An Ex-Almost
People said they were a tragic love story. One of those Greek tragedies they like to make kids read in school over and over again. They were like Odysseys and Penelope. Reyna would scoff at the comparison. She wasn't some dutiful wife who idly sat at home, fending off suitors, waiting for her husband to return home. Jason wasn't a faithful husband. Yes, he's strong, courageous and brave, always the hero but he wasn't hers. Reyna had no claim over the blond. How can they be a love story if nothing happened between them? And why does it still hurt even after one year?
The click of the camera shutter pulled Reyna out of her dark thoughts. She looked up to see Parker sitting across from her. His elbows were on the counter, stabling his camera as he gazed through the view port. Reyna glared at him over the water-filled sink, hands washing the dirty dishes. "What? It's such a domestic scene." He replied, lowering his camera and gave her a sincere smile before it curled down. "It doesn't match the somber expression. What's up?"
"Nothing." Reyna replied instinctively, pulling her hands out of the water and brushed a strand away from her face with the back of her palm.
"Lie." Parker called out, setting his camera down and fully met her gaze. She hated how easily he could see through her, read her tells. It's a strange talent of his. Probably something he picked up from seeing the world through a camera lens. "You're thinking about him again." Reyna forced her eyes to meet his, refusing to waver and revealing he's right. "You get this distant look when you're deep in thought but it gets extra dark when you think about J-"
"Don't." Reyna cut him off, surprising the mortal augur. She stepped away from the sink until her back bumped the counter behind her. She braced her hands against the edge, digging her nails into the granite. "Don't say his name."
"What were you two?" Parker asked, pushing his stool back as he tried to approach her. Reyna shook her head, stopping him. "I've seen the way he looks at you. How he glares at me when I'm close. There's conflict in his eyes like he's struggling to come to terms with something. Reyna…"
"We didn't date." Reyna started, hearing how her voice echoed in the room as she stared at the soapy water. The suds swirled as the drain slowly consumed them. "Technically, he's not an ex-boyfriend." Titles felt silly especially with Jason. He was more than a title. Reyna closed her eyes, remembering how his eyes lit up when he saw her. The way his hands reached out to touch her arm or back. How easy they could talk about anything and laugh about everything. Reyna's heart clenched at the look in his eyes when she and Parker walked away. "But he's an ex-something. An ex-maybe. An ex-almost…"
