Chapter 12: The Truth
A/N: Here's another chapter for your guys. Standard disclaimers apply
"Are you alright Obaa-sama?" Haku asked while his sister gently squeezed their grandmother's hand.
"I'm fine." Kimiko told her grandchildren albeit her voice being a little bit gruff.
"Are you sure Obaa-sama?" Haru asked in concern, squeezing her hand again.
The older inu returned the gesture and led them to the portrait of their mother on the other side of the room.
The twins gazed at the portrait in wonder.
"Is she really our Okaa-sama?" They asked.
Kimiko nodded and started to introduce their mother to them.
"Her name is Kagome Higurashi. She is the Shikon Miko and your mother. She was the Lady of the Western Lands before death claimed her."
The pups just nodded and bowed their heads to offer a little prayer.
After praying, Haku asked what happened for their mother to die early.
Their grandmother took a calming breath before starting her tale.
"It was two months after your birth. Your mother and InuYasha went to visit the wolf tribe since Ayame-dono just gave birth. Kagome insisted on going to their home to congratulate them. You're father was against it but then your uncle promised to protect her with his life. Your father then conceded and allowed them to go."
Kimiko paused, turning to look at her grandchildren.
"What happened next Obaa-sama?" Haru asked looking at her.
"They were able to arrive safely and see Kouga-dono's little ones but when it was time to return, they were ambushed by the northern Lord's soldiers. InuYasha was able to destroy most of them but more stood in their place. It was a long battle and your mother was fatally injured so your uncle had no choice but to retreat." The female daiyoukai continued.
"Were there no solidiers with Okaa-sama and Uncle InuYasha?" Haku questioned.
His grandmother shook her head sadly.
"If Okaa-sama just gave birth two months prior to her visit, it is logical to bring soldiers with them for extra protection. Otou-sama must have been really furious if it is only Okaa-sama and Uncle InuYasha." The older twin added.
"That's right dear Haku. It took them hours before your father stepped down and allowed them to go since your mother is quite stubborn. More so than your father if you ask me but what can we do she was his greatest weakness." Kimiko answered.
"Obaa-sama was Okaa-sama able to survive the ambush?" Little Haru asked hopefully.
"Unfortunately while on their way here, due to her extensive injuries and blood loss, she was only able to remain conscious long enough to bid farewell before finally leaving us." Her grandmother replied in a quiet voice.
"I see." The younger twins whispered softly.
"So that is why Otou-sama is like that." Haku pointed out.
"It's hard for him to talk about what happened since both of you look so much like your Mother. If not for your silver hair, you two would have been mistaken for her." Their grandmother revealed.
Both twins looked at each other before looking once more at their mother's portrait.
They now understood their father's actions and his reason behind it.
A/N: Another long chapter for this story. The twins finally found out why their father treats them the way he does. Find out what the twins will do to rectify this on the next chapter.
