Chapter 10: The Scott Siblings
Laura was on her path to her usual lunch spot in the library when she spots her twin talking to another Raven player. She shakes her head and reaches her table before pulling out her things and setting them up. She couldn't wait for James to done his shift at the cafe, so she could talk to him about the odd day she was having.
It all started with a fight between Lucas and Nathan in her English class, which she was called out of to go to the guidance counsellor office. Her entire schedule was changed, which didn't bother her in the slightest since now she was away from Lucas and Nathan. She had Peyton Sawyer trying to buddy up to her, not to mention Nathan and Lucas, but also Haley, Skills, Fergie and Junk were acting like she existed.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a worn copy of Wuthering Heights and slowly began to read. She knew she had a lot of catching up to do in order to be with the rest of her class. She only asked that her teachers gave her three weeks to catch up and not exclude her from any of the previous assignment due to her transfer.
"Aren't we reading Steinback from class," Lucas says as he sits down across from her.
"Didn't you hear," Laura starts sarcastically. "Mom called and had us separated for the remainder of our time here at Tree Hill High."
"What are you talking about?"
"Mr. Kelly reported us to Principal Turner for cheating. My schedule was changed because you cannot do your own work. Now I have six weeks of catch up to do in three weeks."
"That is why you weren't in Trig."
"Yup, Principal Turner, Mom and Uncle Keith have all agreed that we can no longer have classes together."
"That means we both have different assignments."
"Yup, so that means you and your buddies get to go back to doing your own work."
"I've asked you maybe two times this semester for help."
"Bullshit, you've stiles over 100 papers in the last three years. I know when my files have been hacked into. Unlike you, I actually paid attention in computer science."
"You haven't turned me in yet."
"Now I don't have to. Mom and Principal Turner have a reliable witness that I wrote my paper far away from you and my computer."
"Why cause you wrote it high on weed, LSD or both, my dear twin. Lawson is not a reliable witness to anybody."
"Dipshit you do realize that Dr. Seuss wrote all of his books high on LSD and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is written about an Acid trip. Do you have any idea how many great authors have used mind alternating substances to write? I guess you don't actually read the papers you steal."
"You are admitting to it?"
"It doesn't matter what I tell you anyway. You are going to keep on believing what you want to believe."
"What is your problem? Does Lawson have you so messed up that you can't think on your own anymore?"
"You should probably look in the mirror before you make accusations you know shit about."
"What is going on over here," Jakes asks walking over to them.
"And you are," Laura asks sarcastically.
"Jake Jagielski," Jake says looking at her. "Most people can hear your argument at least four stacks over."
"Great," the twins mutter.
"Yeah, I didn't think either of you wanted any more trouble on your plates," Jake says.
Laura shakes her head and goes back to her reading. She hopes the two Raven players will get the hint and screw off.
Jake pulls Lucas towards him. "You okay? From what I could hear that sounded pretty intense."
"I'm two for two today," Lucas says as they walk away.
"That must be Laura," Jake says looking at him. "She just got switched into almost all of my classes."
"Yeah, they wanted to separate the two of us. Our work is just too similar now a days."
"Well that is all you need. Especially since Coach is going to rip you a new one over that fight with Nathan in class today."
"Great," Lucas says as they reach Jake's table, "Coach, my uncle and my mom."
"I hate to say this but maybe you should let your sister be," Jake says sitting down. "She looks kind of down and in the dumps, most of the time when you see her."
"When doesn't she?"
"Let her be Lucas. You have enough to deal with on your own plate. I get that you are worried about her but you have your own plate. She doesn't seem like she wants you all up in her business any way."
"Thanks man," Lucas says before walking away from him.
"Jagielski, have you seen Lucas," Nathan asks walking over to him.
"You just missed him," Jake says. "He was headed over to the computers after getting into with Laura. He might have gone to go see Coach."
Nathan shakes his head. "So much for our plan, he couldn't have waited ten minutes."
"She is in her usual spot," Jakes says packing his bag. "If you are going to go talk to her, try doing it nicely. She already has had one royal argument."
"Thanks," Nathan says walking over to her spot. "Can we talk, I mean if you have minute."
Laura pauses and looks up from her reading before answering sarcastically, "sure, what do you to talk to little old me about?"
"I deserve the attitude and hesitation. I just to apologize, I never realized that I made your life so unbearable."
"So why do you keep doing it. Yeah Tony told us about his conservation with Tim, plus I got a text from James's mom that Uncle Keith and Dan stopped by."
"Peyton made me realize that you are getting this entire backlash and honestly it's not fair to you. Yeah Lucas and I basically hate each other. You on the other hand, I don't know you, we've never crossed paths and yet here I am making your life hell."
"What are we supposed to bond now or something because you opened your mouth? My life was almost perfect."
"That's why you've been cutting and doing drugs?"
"It's called self-medicating, you know when you do what you can to make your life bearable. You do it all the time by playing basketball and partying, I just do it a different way."
"A deadlier way you mean?"
Laura smirks and lifts up the sleeve of her blouse. Nathan can see a group of angry old scars staring back at him but no new fresh cuts of scabs. "I've found less deadly ways to deal with my life. I guess Tony didn't tell you everything."
"What do you mean?
"Call Tony or James yourself, but you shouldn't believe everything you hear. Rumours are nasty things," Laura says packing her things up.
"What does that even mean?"
"Figure it out but I have ten minutes to talk to James before I am late for History, thanks to Lucas," Laura says before leaving the library.
Nathan watches her, confused about everything that is currently going on around him.
