Chapter 12
Carly's POV:
I jump to my feet and stare at Nevel in disbelief. He just sits there and continues to eat his popcorn.
"What are you doing to Sam?" I ask him angrily. He looks at me with a look of condescension.
"I'm putting her through her second fear." He explains as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"What is it?" I ask him. He smiles at me in a way that makes me feel very uncomfortable.
"Why would I tell you that?" he asks and continues smiling
"So I can help her." I tell him. His smile grows wider and his eyes glisten.
"Ah, but you can't." he says and I stare at him dumbfounded. "I already let you help her once, and now you're mine." He tells me.
"That's not fair." I tell him. He laughs his odd little laugh and his smile grows so large I feel like his face is about to split in half.
"The real world isn't fair and neither is mine." He says.
"Then I'm leaving." I tell him. His creepy smile vanishes in less than a second and he glares at me and for the first time I feel legitimately scared.
"You can't leave," he threatens me and as he says this, chains appear and wrap themselves around my ankles and wrists, "I won't let you." Suddenly the apartment starts to shift and change. The room now appears to be a dungeon with lit torches covering the walls. Nevel stands up from what used to be the couch but now appears to be a table covered with torture tools. The chains wrapped around my wrists fly up and attach themselves to the stone ceiling, while the chains around my feet connect to the floor so I'm hanging by my arms. "Now," Nevel says as he picks up a large sinister looking knife, "Are you sure you want to leave?"
Sam's POV:
I fall to my back as the spider lands on me. I quickly grab its foremost legs and put my feet under it. I kick it off; it flies away and slams on its back. I jump to my feet and turn to see it flip itself over. It charges me and I jump over it. I land on my feet and start to run toward the closest building. It's about twenty stories up and when I reach the edge, I muster all of my strength and jump. I reach the edge of the roof and grab it with my hands and scramble up it. I look over the edge and see the spider reach the edge and start to climb up it starts to run up the wall but its own weight was too much and it falls off. It tries again and has a similar result. It tries once more, this time going very slowly. It takes one step at a time and makes more progress; I have about five minutes before it reaches the roof. I try thinking of a plan, but a familiar nagging in the back of my head distracts me. It's the same feeling I got just before I saw Freddie. I sit down and concentrate on it. The feeling becomes a word; he's saying my name so I say his. Just as before I soon see him in front of me also sitting down.
"Sam!" he says happily. "What's happening?" I don't respond immediately, I reach out and try to touch him, but my hand only passes through him. "Sam?" he asks confused.
"I'm sorry, I just miss you." I tell him.
"Sam, what's going on?" he asks again.
"Nevel has trapped in a dream world where if we die here we die for real." I sum up quickly. Freddie looks at me dumbfounded.
"Okay." He says slowly.
"I wish you were actually here." I tell him. He nods and looks down slowly. Suddenly his head shoots up and he stares at me with wide happy eyes.
"I can be, you just have to pull me through." He says.
"How?" I ask.
"The same way you got me here, just concentrate, and I'll find my way in." He explains. I close my eyes and concentrate on him, I hold him with my mind, and think about how he feels, how he looks, how he sounds, how he smells, how he tastes. And then I feel a hand grab mine. I open my eyes to see him sitting in front of me. I throw my arms around him and pull him close to me. I'm about to pull away when I hear a scuffling noise behind Freddie. I keep my hold on him and jump to the side in time to see the spider land where we just were. Unfortunately I jumped too far and went off the side of the building still holding Freddie who had also seen the spider after I jumped. We hold each other tight as we plummet through space toward the ground.
Carly's POV:
I drop to the ground and grab at my stomach. I had told him no. I said I wanted to leave so he cut me. I pull my shirt up some to look at the cuts, but they had healed. I look up at him and see that his face is one of controlled anger.
"I'm going to ask you again," He says trying to be patient, "Are you sure you want to leave?" I sit up and look him in the eye, he moves in closer to hear me better. I open my mouth, and spit in his eye. He merely smiles an evil smile. He plunges the knife deep into my stomach and I let out a shriek. He pulls it out and waives his hand, the wound closes and the pain ceased.
"Why are you doing this?" I ask him. He bends over and looks me right in the eyes.
"Because I can." He whispers darkly and plunges the knife back in.
Sam's POV:
I close my eyes and get ready to hit the pavement. However I never hear the splat or feel my bones shatter. I open my eyes and see the pavement getting farther away. I look at Freddie and see him smirking at me
"What's happening?" I ask him.
"You said this was a dream, so I dreamed that I could fly." He said matter o' factly. I kiss him softly and we drop ten feet. I let out a small yelp and we stop and climb higher up in the air.
"What happened?" I ask him.
"I lost my concentration." He said.
"Because I kissed you?" I ask.
"You're distracting, so sue me." He says, his cheeks tinting slightly red. I smile at this but stop when I see a large brown furry shape leap at us. Freddie swerves out of the way at the last minute and lands on another roof. He lets go of me and turns as the spider prepares to strike again. Freddie stands his ground and the spider leaps. He holds out his hand and a blue field surrounds us, the spider hits it and flew back.
"What was that?" I ask.
"Force field." He says and it vanishes and then adds, "I love controlling dreams."
"But you don't." says the spider as it straightened up. We stare at it in shock, until we recognize the voice. "I do." Says Nevel through the spider.
"Give it up Nevel, your little pet can't hurt us." I tell him. The spider looks at me.
"Your right." He says and then the most disgusting thing I've ever seen happens. The spider's back splits open and Nevel pushes himself out. The spider lies down and melts into the ground. "I do know something that can hurt you though." He said with a smile. He waives his hand and a T.V. appears next to him. The screen flickers on and I see an image of a dungeon lit by torches hung on the wall. In the center of the dungeon was a figure suspended by their wrists. At a closer look I recognize the figure as Carly, she's hanging there with blood dripping from her stomach. I turn to look at Freddie and see a look of fear and disgust on his face, no doubt the same as mine.
"What are you doing to her?" I yell at him. He gives me a smile that makes my stomach churn.
"Don't worry about that," he laughs, "Worry about your last fear, I saved the best for last." And with that he vanishes, the T.V disappearing with him. Suddenly the sky goes dark, the sun covered by countless dark clouds. The wind, at first a light breeze, quickly becomes a fierce gale. The howling wind rips at me and almost carries off Freddie. He turns to me and grabs my shoulders to get my attention. He tries to ask me something but his voice is carried off by the wind.
"What?" I yell as loud as I can. He gets closer and repeats.
"What's the last fear?" he asks. I'm about to tell him I don't know, when a large dark shape rises behind him. He steps out of a shadow and I immediately recognize the similarities. He is six feet tall with a strong jaw, short blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. He is very muscular which his skintight black shirt shows. His pants are made of some sort of dark cargo material. He is also wearing a long black coat down to his calves that flaps in the harsh wind. A word escapes my lips and Freddie strains to hear it. "What?" he asks. I point to the man and repeat the word.
"Dad."
Nevel's POV:
I walk through the dreams until I reach Carly's. I smile as I enter the dungeon thinking of Sam's final fear but my smile disappears when I see the chains hanging from the ceiling, without Carly hanging from them. I walk closer to the chains and see Carly lying in fetal position on the ground beneath them. I get closer and crouch next to her.
"Did we try to escape?" I ask as if she were a child. She mutters something and I lean in close to listen. "What was that?" I ask. Suddenly I feel a sharp blade pierce my heart. She had been hiding the knife with her body and when I got close she pounced.
"I said," she whispers in my ear, "Rue this." And she twists the knife. I fall to the ground as she pulls away and it all fades to black.
Sam's POV:
Freddie moves to stand between my father and myself.
"Sam," my father says in a voice that used to lull me to sleep, but now makes me literally cower in fear, "Come out from behind him, I want to talk to you."
"Leave her alone." Freddie tells him threateningly. My father doesn't bother to glance at Freddie, his eyes stay fixed on mine. He merely flicks his hand and Freddie flies off of his feet and crashes into a building.
"Now," says my dad as he walks closer, "let's talk." He's about two feet from me when a blue orb crashes into him. He is tossed away and I feel the ground fall away beneath my feet. I look and see that Freddie had grabbed me and was flying away. One arm is wrapped around my back and the other is holding up my knees. I wrap my arms around his neck and pull closer to him. We hadn't been in the air more than thirty seconds when a bolt of lightning strikes next to us. Freddie swerves and just barely misses a second bolt. I look back and see my father on a building directing the lightning. At that moment one of them strikes Freddie's back and we start to fall. He manages to land us on the nearest building, but immediately falls flat after setting me down. I kneel next to him and his eyes open. He tries to push himself up but his arms give out.
"Sam," he wheezes out and I lean in to listen, "I don't know what your dad did to you, but remember, he's only as strong as you let him be, this is your mind.
"I don't know if I can." I admit to him, I've never felt this vulnerable before.
"Do what you do best." He whispers as his eyes start to close. "Kick some ass." And he passes out. I feel him behind me before I hear him.
"Sam," My dad says, "Come here, give your dad a hug." He says, his voice not at all welcoming.
"No." I tell him as I stand, my back to him still.
"What did you say?" he asks angrily. I turn to him; he's standing about three yards away.
"I said No!" I shout and charge at him. I throw a fist but he catches it with ease. I throw another and he catches that as well, he's now holding both my hands. I look at him with a sinister smile and kick as hard as I can between his legs and hit him where it hurts. He crumples to the ground holding his groin. I take a few steps back and charge him again, this time I tackle him and we fall off the side of the building. I hold him in front of me and he slams into the concrete, making a dent in the road. I stand up and walk to the corner. I grab a stop sign and break it in half, leaving me a very sharp point of metal. I walk back over to him just as he's standing up.
"Wait please!" he shouts and he starts shrinking, his hair turns brown, his muscles disappear and his face becomes I'm tired of seeing. Nevel looks back at me through what had once been my father's eyes. "I'm sorry, please don't hurt me." He begs falling to his knees.
"Too late." I tell him and plunge the sign into his chest. His mouth opens to scream, but no sound comes out. Instead, a blinding white light shines from his mouth and the wound in his chest. I try to close my eyes but the light burns through them, everything is enveloped in the light. And then, just like that, the light dims slowly until I can't see it through my closed eyes. I open them cautiously, to find myself back in the Shay's apartment. I look around and see Carly to my right and Freddie to my left. Across from us, sitting in the chair is Nevel. Slowly, everyone opens their eyes.
"Is that it, are we awake?" Carly asks.
"Well," Freddie says, "We could stab Nevel in the chest and find out that way." As he says this, Nevel jumps up and runs for the door. The three of us jump up after him Carly gets to him first and tackles him. Next I come up to him and slam him against the wall.
"Please let me go." He begs.
"Why? So you can get your revenge later?" Carly asks.
"No, please, I didn't do this for revenge." He says pathetically.
"Why then?" I ask.
"I was told to." He says.
"By who?" asks Freddie.
"The same man who recruited Missy, the same man who set off the bomb to begin with."
"Who was that?" I ask.
"Cal." He says, I look at Freddie and Carly and see the shock on their faces.
"Why'd he send you after us?" Freddie asks.
"You were causing too much trouble, you gained too much attention and he needs you gone."
"So, what happens when he learns you didn't kill us?" Carly asks.
"He sends some one new, and will probably kill me." Everything becomes silent as we take this in, and then Freddie speaks up.
"Let him go." He says. I let go of Nevel and he falls to the ground. He gets up and runs away.
"Why'd you let him go?" Carly asks Freddie.
"We don't need him hanging around, now that we know that it's Cal we need to worry about, we can get ready." He explains.
"What do you mean?" I ask him.
"I mean if Cal is recruiting help, maybe we should too." He says and smiles before heading into his apartment.
General POV:
It had been two days since Nevel had fled the Shay apartment. Now he's sitting by himself on a bench in Coulee City, approximately two days from Seattle, on foot. And then, he wasn't alone; a man in a black suit was sitting next to him.
"I'm surprised it took me so long to find you." Cal said to him. Nevel jumped at the sound of his voice.
"Please don't hurt me, I tried, really, they just beat me." Nevel pleaded with him.
"I'm sure you did." Cal said and he pulled a pistol form a pocket in his suit coat. Just then a cat jumps out from it's hiding place and knocks over a trashcan. Cal looks for he source of the noise and Nevel seizes his opportunity. He grabs Cal's head and tries to put him to sleep. Immediately Cal jumps up and throws Nevel's hands off of him. "That wont work on me." He tells Nevel and uses his free hand to reach into his shirt. He pulls out a chain with a smooth rock attached to it at the end.
"What is that?" Nevel asks.
"A little gift from Missy, it stops unwanted visitors from getting into my head." Cal explains. "Now, goodbye. And say hello to Missy if you see her." Cal raises the gun and pulls the trigger.
