Chapter 11
"The next match is between Uzumaki Kira and Sai." Genma exclaimed when the noise from the crowd subsided. Whispers arose at the name of Kira, many from Konoha knew who and what she was. But many hadn't thought about her and Naruto's relationship, both being an Uzumaki and all.
Kira stood opposite Sai on the battlefield. Both were looking intently at each other. Sai with his fake smile, and Kira with a smirk on her face. They were told not to fight to the full extent of their abilities, and both agreed on who would win. They weren't quite sure when the war was supposed to begin, and they had hoped it would start before the first match, but that wasn't the case.
"Begin." Genma announced, before jumping clear of the two participants.
Kira was first to start as she rushed headlong at Sai. The both of them went at it using Taijutsu, testing the waters a bit. Kira aimed her right fist at Sai's head, whilst blocking a kick to her midsection with her left hand. Sai was on one hand, having dodged Kira's strike. He followed up with his second foot, aiming to hit Kira's chin. This left him open and Kira moved back whilst spinning and aiming a kick to Sai's chest. Her kick missed, as Sai cartwheeled out of harm's way.
Sai withdrew a safe distance away, before pulling out his Tanto and rushing back at Kira. Kira pulled her twin Tanto's out smirking as Sai came closer. The fight transcended into a dance of blades. The audience were in stunned silence as they witnessed the clash. Sword strikes being parried, counter attacks versus counter attack. Their movements were fluid, as if running water flowed between them.
Naruto was impressed by his sister. He could sense the timing each had and it was perfect, flawless even. As if it was staged. Naruto smirked at that. 'So the fools aren't as foolish as I thought.' He thought to himself, knowing that the pair were holding back their true strength. At that instant Sai and Kira exchanged a nod. They both went in for a final attack, with Kira stashing one of her Tanto's in its scabbard. She parried Sai's attack once more before aiming her fist at Sai's head. Connecting, she knocked him out, ending the match in one fell swoop.
"Winner by knockout, Kira." Genma stated, much to the approval of the crowd. The cheers went through the roof, it had been one of the quickest but deadliest fights they had witnessed. Naruto smirked, knowing it was all an act. He knew that the Hokage would've advised them that war was on the horizon. If not the Hokage, then their sensei Danzo would have informed them.
Kira went back to the competitor's box whilst Sai was sent to the hospice. Once the medic nin transferred him there, he awoke from being 'knocked out' and disappeared in a swirl of leaves.
"That was an interesting match." Shiho stated. She had been standing next to Naruto the whole time, and couldn't believe how strong Naruto's sister is. She noticed that they hadn't used their full potential, but what they did display was enough to get the crowd interested.
Up in the Hokage's box, the disguised Orochimaru frowned. He knew that Kira and Sai were stronger than they let on, and he clearly saw that the fight was staged, with a clear victor in mind. The Sandaime noticed the look on the Kazekage's face and smirked. The disguised Sanin turned to his former teacher, a smile touching the corner of his eyes. "That was an interesting match. Though I would have thought the pair of them would be stronger, considering all the rumours surrounding them." He intoned, looking back at the arena.
"Yes I could see where such rumours come from." The Hokage exclaimed.
As the crowd slowed in their cheering, Genma called the next match. "Shiho versus Kinuta Dosu." He exclaimed, waiting for the contestants to descend from the box.
"Good luck." Naruto stated before noticing that Shiho was in the same position.
"It's okay, I don't need luck." Shiho responded before calling to the proctor. "I forfeit."
At the announcement, the crowd started booing. Naruto wandered what Shiho was doing, but decided to hold his tongue. He looked directly at her, but she turned away, blush creeping across her face. "I didn't train and had to work. Wasn't mentally prepared for a fight." She exclaimed. Naruto nodded at the explanation, and turned his head back towards the arena.
"Winner by way of forfeit, Dosu." Genma stated, much to the annoyance of the crowd. "Next match is between Uchiha Sasuke and Gaara no Subaku." Genma continued, waiting for the opponents to enter the arena.
Gaara appeared in a swirl of sand, arms crossed, face devoid of any emotion. The crowd waited anxiously for the beloved Uchiha to show what he had. "Could Uchiha Sasuke make his way down to the arena?" Genma stated once more. He looked to the contestants' box, but could not see the young Uchiha.
"Hokage-Sama. Sasuke is still not in Konoha. He is currently with Kakashi." The guard beside the Hokage exclaimed.
"Hmmm. It seems that we may have to disqualify him." The Hokage stated. He looked at the Kazekage from the corner of his eyes, hoping that he arises to the bait.
"Hokage-Dono. I don't think that you should disqualify Sasuke. Many in the crowd have come to see the last Uchiha in action." The disguised Orochimaru exclaimed, waving his right hand over the crowd. "I also want to see how he fairs against my son." He continued, hoping to persuade the Hokage.
The Hokage pretended to think about it, before agreeing with his fellow Kage. "Postpone the match." He stated to his body guard, whom disappeared to notify the proctor.
"The Hokage has decreed that the next match will be postponed." Genma exclaimed, much to the relief of many in the crowd.
Gaara walked back to his original position on the contestants' balcony, anger slowly clouding his vision.
"Next match will instead be between Kankuro and Aburame Shino." Genma announced. Kankuro looked at his sister before deciding on his next move.
"I forfeit." The Suna Nin exclaimed, not wanting to engage his enemy before the allotted timeframe. The crowd started booing. Two forfeits in a row really got them riled up. Genma was about to speak before the Suna Kunoichi hopped onto her fan and made her way down to the arena floor.
"I guess I'm up." She stated, looking intently at Shikamaru. "You getting down here, you lazy bum?" She asked the Konoha Nin.
"Troublesome. Think I might forfeit as well." Shikamaru whispered under his breath. Naruto caught the words on the wind, and decided to give the young Nara a little push. In that instance, Shikamaru was sent over the railing, and landed heavy on the ground.
Temari took that opportunity to send a few Kunai directly at Shikamaru, only to see him dodge them completely.
"Hey I didn't say start yet." Genma exclaimed, looking at Temari.
"Sorry, a bit overzealous." She replied nonchalantly.
"The winner from the previous match, Shino, by way of forfeit." Genma stated. "Next match is between Temari and Nara Shikamaru." He continued. "Begin."
Shikamaru remained at the edge of the arena, using the trees as cover. Temari pulled out her fan and swung, unleashing a torrent of wind.
Shikamaru waited patiently as the wind destroyed some of his cover. He quickly hopped to another hiding place, masking his presence easily. His Kunoichi opponent smirked, thinking that this was going to be an easy match. At that moment, a tendril of shadow made its way from the tree covers straight towards her.
Thinking quickly, Temari jumped back a few spaces, taking note of how far the shadow extended. She marked the ground with her fan, smiling as she thought up a few strategies.
Shikamaru was bored. He sat on the ground looking up at the clouds, wishing that he was one with them. He looked at Temari, taking note of the smirk she wore. He placed his hands together in a meditative stance, thinking his next few moves.
Temari was wary of the stance that Shikamaru took and kept her eyes peeled for any Jutsu that he may use.
The next instance, Shikamaru opened his eyes and took off his shirt. He tied the shirt to his Kunai and threw it up in the sky, while making a few hand seals.
Temari attacked at that moment, her fan unleashing a gale force wind in the direction of Shikamaru. He had already moved to another area before his opponents Jutsu could hit.
In his new place, Shikamaru observed the Kunoichi, then placed his hands into the Nara's famous seal.
Temari was not surprised when the shadow extended from Shikamaru's hiding place. She jumped back a few more paces taking note of how far the shadow extended this time. She looked at her opponent, smirk evident on her face. In that instant, a shadow passed over the Temari. She looked up, trying to determine the cause, not noticing the shadow extending from her opponent.
Shikamaru made a quick dash forward, the distraction enough for him to get the upper hand.
Temari found herself stuck in place, as she tried to look towards Shikamaru. "How did you?" She asked through gritted teeth.
"Easy. Shadow was made with the vest, but one just wasn't good enough." Shikamaru stated as 20 vests attached to Kunai landed around the pair. 19 of those disappearing in a poof of smoke. 'Shadow Clones. Smart brat.' Temari thought, smirking slightly.
"I guess you outsmarted me." Temari exclaimed, smirk still evident on her face. Shikamaru was put on edge by her words. Thinking quickly, he reached for his Kunai pouch, Temari mirroring his movements, as they both withdraw a Kunai.
They took aim and loosed at one another. Temari's smirk was still evident even as the Kunai descended towards her. They both went through a few hand seals, Temari copying Shikamaru. At the hand signs, Temari's smirk slowly faded. The hand signs were completed and the Kunai flying towards Temari multiplied. Her eyes widened as she tried to moved, heart pounding slightly.
"I forfeit." She exclaimed at the last instant, hoping that the multitude of Kunai magically stopped before hitting her.
Shikamaru released her from his hold and moved to avoid being hit. Thinking fast, Temari did the same.
"Winner by way of forfeit, Shikamaru." Genma stated, much to the approval of the crowd.
Temari remained silent for a second longer. "You had me there. It'll never happen again." She stated, before disappearing.
Shikamaru sighed, before looking up at the clouds one last time. 'Almost wasted my chakra reserves' he thought to himself. 'I really should have held back, but it was the only way to ensure Konoha's victory.' He concluded to himself. With that, Shikamaru slowly made his way up to the contestants' box.
"The next match is between Gaara no Subaku and Uchiha Sasuke." Genma stated, waiting for the two contestants to make their way into the arena.
Gaara appeared first once more. He looked slightly on edge and wanted to murder his opponent.
"Hokage-Sama, Uchiha-San is still not here. What should we do now?" The Sandaime's ANBU guard exclaimed. The Hokage was in thought for a second, before he was distracted by a commotion in the arena. The Suna Jinchuriki was acting strange, crouched on the ground and grabbing at his head in pain. Sand was starting to collect around him.
In that instant, Kakashi and Sasuke appeared in a show of leaves, both standing opposite the Suna Jinchuriki.
