The 67th Hunger Games-
This year, rumours of rebels and fighting have torn through the Capitol in the weeks leading up to the reaping. I do notice that the mood in District 12 is more tense than usual. District 12 is the poorest district so if anyone had a cause to rebel, it would be them.
This year, I pick a 15 year old girl called Nadia and 13 year old boy named Will. Nadia is the most optimist, hopeful young girl I have ever met. She keeps talking about how maybe she'll get lucky in the arena, it could play to her strengths (so far the only strengths we've discovered are that she's good at climbing), the careers could lose, the Capitol will love her. Admittedly, they do love her hopefulness and she does actually get a few sponsors. Will is also very hopeful. He has a pin badge his dad gave him in the shape of a star, and he tells me that you can make wishes on it and it will save you. He tells the Capitol this is his interview and they think he is so adorable, even if the careers are turning red from trying not to laugh in the background. In the 60 seconds before the start of the games, Will is clutching his pin and Nadia's eyes still shine with optimism and hope. But neither of them last long. Will gets a knife in the back in the bloodbath and, although it doesn't kill him, it doesn't make him stronger. He leaves a trail of blood which the careers quickly follow and he is dead in a few hours. I wish he could have hidden a bit better. Nadia also gets injured in the bloodbath but she gets away with a backpack and spends the rest of her time sat up a tree. But she dies on day 5 when she gets cornered by the eventual victor Augustus Braun from District 1. She tells him 'I can still get away' but he laughs and kills her quickly. Hopeful to the end.
I can feel us slowly losing hope. But I will remember how she managed to carry on.
Nadia means hopeful
Will means wish/to wish
