CHAPTER 11
As even more broken glass shifted and fell to the floor. Leonore spoke with anger, anger directed towards Gideon.
"Why is my daughter locked in the vault?"
"I did it to protect her." His voice hard as he held tight to Sonora's hand, walking closer to her mother. She squeezed his hand, a way of letting him know she wasn't mad at him. If anything she felt a little disappointed that she didn't get to fight side by side with her people.
"Wasn't that the point of locking her in her room?"
"Well you of all people should know, how stubborn she is." Sonora squeezed his hand tighter, his teeth started to grin at his rising temper.
"I was locked in mother. But its my room, I can get out. Yes, I fought my way here, even momentarily in the battle."
At the moment Leonore took in full site of her daughter. Her lightly disheveled hair, slightly bloody hands, down the the slight tear along her dress.
"You did what?" Shock had finally hit her. Looking slightly stunned at the revelation.
"I fought my way here. I retrieved my double arm blades from the armory. I took down at least a half dozen, to get to this very room."
"As Queen you shouldn't have risked your life." Shaking her head in disbelief.
"I did what I had to do. I didn't want to think of myself as a coward. As someone who hides as my very people are slaughtered."
"Its one of the reasons why I locked her in, Leonore. That not only is she Queen, but the one who holds my heart. Like I said I did it to protect her." Releasing Sonora's hand he stepped towards Leonore. Handing her the scapulars of some of their fallen people.
"We lost sixteen. Sixteen of our people who were ascended in this battle." Taking a step back beside Sonora.
"This battle is far from over or are you both blind?"
"What are you saying mother?"
"I attempted to sacrifice myself to stop Naberius' plans. You both just handed him the keys to destroying us all."
"Don't you think we didn't know that? But mother it would have been suspicious if we didn't. I told him to do it."
"Are you insane? They took me thinking they had the Queen. I was ascending anyway." Almost shaking with emotion. Had they just killed them all, nothing they could do but prepare themselves for what was to come.
"No, I did what I though was right. Things have to play out this way, I believe that. For the salvation will come."
Without another word Leonore quietly stormed off. Heading towards the very room where the scapulars of past fallen gargoyles were remembered. She silently hoped that they didn't lose their lives for nothing. Walking her back to her room so she could clean up and rest while he looked for their friends. As commander he would be gone from her even more then he wanted to be. He still had responsibilities to lead them and they needed to be ready.
Once the door was shut behind her, she kicked off her shoes. Heading inside her closet she pulled out a simple gray dress. Nothing frilly or sparkling, something simple. Laying it out on the bed before going into the bathroom. Turning on the water of the tub, she ran her bloody hand under the warming water.
Hissing to herself the sting from her open wounds. Gently blowing on them to try and ease the pain. Disarming the torn and bloody dress on the floor. She slipped into the filling tub. She sat there, letting the tears fall, in the rising water. Turning the water off, she laid her head back on the cool stone of the wall.
"I want a full report on on the damage. Make sure you find Keziah. And Ophir."
"We have, Gideon. They were wounded in the cathedral during the battle." Barachel reported.
"Well where are they?" Gideon started pacing, things seemed to be dragging on slower then he hoped.
"I saw to it they were taken to the med ward."
"Good, go help where you can. I will be by there shortly."
"Very well, I will have that report to you as soon as I can."
"Thank you."
They nodded and parted ways. Gideon needed to check on Sonora. It had been hours since he had last seen her. He would visit the med ward before seeing her.
"Ophir, I thought I lost you." Keziah choked out.
"No matter what, I cannot leave you."
"And I you, My love."
Barachel made sure that they placed Ophir in the bed next to Keziah. So they would be together even if the world was going to end. They had taken the worst of the attack on the Cathedral. Keziah's face would forever bare a scar, one that ran from her temple to her cheek. Among various other injuries, the one across her back was the worst. For Ophir the scars would never be as simple. Forcing his soul to stay. Forcing himself from ascending, had left his body weak. If he had to choose between the two, he would do it all over again. Not just to save her again, but to help save them all.
With their already small numbers, even losing sixteen of their own, was still hard. Many were injured and another battle would soon be upon them. Gideon made his rounds in the med ward. Speaking to some of the wounded til he made his way over to his friends.
"Ophir, How are you holding up?"
"Nothing I can't handle." Managing a weak smile.
"Very true." Gideon laughed kindly, gently patting his friend's shoulder. Looking over to see an equally weak Keziah.
"How is she?"
"She'll live." A tear running down his face.
"Rest my friend, so you may fight more battles her side and mine."
"The war isn't over is it?"
Keziah painfully shifted on the cot, letting out a low hiss as she settled back again. Ophir turning away from Gideon to face her. Gideon's eyes followed.
"I don't believe it is. So please rest, so you can fight another day."
"What has happened to Sonora? I heard talk before I woke up here. That she was taken."
Ophir tried to sit up, but Gideon wouldn't let him. Placing a firm grip on his arm.
"They made a mistake, they took Leonore. I have since seen to that matter resolved."
"So she's ok? I feel awful I wasn't able to protect her." Keziah's eyes filled with tears.
"She's fine. Your probably the one who trained her in secret while I was away.", Gideon assured her with a smile.
"I should go see her." This time the tears flowed down her cheeks, unable to hold them back.
"You need to rest first. She'll have my neck if she finds out I let you leave in this condition."
Partly surrendering in protest, she relented to his request.
Her senses became foggy, as she climbed out of the tub. Barely able to keep herself upright, she just barely managed to dry herself. Attempting to slip something on to cover herself, barely managing to slide it down low enough to hide herself. Hitting the bed with a small thud.
A vision took over her mind. Seeing the world as an invisible entity, the vision showed her many things. Showing her that Adam would defeat Naberius and his soon to be awakened army, but only with the help of the Order. The next painful vision sent tears from her eyes in this world, while it showed her the death of her friends, mother, and worst of all Gideon, if she didn't allow her people to help. The third was almost unbearable to witness. This one showed a lone little girl, she couldn't quite place it why she looked familiar. Her dark curly hair to her bright steel colored eyes. Before she could see more the vision started to fade.
Gideon had come in to find her half naked, curled into a shivering ball on their bed. Gently trying to wake her and his brushed the tears from her face. Her body felt like ice as he scooped her up into his arms. So he could lay her down with her head on the pillows. Wrapping her in the heavy down comforter that she was once curled up on top of. Moving the stray hair stuck to her face, he tried to wake her again. When she started to stir, he quickly got up to light the fire in hopes its heat would help warm her. Once he had it going to sat down again next to her. The blue hue of her eyes came I into view and her eyes started to slowly open.
"Sonora? Are you okay?"
Nodding slightly as she attempted to sit up. Her head had other plans as a small wave of dizziness came. Settling back down as her body slowly warmed, Gideon took her hand in his.
"What happened?" Before she could break the silence, he did it for her.
"I was in the bath, I got out and that's really the last thing I remember before the visions."
Gideon gave her a worried look. Very few of the Queens in the Order's Lineage had ever had visions. Her mother was never blessed with the curse, so they knew little of what to do about it. They left her weak and barely able to move around afterwards.
Unsure of how to even begin to go about pressing her for more information. "Can you recall anything you seen?"
"I saw a very possible victory against Naberius. I saw the heartbreaking scene of the possibility losing all those dear to me and...and there was...a little girl."
A jumbled mix of concern and confusion crossed his face. Helping her sit up before passing her a small glass of water. The dizziness was finally starting to pass as she sipped the cool liquid before slowly placing the glass back on the table. Taking a deep breath she took his hands in hers. She knew he wouldn't take hearing that the creature he despised the most would lead to salvation. Gripping his hand tightly as she dove into the bare details of the first vision. How its outcome would effect and attribute to the second. She would avoid telling him the little bit she knew of the third one. It was weird that the girl looked so familiar and unknown. What the point of troubling him about it until she knew, so until then she avoided mentioning it again.
"Adam is coming back."
"Why would that abomination come back here?" His anger rising like the heat from the fire.
"He will help us stop these demons."
"He seems to be the very reason we are in this mess to begin with."
"I've seen it Gideon. The Angel would not send me lies. The Order has been fighting this war way before he was ever created." Color returning to her cheeks as her anger flared, letting go of his hands abruptly.
"The demons are in full force because of him and that damned book. So tell me why or how he is going to help us."
"I don't know details, I only seen glimpses of what can come to pass."
He didn't respond, he simply stood and began angrily pacing back and forth. He stopped in front of the fire place, leaned against its mantle, shaking his head. Scoffing at him, she crossed her arms across her chest.
"I don't believe this. After recent events, your willing to allow him to return, to even live."
Kicking the blankets from her body, she got up. With as much grace as one could half naked, she went to him. Grabbing him by his shoulder to spin him around. Grabbing both sides of his face she made him look at her.
"Look at me damn it. If we lose this battle, we all die. I can't handle losing those I care about. I can't lose you. Do you not see that?"
Watching a tear slide down her cheek, he raised his hands as if he were to wipe it from her face. Instead he wrapped his hands around her small wrists. Slowly removing her hands from his face. He stared at her, as if he were seeing her again for the very first time.
"For the sake of our people and the salvation of the world. Just trust me."
Pulling her to him, burying his face in her tangled hair. "I do trust you. I pray that I won't regret allowing him to help. If he only brings us to Hell's doorstep, I will end him."
She couldn't argue with that, it was a compromise that had to be made. He would fight to no end if it meant protecting her and their people. Pulling away from him slightly before backing away to the bed to dress. Coming up behind her, he helped her slip into the dress. His warm hands drifting over her skin, til his hands rested on her hips. Placing soft kisses along her neck and up her jaw. Letting out sighs as knocking on the door caused him to remove himself. Shaking off the returning chill from the lack of his heat, she made her way to the bathroom to fix her knotted hair. When he returned, she had managed to tamed most of it.
"The creature is here. He is demanding he speak to you."
"One more thing before we go." Glancing at him through the mirror as she finished cleaning herself up.
He nodded, his hand in a tight fist at his side.
"We can't tell anyone of what happened to me. Not until we can find out what exactly is happening."
Like earlier her hand wondered just over her stomach, before she quickly brushed it off as her nerves. Opening his fist, she laced her fingers in his as they made there way to the tower to meet Adam. In the back of her mind, the vision of the little girl was slowly seeping into thoughts.
