Chapter 12: Day In La Push

The next day the sun beamed into my window, and woke me. I yawned and slowly pulled myself out of bed. I followed my nose downstairs to the smell of breakfast.

"Hey dad," I said cheerfully and hugged him.

"Morning Bella," he said and kissed my forehead.

"You off today?" I asked.

"Yeah! My first day off in a long time," he told me with a smile as he turned back to the food he had cooking on the stove.

"Hannah eat bacon?" he called over his shoulder and asked. I smiled big at his thoughtfulness, and nodded. Hannah may be fit but she eats everything.

"What happened with your other friend?" he asked, lifting an eyebrow. "Rosali-," I began.

"Emmett's girlfriend?" Charlie interrupted.

"Yeah the one and only," I said blankly, "She was bullying Chala and Chala is a little hot headed, and was not having it."

"But Rose is such a nice girl," he protested with a furrow of his brows.

"If you only knew," I said with a roll of my eyes and took a swig of orange juice.

"Knew what?" he asked and looked at me curiously.

"Oh nothing," I said. He looked at me a moment longer, and slowly turned back to cooking, and didn't pester me about it. Hannah and Emmett slowly shuffled into the kitchen.

"Do I smell food?" Emmett said sleepily. I laughed at him and nodded. I explained to Hannah and my brother that Chief Swan finally got a day off work and was cooking us breakfast. Hannah smiled cheerfully, thanked him politely and pulled a chair out and sat down at the kitchen table.

"When is Chala coming back?" Emmett asked enthusiastically. Hannah and I both shot him a look.

"Next Thursday," Hannah replied dryly. Charlie looked at us questioningly. We chatted together until Charlie finished cooking. He finished and invited us to help ourselves to a plate. We all ate hungrily. I honestly had no idea my dad could cook. He smiled at me as if he knew what I was thinking.

"So what are you girls getting into today?" Charlie asked.

"We're going to La Push to see Jake and Billy," I told him. Hannah looked at me curiously. I realized this was the first time I had mentioned this to her.

Charlie nodded and smiled, "Billy would love to see you, and what are you doing Emmett?" Emmett informed us with a mouth full out food that he would be helping Rosalie catch up on her studies, because she had fallen so far behind after the little incident. I rolled my eyes.

"Well you kids have fun today. I'm spending time with Sue," he announced while washing the dishes. I lifted one of my eyebrows questioningly.

"Dad's girlfriend," Emmett said, answering my silent question, while childishly making kissing faces and noises. I gasped and looked at dad with a big smile.

Charlie face went red. "It is not that big of a deal."

I nodded with an audible "mhmm." We were all quiet as we finished eating. Hannah thanked my dad again and then we both retreated to our room. We both slowly began planning for the day. I walked in my closet and picked out a casual outfit while Hannah used the bathroom to take a quick shower. After she finished, I took a long hot relaxing shower. When I emerged from the steamy bathroom Hannah was dressed in a floral pink blouse, ripped boyfriend jeans, and black vans. I could tell today was a lazy day, because she had pulled her long curly hair into a big messy bun poised on top of her head. I quickly got ready, and we hopped in the car and drove to La Push. I blew the horn as we pulled into Billy's and Jake's yard. I opened the door and a breeze of cold air blew into the car.

"Wow it is chilly," I told Hannah.

"That's why I always have a sweater, " she said, and for the first time I noticed the black sweater laying across her lap. I looked in the backseat, and grab Demetri's varsity LDV jacket. I slid it on and stepped out of the car, and Jacob ran up and hugged me. He pulled back and scrunched his nose up in disgust.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

He looked at me curiously and shook his head, "Nothing."

Hannah closed the door and Jacob's head snapped around to look at her with a startling quickness.

"Um, hi," Hannah said, her eyes wide as she looked up at Jacob. Hannah was tall for a girl but Jacob was abnormally tall, period. He stared at her then greeted her politely and shook her hand and they introduced themselves to each other. I watched their interaction closely.

"Nice to meet you," he said, looking at her strangely.

"Likewise," she said, returning the strange look. What's up with them? I wondered.

"Come on, guys," Jacob said, grabbing my hand and pulling me across the small yard and into the house. "Billy will be so happy to see you."

I followed behind him. "I haven't seen him in years," I stated cheerfully as I walked through the front door.

"Dad! Look who stopped by," Jacob called. Billy rolled from the kitchen into the front room in his wheelchair. His face lit up and he yelled my name in surprise.

"Hey, Billy. It is so nice to see you. You look well," I said with a wide grin, leaning over and hugging him.

"Thanks, Bella. You look great. It is so nice to see you, too," He told me with a big smile.

"Thanks Billy. This is Hannah, my friend from Italy," I told him, as Hannah stepped forward to shake his hand.

"Beautiful, nice to meet you," Billy said and shook Hannah's hand. Hannah blushed.

"Thanks, Billy." Hannah said with a smile.

We all stood in the kitchen talking and enjoying each other's company for a while before Jacob suggested we go out to the shed.

We followed him and left Billy watching TV in the living room.

We were walked across the yard to Jacob's shed when a pack of tall, golden skinned boys who looked weirdly similar to Jacob come running out with agitated looks on their handsome faces. They all had dark hair and eyes, and were most likely all part of the Quileute tribe.

"I smell them! They crossed the border!" a guy with a sharp face said as he approached us.

"Paul," Jacob addressed him, "No they didn't. It's nothing."

"Who are they?" Hannah whispered to me.

Paul's head snapped towards us, noticing us for the first time. He sniffed at the air like a dog in search of something. He looked at me menacingly.

"You!" He growled.

"Paul, stop!"Jacob yelled, "She is not one of them."

"Paul!" Jacob snapped, grabbing his arm. "She smells like one but is not one!"

Jacob's strange proclamation didn't seem to help. Paul started to tremble violently, growing impossibly fuzzy around the edges with the speed of his tremors.

"Let's go!" Hannah said, quickly backing away and I followed suit.

"Paul, chill!" Several of the guys ordered.

"Vampires!" Paul yelled, and it came out garbled as if he was trying to speak around a mouthful of something. He lunged for us and I stumbled backwards, nearly screaming as suddenly there was a big brown wolf standing over me. I froze, wide eyed, as Hannah let out a blood-curdling scream and tripped trying to grab me.

"Bella!" Jacob yelled, and the next thing I knew he was a giant puffball of fur too. I nearly fainted. I could not believe my eyes. The two wolves began to circle each other with violent snarls and growls coming from their throats. I knew I needed to get the hell off the ground but I couldn't seem to move a limb. A couple of the other guys from the group ran over to us and hauled us to our feet.

"Get out of here fast!" One of them told us. I ran to my car with Hannah closely trailing. I felt a thump and looked back to see Jacob had pinned Paul down to the ground.

Hannah screamed as she reached the car, "Don't stop, come on!"

I ran, jumped in the car and quickly sped off.

"What the hell was that?" Hannah yelled breathlessly as we sped through La Push back to Forks.

"I don't know. Oh my god, Jake turned into a huge dog," I replied, not believing what I just saw. We rode in silence until we pulled up at my house. I didn't know who to talk to and tell about what just happened. I called Chala and put her on speaker.

"You will not believe the day we had." I started talking fast as soon as she answered the line.

"Well hello to you too," she said sarcastically.

I smiled weakly at her familiarity. "My best friend turn into a wolf! I think Jacob knows about vampires." I exclaimed.

"A wolf?!" She questioned.

"Hey give that back, Dad!" I heard her say before I could reply.

"What happened?" my Uncle Caius questioned angrily. I put him on speaker, and Hannah and I told him the story of today's events.

"That's it, you all are coming home," he told me stonily.

"But Uncle C!" I whined.

"Uncle, let's be reasonable. Just send the boys back with Chala," Hannah suggested.

"That's a PHENOMENAL idea!" I heard Chala piped up in agreeance.

"No, it is not. You ladies will not be focused on school," he told us and paused for a second as if contemplating. "I will talk to Aro and Marcus. We will send Heidi to watch over you."

Hannah and I smiled, "Perfect!"

"But until Heidi arrives, stay out of trouble and away from the Quileutes." He said in a very serious, warning tone.

"Yes sir!" Hannah and I said in agreement. I pictured him sighing and handling Chala back the phone. We chatted more, and she hung up because Auntie Dora was calling her. Hannah and I hung up the phone, and started to study and do homework for the week. After I finished, I was so tired. As I closed my eyes, all I could see was my best friend turning into a giant wolf.

Sorry for the long wait. I am really trying to finish. Enjoy. Please review, helps me move faster. xoxo Rose
