Chapter 9

The Human Chess Game

It was past 8pm when Alec felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He was taking a sip of his coffee in an attempt to calm himself after the nerve-wracking deciphering of code and mysteries he'd done a while ago. And, most of all, he'd decided to take a little break, as he knew he would be partaking in a human chess game sooner or later. He tried to ignore the vibration of his pocket as he thought of a strategy on how to confront Malcolm and Magnus without them actually suspecting him of his true motive or being insulted by what he was about to do. He really didn't want them to feel offended, as if he were accusing them of a crime wherein he didn't have any concrete evidence.

He didn't want to become as judgmental as the Clave.

The phone in his pocket let out a series of vibrations once again and Alec finally decided to just take the call. He could tell this might be important, seeing as the person on the other line was still trying to get in touch with him. With a defeated sigh, he picked out the phone from his pocket and finally answered the call.

"Hello?"

"Alec, brother! We're so sorry that we didn't come home right away. I mean, yeah, we already phoned you a while ago to tell you that Malcolm wants us to have coffee and catch up sometime with his childhood friend. But we honestly forgot the time because we were having a very nice chat. So, yeah, now it's 8pm. But don't worry! We'll head over to your apartment right away to give you the copy of the footage!" Alec heard Izzy's voice from the other line as she explained things to him. He could sense the sincerity of Izzy's voice on behalf of the group. He even bet they were having faint looks on their faces now as they were trying hard to find a way to make up with him.

"Really, it's okay, Izzy. You don't need to worry about that. I understand. We're the ones who put Malcolm in a dangerous situation, so it's only appropriate to grant his little wishes. And besides, I know Malcolm. Despite his childhood friend blackmailing him, he was dying to get time with Magnus. I bet Magnus felt the same way, too. And, lastly, we all deserve to take a break from all of this. You guys have been so worked up for the past few days. A few hours of relaxation won't kill us." 'And besides, I would like to apologize because all of your efforts might be in vain. And maybe, just maybe, the Downworlders are also having the time of their lives, for now,' Alec added in his mind, but he didn't dare to voice this to his sister.

"So, don't worry, really. I'm also taking a break here, in fact I'm drinking my coffee now. The mystery note I solved earlier completely tired me out. As for Clary, well, she's in the study also taking a break. Maybe she's texting Jace." 'Well, after I asked that favor of her, there's no doubt she's taking a break. My task utterly drained and tested her artistic skills,' Alec thought as he made a sound of slurping and drinking his coffee to assure his sister. Then a series of sighs of relief were heard from the other line and he smiled, knowing that his friends were convinced of his actions.

"Oh, thank God you're not angry! I love you, Brother! And don't worry, in 30 minutes we'll be coming home. Actually, I really called because I would like to ask you and Clary what you want for dinner. We could buy you some take out, brother." Alec went to the study and asked Clary what she wanted for dinner.

"Oh, now that sounds good. I would like one Hawaiian and one beef with mushroom pizza for the both of us." Alec smirked as he heard his sister scowl and make a noise of disgust from the other end of the phone.

"Really? Alec? You still want a pizza with fucking pineapple on it?"

"What's wrong with it? It's delicious! And you're not going to eat it, I am!" Alec defended himself, as he knew Izzy would pry and tease him for his weird taste for pineapple. He heard another huff from the other line and Alec rolled his eyes, knowing Izzy was doing the same thing. But thankfully Izzy conceded and decided not to argue with him.

"Alright, beef with mushroom for Clary and Hawaiian for you, coming right up! Goodbye! See you in a few-"Just when Izzy was about to hang up, Alec quickly interrupted her as an idea formed in his mind.

"Izzy, wait!" Alec shrieked into the phone, making his sister hiss in pain at the sharpness of his voice.

"Jesus, Alec. I'm still here. I can hear you perfectly fine."

"Oh. I'm sorry, Iz. But, is- is Malcolm still there?" He tried to sound nonchalant about it, but deep inside he was silently praying that Malcolm was still there.

"Yes. In fact, he's still chatting with Magnus. You know what, Alec, it's really weird seeing Malcolm so carefree. I mean all this time he's been tense, uptight and too serious about everything. Plus our meeting in the afternoon wasn't really pleasant. But after all of that drama and us heading off to the coffee shop, the tension quickly evaporated and we were surprised to see another side of Malcolm," Izzy explained and Alec could sense both the delight and amusement in her voice.

"I see. Well, I guess that's a good thing. I bet everyone shows their carefree and true self with the people they're comfortable hanging out with." Izzy agreed with Alec's statement at the other line.

"Indeed! Ah, by the way, why were you asking about Malcolm?"

"Ah. I'd like to meet him. I mean, yeah, on behalf of the group, I'd like to explain everything to him. I know that you guys bombarded and threatened him enough to agree to our deal. I know how aggressive you guys are when attacking your prey. Not to mention I know Magnus was also playing his own card. So, on behalf of everyone, I'd like to apologize and explain it all to him."

"You're so mean! Really, Alec! You have such little faith in us! We're not brats!" Izzy shrieked as she raised her voice in an attempt to sound like her ego had been hurt, but Alec rolled his eyes since he knew her sister was just being a drama queen again.

"Oh shut it! Anyway, can you ask Malcolm if he could come over to my apartment for a while?" Izzy gasped in shock as the other line was filled with eerie silence. Alec wondered if the other line was cut off. He was about to speak to confirm if everything was okay when Izzy suddenly yelled.

"Hey Malcolm! Alec was asking if you're available for the night! Apparently, Alec might want to have a threesome!" Alec's cheeks were suddenly painted with a beet red blush as he uttered curses under his breath at the prank his little sister had pulled. Alec could hear simultaneous laughter and whistling from the other line as they digested what Izzy had announced. Just then Alec heard a light click and instantly knew he was on a bloody loudspeaker.

"God damn it, Izzy! That's not what I mean! You better clarify that, you little devil!" Alec hissed in annoyance as he hear simultaneous chuckles from the other line.

Alec suddenly heard Jace's mocking voice from the other line. "My, my, my. Alec! Since when did you learn to curse, my loving parabatai?"

"Since the situation bloody required it, Jace."

"Alec, darling, you wound me. Am I not good enough for you? I have one hell of a piece of hot ass here that I'm sure will have you moaning and writhing in ecstasy. Why do you need to call Malcolm to spice up your night?" This time it was Magnus' silky smooth voice he heard from the other line and Alec couldn't take it anymore, groaning in embarrassment.

"Oh, God! Magnus! Not you too!" Alec cried, knowing that if anything had made contact with his face right then, it would've burnt up immediately. His cheeks were very hot from the embarrassment he'd just been dealt, and the people on the other line didn't even care. They just laughed, seemingly amused by Alec's embarrassment.

"Haha. Okay, okay enough of that. We know that Iz was just joking. Sorry, darling. I was just joking, too. I just want to ease the tension here since everybody was so worked up with the latest, er, you know, happenings," Magnus said and Alec's embarrassment instantly faded into a more serious mood.

'Yes. We really do need to loosen up. It'll be a tense night for us, later.' Alec's instincts suddenly chipped in in his mind.

"Yeah, I know," Alec replied simply as he shrugged and went back to sipping his coffee.

"So, Blue Eyes. What's the reason you wanted to speak with Malcolm?" Magnus asked as he stood up and drew closer to Izzy's phone. Alec repeated the reason he'd given Izzy a while ago. Magnus was nodding the whole time Alec was explaining to him and finally, Magnus asked Malcolm if he was available to head over to Alec's apartment tonight.

"Uh, sure. I don't think it'll kill me to spend a little time at his apartment," Alec heard Malcolm reply nonchalantly on the other line as his instincts grinned in victory.

'They finally took the bait.'

30 minutes later, Alec heard a series of knocks on his door while he was organizing the documents he'd collected and examined a while ago. He set his laptop on the couch as he stood up and headed towards the door. When he opened it, the smell of hot pizza made his stomach grumble as Izzy waved it ever so slightly before his nose.

"Good evening, Alec!" Alec's group greeted with grins on their faces. Alec stepped aside to let them into his apartment. The group immediately crashed inside, running through the dining room and opening the pizza. They grabbed a handful of bites while Alec, Malcolm and Magnus were still by the front door. Normally, Alec would scold them for their behaviour, but he found himself not caring. He knew it was kind of a tradition of theirs. Even though they'd say they'd bring Alec some takeout food, they would order extra pizzas for themselves.

Alec stared at the two men outside his door. Magnus smiled and leaned closer to him, kissing him on the cheek he wrapped his arms around Alec's lithe waist. Alec blushed at the intimate actions of the man before him.

He knew they didn't have a proper status or label yet to be able to act this way, but sometimes Alec couldn't stop Magnus from doing this to him. Not because Magnus was too damn strong, intimidating and seductive, but because his warmth somehow provided him with comfort. Like no matter what happened in this world, there would be a place of comfort and warmth for him.

'Until your suspicions go up," his instincts suddenly butted in and he mentally groaned for being such a killjoy. He heard someone clear his throat and he lifted his head to see Malcolm blushing faintly at their bold actions. Just then, Alec pushed Magnus in order to create a small distance between them. The latter only chuckled when he saw the two faint blushes coming from both the other men.

"Aw. Don't be like that, Darling. Don't worry, Malcolm isn't a homophobic bastard and if he is, I'll make sure to kick his ass so he'll respect us." Now this made Malcolm scoff and roll his eyes at the fondness of his boss.

"Well, I guess let's get down to business? Can I come in, Alec?" Malcolm asked as his gaze met Alec's. Alec tried to read his eyes but all he could see was a pair of purple eyes staring back at him.

"Of course you can. Let's just head upstairs so we won't be disturbing them while we talk."

The three of them had just started to pass through the first floor when Izzy suddenly called Alec, forcing all three of them to stop in their tracks.

"Alec, won't you join us in here?" Clary called as she took small bites of her favorite beef and mushroom pizza.

"Uh, I think I'll just catch up later. Actually, I'm a little full from the coffee I had earlier. Plus, it's starting to get late. I don't want to keep our guests waiting. I wanted to clarify some things with them about what happened in the Silent City. Izzy, you can put the copy of the footage on my laptop while we're talking upstairs."

"Will do, Alec," Clary replied shyly as Jace massaged her hair and hugged her from behind.

"Okay. If you're already tired, you can take my guest rooms and sleep there." Alec nodded and the group turned to face the table once again as they continued to eat their pizza while Alec led Magnus and Malcolm to one of his soundproof investigation rooms and let them in. Once Alec had safely locked the door, he turned around and faced the two men in front of him. But, this time, he wasn't in his usual self anymore.

His inner instincts had resurfaced to interrogate them.

"So, what do we have in here, Alec Lightwood?" Malcolm inquired as he sat down on one of the chairs while Magnus moved towards Alec and joined him in seating on the couch. Alec leaned forward as he gave the first four photographs they'd gathered from the Downworlders' attack on Los Angeles and the most recent ones from the silent city another glance over. He asked Malcolm to interpret and decode the mysterious notes while watching his reaction. And, as expected, they reached the same conclusion.

"I see. It seems Magnus really was right. Your deductive skills are pretty impressive. It's no wonder you became an elite Shadowhunter, Mr. Fade."

"Thank you, Alec Lightwood. You're very talented as well, seeing as how you deciphered it in just, what? A day? That's pretty awesome." Malcolm smiled as he tried to please the young man in front of him. Alec only nodded in affirmation. He suddenly stood up and walked to the side as he leaned on the wall, making the two men turn their heads to look at him.

"Now, I want to ask you two something. What do you think the last lines of the mysterious notes mean, when they started writing this P.S?" As soon as the words left Alec's lips, Malcolm and Magnus shared a quick knowing look that, fortunately, Alec didn't notice.

Malcolm kept his gaze on Alec as he let his eyes roam around his chest, searching for the mafia's crest. And he wasn't disappointed. The Donna's crest, the Clockwork Angel, hung on his neck.

"What a fine necklace you have in there," Malcolm commented as he smirked knowingly. Alec was momentarily caught off guard, obviously not having expected his sudden compliment.

"Err, thank you. It was a gift from myparabatai." Malcolm couldn't help but chuckle at his comment.

"Parabatai, huh? Anyway, what was your question a while ago?"

"How would you interpret this Donna thing, as well as the last line? Because I have a feeling, it will reveal our next clue. As shadowhunters, we must decipher everything."

"Of course. The Donna pertains to a shadowhunter. It's a pseudonym of a certain shadowhunter, who was apparently a spy in the Clave." Malcolm stared intently at Alec, observing his reaction. He knew he was taking a bold risk, he had just implied to their enemy that there was a spy in the Clave.

'Wrong move.' Alec thought as he mentally smirked at Malcolm's admission. He knew his enemy had just made a risky move. And apparently it acted as a trigger as Alec finally decided to take another risk himself.

'One can't be successful and get what they want without taking risks,' Alec thought.

"No. That's where you're wrong Malcolm. It seems you didn't fully decipher the whole note yet." This time Magnus' curiosity was finally piqued as he raised his eyebrows and both of them gave Alec questioning looks.

"So what's the full note all about, Alec Lightwood?"

"First off, a Donna is a title. The Donna bears a high rank in the Mafia's world. Or maybe, just as what you said. This Donna might be the mole in the Clave. And, the note doesn't end there." Alec grabbed a piece of paper from his pocket and put it on the table. It was a piece of note where the handwriting was too similar. As if it was a part of the mysterious note.

The Silent City's secret gate has a three-phase locking system. The first phase is composed of an ordinary gate with a key. The second phase of the security system projects a virtual screen to key in the required security code for access. The third and final phase of the security system is a list of high profile authorities who have been granted permission to enter by the Clave. Their faces and biometrics are recorded in the central database for the program's basis to finally grant the trespasser access or not.

The last phase of the security system is strictly confidential information. Only the lists of grantors know of the last phase of the locking system.

'That's fake!' All three of them concluded mentally as their minds went haywire.

'It was not included in the note Magnus gave to me! And how did he get that information? I made sure no one could pull it from the Central database, except for the ones who were given access to the locking code. And who the fuck imitated my calligraphy? Wait, I think I have a feeling of who it was. Damn it, Malcolm! Stay Calm!' Malcolm repeated those words in his head like a mantra as he tried desperately to compose himself. He shouldn't let his enemy know his weak point. And so he lifted his head and stared back at Alec with a deathly calm, stoic expression.

Magnus, on the other hand, was just smirking the whole time, seeming all too amused by this situation. 'My, my. My dear Alexander. You really keep things interesting, little one. It's too obvious that the note is fake. I formulated the whole mystery note myself and I didn't write that one. I bet Malcolm is now panicking, thinking his information has been breached. But, it's okay. It's exactly what I've been waiting for.'

'Come on! Give me the reaction that I wanted! It's a great risk for me to expose this kind of information straight into the hands of potential enemies. What's your next move? Malcolm? Magnus?' Alec thought as his mind wandered back to the scene a while ago. The things he had to go through just to pull this move. He specifically asked Clary to imitate Malcolm's calligraphy to make the note and edit another copy of their documents to include this 'hidden note' at the crime scene.

The room was filled with eerie silence and heavy tension until Malcolm suddenly spoke up.

"I know of that information. It's some of the highly classified information the Clave has kept as a top secret. Only the Consul, Inquisitor, Silent Brothers and other selected high rank officials knew of it. It's interesting how you managed to get this one, eh? Alec?" Malcolm countered back as Alec gulped at this possibility. He knew this attack could also backfire at him, but he was nothing but prepared for that.

"I have my resources, Mr. Fade. Now, what if I tell you guys, that I know, or I have a suspect in whom the Downworlders are?"

"Oh? Indulge us, Alexander Lightwood," Malcolm challenged, interested in what was going through Alec's mind and not caring if he was already risking exposing himself far too much.

"The one who signed these notes clearly has access to the three-phase locking system of the Clave and is very good at Calligraphy, since he used a complicated writing style without worrying about his handprints. In fact, his work was so perfect there was not a trace of evidence found. Now-"Alec lifted his head and met Malcolm's eyes intently before he uttered his next statement, the one that would change the course of this night.

"I wonder who the high-ranking officials are that would have access to the Silent City and are very good at Calligraphy."

"Oh. Now I see the whole point of this meeting. You want me to investigate these high-ranking officials and lure out the mole, right?" Malcolm countered as he studied Alec's next move. If he thought he would freak out just because of this discovery, that's where he was wrong. He would turn it to their advantage whether Alec liked it or not.

"Yes. That's exactly what we meant by asking you for a favor. With Magnus' help, of course." Alec met Magnus' gaze as he also read his reaction. But Magnus' expression was as plain as a blank sheet of paper. He certainly didn't like his opponent's move. He'd gained almost nothing out of this conversation. But he had a feeling that the more closely he worked with this enemy, the easier it would become for him to learn the truth.

'I'm done. You take over here.' Alec's instincts said as he found himself coming back to his normal, non-detective mode once again.

"You have some interesting information here. Plus Magnus blackmailed me into lending you a hand. So, don't worry. Once I started digging and find some information, I'll give it to you right away. You're really a genius, Alec," Malcolm said as he stood up and extend his hand toward Alec. The latter took it as they shook hands for this new 'alliance'.

"Thank you, Malcolm. It was nice playing this Shadowhunter game with you."

"Likewise. But I guess there's someone here whose head was spinning like crazy," Malcolm said as he stared back at his boss and gave him a mafia code look.

"Shut it, Malcolm! Yeah, I admit you're all too genius but you didn't have to spell it out for me, man! Anyway, it's getting late and I will be needing my beauty rest. I think it's about time to call it a day. Goodnight, Blue Eyes. I'll see you tomorrow. And please, dream of me, baby," Magnus said as he leaned in to kiss Alec's cheeks, causing the latter to blush. Magnus gave him a genuine smile as he stared at him before Malcolm spoke once again.

"Oh, please don't you get all cheesy and lovey dovey in front of me!"

"You're just jealous you aren't getting any, Malcolm," Magnus teased as he smirked and kissed Alec's forehead again to provoke his friend. He then moved away from Alec to walk Malcolm back home.

"Urgh! That's it! I'm going home. But Alec, I want to tell you something. Be careful with the sensitive information you have. The mole might use it against you," were Malcolm's last words as the door closed behind him.

"Of course," Alec thought out loud as he finally released the breath he was holding and sat back down on the couch. He got his laptop from his side and smiled when the program he'd run successfully gave him the output he wanted.

System Crawling: Complete

Firewall Status: 100%

'That's fantastic, Alec.' Alec's inner side butted in as he resisted the urge to roll his eyes.

''Fantastic' your face. Do you have any idea what danger we're in right now? You just blatantly told the enemy that we have our own program running to gather the confidential and secret information from all across the internet. You just revealed to our enemy our secret weapon. And now I'm thinking they wanted to slit my throat because you accused them of being a Downworlder right in front of their face!'

'Relax, Alec. We're fully prepared for that. That's why you coded and ran that program, isn't it? To interfere and block them in case they attempted to run a script or program to track and destroy yours. And I'm sure they won't kill you. No matter how much they wanted to.'

'And why is that? How can you be so sure?'

'Well, it's because it would raise suspicion. The last people you talked to were them. If someone kills you, your friends will suspect Magnus and Malcolm. And besides, they're the only ones who knew the truth about the confrontation. If you died, the program we ran would activate and the video of the conversation would be released worldwide. That would make them prime suspects in your death.'

Alec shook his head, finding the whole situation far too dangerous and critical. He knew his enemies wouldn't give up without a fight. And no matter how much he wanted for the truth to come out soon, he couldn't do that.

For now, the only thing he could do is head out Wisconsin and know the Downworlder's next move.

When Magnus and Malcolm returned to Edom, Malcolm immediately sat on this throne as he clenched his fists in his hair at the horrible situation he suddenly found himself in.

"Damn it! He nearly got me there! This is all your fault, Magnus! Now he suspects the both of us! Especially me! Are you really planning on exposing us to them? We'll be doomed to fail in our plan if this continues!" Malcolm shrieked in horror, staring back at his boss who simply sat idly on his throne with a cup of wine in his hand.

"Relax, Malcolm. It went exactly how I wanted it to. Finally, he revealed himself to me."

"Wha- what do you mean?"

"I know that besides the help I gave him in deciphering the code, he still has many tricks up his sleeves. I want to know his abilities and talents. I want to know how he thinks, how much information he already knows. And he didn't fail me."

"But to get that information out of him, we're exposing ourselves to danger!"

"Malcolm, my dear fellow warlock. One can't be successful and get what they want without taking a risk. Yes, we exposed ourselves to him. But he also did the same. By giving us that fake note, he blatantly said that he has resources, he has his own way of discovering things. And you know what that means?" Just then Malcolm's eyes widened as realization dawned on him. Magnus grinned in return as, finally, they arrived on the same page.

"Yes, Malcolm. It means he has his own written program that he can use to access secret information without getting tracked. And that, my friend, is your next job. Destroy that almighty program of his. Now, I suggest you start tracking it before he thinks of creating a program to block your script-" Magnus said but Malcolm paid him no mind as he immediately moved to grab his laptop and started to trace Alec's program. But, before his program could finish processing his request, his laptop switched to a black screen of death with a very familiar voice looming in.

"To the Downworlders,

If you managed to access this message, then I suspect you already did your part to block my program. My forces were prepared for this kind of worst-case scenario. I suggest you stop what you're doing right now and stop blocking my program. If you don't, you'll get a taste of your own medicine."

The audio stopped as two letters appeared on the screen.

-AL

"Fuck!" Malcolm screeched as he slammed his hands on the armrest of his throne. Rage and anger was written all over his face.

"Fantastic! My Donna is one smart cookie!" Magnus screamed in delight as he raised his wine as if having a toast with Malcolm. He then wore a wicked smile as he took a sip on his wine.

"I want to kill that bastard!" Malcolm yelled as he clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. He could feel his jaw beginning to ache from the anger that rose in him. His vision was clouded with red and he desperately wanted to slit Alec's throat and see him bathed in his own blood.

"I'm afraid you can't do that Malcolm. For one, he's our Donna. And Alec's friends and the world would suspect us if we killed him right away. Seeing as we're the only ones who knew the whole truth. And I know he already set a trap for if we ever decided to get rid of him."

"His damn last line. Tsk," Malcolm replied as a realization dawned on him that made Magnus smirk.

"Bingo. It means the conversation earlier was taped. It'll be televised around the world, making us the primary suspects."

"Shit! Fuck you, Magnus! Now we're doomed! You know how much I hated to move when I am trapped! I prefer to move my pawns and trapped my victim in my safe zone!"

"Relax, Malcolm. Where's the fun if you won't join the battlefield and just throw your attack from the sideline? And actually, we're not. The game and war has just started. We're all even in this game. We'd moved our pawns, risking our different plans in an attempt to get the checkmate and see who will fall for the trap first. Now we know how smart our opponent is. But Alec still has a long way to go. And I will win in this game. We will win this and conquer the world." Just then a warlock member came in and handed a report to Magnus. Magnus read Jordan and Raphael's report and smiled at Malcolm in satisfaction.

"Read this." Magnus said as he threw the paper in Malcolm's direction. Thankfully, Malcolm was able to catch it and in an instant his mood lightened up with the good news he'd read from the report.

"My, my. Phase 1 was successful."

"Indeed. Now, don't worry about everything. We'll stick to the plan and continue making the program and writing all of the notes I prepared for phase 2. Keep the Downworlders moving. I'll deal with Alec myself. I already have a grand plan prepared especially for him." When Malcolm didn't say anything, Magnus continued.

"During our attack on Wisconsin, I'll make sure his suspicions about us will finally be lifted up. I'll get his full trust and dig out all of the information he kept up his sleeves. And at the end of this labyrinth, they will realize the true horror of our grand plan."

A/N:

And that, my friend, is my version of the notorious criminal, Yagami Light and the famous detective, L Lawliet's confrontation from the anime Death Note! Well, I know it's not that great compared to the original version, but that's the point. I twisted that version to fit in my own plot, so I hope I still give justice to it!

Death Note is just one of the many animes I've been basing my inspiration in writing this one. If you're watching Code Geass, Shinjeki no Kyojin, Gundam Seed/Destiny, those anime will give you some hints or at least an idea of what will happen to this story :D (Spoiler alert). It has so many twist and turns as we go all the way.

I can feel the tension is finally building! Every player already moved their pawns! But what will happen next? What will happen in Wisconsin? Why is Phase 1 successful? What do you think after you've heard Magnus' thoughts?

Ever wondered why I didn't have a chapter teaser for the next chapter, when I normally give one? Go to my fanfic profile and read to know the real reason behind it.

Review if you feel like to.

Until Then!
