I am back! My inspiration for this story has come back so I am going to continue. I may get back to my other story soon, but for now I am going to concentrate on this one.
Dylan Marvil
Dylan never did find either of her sisters. She knew that Ryan would be sitting with the Prefects, but Jaime was probably off somewhere with her group of friends and didn't want Dylan to bug them anyway. Dylan did end up finding Alicia sitting with Nina, Celia, Skye, and a couple of Celia and Skye's friends. Dylan guesses that this is who she will be hanging out with once school starts. Dylan is sure that Alicia, Nina, and herself are destined for Slytherin being that all of their family members were Slytherin. Massie will probably be a Gryffindor which means that Dylan would be stupid to associate with her since the Gryffindors do not get along with Slytherins and Kristen will probably either be a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw so she will either not be able to associate with her or they will just end up drifting a part.
"Come on Dylan that giant man is calling for all first years to follow him," Alicia said grabbing Dylan's wrist and breaking her out of her trance. Alicia then linked arms with Nina and Dylan as they made their way towards the giant man.
Dylan looked around for Massie and Kristen, but they seemed to be lost in the crowd of 1st years.
"Wow this place is beautiful. It makes the Aliquam Velit places look so tiny," Alicia pointed out. Dylan looked around. She had to admit that the Hogwarts castle was beautiful.
When they reached the Black Lake Dylan saw groups of boats sitting in the Black Lake.
"Fer to a boat," the giant kept repeating as he helped 1st years into a boat.
Dylan got into a boat with Alicia, Nina, and Dune Baxter, a boy from Aliquam Velit who liked to dress like a muggle surfer boy, but now he was in his uniform black robe. Apart from his shoulder length, straight blonde hair that he didn't bother to pull back he looked like everyone else.
"Dude this place is sick," he said looking at the Black Lake obviously wanting to put his toes into the water.
"I cannot believe we are finally here," Alicia beamed.
Dylan knew that if Massie were around she would hate how giddy Alicia seemed, but Dylan didn't mind. If she wasn't so nervous about her sorting she would be giddy too. Even though she knew that it was destined that she will be a Slytherin what if everyone hated her like her sisters did. Dylan thought back to that nice, motherly lady she met at Diagon Alley and how her sisters were so embarrassed that Dylan was seen with her. Will Dylan just embarrass her family more when she is in Slytherin. Dylan has a lot riding on her Hogwarts education. She needs to prove to the world that she is a Marvil...even if she doesn't really feel like she belongs.
And what if her sisters are right and she is a Hufflepuff? She shook her head. Her mother assured her that it wouldn't happen that way.
Dylan looked over at all of the other students in boats. Everyone seemed to have a look on their face that was a mix of nerves and awe as they looked up at the Hogwarts castle. Dylan did find Massie, who was on a boat with Kristen and those two boys from the compartment, Ron and Harry.
Dylan wasn't sure what to think of them. Ron was a Weasley so she knows that she can't be caught dead with him or her sisters will freak out. Harry on the other hand...She really wasn't sure what it was about him. When she looked at him she felt a sense of something...familiarity. She knows that she has never met him, but at the same time she felt a connection to him that made Dylan feel really nervous. Not like a crush or anything, but something else. She doesn't know how to describe it.
"We're here," Nina beamed as Dylan felt the boat hit land.
When the exited the giant man went to the front, gave a toad to a young, pudgy boy who had lost it earlier, and knocked three times on the castle's giant oak door.
When the door opened Dylan saw an older woman in emerald green robes with a stern look on her face.
"Professor McGonagall, the firs' years are here," said the giant man.
"Thank Hagrid. I will take it from here," she said as she opened the door wider.
The castle was bigger than she thought. She could probably fit her entire house in here. The place had the antique charm that Aliquam Velit had, but it just seemed bigger than anything that Dylan had ever seen.
The students followed Professor McGonagall across the stone floor to wherever their destination was. Dylan could hear students talking from a room near them, but Professor McGonagall led them to a room into a small chamber instead.
The chamber was cramped and Dylan was practically standing on top of Alicia.
"Welcome to Hogwarts. The start of term banquet will begin soon in the Great Hall, but before you take your seats you will be sorted into your Houses. The Sorting is very important because whatever house you are placed in will be where you spend your next seven years and your house will become your family away from home," Professor McGonagall explained.
Dylan's heart jumped at the word "family".
"You will have classes with your House, you will sleep in your House dormitory, and you will spend your free time in your House's common room. The four Houses of Hogwarts are named after the four founders: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Each house is noble and has its own history that you will continue on. Your triumphs will earn your House points while any rule-breaking will lose your House points. At the end of the year the House with the most points will earn your House the House Cup. The Sorting Ceremony will start in a few minutes. I suggest that you all prepare. I shall return when it is time," she continued.
She then left the room. This is when the whispering started.
"My sisters tell me that a hat decides which House you will be in," Nina whispered.
Dylan's sister told her that she has to go through some painful test, but she hopes that they were just kidding.
All of a sudden she heard a few kids scream. She looked around and saw a group of ghosts appear through the back wall. They all seemed to be arguing and not paying attention to the students. One was a fat looking monk.
"Sometimes you just have to forgive and forget. Give him a second chance," he said.
"Haven't we given Peeves enough chances? He's not even a ghost!" exclaimed another ghost who had silver stains on his outfit that Dylan is pretty sure was blood.
"Hey! Who are all of you?" asked another ghost wearing tights and a ruff finally noticing them.
"Ah! First years about to be sorted. Hope to see you all in Hufflepuff. That was my old house,' smiled the Friar.
Dylan flinched at the idea of being a Hufflepuff. She just couldn't be a Hufflepuff! It might be fine for some, but she doubts she would be allowed back home if she were one.
"Move along now! The Sorting Ceremony is about to begin!" said the stern voice that belonged to Professor McGonagall who returned.
She had them form a line and then led them to the Great Hall. Dylan saw four long tables and another long table at the front where the Professors were sitting. She looked up and saw a beautiful starry night. Dylan looked over at the Slytherin table and spotted her two sisters sitting together whispering to each other and giggling. Dylan hoped that one day she could do that with them too.
Professor McGonagall placed a stool in front of them and then put an old wizard's hat on top of it. The hat began to twitch and then began to sing.
"Oh you may not think I'm pretty..." it started.
The hat described each house and it made since to Dylan. She would put on the hat and the hat would sort her. It made more sense than a test.
"When I call your name you will sit on the stool and put on the hat to be sorted," Professor McGonagall explained.
"Abbot, Hannah!"
Dylan saw a girl with a pink face and blond pigtails stumble up to the stool and put on the hat that fell over her eyes. It only took a moment before the hat yelled out.
"Hufflepuff!"
The Hufflepuff table cheered and the girl smiled as she went to her new table.
"Abley, Layne!"
Dylan knew Layne from Aliquam Velit. She was quite an oddball like her muggle obsessed father. Dylan pitied her brother Chris who actually seemed normal.
"Ravenclaw!" the house shouted. Layne let out what seemed to be a sigh of relief and went to her new table.
"Baxter, Dune!"
Dune walked up with confidence.
"Gryffindor!"
Dylan knew how much her sisters hated the Gryffindors. They were the Slytherin rivals.
"Block, Massie!"
Dylan noticed how confident Massie seemed. She wished she had her friend's confidence. She knew that Massie would be an alpha no matter what House she was put into. It didn't take the hat long to decide.
"Gryffindor!"
Massie beamed at this.
"Bones, Susan!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Boot, Terry!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Broklehurst, Mandy!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Brown, Lavender!"
"Gryffindor!"
"Callas, Nina!"
The pretty Spanish girl that was standing with Alicia and Dylan walked up. Nina was a Callas and fits in her family. There was only one house where she could end up.
"Slytherin!"
Nina gave a proud smile as she went to join her sisters at the Slytherin table. Nina's sisters greeted her warmly and seemed happy that their sister was joining them. She envied Nina at that moment.
"Michael Corner!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Stephen Cornfoot!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Tracey Davis!"
"Slytherin!"
"Kevin Entwhistle!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Justin Finch-Fletchley!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Seamus Finnigan!"
"Gryffindor!"
"Cam Fisher!"
Cam was one of the more popular boys back in Aliquam Velit. Massie even had a crush on him at one point before she decided that Derrick Harrington was more alpha. Cam's brother Harris was the Head Boy and a Hufflepuff prefect so Cam would probably be a Hufflepuff too. Cam is probably the only person who Dylan knew who would be a proud Hufflepuff.
"Hufflepuff!"
Cam beamed at this and ran to join the brother that he admired.
"Hermione Granger!"
Dylan recognized her as the annoying girl helping that boy find his toad on the bus. Her hair was bushy and she had buck teeth. Total LBR in Dylan's opinion.
"Gryffindor!"
"Anthony Goldstein!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Kristen Gregory!"
Kristen walked up nervously. Dylan was always the closest to Kristen in the Pretty Committee so she secretly did hope that Kristen would end up in Slytherin, but she had a feeling that it wouldn't happen.
"Ravenclaw!"
Kristen gave a quick look to the Gryffindor table where Massie was sitting and made the way to her new family and friends.
"Derrick Harrington!"
Dylan looked at her best friend's longtime crush. Dylan even had a crush on him for a little bit, but her sisters found out and said that it was bad enough that she hung out with Massie who was a blood traitor, but she could never actually date one or she would be a bigger embarrassment to the Marvil family.
"Hufflepuff!"
This actually surprised Dylan. She was sure that Derrick would be a Gryffindor like his sister who was the Head Girl and Gryffindor Prefect. Plus most of his family were Gryffindors. She pitied Derrick. If his family was anything like her's he would be a total blacksheep now.
"Wayne Hopkins!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Josh Hotz!"
Josh was the male version of Alicia. He loved to gossip and was very stylish. And they obviously had crushes on each other.
"Slytherin!"
Josh smiled as he joined the green and silver table.
"Kemp Hurley!"
Kemp was a typical boy. He loved adventure and found perverted jokes funny. Dylan figured he would be a Gryffindor, but then again if Derrick was a Hufflepuff anything could go.
"Gryffindor!"
Kemp beamed. Probably because he got into a more respected house than his friend Derrick. He was competitive in that way.
"Megan Jones!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Sue Li!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Neville Longbottom!"
The chubby boy looking for his toad looked like he was about to pee his pants.
"Gryffindor!"
The boy yelled out in surprised and starting to take off running. The entire Great Hall laughed except for Dylan who was way too nervous. Neville then slowly walked back up to return the hat. Dylan was quite surprised that this scared little boy would be a Gryffindor who her sisters said were cocky and full of themselves. Maybe there was something that she didn't see that the hat did.
"Claire Lyons!"
A timid looking blonde girl with big blue eyes and rosy cheeks went up. Her angelic look made her the poster child of Hufflepuff.
"Hufflepuff!"
And Dylan was right.
"Isobel MacDougal!"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Ernie MacMillan!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Roger Malone!"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Dylan Marvil!"
Dylan took a deep breath. The time was now. Dylan just wanted to get over it at this point. Just become a Slytherin and start fitting in to her family.
When Dylan sat down and the hat went above her eyes she began to hear a voice coming from the hat.
"Hmm I guess the rumors are true. I never thought I would ever get the chance to sort you as I sorted your mother and father."
Dylan was confused. Did the hat know that she was a blacksheep and figured that her mom would send her to Salem.
"Oh I know more than you think. I can read your thoughts and see into your subconscious. I know more about you than you think you do. I know all and I know where you should go. Although I could tell you the truth of you past I think it would be better if you figure it out yourself. I will put you in the House to lead you into the way. Definitely not Hufflepuff. Ravenclaw wouldn't work either."
Dylan sighed in relief that she wouldn't be put into Ravenclaw, but she was confused that this hat seemed to know something about her past that she did not. What was this hat talking about?
"There is only one House you can be in where you will find the truth. And no it is not Slytherin like you might think."
Dylan's eyes grew wide. It couldn't be...
"Gryffindor!" the hat called out.
The Gryffindor table cheered loudly as Dylan slowly made her way to sit next to Massie, afraid to look over at her sisters.
Uh oh! Dylan is a Gryffindor when all Marvils have always been Slytherin. A family that takes tradition seriously would not take this kindly. How will her family react? Will they disown her more than they already do?
Part 2 of the Sorting is coming very soon!
