Chapter 12 – Be Good, See You Soon

Saturday, 11th January 2025 – Week 25 – 6 months

"Come with me Justin…" Kensi requested as she gathered her things. It was late Saturday morning and while on Monday the federal agent would go back to work until the end of her 7th month, now she was ready to leave the Deeks' household. In the meanwhile, Deeks had to go with Monty to the vet, it was an emergency, the poor dog hadn't been eating for a few days and they always kept pushing the food but he just wouldn't digest it. Of course when Justin saw his father leaving the house he was worried, so Kensi needed to find a way not only to distract him but also to give him hope for a better tomorrow and prepare him for what was becoming more and more imminent.

"What if daddy comes back with Monty?" He asked with worry in his eyes as he came to the lobby.

"Kiddo," Kensi started kneeling down in front of her son. "I know you're worried with Monty but you know I have to leave and I can't leave you here alone. Plus, if you come with me, I believe I have a surprise for you little man." She said smiling warmly.

"Really? Will I see them?" Them. Kensi knew exactly what the 6 year old was referring to so she nodded.

"Sure! Last month I asked Dr. Kate if you could with me sometime and she would love to see you again." She informed while taking one of his jackets from the coat hanger.

"Did she saw me when I was in your belly too?" Justin asked curiously as Kensi helped him get dressed.

She chuckled. "Yes she saw you." She took a quick look at her wrist watch and looked back up. "And now we have to go, the appointment is at 11.30. We need to leave now in order to get there in time. Come on little man, hurry up!"

"Kensi Blye." Nurse Allison called from the door before heading back to the office when they stood up. Kensi already knew all of them ever since her first pregnancy and the skinny lady with bright green eyes and grey hair was the oldest and wisest from them all and Kensi had always liked her.

When they entered the white room, the nurse was waiting for them with a warm smile on her face. "Hello Kensi, how are you?" She asked shaking Kensi's hand. Then she noticed Justin and not Deeks beside the pregnant woman. "Oh hi! And who do we have here?"

"Well this is Justin, my son." Kensi introduced him proudly while ruffling his shaggy hair.

"It is nice to meet you Justin." Allison said and JT nodded grinning. "Well feel free to lie down, Dr. Adams will be here in a minute." And with that she walked away.

"Mommy?" Justin called. He was currently sitting on the chair beside Kensi and was looking around to see all the screens and tools in complete awe. Kensi was just observing him with a smile on her face.

"Yes baby?" She asked still looking his way.

He suddenly turned around in his chair and faced her with bright and intense blue eyes. "Why is your last name different from daddy's? Aunt Nell's is the same as Uncle Eric's and Caleb's." He asked out of curiosity.

"Well that's actually a good story that I will be happy to tell you about later. What do you think?" Justin showed his toothless grin and nodded happily just when the door to the office opened again. Dr. Kate Adams entered the room, her long blonde hair was up in a neat ponytail and her bright blue eyes were happy to see yet one more expectant mom.

"Hi Kensi and I bet you are…Justin, right?" Dr. Kate asked as she shook his little hand and smiled.

"Yes but my friends call me JT!" He answered.

"And can I be your friend?"

"Of course you can!" He smirked just like Deeks.

The doctor then turned her head to Kensi. "Oh I see where he got his charms!" She exclaimed and both women just chuckled knowingly. "Well JT how about we see your baby brother and your baby sister now?"

Kensi lifted her shirt and prepared for the cold gel to hit her baby bump. As it did, Dr. Kate turned on the monitor and the image of Kensi's uterus started to appear. Almost at her 6th month of gestation, you could definitely see that on the left side of her tummy was Logan and on the right side was Riley, but little Justin was only 6 years old so he didn't understand where his siblings actually were.

"You see that JT?" Kate pointed to the screen. "That's your little brother and on the other side," Now she moved the wand to the right side. "we have your sister."

"Can they see us through that machine?" Justin asked curiously.

The doctor chuckled before answering him. "No buddy. This machine is called an ultrasound and we use it to see if the babies are good."

Kensi who had been quiet this whole time felt like it was appropriate speak up. "And are they good though Kate?" There was a hint of fear and worry in her voice but that was normal whenever she had to go to a practice or a hospital. It seemed to make her unease…

Kate turned her head to the brunette and smiled kindly. From what Kensi knew, Dr. Adams was almost 50 years old, has been married for almost 30, had two boys, one was in college studying Nuclear Engineering and the other was already working as an Architect, and more than anything she did love her job and nothing made her happier than helping women through the process of pregnancy. And for some reason, that warm smile was the one thing that would always give Kensi some sort of relief. "Yes Kensi, everything is great. Now I'm gonna get your pictures and JT you have to promise me something."

"What?" Justin asked with that grin of his.

"When you get home, you'll go directly to your bedroom to hang them up on your wall. What do you think?"

"I will!"

"Promise?"

He nodded. "Pinky promise!" He said sticking out his finger.

Like the good boy he is, as soon as they got to the house he ran to his room to put the images of his siblings on the wall. Kensi had never seen him that happy, after all she wasn't as bad as a mother as she thought she would be. She and Deeks had managed to raise this kid in a balanced way and Kensi could only be proud of its result.

After lunch Deeks still hadn't returned home but has texted Kensi: "THEY SAY TODAY IS THE DAY BABE... :'C –D"

She knew exactly what he meant and she couldn't help but find herself sad about the old mutt. Kensi didn't say a thing to her son though and when she finished doing the dishes she found the little guy sitting on the couch playing distractedly with one of his newest toys from Christmas instead of watching TV as he loved and used to after meals.

"Whatcha doing buddy?" The federal agent asked Justin as she sat down next to him.

"I'm waiting." He stated simply.

"For what?" Kensi ran her fingers through his soft shaggy brown hair and frowned at his answer.

"For you mommy! When we were at the doctor you told me you were going to tell me a story!" JT stopped playing with his toy and looked his mother in the eyes. Oh, note to self: be careful with girls when Justin turns 14!, she thought containing her chuckle.

"Oh I see… I said later, I just didn't know you would want to hear it right now. But I guess I can tell you now.."

"Yes!" With that said, Kensi pulled Justin to her side as he placed oh so gently his little hand atop of her swollen stomach.

And so Kensi started telling her son about her father for the first time. "You know where people go to when they pass away, right?"

"Yes, they go to Heaven, isn't that right mommy?"

"Yes it is. Well my dad,-"

"And dogs too?"

"Yes, animals go to Heaven as well. As I was saying, my dad, well your grandpa, he's in heaven now. His name's Donald Blye and when I was just like you, he was my best friend. He taught me a lot of the things I know today, you know? The problem is that he went away too early, when I was 15 and I was very sad. He was the man I knew and I thought I would never find someone as good as him until I met daddy. Well and the reason why my last name is the same as my father, Blye, and not yours and daddy's is because when we got married I missed him a lot and I told that to your dad and he accepted my choice but I said I still wanted to take his name… And that's why my name's Kensi Marie Deeks Blye." Kensi ended with misty eyes and a single teardrop almost sliding from the corner of her eyes.

Justin had watched his mother mindfully as she spoke, his attention on her all the while and when she finished, he saw how that little tear was forming in the corner of her eye. Quickly he sat up straight and did what his father had told him to do if he ever saw a girl crying: hug them. "Don't cry Mommy…" JT whispered into her hair mildly worried.

Kensi was honestly touched by this little gesture and hugged him back while the tears actually fell from her eyes. "I'm not crying baby, Mommy is okay." She said as he pulled back.

"Really?"

"Yes Justin, I'm great. It's just that you make me so proud and I know you'd make Grandpa just as proud as I am…" With that Kensi leaned forward and kissed her son's cheek only to be interrupted by the door opening.

"A little help here please!" Deeks called from the front door. Kensi and Justin ran to the lobby to meet the Agent with poor old Monty in his arms, possibly unconscious or too ill to walk. Justin was shocked and frightened and held Kensi's hand with a tight grip on it. The pregnant woman was just as shocked as her son but helped her husband by holding the door for him.

Deeks walked in to place Monty in the living room while Kensi closed the door and waded back to the couch with Justin.

"What did they say?" Kensi finally asked when the shaggy haired man sat back on the couch beside her.

Deeks sighed, how was he supposed to tell his family their dog was going to die in the next few hours? "There's nothing they can do. He's too sick… It's today Kens." Now it was his eyes where the tears were forming. "Damn… I love that old mutt!" He whispered and leaned against her should where he placed his head.

By now Justin was more relaxed and had let go of Kensi's hand which she gladly put on her husband's face to calm him down.

Not even to dinner time did Monty endure his disease. From the time Deeks arrived with him – around 4 pm – to the time, 3 hours passed. Justin had been playing (or trying to at least) with him the whole time to bring him back to the way he was. But when he wasn't even reacting anymore, JT got scared and decided to call his parents who were in the kitchen starting dinner.

They came running, obviously… "What happened?" Deeks was absolutely startled getting down on his knees next to his son.

The kid had teardrops in his eyes when he looked at his Dad and the look he was giving Deeks, simply broke the man's heart. "Daddy, he's not opening his eyes anymore! What do we do?" He cried.

"Buddy, I think it's time for us to say goodbye…"

"But I don't want to say it…"

"But you have to now Justin." Kensi chimed in, getting on her knees as well. "Here, I'll start if you want…" She then moved to where the dog's head was and started scratching behind Monty's ears with one of her hands. "Monty, when I first met you, I thought you were just as your owner: goofy and larky. But with the years, I learned a lot about you. You're loyal, kind, lovable and most important, you were always good with Justin when he was a little baby and you were never jealous at all. Thank you for changing the way I looked at dogs. I'll miss you buddy." Kensi finished and promptly wiped the tears running down her face. Damn hormones!

"I can talk now…" Justin stated before trading places with his Mom only to be watched carefully by his parents as he spoke up. "Mommy says you're going to Heaven. I'm glad you're going to Heaven now instead of being here suffering. I will always love you, never forget that!" The poor boy couldn't even say anything else, he was still so shocked from moments ago.

By Deeks's turn, everyone had already rather wet eyes and tears rolling down their cheeks. This dog really was important to this family. "Monty, buddy, I'm so glad to have had you all these years. You taught me so much and I'm happy that you got to meet Justin while you could. You were the best dog an owner could ask for. And I'm so proud of you little mutt…Thank for coming into my life… for keeping company when no one else could, for being so good to me, to Kensi and to Justin. I'm gonna miss you so much buddy! Don't forget that I love you man… Now up you go! Just remember one thing: be good in Heaven, don't miss me too much, I'll see you soon!" When Deeks finished, he put a hand over Monty's tired heart.

There was no heartbeat… And with Monty's death, all lives in the Deeks' household had become poorer. Deeks was sad because of his reliable and probably best friend. Justin cried for his furry mate. And Kensi's heart broke for the men in her life…

What now?, She thought.

Quickly Deeks got up and so did Kensi. "Well I uh- gotta… I need to take him back to the vet. He asked me to do it."

"I'll do it. I'll take him there." She said touching his arm in a reassuring move. "Just help me putting him in the car."

He did as he was told and soon Kensi was driving away from their place to take his dog away from them. That's when it hit Deeks and he started crying harder, he would never see Monty ever again…
