Chapter 12

"Okay, so now that that's settled, how about some breakfast, boys? I'm sure you must be starving after your trip outside last night." Hinatas face fell, and so did yours, too -probably. You could only stare at the woman, while the redheads face flushed a deep shade of red and he averted his eyes from his mother. Obviously he was embarrassed of his mother finding out about your little run last night. "Eh? No! W-we weren't outside, mum! Where did you get that idea?", he stuttered more ore less, trying to talk his way out of this. "So you mean to tell me I didn't find two empty beds when I went to check on you at around eleven, and that the bathroom wasn't a total mess when I entered it this morning?", she inquired and Hinatas face visibly paled, all colour leaving it in an instant. It was amazing, how he could go from one extreme into another in mere seconds, really. You didn't say anything, well; not yet, that is. You would, eventually, explaining everything properly, if the redhead wouldn't do so on his own. You hadn't done anything wrong, so it couldn't be that bad, right? You thought you could hear him mutter something under his breath which sounded quite a lot like "I knew I forgot something yesterday!", and you groaned inwardly. Hinata-San seemed to have heard it, too, and crossed her arms. "Well?", she urged her son to go on speaking. She didn't seem too angry to you, more like she liked teasing him and poking fun at him.

Or your suspicion was completely wrong and she hid boiling rage under that encouraging smile of hers, since she didn't want a guest to see such a scene. "I even tried to call you, Shouyou! If you had at least taken your phone with you!", she reprimanded him, now actually frowning. "Sorry, mum. I guess I forgot it?", he offered, no longer denying the fact that you had been outside. "We went running. I didn't feel tired at all, and Kageyama suggested it.", he eventually explained, albeit a little reluctantly. "I thought so. It's so like you to forget your phone, though! But why didn't you just tell me you wanted to go out again?", she wondered, "It's not like I wouldn't have agreed at all, if you had given me proper reasons, you know?" "Yeah, sorry, mum. Sneaking out seemed to be more fun, though." Now that he knew he wouldn't be in trouble, he was smiling again, even joking a little, if you could call it that. Hinata-San sighed. "Well, please make sure to tell me the next time something like this happens -or at least take your phone with you,", she reprimanded him sternly and the redhead nodded in agreement, but his mind was already elsewhere.

"Didn't you say something about breakfast, mum? I'm starving!" Hinata-San smiled and nodded, apparently happy about how everything turned out. "Yes, dear, breakfast is ready. You and Kageyama-Kun can sit down. I'll bring the meals.", she ordered and the two of you followed her suggestion. Hinata eyed you, contemplating. "If I get up early tomorrow, will I get to know what you did earlier?", sure enough, he was back to pestering you. "Maybe.", was all you offered him, not willing to give in. "Oh come on! Just tell me already! It can't be that bad!", he declared, just as his mother put your bowls of food down in front of you. "Let him be, Shou-Chan. He'll eventually tell you in his own time. Don't bother him so much.", she chided him and you gave her a thankful nod. "But I want to know!" Giving up was not an option for him, but you already knew that. "Shou-Chan.", his mother warned him, and the redhead huffed, deciding it would be better to stop -for now. He started wolfing down his food, as did you, when Hinata-San had brought over her own dish and sat down.

Later that day, when you had exhausted yourselves with volleyball practice and were back inside the house, you decided to watch one of the movies you had brought over. Hinata-San had left earlier to visit Natsu in the hospital, and though Hinata had wanted to go with her, she had said that the two of you should stay home and enjoy yourselves. Natsu could go a day without seeing her brother, and besides, visiting a hospital wasn't what you normally did when having a friend over. That changed Hinatas mind and he accepted staying at home with you. So now you found yourself seated on the couch in Hinatas living room, watching 'the Giver'. And while you sat completely still, the redhead was shifting and fidgeting again -though he seemed to be concentrating on the movie. Maybe he was just so into it, you thought and glanced at him every now and then, to check if he had calmed down, but it seemed like that wouldn't happen anytime soon. Somehow, you managed to not get too annoyed at his fidgety behaviour.

When the movie was over, it was still only half past four in the afternoon -still plenty enough time to practice volleyball some more. Which you did. You mostly tossed to Hinata and he spiked the ball to the other end of the garden, where you pretended the end of the court was. You also practised his still crappy receives and your jumpserve, which you finally managed to aim more or less properly. Every sixth or seventh serve was still a miss, but you definitively got better and even got more force into it. Hinata cheered every time you managed to hit the half empty bottle of water with your serve and you practised until it went dark outside and you couldn't see anything anymore.

Hinatas mother still wasn't back from the hospital, but neither you nor the redhead cared, since that meant you could play another few rounds of that racing game from yesterday. You wanted a revenge to even out your score. Of course, you still were ahead of him in your over-all-rating, but Hinata now followed close behind you. The first few matches were won by Hinata -of course!- but then you started to take back your wins one by one, which Hinata wasn't too happy about. But you couldn't care less. But in the midst of another head-to-head run for the finishing line, the phone rang and startled the both of you out of yet another shouting match. The redhead paused the game and jumped over to answer the call.

Of course you didn't mean to eavesdrop on the conversation, but since he was pacing around in the living room, phone pressed close to his ear, you couldn't possibly not hear what he was saying. "Mum? Yeah, we were playing a game just now... No, we haven't.. Yes, I will. Why, though? Won't you be coming home soon?" And then followed a nanosecond of silence, in which he intently listened to his mother speak, before he burst out: "What?! She's awake?! Mum! Why didn't you say so already?! How is she? Can I come see her now? Does she want to see-", and there he as cut off, again intently listening to what his mother had to say. She was talking for quite a while and Hinata nodded occasionally and hummed in agreement. The longer his mother talked, the more apparent became the big, toothy grin that had started to spread over his features, as soon as he learned of his sister's awakening, and even you were smiling a little when you thought about the news. When he finally ended the call, he was smiling from ear to ear and practically vibrating with newfound energy.

"She's awake! Natsu is awake!", he cheered and leapt over to the couch where you still sat. He latched himself onto you, hugged you, actually, and bounced back to his feet in no time at all. You didn't even have time to process what just had happened, since the hug only seemed to last at a maximum two seconds. "We need to celebrate! -Mum is staying in the hospital, though. They are apparently still running some tests on Natsu's brain, and she wants to to be with her.", he explained to you and you nodded. You didn't really want to celebrate, though. Of course you were happy that the little girl was awake again, but did you really need to celebrate that with just two people? "Shouldn't we at least wait until your mother is back or Natsu is discharged from the hospital?", you wondered to him, and his cheerful manner got a little damper. "You're right! But that doesn't mean we can't make plans, right?", he wanted to know and you only shrugged. "You do that. I don't know what one would do at such a celebration anyway." "Eh?! What? You're such a grump, Kageyama!", Hinata pouted, but he seemed to accept your reasoning. -Which was rare enough in itself.

The racing game was temporarily forgotten, with Hinata thinking about different ways and possibilities to celebrate Natsu's awakening. -Which you told him all were complete nonsense. Nobody played volleyball to honour a little girl, right? Of course, if the little redhead had been a fan of the sport, it would be something different, but as far as Hinata could tell, she neither liked nor disliked it. He gave up when dinnertime came around and his stomach made itself known with a loud growl. "Guess we should heat something up. Mum said she didn't know when she'll be back.", he shrugged and sauntered over to the kitchen, where his mother had stored the leftovers from lunch. You followed him since you didn't have anything else you could do, anyway, leaned into the doorway, arms crossed and watched him put the food on two plates to heat up in the microwave. You ate in silence, too occupied with shovelling down your food to do anything else, and after you had put everything into the dishwasher and cleaned up, you decided to resume your last match.

It ended with Hinata grumbling in frustration and throwing his controller away. He had lost, which meant that you now were five points ahead of him. You cheered and taunted him a little with the point-gap, only to rile him up a little. Now that his sister seemed to be doing better, he was being in an all over better condition, too, and could go along with it, actually, without being distracted. Soon, the friendly bickering became more than that, though, and the two of you were fighting yet again. You didn't even know what the reason was, this time. One thing just came to another and then you both were rolling over the floor together, trying to hold the other down and claim another win. You hadn't fought like this before, but up until now you had liked to think that you were the stronger one, seeing as you were taller and more muscular than the redhead. Unfortunately, this didn't seem to be the case. Hinata may have been small, but his body was that of an athlete, only lean muscles and pure strength. Which made him a formidable opponent, actually.

Eventually, you managed to pin him down, though he still squirmed and wriggled beneath you, trying to get away, even if you held him down by his wrists and sat on his waist. "See, I told you!", you grit out between clenched teeth and strengthened your grip on him, to stop him from moving around so much. "Ugh, Bakageyama! Get off of me! You're heavy!", Hinata demanded instead and squirmed again. "Not until you say it!", you shot back, glaring at him, "And stop wriggling around so much!" "I wont!", he negated, struggling even more now -to prove his point- though to no avail. You had him pinned down and there was nothing he could do about it. "Say it!", you ordered, ignoring his futile attempts to free himself. "No! Never!" Stubborn as always, the shrimp started a last try to rid himself of your weight, before he finally lay limp and unmoving beneath you, staring accusingly up at you. "Just say it and I'll let you go.", you advised him, and he frowned, obviously not trusting you with that. You waited for him to make his decision, sitting unmoving on top of him and watching him, while you had the opportunity to do so without to seem to be staring. You could loose yourself in those golden-brown eyes of his, really -had you just been given the chance. They were so beautiful full of life and laughter and happiness, so unlike your own, that you just couldn't help yourself.

Notes:

Finally! I finally finished transferring the chapter from my crappy -and sometimes unreadable- handwriting to my laptop, and, what can I say? I hope I didn't bore you to death with this chapter, even though there are a some interesting parts in there? Well, at least I think there are a few. What do you think of that spur-of-the-moment-hug from Hinata, and what about their little brawl at the end? I know it's a cliffhanger for you, and yes, I chose to end the chapter at this point to leave you guys wondering what will happen next. Mean, am I? :D At least I think the next update wont be taking me as long as this one did, and I'm fairly sure it will be up before christmas. :)
