Chapter 12

Lily blinked hazily, white surrounding her vision. Was this heaven? Lily tried to open her eyes wider but felt her body protest and ache with pain at the thought. No, there is no pain in heaven. I'm either in hell or purgatory, hopefully hell, then I'm dead. Lily let out a low groan and put a hand to her pounding head.

"Oh good you're awake." She heard the bustling body of Madam Pomfrey approaching. "Your friends have been worried sick about you- can you tell me what happened?"

"I was rejected." Lily managed past her dry throat.

"Oh is that all?" Lily opened her eyes to see the sympathetic smile on Poppy's face.

"No you don't understand, I'm a Veela Madam Pomfrey; I was rejected by my mate and now I'm dying." Lily grasped the young woman's arm.

"This is a much serious matter then. I will inform the headmaster at once. Drink this potion; I'll let your friends in." She handed Lily a cup full of smoking red potion, which she brought gently to her pursed lips. Just as she was downing the last mouthful, her friends surrounded her bed.

"Lily, what happened? You've been out for two weeks." Alice informed her, taking the chair nearest her head.

"Rejected," Lily said as an explanation. Alice, Marlene, and Remus all sucked in a sharp breath.

"James rejected you?" Remus looked more confused than ever.

"The morning of the full moon, I followed him and told him in front of Sirius and Peter. He rejected me and left, Sirius and Peter were more reluctant. I passed out and I'm guessing Madam Pomfrey found me when she came to get you."

"She did," Marlene confirmed.

"I only have a few months? Or was it weeks, maybe days… whichever to live."

"Weeks, months, and days are completely different Lily." A new voice said from the door. Sirius Black was leaning against the door frame, Peter at his side.

"Either way I die." Lily shrugged, her voice devoid of emotion.

"I don't want you to die Lily." Peter told her supportively.

"In all honestly I think James is being an idiot about it." Sirius sat down on the end of her bed.

"Well, it doesn't really matter; the problem will be fixed soon enough."

"There's got to be another-"

"There is no other way Marls, you read the same books I did. You know what happens when a Veela is rejected. We no longer have any reason to live so we die."

"Can't we get your second mate to change his ways and accept you?"

"It won't work now Alice, I've already chosen the mate suited to my path in life, this is the point of no return."

"Sirius, could we convince James-"

"There is no convincing him Wormtail, he's chosen to kill Lily with his words."

"Delightful way to put it Padfoot,"

"Thank you Moony, you know how I have my ways with words."

Lily giggled a bit at their antics; they all shared in a smile before Poppy shuffled back into the room.

"The Hospital Wing is closing up; you can come back and visit her tomorrow." She ushered them to the door before turning to Lily. "You're excused from all your classes for the time being by the Headmaster, I am sorry about your condition."

"Thank you," Lily said with as much sincerity as she could muster.

"Students, I'm afraid we have a grave situation at the hands of our school." Albus Dumbledore stood before his students the next morning as they all gathered for breakfast. "One of our dearest students is being led through a slow painful death. You see, she was of a different type of magical stock. A Veela, she revealed her true identity to the one chosen to be her mate. If a Veela is rejected they are doomed to die, in light of her new identity, this boy rejected her. The woman has been left to die, without an ounce of love in her life. What I want you all to understand right now- is this: there is no love purer than that of a Veela. To love someone so completely to be willing to give up your own life or to promise longer than forever with you is something no one else can promise. While the origins of their love may seem forced or fake, to love a Veela is the most precious thing a human can feel. We all cherished this girl while she was with us, she was what muggles might refer to as an angel among us, and I ask you take a moment of silence in her memory."

The Great Hall was deathly silent, only the staff and select few students knew who Albus was referring to. The group of Marauders was exceptionally silent and subdued throughout breakfast. James didn't even respond to their attempts to talk to him during classes. After the classes were over for the day Sirius, Peter, Remus, Alice, and Marlene left James to go and visit Lily who was being kept behind a green curtain; probably to shield her from curious visitors. They pushed aside the curtain, staring down at Lily's now chalk white face.

"Dumbledore told me it won't be long and then it'll all be over. I was apparently supposed to die during my two week coma; it's a miracle I survived long enough to wake up." Lily whispered, her voice scratchy and deeper than it should be.

Marlene and Alice began to cry, Sirius turned away to hide his tears, Peter sagged to the floor, and Remus made quiet choking noises.

James sat alone staring at the dying common room fire. Dying. It was all his fault he was the cause for Lily's suffering now, with his words he had doomed her to death. Searching his emotions he could only find hurt and love. He could never stop loving Lily, whether she was a Veela or not. She didn't have control over who her mate would be. Dumbledore's words came back to him now. There is no love purer than that of a Veela. To love someone so completely to be willing to give up your own life or to promise longer than forever with you is something no one else can promise. James shot to his feet realizing his mistake. With unsteady feet he ran towards the hospital wing where Lily was sure to be. He entered, his view of Lily and his friends clear. Madam Pomfrey had removed the green curtain from earlier and the young woman was standing nearby choking back sobs. His eyes fell once more on his friends, Sirius was actually crying and Marlene was wrapped tightly in his arms, Alice was crying into Peter's shoulder while Remus sat hunched over in the chair next to Lily's bed, his hand covering his face, glittering tears falling into his lap and onto the floor. Finally James' eyes rested on Lily, her eyes were closed and one hand hung off the bed completely limp. There was no sign of her breathing; there was not even the thumping of her heart to be heard. James was too late.
