Chapter Eleven
Riza looked at Roy with pained look in her eyes. She understood exactly how Roy felt, so stood up and walked over to him quickly. She took his still trembling hand in hers and clutched it tightly.
"Oh Roy, " she sighed, "I know."
He turned around to look at her, then removed her hand from his gently, so he could embrace her, burying his face into her hair. Riza hugged him back, clinging to him. Roy swallowed, and attempted to speak before his emotions overwhelmed him again, rendering him incapable of speech. She spoke for him instead.
"I always knew you felt that way Roy. Though they might not have realised it, you were always trying to protect them. And I felt that way about them too."
He pulled away from the embrace to look into her eyes, his own wide and almost unbelieving. "You did?"
She smiled and nodded. Roy's eyes filled with love, gazing into the only woman in the world who could make him feel this way. "I love you." he murmured into her ear.
"I love you too."
They stood there for a moment, before locking into a loving embrace. Riza's jaw trembled, trying to hold in the sobs that were threatening to overwhelm her. But there was no way she could stop the tears that flowed down her cheeks, one for every time she had found herself gazing out of window and longing for Edward to come back. There were many tears.
Roy was so close to crying he could see the tears welling up in his eyes blurring his vision. But he kept them back , trying to be strong for the woman he loved. He tightened his grip on her, holding her even closer, and feeling her tears soak into his military uniform. He whispered comforting words into her ear, stroking her hair, in an attempt to calm her.
All of this was interrupted however, even unintentionally, by the teenager lying in the hospital bed that was central to the room. The young man was talking to someone, his voice rising.
"Give him back... you bastard...know you..."
Roy shot a questioning glance at Riza, who had distanced herself from Roy a little bit so that she could be closer to the boy. She looked up at him, with a worried look in her eyes.
"I think he's having a nightmare."
Roy nodded, he was quite familiar with those himself. Meanwhile the boy was thrashing around, caught up in the midst of his dream. Riza lingered at the side of his bed, wondering what to do. The boy was muttering more even now, his entire body shaking. Roy made his way over to Riza and wrapped his arms her shoulders comfortingly. Her hands crept up until they were clutching his arms. He could see that she was in an inner conflict on what do to. All of a sudden the teenager stopped moving, or doing anything at all really. He just lay there. Riza let out a a shaky breath, glad that it seemed to be over. But it wasn't.
He screamed out, thrashing frantically. At first he seemed to be screaming in Amestrian, but then it slowly morphed into a different language. It was quite a rough language, and Roy had never heard it before. The boy's breathing became laboured, each breath catching in his throat. Tears streamed down his face at a frantic pace, seemingly he had a never ending supply of water behind his eyes. He kept on screaming, catching the doctor's attention who was outside. He rushed in, his gaze instantly zeroing in on his patient. Then his eyes snapped onto the other people in the room.
"How did this happen?" He snapped, while checking the boys vitals.
"He was asleep, and I think he had a nightmare. But then it got worse and he ended up like this." Roy said, gesturing helplessly at the still screaming man lying on the bed.
"Mm hm. It looks like he is having some sort of panic attack, but it could lead to a seizure." The doctor said, quickly.
Riza's gaze became even more pained if that was even possible. Roy squeezed her sympathetically.
"I'm sorry but I need to ask you to leave the room." He looked at them apologetically.
Roy nodded in understanding. He took Riza's hand and led her out of the room. They sat in the bleak and nondescript corridor for what felt like years. They didn't talk both of them lost in their own thoughts. The hard plastic chairs were obviously not designed for comfort, and Roy felt the urge to move into a more comfortable position, but he didn't want to disturb Riza, who was leaning on his shoulder. He wasn't sure if she was awake or not.
Finally the doctor came out, and walked over to them. Roy nudged Riza, sending her back into the world of consciousness. The doctor stood in front of them before saying,
"He appears to be fine now, but he's asking for you."
Roy looked at Riza in puzzlement. Sure they had talked to him briefly, but did he really trust them that much already? Roy just nodded, and walked past the doctor and into the hospital room. The boy was sitting up in the bed, with a pained expression on his face. Both of his fists were clenched at his sides, and he was visibly shaking. As Roy and Riza entered the room, he looked at them in shock, as if not really believing that they were there. Then the biggest grin that Roy had ever seen in his life, spread across the young man's face. But although he looked happy, Roy could see that he was sad as well for some reason.
Roy and Riza walked further into the room, and Roy could suddenly see that the boy's eyes weren't brown anymore, they were a chocolatey gold colour. They were brimmed with tears, and the man himself was having trouble keeping composed.
He swallowed and choked out just one word, "Oberst!"
The colonel didn't umderstand what the boy had said, but he got the impression that it was said affectionately. The boy flopped down on the bed in relief. "Ich bin zu Hause! Es hat funktioniert!"
Catching Roy's confused glance he laughed, shaking his head. "Trottel Oberst."
Roy was now even more confused than he had originally been, if that was even possible. He opened his mouth to speak, but paused unsure of what to say. "Um... do I know you?"
The man seemed to find this hilarious. "Oh mein Gott. Wie dumm bist du? Colonel Bastard..."
Even if Roy couldn't understand the first bit, he could easily understand the second. "Oh jesus. No way..."
The other man just smiled sadly and said, "Good to see you haven't gotten any smarter since I was last here trottel Oberst!"
His breaths were catching in the back of his throat and he felt Riza stiffen beside him as she came to the same conclusion.
"Ed..."
