Chapter Ten
Emily heard a loud banging on the door. She sighed and covered her head with her blanket and went back to sleep. A few moments later, her cellphone started to ring. She opened her eyes lazily. Damn it! Who is it at… 6 am? She wondered, glancing at her bedside clock. Whoever it was, it could wait. This was supposed to be her day off anyway. And fuck! My head hurts…
She turned herself on the bed and looked at the blonde she had met at the bar, still sleeping. What was her name? When her cellphone had gone quiet and she was about to go back to sleep, the banging started again, but this time there was a loud voice screaming on the other side.
"Damn it, Prentiss! I know you're in there! Open up"
Morgan?
She got up and put on her robe. She quickly checked her cell phone and saw that there were 17 missed calls and 15 voicemails. Fuck.
She walked down the stairs still a little dizzy and opened the door.
"What the fuck, Morgan?"
"What the hell were you doing you couldn't answer your fucking damn phone? We've been trying to contact you for oven one fucking hour, Prentiss!"
His tone startled her.
"Hey! Chill out, man! What's the deal?"
This somehow seemed to anger him even more.
"Chill out? Don't you fuck tell me to chill out! We were supposed to be flying right now, but instead I am at your doorstep because you got too fucking drunk to answer your damn phone! I can smell alcohol from here, Emily!"
She was speechless. He had never talked to her like that.
"Morgan… what's the problem?"
He was about to shout at her again when it dawned on him. She had no idea. He took some deep breaths to calm himself.
"Em… have you checked your phone?"
In a second her demeanor changed. She went from angry to confused, and then worried.
"No, Morgan, I've just woken up. What is going on, Derek? I'm worried"
"Emily…" he took a deep breath. He knew how much she was hurting from all of this.
"It's JJ"
Emily was sitting alone by the window inside the jet. As soon as Morgan told her this was about JJ, she got ready quickly and left only a note to the woman that shared her bed. If I hadn't gone to that pub, if I hadn't drank that much… we could have been there already. If I had just picked up the damn phone…
Her thoughts were interrupted when Hotch spoke. Everyone was in the jet, including Garcia.
"I've just got off the phone with Officer Perry; he's the lead detective in this case. This night they received a 911 call saying that a fight had happened in one property and that there was blood on the floor. When they got there, the house was a mess. The witness, Luke Waltz, was the one who told the police that the victim was JJ. Later, this was confirmed through fingerprint and they have just received the DNA analysis of the blood on the floor. It is JJ's." He stopped for a moment and watched his team. Penelope had tears in her eyes, she seemed relieved to know that her friend was alive, but worried because she was obviously injured; Rossi was waiting for him to continue and Morgan was standing, unable to stay still. Reid was apparently thinking about the facts and Emily… she was just staring out the window. He didn't even know if she was listening to him. Sighing, he continued.
"JJ was there, in this house, for the last 9 and half months."
Morgan interrupted angrily.
"And how the hell we missed this? She's been in one place this whole time and we didn't find her?"
Hotch cleared his throat.
"There's one more thing. They found another set of fingerprints in the scene. It belonged to a Madalin Davis"
They all stood in silence, shocked with this information. It was Garcia who asked the question that they were too afraid to ask.
"H-how? Didn't you say that whoever did this was a man?"
There was an awkward silence after her question. Then, a loud chuckle was heard and everyone looked at Emily, who was still staring out the window.
"Our profile was wrong. That's why JJ was abducted and why she's been missing all these months. Because we didn't do our jobs properly"
They were all stunned and feeling guilty at this point. Hotch swallowed the lump in his throat and gave his final orders.
"We're about to land. The police made sure the witness will be ready for us. Once we get there, Morgan and Reid, go to the scene and see what you can find. Garcia, you set your computers and search everything you can about Madalin Davis, I want more than what they have right now. Rossi, you talk to the police officers, see what they have so far and Emily, you're with me. We're gonna talk to Luke"
The rest of the journey was spent in silence. No one was in the mood for talking.
The team landed in Seattle and two officers were waiting for them with two SUV's. One of the officers was Perry.
"Hello! You must be the BAU team. I am Officer Perry and this is Officer Ruiz. We came here to wait for you because we're gonna have to drive to Edmonds and from there take the ferry to get to Kingston."
Officer Perry reached his hand to Hotch.
"Hello. I am Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner and these are SSA's Prentiss, Morgan, Rossi, Dr. Spencer Reid and our Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia"
Officer Perry greeted them and continued.
"It's nice to meet you, although it's under this unfortunate circumstances"
Hotch nodded.
"We don't have time to waste, let's go"
The team split up between the two SUV's and continued their way to Kingston.
When the team arrived, they all split up and started to do their tasks. When Hotch and Emily entered the room Luke was in, they were all surprised to see how young he was. Hotch shook his hand and took the lead.
"Mr Luke Waltz, I'm SSA Hotchner, this is SSA Prentiss, and we're here to talk about what happened this night."
Luke seemed exhausted, but was eager to help. He took a deep breath and ran his hand through his hair.
"What do you wanna know?"
"Everything" Emily answered, holding a pen and a paper, ready to take notes when needed.
Reid was staring at the empty bedroom, the bed still messy; a sign that people lived there for a while. Two people lived there. JJ and someone else. JJ and her captor. JJ was here all these months and now that we are here, she's not.
"Are you okay, kid?"
Morgan's voice took him out of his stupor.
"Yes. Yes, I'm fine." He looked around for another second. "JJ was missing for almost ten months, and she is still alive. Do you know the chances of that, Morgan?" he didn't wait for an answer. "When an unsub keeps a victim for so long, is usually one out of two things: either he keeps the victim as long as he can in order to torture and inflict pain…" he stopped, waiting for Morgan to complete his line of thought
"Which is clearly not the case here. In the closet, there are clothes with two different sizes. There is enough food for the whole month, there are medicines in the bathroom, evidences of two people sleeping in here… hell, there is not a secret room; there is not one single evidence that JJ was being held against her will." Morgan stated angrily.
"Exactly! So, the only possibility left is that the unsub used JJ for a purpose. She's a surrogate" Reid concluded.
Morgan, then, frowned.
"How she managed to control JJ for so long?"
Reid sighed.
"Could be drugs. Or some sort of conditioning…"
They stood in silence for a couple of minutes, taking in everything they could. It was Morgan who spoke first.
"JJ was definitely being held by a woman. There isn't evidence of a man being here." Then, he punched the wall next to him. "Fuck man! Our profile was wrong! We were wrong since the beginning! JJ never had a chance; we were looking at the wrong direction…"
"There was so much violence on the way those women were murdered, Morgan… I mean, they died with a single shot to the head, but prior to that, there was so much violence… women don't usually kill like that"
Morgan laughed bitterly.
"Whether she did that on purpose to deceive the authorities or not, it doesn't make any of this more acceptable. We still failed to do our jobs"
At the precinct, Hotch and Emily were almost finishing with Luke.
"So, how did you find out that Kate was actually Jennifer Jareau?" Hotch asked.
"When I read the file that my mother gave me, there was a lot of information on Madalin Davis. Including that she was married once, to a woman named Katherin. But there was one thing that didn't match: this Katherin, Madalin's wife, died 18 months ago."
"Then you realized that Kate wasn't actually Kate, and started digging through missing people; that makes sense…" Emily let a small groan of frustration.
"She can be anywhere right now, Hotch. She may even be at the hands of this Madalin, for all we know…"
At her words, Luke suddenly perked up.
"No, she's not! Look, I received this at night, but I only saw it a few hours ago. This day has been a mess!" he said, handing them his cellphone.
Emily picked up his cellphone and read a text message. It said:
I know that you probably know what happened by now. I'm fine, don't worry. I'm gonna find her. Thanks for everything. I'll keep in touch.
Emily's heart was beating fast inside her chest.
"Who is her? Where is she going?"
Luke looked from one agent to the other.
"She told me yesterday, before all this happened, that she remembered someone from her past, a woman named Emily. She is definitely going to look for her"
Suddenly, Emily felt everything around her spinning and the room seemed much smaller. She barely noticed Hotch picking up his phone and dialing Garcia.
An hour later, Hotch and Emily were shaking hands with some friendly couple. As soon as they found out what JJ might be doing, Hotch called Garcia and asked her to track down the number JJ used to text Luke. She discovered that the cellphone belonged to an Ana Morris, a nurse married to a guy named Tim Morris and mother to a seven year-old boy.
"Thank you so much for your cooperation. What can you tell me about this woman?" Hotch asked, showing a picture of JJ. "We know you were somehow in contact this night"
It was the woman, Ana, that answered.
"We were just coming back from a restaurant when we found her on the street, limping. It looked like she was running from someone. When we stopped the car, she was bleeding. We then offered help and she said she was running from her boyfriend. Is she alright?" the woman asked, concern written on her face.
Hotch cleaned his throat.
"Madam, she is a federal agent. She's been missing for almost ten months. Can you tell me where she is now?"
The couple glanced at each other.
"Oh…" the man simply said.
"Is there a problem, sir?" Emily asked.
"You see… we didn't know about this. We went to Edmonds so we could take her to a hospital, but she refused, she had no money at all. My wife had a first aid kit here in the car and bandaged her head. She had absolutely no money sir… so we helped her get a bus to DC. She left at 4am this morning."
Heeeey, do you guys think that Paget is coming back? That would be so awesome!
