Maya took a seat at her favorite booth, and looked at the menu she memorized since the age of eight. Shawn looked around the place, and scanned the menu. As Katy went to the back and went to go change and begin working.
"So any recommendations?" Shawn asked.
"Tuna fish melt" Maya replied automatically. "It's amazing. Somehow, when mom makes it, it is even better"
The waiter who was taking care of them, was not Katy, much to Shawn's disappointment. It was Mrs. Z. Someone who was very kind to Maya, and always use to sneak her desserts to eat while waiting for her mother to finish her shift. Mrs. Z always insisted on Maya calling her by her first name, but Maya thought Mrs. showed respect. Maya very much respected Mrs. Z. When Katy first started, Mrs. Z helped her learn the ways of the diner. Also, when Katy was busy, and her father was at work Mrs. Z always took care of Maya when she was younger.
"Hey sweetpea" Mrs. Z greeted, when she saw Maya.
Maya smiled, she hadn't really been in the diner recently. She never realized how much she missed her. "Hi Mrs. Z"
"I'm guessing it will be the usual, right?" She said, as she wrote it down on the little notepad.
"Actually two of them" Maya replied. She motioned to Shawn. He waved. "Hello Mrs. Z"
"Hello there, you fine young man. What's your name?"
"Shawn Hunter" He greeted with a polite smile.
"So you're the Shawn Hunter I keep on hearing about" Mrs. Z said. Katy, who was waiting on other table, blushed.
"Are you and Katy a thing?" She asked. " You know I've been telling her it's okay to move on and-
"Mrs. Z!" Katy called. "Need your help" Which, she didn't really. She could carry the tray of food. But she wanted to get Mrs. Z's attention, without it being more awkward then it was.
"So.." Shawn said, trying to say something. He had no idea how to feel. Sure, he liked Katy. But she had been through a very rough marriage. He felt like she wasn't ready, and if he could admit it to himself, neither was he. To put himself out there, was something he didn't feel comfortable doing.
"Riley tells me you are good at art" He says, hoping the topic will take off from there.
"I'm decent" She admits with a shrug. She never took herself seriously as an artist. All she had drawn lately was red slashes and shades of red decorated her sketchbook. She had nothing to discuss. But there was something she was curious about.
"What do you do?" She asked.
"I work for a website called Hit The Road. com. I take the pictures" He informs.
"You're the photographer?" She asked in slight awe. She loved going on the site, she also loved looking at the pictures taken from all over the country. She use to be inspired by them, and tried to replicate them by drawing and painting them. She even gave one of those pictures to Riley as a birthday present.
"You took that picture of the sunset in the city, didn't you?" She asked, it was her favorite picture. She loved that he showed the naturally beautiful side of the city. Since it is mostly flashy bright lights.
He nodded, yes. "You go on the site a lot?" He asked, concerned.
"Not as much as I use to. But since I'm on this whole honest streak, when my arguing between my parents got really bad, I use to go on the site. I wanted to find a place to run away too" She said.
"Would you still run away?" He asked, curious. Worry was in his voice as well, which threw Maya off. Why would he be worried?
"I can do worst things then run away" She stated, while it was meant to be a joke. Her voice came out harsh. It was a reality check. To remember the reason why he came to town in the first place.
"Your pictures are amazing" She said, to cover up her slip up. " Are you taking pictures while you are here?" She desperately wanted to change the subject.
"Well since this wasn't a planned vacation. I wasn't assigned anything. But I might take some for fun" He said.
"Two tuna fish melt" Mrs. Z said as she gave them their food.
"Thanks Mrs. Z" Maya said.
"No problem, baby" She replied. " I made sure your mom made em for you both" She winked.
"Enjoy" She said as she walked away to go take more orders.
Shawn and Maya ate their food, and continued their lighthearted conversation. Katy watched with a smile. Good to know that Shawn was making Maya smile and laugh. It was good to see her daughter happy. Katy knew this isn't what Shawn planned, but in a way this was better. Even if she didn't get to spend time with her daughter, she could see what their life could be like. If Shawn was ever to become a bigger influence in her life.
Once they finished, Maya went up to hug her mom, while she was cleaning the table. "Bye mom, love you"
"Bye baby girl"
While Maya said her goodbye, Shawn left a twenty dollar tip, and drew a smiley face on the check.
"Bye Katy" He called. "Nice meeting you Mrs. Z"
With that, Maya and Shawn left the diner.
Mrs. Z turned to Katy. " He is good with Maya. Handsome as well. Come to think of it, Katy Hunter sounds quiet adorable. Plus you wouldn't have to change your initials"
Katy rolled her eyes, and went to go set up the table she just cleaned, blushing along the way.
Riley sighed happily as she held hands with Lucas. He was walking her home, after their amazingly fairy tale, everything she could ever want and more, first date.
She had a magic carpet blanket draped over her shoulders. A gift he bought her, after the first half of the play. He had noticed she was a little cold in the theatre, and bought it to keep her warm. She snuggled with him through out the whole second half of the play.
When they got to her door, she turned to him and said. "Thanks for the magical night"
"Anything for my princess" He said. Then they kissed, it was the perfect ending for the perfect night. Riley knew this wasn't their first kiss, but it felt more magical. More special.
"Mr. Frair!" Riley quickly pulled away at the sound of her dad's voice. Riley felt herself, being pushed behind her father. Cory being a wall between the two.
"Goodnight Mr. Frair" Cory said. "Get home safely"
"Before I go, I need to give a gift to Riley" Lucas said.
He reached into the bag he originally had the blanket in, and pulled out a magic lamp.
It was a nightlight, but it was shaped like the magic lamp in the show. Riley was admiring it, in the shop.
"Lucas..." Her voice trailed off, so touched he bought it for her.
"Thank you" Riley said, genuinely touched by the fact he bought her this, without her knowing.
"To remember this magical night" He said, as he passed it to her.
"Enough now Romeo" Cory said.
"Is Riley back? I wanna talk to her boyfriend" Shawn said from inside the house.
"Oh no" Riley said under her breath. She looked at Lucas. "If you like your life, you'd go" She warned.
"Bye, Riley. Have a lovely night" He said, as he walked away, leaving Riley awe-struck.
Maya walked to Riley. "Leave her alone Mr. Matthews" She pulled Riley away, and led her to the living room.
"Tell me everything" Maya demanded.
"Oh me too!" Topanga said, as she sat on the couch near the girls. "Did he respect you? What did you guys do?"
Auggie runs out. "Ohhh smiley Riley is back" He went to go sit on her lap. "How was your date with Lucas?"
While everyone else questioned Riley about her date, Cory went to go sit down next to Shawn. Who was in the kitchen, eating grapes.
"Can you believe it Shawnie?" Cory asked, taking a grape from Shawn. " It's her first date. They kissed. My little girl just had her first date, and they kissed"
"She is just to young" He declared.
"To young?" Shawn laughed. " You and Topanga were practically married at her age"
"It's different" Cory argued stubbornly. "Topanga and I knew we were meant to be together forever and ever"
"Well, maybe it is the same for Riley and this Lucas kid" Shawn said. "Then maybe it is not. This could be her first boyfriend of many or first boyfriend forever. As long as she is treated right and happy"
"You're a good uncle Shawn" Cory stated. "You are going to be a good father one day"
Shawn looked at Maya and sighed. " Yeah, I hope so"
"Don't go thinking that is going to stop me from wanting to interrogate the boy" He said, looking at Cory. " You may have dealt with him, doesn't mean he get's my approval to date my niece. After all she deserves to be protected"
"Yeah, so does" Cory agreed. "So how'd it go with Maya and Katy?" He asked curious. "Are they okay?"
When Katy almost compared Maya to her father, Cory wanted nothing more but have that moment not happen. He saw the hurt on Maya's face and wish he could turn back time. She had already been through so much, and hearing that didn't help anything. He hoped they had worked it out between them.
"It took some time and convincing. But they are okay. Not perfect. But okay" Shawn answered honestly. "They've been hurt so many times. I don't think they fully trust each other"
"I'm just happy she is okay" Cory said. " She's been doing well. That whole therapy thing, threw her off. Maybe it isn't the right thing" He admitted.
"She agreed to do it" Shawn informed. "Under one condition"
"Riley is going with her, isn't she?" Cory asked, even if he knew the answered.
Shawn nodded. They looked at both the girls. They were laughing. Both of them looked happy.
"They're us" Cory said.
"They're us" Shawn echoed
a/n: Thank you so much for reading, I hope you enjoyed. There is two songs that inspired this chapter. The first one is for the relationship between Cory and Riley and how protective he is of his little girl. It is the song," I loved her first" by Heartland. The other song is called "You should know where I'm coming from" by Banks. It is a really great song, that I think that describes Maya and how she feels like people should understand and not judge. Ofcourse I don't own any songs, or the GMW.
Also, I hope Shawn is in character. I haven't seen many episodes of Boy Meets World, so I feel free to tell me if he is out of character.
Have a lovely day
