"Is the blindfold really necessary?"
"Is your complaining really necessary?" Shadow harrumphed and Sonic could practically hear the eye roll. "Come on Shadow, you've been complaining since we got out of school. And it's our anniversary, so I'm just trying to surprise you."
"A night in with a movie and no blindfold would be a nice surprise."
"Now where's the fun in all that?" Sonic said, guiding his boyfriend along to his backyard. His surprised required some help (thanks to Rouge) and it would be perfect for him and Shadow. If the hedgehog would hush for at least two seconds, he might actually like it. Might, no he'd definitely will like it. It took Sonic at least a week to plan it up, laziness aside, and get all the require necessities for what he had planned.
"Can I at least get a clue on what this whole 'surprise' is?" Shadow said, raising his hands up to quote the surprise.
"Like I said, where's the fun in all that?" Sonic chuckled as Shadow sighed in defeat, and finally stopped at their destination. "Alright Mister Grumpy, you can take off the blindfold." Shadow rolled his eyes again and reached behind to untie the blindfold.
"Sonic, this surprise better be worth putting on this stupid...oh. Oh, wow." Shadow trailed off his threat, widening his eyes at the scene before him. He couldn't have one word for it, but it was absolutely stunning. The backyard had been placed up with a table and two chairs in the middle of the grass, with twinkling lights surrounding it hanging from a banner. A picnic basket sat on the table, blending in to the golden light. Even one small rose laid in a vase right next to the basket. As he said, it was absolutely stunning. Shadow turned towards Sonic in shock. "You did all this... for me?"
"Of course Shadow, I love you." Sonic said, grinning at the shocked hedgehog. He took the other's hand and guided him towards the table, sitting him down on one chair before rounding over to sit in his own.
"Where'd you get all the lights?" Shadow asked, looking up in awe.
"Rouge helped." Sonic admitted softly, still grinning at Shadow. Shadow gave him a small easy smile back and reached out to open the basket. He dug into it and slowly took out the items inside. He chuckled when he saw his favorite gummy bears.
"Really?"
"I knew you liked those type of gummy bears, so I thought why not?" Shadow shook his head lightly and continued to pull everything else out.
"Wow, Sonic, this is way too much."
"It's our anniversary Shadow, it'll never be too much."
"It's been 6 months." Shadow deadpanned.
"Every celebration counts!" He argued back, causing Shadow to chuckle again. Shadow reached out again and took Sonic's hand.
"Really, thank you for this. No one's gone through this much trouble for me." Sonic gave him his trademark grin.
"It'll always be my pleasure, shall we eat?"
"We shall." Shadow said with a wide grin as he reached to his neck and gently touched the locket that hung around his neck.
Shadow woke up with a start, his back protesting from laying painfully on the cold, metal floor. He groaned and rubbed his back in sympathy when the shackles around his wrists acknowledged him of his imprisonment. His mind however drifted to the memory-dream he just had. His heart broken a little more upon realizing Sonic probably would never make a night so special again, seeing as the other hedgehog clearly hated him. When he realized he was dating a freak, someone who was born in a lab rather being born normally. He barely noticed the metal doors slip open as he wallowed himself in self pity and hatred.
"Shadow?" The hedgehog in question perked his head up with a twitch of his ear at the familiar voice. He whipped his head to the doors and widened his eyes at the sight of Sonic.
"Sonic? Sonic, what- what are you doing here?" Shadow hissed, turning his body towards the cobalt hedgehog as much as the shackles allowed. "You shouldn't be here. How the hell did you even get here?"
Shadow was clearly on the verge of panic so Sonic crouched down and gently placed his hand on Shadow's shoulder, frowning when he flinched away slightly. "Hey, it's okay. I'll explain everything later, right now we just need to get you out of here."
"Why did you come back for me?" Shadow asked as Sonic tried to pull off the shackles, but to no avail.
"I'd always come back for you, Shadow." Sonic replied, grunting as he pulled with all his might at the chains.
"But I thought you..." Shadow trailed off, avoiding the other's gaze with pained eyes and not realizing the other stopped trying to free him to get a good look at Shadow.
"You thought what?"
"I thought you... hated me." Shadow mumbled, not looking into Sonic's sympathetic eyes.
"Shadow, I could never hate you," Sonic emphasized. "I love you too much for that."
"You... You shouldn't." The black and red hedgehog relished the fact that Sonic still loved him, but couldn't bring himself to believe it.
"Shadow-"
"Freeze!" A shout came from behind the two, both turning their heads to the metal doors. Three G.U.N officers stood with guns pointing at them. "Hands where we can seem them!" One boomed, raising his gun to Sonic. The hedgehog obeyed and raised his hands up defensively. "Away from the subject." Sonic tossed a concerned look before he backed up from Shadow.
"How did you get in here?" A soldier questioned, his gun waving around threateningly. Sonic narrowed his eyes and stubbornly said nothing. The soldier growled and stepped forward, but another held him back.
"Don't Jack, he ain't worth it. Just get the test subject." Jack, the soldier, glaring at Sonic and listened to his comrade, stepping down but keeping his threatening stance. The soldier who stopped Jack and the other one approached Shadow, taking hold of the chain roughly to get him to stand up.
"Hey leave him alone." Sonic tried saying, before Jack was in front of his wielding the gun in front of his face.
"Shut it kid, before you get the treatment he's about to get." Jack hissed lowly, jabbing his weapon into Sonic's chest. The hedgehog glared at the soldier, turning a worried gaze to Shadow as the others took his shackles off and pushed him towards the door.
"Let him go!" Sonic shouted, pushing Jack out of the way to get to Shadow.
"Son of a bitch." Sonic heard over his shoulder, but focused on getting to Shadow. He didnt get too far when someone knocked something hard against his head. He dropped to the floor as his vision became blurry, only hearing Shadow's cries of his name and seeing the retreating G.U.N soldiers boots.
"You really shouldn't have done that, kid." Sonic lastly heard the soldier's taunt before he lost all consciousness.
