Chapter 11: Escaping the Coven
Ten years passed, and Shadow learned how to control his bloodlust. Mephiles had grown interested in him, but the young vampire had rejected him. He was part of Mephiles' coven now, and had still not had the chance to kill the evil vampire. Shadow was in his room, holding a picture of him and Sonic smiling, looking at it when he was troubled. It was night and Shadow wanted to leave.
"Sonic, I miss you," he said to himself. "I need advice. I want to get away from here but Mephiles is keeping a close eye on me after all these years."
He thought of his friend and how he would act if he was in this situation. The vampire took the picture and hid it on his person, then he got to work on making a hole under his bed in order to escape. A few minutes later, he heard footsteps. Shadow cursed and turned around as Mephiles walked into his room.
"Hello, Shadow," the vampire leader said. "How are you doing?"
Shadow gulped. "I am well," he said.
Mephiles nodded. "Come; it is time to feed."
He left the room as Shadow followed him. The rest of the vampires were in the hall, and bowed before Mephiles. Shadow did this as well.
"Where is our target today, Master?" One vampire asked.
"The town, as usual," Mephiles said with an evil grin. "Come; the night awaits."
He concentrated and transformed into a gigantic black bat, then spread his wings and flapped them, flying into the air. Shadow and the other vampires did the same and followed him. They flew out of the castle, heading to the village of Transylvania in the distance. Shadow was the size of a normal bat, and loved being in his bat form. The feeling of flying was amazing, mostly because he loved the feeling of the wind rushing past him. He had a wolf form too, and liked that one also, but liked his bat form more.
Minutes later, they came to the village and landed in their normal forms. The people saw them and screamed, trying to escape. Shadow's fangs lengthened and he chuckled, then faded into mist and flew at the nearest person, reforming in his hedgehog form and biting the person on the neck, drinking his blood. The man screamed as he was drained. Once Shadow had his fill, he let go of the man, who was now dead, and looked around for more victims.
Mephiles was killing humans, but in a more brutal way than Shadow. The other vampires were having their fill of blood also, and were soon full. Shadow looked around at all the dead bodies and sighed, shaking his head. Mephiles walked up to him.
"What's wrong, Shadow?" He asked, putting an arm around the black hedgehog's shoulder.
Shadow shrugged. "It's nothing," he said, turning away.
"Tell me," Mephiles said. Shadow glared at him and pushed Mephiles away. The vampire leader glared at him. Shadow glared back and turned into a wolf and running off towards the castle. Mephiles growled and turned to the other vampires. "Follow him!" He exclaimed.
They nodded and flew into the air as a swarm of bats, then followed the black wolf. Mephiles growled, knowing that Shadow was up to no good. Once Shadow got back to the castle, he ran up to his room and turned back to normal. He sat on the bed and began to sob; he hated it here. All he wanted to do was escape but Mephiles kept him at the castle against his will. If he escaped, Mephiles would know. Shadow sighed, got off the bed, and continued to work on the hole under his bed.
It took Shadow five days to tunnel his way out of the castle. Shadow went in to the tunnel he made as Mephiles called him. As he crawled threw the tunnel he thought about what to do next. Eventually, he reached the end and ran off into the forest. As Mephiles went to Shadow's room, he looked around.
"Shadow?" He asked. "Where are you?"
"My Lord, what is wrong?" Amy asked.
Mephiles turned to her. "I have been searching for Shadow, but he is nowhere to be found. Look for him." Amy nodded and left. The lead vampire growled and tore Shadow's room apart. His eyes landed on the hole in the ground and widened. "Vampires!" He yelled, walking out of the room. "Shadow has escaped! Find him at once!"
The vampires nodded and vanished. Mephiles looked at the hole and growled. I will find you, Shadow, he thought. And when I do, you'll be sorry you ever escaped.
A grin formed on his face and he vanished also, leaving the castle empty.
