December

"Unusual to see people in a park in winter," A blond spoke to the girl on the swing. She was wearing a purple jacket, her green hair tucked in a scarf. She looked about his age, sixteen.

"I could tell you the same thing," She replied back, now looking directly at the other boy who took the swing next to her.

He grinned and started to swing slightly. "Do you come here often?"

He saw that she was resisting to roll her eyes, her lips were twitching upwards. "No. Not really."

"Well, I come here sometimes." The swing was creaking slightly. "Why are you here today?"

The small smile that the girl sported was now gone, "I didn't feel like going to a party."

"Party?" The boy asked, he stopped swinging.

"After-funeral party."

"Oh." The boy focused on the snow on the ground. Empty words like 'I'm sorry' were useless. "For who?"

"My sister." The girl was now looking straight ahead, no emotion in her voice. He was going to apologize for bringing such a thing up, but she turned around and just smiled. "But it's okay."

"I'm sorry for bringing it up."

The girl shook her head. "No, it's okay. What about you? Why are you visiting the park?"

"I like this park. Especially without a lot of people, you can think clearly." He replied, swinging again. "My name is Kano Shuuya."

The girl also began to swing, "Kido Tsubomi."

"Kido. Like that rich family with a mansion by the road?"

Kido sighed, but nodded. Sensing discomfort, Kano steered away from that topic. "Tsubomi," He tested her name in his mouth. "Tsubomi. Can I call you that?"

She nodded, the small smile appearing again. "Okay, Tsubomi." He said.

"Shuuya." She said back.

There was a comfortable silence between the two, just swinging back and forth with light snow falling. They don't know how many minutes they were there, but as Tsubomi noticed the sky was visibly darker she got up. "I have to go now, Shuuya."

Shuuya got up as well. "Okay, will I see you tomorrow, Tsubomi?"

Her eyes widened, she didn't think of meeting the boy again. But she nodded.

He smiled, "See you later, Tsubomi!"

"You're here!" Shuuya shouted, spotting Tsubomi walking to the swings.

The girl nodded, wearing the same coat, same scarf. "Why don't you cover up some more? It's pretty cold."

Shuuya shrugged, "I don't have a lot of things. This is the thickest clothing I have." He patted his black jacket.

Tsubomi faced the other way, but took off her scarf. "Here, you need it more than I do."

He shook his head, "I couldn't-"

"Whatever." Tusbomi said and wrapped the scarf around him.

"Should we walk today, instead of going by the swings? For the past week, that's all we've done. Talk and swing."

"Walk where?" Tsubomi asked. The two had met up by the swings for a week already, getting to know each other. They both knew the deep stuff about each other, like their favorite color and bands.

"Around, have you ever ate street food?" Shuuya asked through the scarf Tsubomi had given him, as they began to walk out of the park. Tsubomi shook her head.

He stood in shock, took her hand and looked her dead in the eye. "Let's go."

And then started to run, dragging Tsubomi by the wrist. "What?" She screamed.

"Consider this our first date!"

"So, did you like our 'date' yesterday?" Shuuya had asked her the day after.

Tsubomi was red in the face, but nodded. Shuuya took that as a boost of confidence and grinned. "So, Tsubomi. Does that mean were dating now?"

Tsubomi, still red, said nothing. They were both walking to the swings. "Whatever, Shuuya."

Shuuya took that as a 'yes'.

It had been two weeks already, Tsubomi had brought Shuuya a watch. It had a gold accent, she hoped Shuuya liked it. She saw him by the swings like they had. "Shuuya!" She shouted and sped her pace to meet the blond. He grinned and waved his arms. Once she had reached him, she shoved the red box in his hands.

"Here, it's a gift!" Shuuya had arched an eyebrow, but opened it. He grinned when he saw the gift.

"Aww! Thank you, Tsubomi!" He had slipped the watch on and hugged the girl. Tsubomi had blushed, but she wrapped her arms around Shuuya as well.

The next day, Shuuya had brought Tsubomi a gift. It wasn't actually a gift, he wasn't really sure. He was neighbors with a boy names Kousuke, who was only nineteen and already engaged to a girl named Mary. He had stopped by, wondering what kind of flowers to give to Tsubomi.

He wanted to make a joke and give her a bunch of flower buds, but Mary had scolded him and arranged a bouquet with flowers with a bunch of different meanings that Shuuya wanted to say to Tsubomi.

When he saw Tsubomi walk up to him, he smiled instantly. He always felt the need to smile when he was around her. "Tusbomi!" He nudged his hands toward him, signaling her to come over faster. She complied.

He gave her the bouquet, enjoying the flustered look on her face. "The purple-ish flowers are Campanulas, meaning 'thank you.'" He began to explain, pointing at the different flowers. "The Gardenia means 'joy.'" He began to flush furiously as he pointed at the last flower, Lilacs. "Those are Lilacs, they mean… T-they mean-"

"First love," Tsubomi whispered, just as red as he was.

The third week of December, Tsubomi had called Shuuya to meet at the park. She really needed him to be there. She had something very important to tell him.

Tsubomi was there, waiting for the blond boy to be there. He had appeared, with a worried expression on his face. She had stood up, and told him straight out. "I only have a week to live."

Tsubomi was chronologically ill, she had figured that out soon after her sister's death. But the doctor's didn't tell her how long she might be able to live until the day before. She explained everything to Shuuya as he stammered and questioned her.

They were sitting on the swings again, with the usual comforting silence. She flinched when Shuuya had moved and looked her straight in the eye. "We are going to make you have the best life ever." And he grabbed her wrist.

She didn't even question where they were going, she was used to Shuuya dragging her around. But it was quiet this time, with a cold air surrounding them rather than the light, happy aura that usually did.

He had taken her to the mall. She had never been into a mall before. But he pulled her over to a frozen yogurt shop and asked one of everything. They had eaten ice cream of every flavor, ate all the sweets the store had to offer. "You have to eat everything!" He had exclaimed as they visited a bunch of other stores

As they traveled, he was telling her to listen to all kinds of music and wear all different kinds of clothes – after all, you only live once, he had joked, trying to forget about Tsubomi dying.

They were walking back home, and Shuuya had stolen both of their first kiss on her doorstep.

They might or might have not had shoplifted as well.

The second day, Shuuya had called her early in the morning to take a run. She was wearing leggings and sweater, she sneaked out of her hosue. He was there waiting for her, smiling. And they had jogged twice around the park. And they had a picnic.

He had tried to throw grapes in her mouth, and she couldn't catch any – not like he could catch any either. Exhausted, Tsubomi had lay her head down on Shuuya's lap. Shuuya had also collapsed, they laid down there for about an hour.

They had watched a movie next. They sat at the back of the theater, Shuuya insisting after he had heard she had never been to a theater before. Shuuya had tried to make Tsubomi as comfortable as possible, her head rested by his shoulder, her legs on his lap. Halfway the movie, they were snogging.

After the movie, both of them panting and red in the face, he had taken her star-gazing at the top of his house. Her head was on her chest, hearing his heartbeat. His arm was around her shoulders, playing with her soft green hair. They don't know what time they had fallen asleep, but they both lay down there until morning.

The next day, when they had woken up to the sun, he had introduced her to Kousuke and Mary. ("This is your girlfriend, Shuuya?" "Yup!" "Ah! Nico to meet you Tsubomi-chan, Shuuya-san had told us all about you!" "J-just Tsubomi is fine.") They were delighted to meet each other, but Shuuya had dragged her away to go horse-back riding and fishing. Surprising Shuuya, Tsubomi knew how to do both.

He had then taken her to go eat some fast food, surprising Shuuya that she had not tried fast food. He had tried to get her to eat French fries and a hamburger, after she had complained how 'greasy' it was.

When Tsubomi returned home, she was grounded for not telling her parents she was out. Shuuya had snuck her out in the middle of the night though, to paint graffiti at an abandoned building.

"Here," He tossed her a red spray can. He grabbed his blue one and started to paint recklessly with abandon. Seeing Tsubomi wasn't doing anything, he grabbed her and flicked some paint on her face from the orange can of paint next to them.

Red in the face, she sprayed back.

They were back at his house, around six in the morning. "So, I have a friend named Shintaro." Shuuya began, as Tsubomi was making them breakfast. "And today, we are going smoke and drink."

Tsubomi stopped cooking, and glared at him. "Shuuya!"

"Hey!" He protested. "You have to! Then we'll go to a club and crash at my house." Waving his eyebrows in a suggestive manner. "We have to experience all this!"

Tsubomi was red. "We could get caught." She muttered.

"That's the fun!"

After breakfast, he had brought her to 'Shintaro's' who apparently had an idol as a sister and was pretty rich.

"Here." He handed them both a beer.

Shuuya grinned, "Thanks!" And clashed his and Tsubomi's glass together, muttering 'cheers'. She had gulped down the beer, it left a burning sensation down her throat. But she itched for more.

After about three different alcohol drinks later, Shintaro had drove them to a club. Shintaro was friends with the owners, who let them in. "I would say 'don't do drugs' or some shit," The owner had begun. "But I don't want to ruin your fun. I'm Takane by the way, just shout whenever you need me."

They were dancing for hours. Shuuya had dragged Tsubomi to the dance floor after a couple of drinks despite her protests. Shuuya had a surprising high tolerance for alcohol, making Tusobmi wonder if he did this often. Tsubomi just took sips, trying to taste everything.

Shuuya had his hands on Tsubomi's waist, trying to keep eye contact with Tsubomi. Tsubomi was laughing and grinning, probably due to the effects of alcohol.

Shuuya had kisses her then, because she looked beautiful. Her hair everywhere, her cheeks pink, her laugh was adorable and her eyes were smiling.

They woke up the next morning with a massive headache. They were at Shuuya's house, in his room specifically. Shuuya had woken up first, realizing he was naked and remembered that he had just made love with the woman he loved. He hugged Tsubomi's bare waist, his legs wrapped around her bare ones. He contemplated whether he should take a picture that he got laid, but he hugged her and buried his head in the crook of his neck.

After Tsubomi waking up and explaining ("We did what?!"), the two had taken a shower. Shuuya had given her his smallest clothes, but it was still too large on her – even if she was taller.

He agreed to take her back to her house, but they had to go get something first. She rolled eyes, asking what he needed to get. He replied by saying he had the right to remain quiet.

They reached a jewelry store around ten in the morning, only an old man tending the shop then.

"Hello?" He asks, eyeing the two (mostly Shuuya) carefully.

But Shuuya didn't really care and dragged Tsubomi, "Could I get the package for Kano Shuuya, please?"

"Oh, so you're the gentleman on the phone? Of course!"

Tsubomi didn't follow the conversation, too tired and confused to try to follow it. But when Shuuya was done talking, he draged her out of the store. Tsubomi didn't ask, she just followed. She stopped trying to figure out what her boyfriend was up to a long time ago. Shuuya had dragged her to the park always go to, snow falling.

"Kido Tsubomi," Shuuya said, looking her dead in the eye. She tried to avert his eyes, her face burning, but she can't. She looks at him back, and she realizes that he is just wonderful. "Will you marry me?"

Despite the tension, she laughed. "What, Shuuya? We're just sixteen!"

"We are just sixteen," He arched an eyebrow at her. He's suddenly not that kid who decided to talk to her at the park. "And, I can't bring myself to say it, but you're leaving me soon."

Tsubomi gulped, she was pale. They haven't talked about her illness at all. She wasn't red. She wasn't laughing like it was a joke anymore. She took the ring he's been holding, and put it on her ring finger. "Y-yeah."

He smiled and brought his hand to put the other ring on, but Tsubomi grabbed his hand and put it on him instead. He then took her hand in his – and Tsubomi notices it's sweating. She griped his hand firmly, trying to soothe him.

Soon they're by the Kido Mansion. They're at the end. Shuuya licked his lips, shifted his weight from side to side, bit the inside of his cheek. He wasn't prepared for this. "Tsubomi Kido," He began, feeling his eyes sting and his hands tremble. "You are the most amazing person I have ever met in my life. I-I love you so much."

As soon as the last four words are out, they could hear Tsubomi's parents running out of the house. "I love you so, so much." Tsubomi says before her parents could get any closer and grabs his collar. Then she kisses him right there – in front of her parents.

In a blur, her parents had dragged her away, her dad had punched Shuuya. Tsubomi and Shuuya scream, shouting 'I love you's' across the gate until they no longer heard each other.

Shuuya is left kneeling on the ground, a bruised cheek, tear-filled eyes, and a broken heart.

Shuuya passed by the next day. Nothing is different, it's still the aristocratic house that he passed by on his way to school before.

The next day, it's the same thing.

The third day he passed by, it has happened. Kido Tsubomi had died. Shuuya bit the inside of his cheek, he was trying not to scream. Following the funeral in silence, Shuuya silently wept for the girl. When they had reached the graveyard, Shuuya watched as they bury the body. He couldn't see her, and he didint know if he wanted to see her.

Shuuya visited her the day afterwards. It's black stone with her name engraved in it. It was about four in the afternoon, he had stayed in bed all day – too scared to visit. When he had finally gotten the courage to visit her, he wrapped the scarf she had given him, headed to the site that he had already memorized since the day before.

He stared at the stone, then at the ground that was layered with snow. The snow melted as it touched him. And then everything struck him immediately – Kido Tsubomi was dead.

He felt his body going limp, he wondered in the back of his head if it's just the cold. He then wondered if it's the cold from the weather or the cold realization that Tsubomi was never coming back to him. He's alone. She's gone from this world.

He didn't realize that he's cold, trembling, or crying. The tears are quiet at first, but then memories with the more amazing person overwhelm him and he starts to sob. He saw tears in his eyes, his eyes blurry. He couldn't see a thing. He screamed. He wants to laugh and smile with Tsubomi again, but he knew it's not going to happen.

He punched the ground, thinking how sick this whole damn world is. He wanted the cold to take him with her, but even he knows that's stupid.

He didn't know how long he's been at her grave or how long he's been crying, but his body was frozen and his lungs were burning. He clenched his left hand, feeling the golden band, his love for Tsubomi.

He wills himself to stand strong for her, because Tsubomi is strong and calm. He took one more look at the ground, and got up. His limbs aren't quite working, and he still feels cold. He tightened fists and left.
