaking violently with a combination of fear and anger.
"I never liked you" confessed Liam propping himself up against the mini bar "that day I came to tell you about Gran wanting to move, it was all part of the plan, I knew that if we moved you wouldn't follow, how could I possibly shoot you then? I had to make sure you made Gran change her mind"
David sat shaking his head, he couldn't process this information, was it a sick joke?
"you've done nothing but hurt Gran, you know she loves you yet you still keep hurting her" Liam continued.
"But I love her, and you know she loves me why would you want to put her through that! Have you any idea what she's been through this past year!" cried David bolting to his feet.
"Yes of course I know because I've been here, you didn't even call to see how she was"
David couldn't deny this, what Liam was saying was a hundred percent fact, he took a deep breath in an attempt to slow his heart rate down.
"she would get over it, like she has all the other times" snarled Liam, a cold evil smile spread across his face "only difference would be she wouldn't have to see you again"
Liam stepped forward reaching into the back of his trousers and producing the offensive weapon "at close rage it shouldn't be hard to hit you where it hurts" he said with a snigger.
"Liam please just get out me way, il pack me stuff and leave, you won't see or hear from me again" Davids voice was shaking, he had never been so afraid in his whole life, come to think of it he had never been this close to a deadly weapon before, he hoped this was the closest he would ever get.
His grandson grinned and shook his head "what and allow you to walk off into the sunset? To live out the rest of your life in peace and harmony? To wait a few years till I'm out of the way at university, living with my girlfriend maybe, So you can return and fuck her life up again! I think not!"
"what the fuck is wrong with you!" cried David lunging at him, but unfortunately for him, Liam was to quick, he managed to step out of David's way causing him to fall into the mini bar at such force, he stretched his hand out to try and break his fall, breaking a wine glass, the glass shattered, the sharp remains burying themselves into the palm of his hand.
"Your getting old grandad, not as quick as you use to be are you?"
David turned to face him, tears rolling down his cheeks, he glanced down at his throbbing hand.
"pathetic" spat Liam.
David winced and took a hanky from his inside pocket, wrapping it around his hand tightly, this seemed to force the tiny specs of glass further into his hand.
"Liam, just out of interest, how the hell did you manage to get hold of a gun?" he questioned, his eyes narrowed.
Liam shrugged, clearly he was in two minds whether to tell his grandad, but after a few minutes of pondering the idea he knew by telling him it would show that he wasn't as stupid as people thought he was, plus he was very much enjoying the element of control he now had over his grandad.
"I got it from Vincent" he said proudly.
"who the bloody hell is Vincent?" blurted David confused.
Liam chuckled and plonked himself on the sofa "some guy that's shagging kym" he informed.
"Your off your rocker" replied David pouring himself a whisky "if you wanted to kill me then why didn't you?"
Liam stood up, he wasn't quite prepared for this question "my aim isn't very good" he mumbled "I like to identify problems, collect data and find a solution"
David screwed his face up, what was wrong with this kid? How could someone be so normal one day then turn into some sort of Psycho Killer the next, he had always put the boys attitude and little outbursts down to his age, his need to be a teenager and rebel against authority.
Liam stood waving the weapon around as he spoke, David had never seen this side to him before, he knew he had been a little shit in the past getting involved with gangs and what not, but this was madness, he had plotted to kill his own grandad, possibly not a crime to the creative angry mind of a teenage boy, but actually carrying it out was unreal, thank God Liam hadn't had any target practice.
"so what now?"
Liam shuffled his weight from one foot to the other "I was very careful you know, even went to a different market to buy my clothes, there's not many stores you can walk into these days without getting your picture on CCTV" he proudly announced completely ignoring David's question "now sit on the sofa, and get your hands up" he continued waving the gun towards the sofa.
"would you stop waving that thing around, someone's going to get hurt!" David was beginning to lose his patients, the almost paralysing fear he felt a few minutes ago was starting to fade, he had to somehow get of here, he knew he couldn't make a dash for the door, he didn't know whether that gun was loaded or not, there was no telling what Liam was capable of, so for now he would do what he was told.
"to right someone is going to get hurt grandad in fact someone is going to get very seriously hurt" wailed Liam slamming the living room door.
David could see he was starting to crack, his little gangsta act was wearing thin, which wasn't good, what if the boy completely loses it and starts firing that thing?
He observed Liam pacing back and forth "you've got to clean up, cut out the infection" he turned to face David "Your a very big infection! You should be six feet under by now" he screamed his hands shaking.
David didn't have a clue exactly what he had done to upset Liam so much, but he decided against asking questions, there was no telling what was going through that demented warped mind of his at the moment.
"please put that gun down" David pleaded, he didn't care how pathetic or desperate he sounded tight now "just hand it to me il get rid of it and we can forget all about this"
"you know what grandad, fuck you, I've come this far, to late to turn back now I've got to finish the job"
This was getting more and more confusing by the second, what job? What was he talking about!
"you can't hurt Gran anymore I'm going to look after her" as Liam spoke David could tell this wasn't going to end well, what he couldn't work out was why Liam was dragging it out, he could have shot him at any moment, the bullet would almost certainly be fatal, he would be firing at point blank range.
"I'm back" came Carols voice from the hallway.
"Carol!" cried David "darling don't come in here!"
Carol could hear the concern in his voice and walked through the living room door, she came to a halt as Liam came into view, Liam holding a gun sweating, looking terrified.
"what's going on?" the words fell from her mouth, she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
David stood with his hands up, at least if he kept his hands where Liam could see them he might think he's still in full control of the situation.
"Carol, it was him, it was him that shot me"
"one more fucking word out of you and your brains will be decorating the walls!" snarled Liam.
"Liam darling, stop being silly, put that gun down and come and talk to me in the kitchen" suggested carol, her calming voice echoing around the room.
Liam was starting to soften, he lowered the gun, aiming it at the floor.
"that's it darling, now just drop it and we can talk about this"
David couldn't hold back, now Liam was considerably calm he had to take his chance, without delay he dived forwards grabbing Liam from behind "David no!" Carol screamed jumping forward leaching onto Liams arm, she tried to shake the gun from his hand, the three of them scrambled about until the heart stopping sound of a landmine exploding hit their ears.
One of them fell to the floor, blood splattered over the walls and surrounding bits of furniture, the victim of the stray bullet was killed instantly, the remaining two stood, their bodies going into shock, this minute was frozen in time, nothing would ever be the same again...
Well there we go people, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get slaughtered for this final, who died? Only you guys can answer that! ;)
