Ch. 11: Blood Lines

He exited the Dirty Robber through the backdoor. He didn't drink too much but felt his head throbbing. As he stepped out of the Robber, he looked around for a brief moment then released his breath.

He might grab something to eat.

He pulled out his wallet, opened it, and looked inside to see that there was no cash in there. "Damn," he cussed. He felt his heart pounding and he leaned against the wall, watching the world spin before him.

He tried to move down the alleyway until he stopped at a sound of clattering. He turned around and shouted, "Oh it's you." As he stated those words, he felt a hard impact across his jaw.

He dropped in pain with blood dripping from his mouth. He looked up and pleaded, "Please don't." However, there was no mercy for the weapon was raised once more with him being hit in the head once more. His body dropped to the ground while the killer raised the weapon and began to hit the body repeatedly until the blood pooled under the body.

Jane's POV- Hours later…

We arrived at the Dirty Robber when dawn was slowly coming up. I heard a loud motor rumble and looked over to see Kris coming up the area. As she pulled up, she switched the engine off, pulled her helmet off, and walked over to Maura and me. "Did you guys just get here," she inquired.

I nodded, "Yeah."

"Jane," we all looked over to see Frost and Frankie approaching us. Frost looked pale and so did Frankie to my surprise. Frankie shook his head and informed us, "It isn't pretty over there."

"That bad?"

"Worse," Frost croaked.

Before Kris and I could even say anything, Maura began to walk over to the crime scene. Kris and I quickly followed but once we passed the crime scene tape, I could agree that it was not pretty at all.

In fact, it was bloody.

The body rested on the floor with a pool of blood under it. His head seemed to be bash open with the skull cracked open and his jaw broken. Korsak stood over it, looking down at it before he noticed us. As we walked over to him, I could see Kris seemed to pale a bit. I touched her shoulder gently and inquired softly, "You okay?"

Maura had already crouch down but looked up to check on Kris. Kris nodded then cleared her throat. "I'm fine," she assured me as she went around the pool of blood. She then pulled out her crime scene gloves as she asked, "Are we sure it's him?"

"It is," Korsak confirmed it. He then handed Kris a wallet, which she opened to pull out an identification card. As she did this, I heard a loud sigh and I turned my head to see that in Kris' hand was Dylan's driver license.

"Damn…" I mumbled then looked over at the body. "That can't be the same guy," I stated in surprise as I examined the bloody mess.

"I'll get the fingerprints checked for you," Maura told us.

"What could cause all of that kind of damage?"

"A heavy blunt object."

"Anything specific?"

Maura seemed to turn her head and glared at me. I placed my hands up while Kris simply stated, patting my back gently. "That's as vague but specific we will ever get from her," she pointed out. "Korsak, was Dylan at the party in the Robber," Kris inquired as she looked around the crime scene.

"Yeah," he answered, "eyewitnesses saw him in the Robber for the majority of the night, sipping the same drink before he decided to step out. No one saw him until a couple were exiting out of the Robber and found the bloody mess."

"I haven't seen so much blood since my father," Kris pointed out.

I noticed that her eyes went toward above us and I looked at her. I stood up and asked softly, "What's going through your big head right now?"

"There are only two ways to catch Dylan off guard. The first is following him out through the backdoor but no one else witnessed that. The way we entered wouldn't work because they would be facing each other and that looks like a back hit-"

"I will not confirm that," Maura pointed out.

Kris rolled her eyes causing me to let out a small chuckle. Maura shook her head and returned her attention to the body. "It was really close in means of contact," I replied. "He must have known who his attacker was."

"That's an idea. Then you have the fact that, above us, is a fire escape," she pointed up.

"What goes up," I smirked.

Kris tapped her head, "Must come down." She looked over at a dumpster and gestured toward it. "Shall we?"

R&I

"Damn this is high," I cussed as I reached the top of the roof with Kris.

"Just don't look down," Kris retorted as she began to walk around the roof. She placed her glasses on and looked around as she said, "I'm hoping that we find something up here." I nodded in agreement and we began to move across the floor area, looking for anything that could indicate a sign that the killer was here.

The roof seemed under disturb and if anyone was here, they knew how to avoid any detection of it.

"What are we going to do," Kris asked.

I looked up at her to see the concern expression. We both stopped in the middle of the roof with her moving over to me. I touched her hand softly as I assured her, "I know we'll find something."

"A blunt object…"

"Two by four?"

"That doesn't look like a two by four. That looks like pure rage with something heavier. It's overkill."

I bit my lower lip, "Everyone seemed to dislike him. But that's a lot of rage right there." I noticed Kris' eyebrows knitted together. "You're thinking," I stated.

Kris nodded and removed her glasses, "Yeah…I think we need to do a couple interviews over again."

"Kris! Jane," we both looked over the edge to see Frost who was looking up. "Maura took the body and Allison wishes to speak to Kris."

I looked at Kris with a raised eyebrow. Kris seemed a bit shocked also but shook it off as I pointed out, "Be careful."

"Of what," Kris questioned as we began to walk down the fire escape.

"She trusts you right?"

"I believe so."

We touched the ground and began to walk down the alleyway. I noticed the determination crossing Kris' face causing me to stop her. "Kris," she looked at me, "just make sure that you separate yourself from this case."

"I'm separated. I just…don't know why she seems to trust me more." I shrugged at this also before we began to walk toward the entrance of the Robber where everyone was.

Kris' POV

The Robber had been clear with only several people. Frankie, Frost and Korsak helped in questioning a majority of them but it seemed that the only two people left were Allison Carter and Jennifer Newman. We looked around the empty bar and walked further in with our presence known.

"Rizzoli. Marx," Murray shouted causing both of us to look over at him. "When can I get my bar back," he inquired.

"Give us about an hour or so, Murray," Jane replied.

Murray nodded and disappeared in the back, leaving us alone with Miss Newman and Allison. We began to walk over with Miss Newman asking, "How come we are the only ones left?"

"We wanted to interview you two personally again," Jane answered.

"But you already did. What more do you need from us?"

"Just your cooperation," I retorted.

Miss Newman frowned but I noticed Allison look up at me. "I'll talk with you again, Detective," Allison told me.

"I appreciate it. I just need to talk to you again," I informed Allison. She looked at me for a brief moment before she nodded. "How about we sit in a booth while Detective Rizzoli speaks with Miss Newman outside," I suggested.

Jane looked at me with a raised eyebrow and I returned the look that I pleaded to trust me. I noticed Jane touched the scars on her hands before she looked at Miss Newman and said, "Let's step outside, Miss Newman."

As they left, Allison and I took a seat in one of the booths. She was looking down at her hands then looked at my right hand. She gave it a curious look before she asked, "Is it true?"

"About what," I questioned back.

"That Dylan's dead?"

I let out a soft sigh then answered, "I'm sorry but yes..." Suddenly Allison began to cry softly causing me to hand her some napkins. Separate yourself, I reminded myself before I leaned in and said, "I need you to tell me everything that happened here before the police arrived."

Wiping her tears away, Allison sat up a bit more. She took in a deep breath before she stated, "I organized this so we can do a memorial for Ben and Valentine, as you know, and Dylan came because he wanted to keep an eye out for me. He got jealous so easily but as we discussed what we could do, Dylan wandered off. I saw him later at the bar, drinking a small glass of vodka. He seemed to be nursing it than his normal drinking of multiple glasses."

"Did he seem upset?"

She shook her head, "Not at the time but then he wanted to leave a couple hours later. He was telling me that I needed to come with him and I told him that I didn't want to."

"Then what happened?"

"We got into a yelling match, going back and forth about how I cared more about Ben than him. He said that I was nothing but a whore then he left. I didn't see him after that." I continued to jot down the notes while I heard her sigh loudly then muttered, "First Ben then Valentine and now Dylan. Who is killing them, Detective?"

"I don't know," I answered truthfully, "but I will try to stop them."

"You sound like Ben," she chuckled sadly. She ran her hand through her hair as she continued, "He always saw a ray of hope out of everything. I don't know how you can even see hope with your job involving so much death."

I gave a light smile and retorted, "I've seen a lot in my life." I looked through my notebook seeing that I had written that Ben's family background was still vague. "Maybe you can clear this up for me? Did Ben have family?"

"No, he was an orphan for a bit then got adopted. His mother passed from cancer several years ago."

"So what's going to happen now?"

"It's all up to Jennifer now since she's the owner of the theater."

"I'm sorry."

"Yeah...maybe, it just wasn't meant to be," Allison whispered. I gave a soft smile, touching her hand gently. "I could go into teaching. I have a degree and everything. It's better if the show closed and we just memorialize everyone," she informed me.

"How would you do that," I inquired.

"We decided that we would rent another theater and we could perform songs to raise money. We could donate it to a charity that Ben supported." I then noticed her look at me once more before she stated quietly, "My offer is still open, Detective."

I rubbed the scar on my hand nervously. "I'm not sure, Miss Carter," I replied uneasily.

"It would be nice."

"But why me?"

Allison smiled at me gently, touching my hand. "I don't know if it's because I have a feeling in my gut that I think you want to return or that you remind me of Ben," she told me.

"I do?"

She nodded, "You do. You remind me of him so much especially in your eyes. You have this look that I can believe you no matter what."

"You can," I assured.

"Then try this please?"

R&I

As I stepped out of the Robber, I noticed Jane closed her phone quickly before looking up at me. I raised a curious eyebrow but ignored the gesture. Soon Jane stepped over to me while I leaned against the wall of the Robber for a moment. "So," Jane asked.

I glanced over my shoulder to see Allison leaving with Miss Newman. She gave a small wave while I gave a curt nod. I looked back at Jane and replied, "I got that Dylan was in the bar most of the time then he went into a tantrum with Allison before leaving through the backdoor."

"Jennifer said the same thing." I pushed myself from the wall and began to walk toward my motorcycle while Jane asked, "So what happens to the show?"

"It's done but they are going to do a memorial for them."

"How?"

I hopped on my motorcycle and answered, "Performing and getting cash donated to a charity that Ben liked." I then asked, "So who was on the phone with you?"

"No one," Jane replied.

I gave her a suspicious look but shrugged. I then placed my helmet on as I told her, "I'll meet you at Headquarters." Jane nodded and began to walk back to her cruiser. I started the engine as I closed my eyes, thinking about what Allison asked me. I shook my head and mumbled, "I only told I would consider it. Just consider it."

Maura's POV

Flashback...a couple hours ago...

I entered the morgue to see Dylan's body lying on the body slab. "Dr. Isles," I looked over to see Susie entering the morgue with a worried expression crossing her face.

"Is there something wrong, Susie," I inquired.

"You know how you sent Mr. Monroe's blood to the lab?"

"Yes?" She handed a folder to me, which I opened quickly to read over. As I read over it, my eyes shot up to Susie and asked, "Did you tell anyone else?"

"No, I just received it back but was there a-"

"Thank you, Susie but I will handle this. Just do not tell anyone please."

"Of course, Doctor."

I watched Susie leave and I took in a deep breath before I looked back at Dylan's body. I then pulled out my cell phone and dialed. "Rizzoli," Jane answered.

"Jane, I need you at the morgue immediately," I informed her.

"Sure, Kris and I are almost done and-"

"I need you without Kris. Just don't ask questions and please get down here."

I was still doing the external examination when I heard the doors opened. "I sent his blood over for a toxicology report already. He took blunt force trauma to the head multiple times," I stated immediately.

"What's wrong? Usually when you tell me not to bring Kris that it involves her," Jane asked instead. I glanced over my shoulder and stepped away from the body. I removed my gloves before I began to walk over to the folder. "Maura, just tell me," Jane demanded with worry laced in her voice.

"This might be like repeating history again to you when I explain this and-"

"Maura!"

"Jane, I have to explain this," I snapped back. Jane grew quiet as I handed the folder while I switched my computer on. Suddenly I brought up a small chart on the computer as I explained, "There are the exact same markers in certain areas. There hasn't been any contamination either."

"English, Maura."

"Jane…certain DNA markers are matching. It's like that time when Colin came in."

With this statement, I watched Jane look up slowly with a surprise look before it turned to pure anguish. "You got be kidding me," she stated.

"I don't kid, Jane especially with this type of information."

"This is like deja vu all over again. This can't be correct, Maura."

I looked down. "I doubled check everything. There was no way that there was any-"

"Hey Mom, do we have anything," I heard Kris suddenly asked. Jane and I looked over at her with surprised expression causing Kris to give a curious look. "Is everything okay," she inquired.

We stood silent for a brief moment before I stepped away from the desk and said, "I've barely started my external examination and I sent blood tests back to the lab."

"Ok, that's good." She then looked over at where Jane was and pointed to the folder in her hand, "What's that?"

Jane placed the folder down and I retorted, "It's nothing."

I could feel the hives begin to form. I watched as Kris' blue eyes darted over to my skin then at Jane and the folder. "You're getting hives which means that it's something," Kris retorted as she began to walk over. Jane began to back away with the folder until Kris cornered her with her hand out. "Hand it over, Ma," Kris demanded.

Jane looked at me with a sad expression before I looked down and nodded sadly. Jane gave the folder to Kris who snatched it out of her hand. She then pulled out her glasses, placing them on as she opened the folder. She began to go over it and stated, "I don't see the fuss, it's just Ben's blood and-"

Her eyes widened while Jane moved over to me. I touched Jane's hand who gave mine a light squeeze while we watched Kris' expression change from pure curiosity to rage and pain. She looked up at me and stated gravely, "Tell me this is wrong."

"It…it's not, Kris," I replied softly.

Kris removed her glasses, continuing to go over the folder. "It can't be right! Why is this coming back now," she interrogated with venom laced in the words.

"Kris, these just came back and we told you that it takes time-"

"Why now?! We are too far in! I'm too far in!"

"Kiddo…" Jane stepped over but I watched Kris step back.

I watched as the confusion crossed Kris' expression fast before she shook her head. "This can't be happening," she whispered. "This is not real."

"It's real, Kris. I'm so-"

"Stop," Kris snapped at Jane. She shook her head for a brief moment before she tossed the folder aside and stormed out of the morgue.

Jane quickly bolted after her but I knew that Kris left already. I heard Jane's footsteps return with her saying quietly, "She's gone."

"I know," I replied sadly.

I picked up the folder, dusting it off as I went over the markers once more. I shook my head a bit while Jane asked, "What?"

"It's…horrible and sickening."

I felt Jane wrapped her arms around my waist and rested her head on my shoulder. "How so," she whispered.

"Because…I can see the pain that Kris is feeling. I know how she feels and I couldn't protect her."

I felt Jane kissed the side of my head. "She would have found either way, Maura," she informed me. "It was only a matter of time. We did what we could only do."

"That be?"

"Just being her parents."

Gabriella's POV- One hour later…

RING!

"Hello?"

"Gabby, it's Maura."

"Hi Maura, is everything okay?"

"Listen sweetheart, Kris disappeared and I don't think she wishes to see Jane and me at the moment."

"Something happened?"

"Kris received some unsettling news. We tracked her phone for you if you can go right now."

"I'm leaving the hospital right now."

R&I

I pulled up to Saint Christopher's church and immediately, I noticed Kris' motorcycle parked by the doorway. As I stepped out of the car, I could see the lights were on as well as hear the small echoes of what sounded like piano keys. I walked over and gently pushed the door opened to reveal the dim lightened area.

I entered quietly and immediately, I was hit by the sound of piano keys being hit harshly. The sounds were sharp then I heard a voice grunting, "Find glory…beyond the cheap colored lights…one song, before the sun sets…Glory, on another empty life…Time flies, time dies…" Suddenly in one quick gesture, the music stopped abruptly and a loud yell came.

I flinched at the yell but continued to walk down the aisle. As I drew closer to the alter to get a view of the piano player, I began to hear the small taps on the piano instead of the harsh ones earlier. "Allison Carter asked me if I could perform for the memorial charity they wish to do." I rounded around to see Kris peering over her glasses as she looked down at her right hand and on top of the piano counter was her laptop. I sat down next to her while she tapped a couple keys and asked, "Maura and Jane sent you after me?"

"They said you disappeared after you got some unsettling news," I answered. I touched her cheek to make her face me but she refused. I removed my hand and asked softly, "What happened?"

Kris didn't answer for a long time. I glanced up at her computer to see several documents and a DNA marker chart as well as a picture of her victim, Ben. She continued to stare at the keys before she whispered, "I always thought that it was just Matthew and I. I thought that my parents were happy at a time but I guess Adrian Marx has always been selfish. I should have figured that he cheated on my mother after Matthew was born. No one knew…not even Price and if he did, he took it to his damn grave!"

She then pounded her fist against the keys harshly. Never had I seen my girlfriend so upset and quickly, I took her hand and whispered, "Kris?"

She must have heard the worry in my voice for the anger on her face dropped to pure anguish. "He was an orphan too. His birth mother left him at the hospital and he was in foster care for a bit as I was but, at least, people adopted him by age eight. At least, he didn't have to experience a monster. I bet he didn't know when he met me…I bet he didn't," she muttered.

As I listened to her, I began to piece together the mysterious statements together before I glanced up at the computer. My eyes immediately went to the DNA marker chart to see that there were three of them side by side. As I observed them, realization hit me like a ton of bricks causing me to look at Kris who noticed my realization. "Oh love," I whispered softly.

"Why me, Gabriella," Kris crocked before I wrapped my arms around her, holding her against me as she began to sob on my shoulder. I felt tears run down my cheeks while I listened to her whisper gently, "He was my half brother…he was my half brother."

Oh yeah, didn't expect that huh? However, if you did, I got to hear how because I kept it a bit hard and yes, I did borrow the "Beast in Me" when Maura finds Paddy is her biological father and she had a half brother. I didn't expect this plot twist but I found that it made sense for me and it was nagging me.

So what happens next? You have to wait and see…so review, PM, comment, etc! Thank you!
