Chapter Eleven
BPOV
"Hey?" Jasper's voice shocked me from my thoughts as I scooted across the log I had perched myself on for the last hour. The sun was just beginning to rise and the rays were crashing through the little bit of clouds that were around. "You okay Bells?"
"Yeah," I whispered when he wrapped and arm around me pulling me closer. "Just thinking."
"About Alice?"
"Among things," the truth was she was part of it, but my thoughts went to Carlina. "Carlina mostly."
"She was a firecracker wasn't she?" Unable to hide the laughter we both lost it. "When she introduced Emmett at the pier as the Teddy Bear and those gay guys started to crack onto him."
"I was mad at her at first," I admitted, isn't that the way the story goes? Boy cheats and it's automatically girl vs girl?
"You weren't doing a very good job at hating someone," Jasper smirked. "You invited her to every social gathering we were having that summer."
"I didn't know she was with Zack when I met her," I whispered, "I wish I had though it would have made everything so much easier."
"You and Edward wouldn't have had as much fun being secretive if you knew."
"Maybe Carlina might still be alive if everything had been out in the open from the get go."
"Bells," Jasper brushed my hair over my shoulder as his gaze met mine. "You need to stop blaming yourself."
"I'm not blaming myself," I wasn't sure who I was trying to convince more, myself or him. "You're right." I gave up the moment his mouth turned into a smirk; he always knew when I was lying. "Zack blames me, and he wants revenge."
"Zack's a jerk Bella," Jasper said honestly, "he won't get anywhere near you."
"You know we had the whole thing planned?" I confessed. "We were going to go to the same college, on graduation he was going to ask me to marry him and then we were going to have kids, the whole nine yards you know."
"You, sound, so weird right now."
"Would it be even weirder if I said I'm glad that he cheated?"
"Just a little, but I'd be crazy if I said that the change Edward has brought out in you wasn't for the best, Zack was bringing you down."
"He wasn-"
"Yes he was Bella," Jasper pulled away from me, the sun finally rising into the sky with the sound of the waves crashing against the shore infront of us. "You were always so serious, you were guarded, and you were different. But now, Edward brings out the real you. You smile more and you just radiate happiness."
"Don't get all mushy on me Jazz," Rolling my eyes I pouted. "You're starting to sound like Rose when she has her period."
"I'll vouch for that," Emmett's voice boomed from behind us, turning around I saw Emmett standing shirtless in a pair of shorts Edward standing beside him in the same pair of pants he'd fallen asleep in, his sleeveless shirt showing all the muscles in his arms while he held a blanket in his hands. In seconds they each took a seat beside us with the conversation with Jazz changed to plans for the day.
Edward placed a kiss on my temple and I found myself smiling when he handed me my phone, it was good to not have to worry about hiding our relationship. "Morning."
"Where's Alice?" I asked softly.
"Still sleeping, she and Rose were the last to go to sleep." Emmett answered quickly, "what are the plans for today?"
"Nothing at all," I said quickly before getting serious.
"I'm going to get a beer does anybody else want one?" Emmett asked.
"How did you get Charlie to give let you even get that beer in the truck?" Jasper teased with a knowing smile obviously trying to get a reaction out of me. Emmett got his feet with a smile on his face and tapped his nose.
"Let's get this party started!" Emmett was at the esky by the tents in seconds grabbing a six pack.
We got back to Forks just before the sun was setting, Charlie had called on our way back, Zack hadn't been spotted anywhere near town. While it wasn't the best news it also wasn't the worst we could have. Edward's over protective behaviour was not so secret anymore when we pulled into his driveway. He was at my side before I got out of the car opening my door for me.
"I got a message from Sam he needs me at the diner, Bree called in sick," Alice looked at me apologetically as I stepped out the car. Turning around she said her goodbyes to Jasper taking her bag from him and walking into her house.
We walked back to my place, the last two days a blur of fun at the beach, gossiping and doing things normal teenagers would be doing a nice refresher but getting back to the reality was a little hard to take in. Edward was taking everyone back to the airport while I got dinner ready for Charlie.
"Do you have everything?" I asked Rosalie in the kitchen while she finished zipping her bag.
She nodded, "we'll keep an eye on him the moment we get back."
"But what if-" she held her hand up telling me in silence to shut up.
"Enough of that As much as I hate to admit it," Rose rolled her eyes at Edward who had joined us in the kitchen with Emmett and Jasper following with their bags. "Edward will make sure you are safe here, and we will take care of things back home."
"It still concerns me that Charlie said with all his contacts that he was nowhere to be found," Emmett said seriously.
"Especially since my Dad said he has definitely not been in town this weekend," Jasper added. "I don't like the fact no one told Alice about him on his way to Forks."
"She doesn't need to know," Edward interjected. "It's none of her concern." Jaspers glare towards Edward didn't go unnoticed but no one said anything.
Zack was still a sensitive topic for me at the moment; I didn't want him anywhere near Forks. "You better go; you don't want to miss your flight"
Rosalie pulled me into a tight hug and I cursed myself silently at the thought of my friends going back home and how much I selfishly wanted them to stay. "I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too Bells," Rosalie smiled down at me before pulling away allowing Emmett to sweep me into his arms like a ragdoll.
"Oh Bells," Emmett's voice boomed spinning me around, now I was regretting agreeing that Edward would drop them off at the airport. "Be careful."
"I will you oaf," my fist made contact with his arm when he put me down and I pushed him away turning to Jasper. "Play nice Jazz."
"I'll try but I can't promise anything," Jasper pulled me into his arms as well. "We'll get him, one way or another."
A small smile pulled on my face at the comfort of his words when he let me go, Edward reached for my hand bringing it to his lips.
"I'll be back soon," he whispered to me, his words just as comforting as Jaspers.
"I'll be fine," I didn't know who my words were assuring more them or myself. I remained on the veranda watching as they put their things in the car before pulling out the driveway.
The next morning flew by in a blur, Rose text me after she arrived back in Phoenix and sent me a picture message of her and my mother along with a reminder that I needed to take a few weeks out of vacation and come back to Phoenix for a bit.
Just like usual Edward drove us to work despite me having the red truck Charlie had bought for me. Charlie had been surprised when I thanked him, but the truth was it was a great car and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it but Edward wasn't giving much leeway with the whole Zack incident.
"Jazz text me," Alice said casually from my side as we finally reached the cafeteria. We each grabbed a tray and joined the line that had formed. "Are you okay with that?" Shit, she'd noticed the look on my face. Cursing myself for being an open book I shrugged. It wasn't that I wasn't okay with it, jealous I guess since he hadn't messaged me either.
"Yeah, why would it bother me?" I tried to be calm but I had a feeling it wasn't working when she asked if I was sure. "Have you seen Angela?" I asked hoping she would ignore the fact I didn't directly answer her question.
"Don't think I won't continue this conversation with you later," Alice spoke and I knew she was serious. "Ang is watching practice."
"Oh right," I whispered, "we should probably go watch that to yeah?"
"We don't have to, Edward won't mind," Alice smirked reaching her hand for the ladle and scooping a portion of macaroni and cheese. "Fucking Mac and cheese again."
"Alice!" I shushed her quickly earning a glare from the lunch lady on the other side of the counter. I grabbed my tray pushing it to the side and moving to the end of the line grabbing three sandwiches and throwing a ten on the counter.
"Bella!" Alice called racing to my side, "what's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just don't want to eat in the cafeteria, let's go to the bleachers and keep Ang company."
Alice didn't say anything instead taking one of the sandwiches I offered her and following me to the bleachers. Angela was leaning on the railing overlooking the football field where the senior and their new recruits were running laps. Alice took the other one from me and raced towards the team on the field.
"Alice! Bella!" Angela waved getting our attention. I took a seat on the bleacher behind where she was standing starting to unwrap my sandwich. "How was La Push?"
"Good, it was a nice chance for Alice to get to know my friends from Phoenix."
"Alice knows?" Angela asked raising a brow, I didn't have to answer her question as we both looked at the field and saw Alice hand Edward the extra sandwich she had taken from me, both looking over to us with a wave. "I'll take that as a yes then."
"Yeah."
"She took it well?"
"Better than expected actually," I admitted. "I didn't like lying to her."
"She just wasn't that observant," Angela pointed out and we both shared a laugh.
"I heard that," Alice's voice shouted from the field as she turned around and started to run back to the bleachers.
"That time anyway," Angela laughed, Alice took her seat beside us and I was focused on the field watching Edward take control of the team coaching his team mates into the right form. I could tell that he wasn't as focused on the training as he usually would be. Angela was great though, she didn't let me dwell too much even though she didn't know anything of what had gone on previously. "I'll see you tonight at the diner by the way, it's family night."
It was hard to hold the laughter back as she rolled her eyes and put down her hands from doing air quotes at 'family night'.
"Oh great, familiar faces while I lose my coordination."
"Hey Sam," I greeted walking into the small diner with my
apron in my hands, the rest of the school day had gone fairly fast and I even had enough time before my shift started to prepare most of Charlie's dinner. Admittedly I had to leave him strict instruction for putting the lasagne in the oven, but I knew he was capable of that at least.
Alice waved quickly as she moved behind the counter turning around and pushing through the door while she held some dirty plates.
"Hey Bella," Sam said with a smile. "Good weekend?"00
"Not long enough really," I laughed.
"Never really are when you want them to be, you'll be working the bar tonight."
"Okay," I answered with confidence. The bar was the one thing I felt extremely comfortable with; I would serve the customers that said along the bar but was also responsible for getting all the drinks for the other girls. I took the apron in my hands and put it on tying it up around my waist tightly.
Two hours into the shift and everything started to peak, it was getting busy for the night and everyone was run off their feet when I noticed one of the soft drinks I was pouring ran out of syrup.
"Hey Sam," I called across the bar to where he stood by the kitchen checking the plates of food before they went out. "I'm just going to change the post mix."
Sam waved me off pointing to the door leading the kitchen, making my way in I hurried past the cooks who were off in their own little world before I found the back area with all the post mix lined up shelves. Finding the empty box I twisted it off the tube throwing the box to the ground.
The storage of the fresh boxes was at waist height when I found the syrup I was after.I struggled to pick up the carton of syrup at first before getting down and using my legs to push me up as much as possible while holding the fifteen kilo box of soft drink syrup. Raising my arms up I managed to slip it onto the shelf above others, it took only a few moments to grab the pipe and flip open the box for the connector to connect the pipe in.
Within seconds the sound of the post mix pumping through was heard and I knew I had connected it properly, leaving the store room I saw orders lining up on the counter with a bell sounding to signal the line was full. Knowing I would be needed at the bar I raced to the front of the diner pushing myself through the door.
"Bella, run!" I heard Alice shout out drawing my attention to her, she was in her side of the diner; it was then I noticed the guests were all on the floor. My eyes met her as she stood against one of edges of a booth.
That was when I felt it, the warm breath on my neck, the touch on waist as it went up to my bra before trailing down my middle.
Fuck…he found me.
