Chapter 12: I'll be back before you know it
"Makarov." The name rung a bell in my head, I know I've heard that name before back when I was in the S.A.S but I can't quite remember….
"You want us to capture him? Do we know his exact location?" Ghost asked.
"Not at the moment. Intel says he has a safe house up on the Georgian-Russian border, he isn't currently staying there but the safe house is guarded none the less," Shepherd explained as he waved his hands around as he talked. "There should be plenty of information inside the house on what he plans on doing and his current location." Ohh~, this sounds like fun, and easy in a way.
"That's sounds easy enough." Yuri said with a smug smile.
"It should. All you'll have to do is go into the house and collect as much information as you can and attract the least amount of attention possible."
"So it's more of a stealth mission." Ghost stated.
"Correct, therefore only three of you are allowed to go. The less go, the greater possibility of the team not getting compromised." I pressed my lips together in a hard line. That's great, I'm almost sure I won't be going. MacTavish would obviously be leading, Roach would be going because of Soap, and Ghost wouldn't miss it for the world, especially since he's the stealthiest of us all. I, of course, would have to stay because of Ghost, not that Soap wouldn't want to take me with him but Ghost wouldn't have it, he once even admitted that he would rather have me here doing paper work than out in combat. I won't lie, that actually frustrated me a bit, I mean, I understand he wants to protect me and keep me from danger but I mean, c'mon, this is just ridiculous.
"Of course, if Makarov doesn't find out we raided his house then he'd go forward with whatever plans he has, leaving us one step ahead of him." I stated. Shepherd looked at me with this strange look in his eyes.
"Yes, exactly." His gaze lingered on me for a few for seconds before finally clearing his throat and turning to look at Soap.
"Pick your team carefully, MacTavish, you'll be leaving tonight." Soap nodded.
"I will." Shepherd simply nodded and left the room. I let out a sigh and waited for the argument to start any second.
"Ghost…" MacTavish looked at him carefully.
"No." I threw my head back in exasperation. Here we go again.
"This is getting ridiculous; she's been out in missions ten times more dangerous than this."
"The Captain is right, Sir, this mission is easy enough, she wouldn't be in any danger." Yuri spoke.
"Stay the bloody hell out of this, Yuri." Ghost half yelled.
"Jeez, calm down, Ghost. It's not like I'm going to stay cooped up in here forever." I rolled my eyes. He turned to look at me; even though he has his sunglasses on I can still feel him glaring at me.
"No, Roach and I will be going with you, MacTavish." I glared back at him.
"I'm goi-"
"It's final." He growled out. Soap let out a tired sigh.
"Fine. Tricks, mind taking the night shift tonight?" I know Ghost would have done the impossible to keep me here at base, that's why I can't really be mad at Soap, but Ghost on the other hand….
"Yeah, don't worry about it Soap." Ghost is going to have a heart attack the day Soap orders him to stay back while I go with him on a mission. I brushed past him and opened the door.
"Where do you think you're going?" Ghost snapped.
"To the basketball court. I mean, it's not like I can leave base or anything."
"It seems that this whole relationship has made you lose your sense of respect." He growled lowly. I stopped dead on my tracks and slowly turned around to face him. I caught both Roach and Yuri's shocked expression. Soap simply had his eyebrows raised in amusement.
"If you don't need me to do anything, Sir, I'll be heading to the basketball court. Now, if you'll excuse me, Sir."
"You're dismissed." Soap added quickly before Ghost got the chance to reply. I nodded and left the room. A few steps forward, I heard the door open behind me along with Roach and Yuri calling me. I think I heard some angry whispers from Soap and Ghost too, probably getting into another argument.
"My lady, please don't be angry," they got on each side of me.
"Yeah, you know how temperamental Ghost can get over the most insignificant things." Roach threw an arm around my shoulder, hugging me close.
"I'm not mad." I mumbled.
"Uh-huh." They both said at the same time and chuckled. I rolled my eyes and leaned on Roach.
"It's just that I can't believe Ghost, he's just so…so-"
"Possessive?" Roach suggested.
"Over-protective?" Yuri added.
"Yeah, it's just that…sometimes it gets a bit-"
"Annoying?"
"Irritating?" They did it again.
"Stop it, guys!" They simply laughed again.
"Don't worry, my lady, I'll take the night shift with you." I shook my head.
"No, it's okay, Yuri. I don't want you cutting on your sleep because of me."
"It's no trouble at all, I promise." He gave me a reassuring smile. Roach slowed down to a stop.
"Actually, I should probably get back. You know, get stuff ready before a mission and what not." Roach sighed.
"Yeah, I'm starting to forget what that's like." I sarcastically said.
"I'll tell you what it was like when we get back." I swung at him, wanting to hit him in the arm but he dodged it in time. He laughed as he jogged back to the room. Roach is getting cockier each day, but I like it. He's finally getting out of his comfort zone.
XxX
"Take care of them for me, Soap."
"Don't worry about a thing, mate." He leaned down and gave me a bruising hug. Just then, Roach came up on his side.
"Take extra care on Roach though, he's the clumsy one on the team, I don't want him to trip and die." I teased.
"Ha-ha. Very funny, Tricks." Roach grinned and also gave me a hug before boarding the heli along with Soap. I felt someone's presence behind me. I turned around to see Ghost looking down at me with his mouth uncovered. The faintest smile playing on his lips. He leaned down to kiss me, aiming for my lips, but I tilted my head slightly to the right, his kiss landing on the corner of my mouth. The kiss lingered for a few seconds before he slowly pulled back.
"Good luck." I said softly, not looking at him. I saw him nod in the corner of my eye, hurt radiating off him even though he didn't say anything. Now I just felt like an ass. He pulled down his mask and turned to get on the heli. I felt an arm drape around my shoulder. I didn't need to turn to see who it was, I already knew it was Yuri.
"They're going to be fine, my lady, don't worry." Yuri rubbed my arm as he talked.
"Yeah, I know…" We watched as the chopper lifted and flew farther and farther away.
XxX
"We just thought it was a bit…strange?" I frowned at the ground.
"Why?" Yuri checked his flashlight out as if it were really all that interesting.
"Well, they told me that when you first got here, Ghost hated you. A lot," yeah, not the best memories." And well, when I first arrived, I also noticed his dislike for you but at the same time I noticed some jealousy. So, when you two finally got together, the guys and I thought there would be plenty of fights between you two." He smiled at me sheepishly.
"But why?"
"Isn't it obvious, my lady? We just thought you two would clash more often considering Ghost's personality. We're just surprised this fight between you two didn't happen a lot sooner." I sighed. Our first fight, and over something so stupid too. But Ghost has to understand that he can't keep me cooped up in here forever.
"I see, you guys gossip like old ladies." Yuri let out a barking laugh.
"We have to stay entertained somehow don't you think?"
"Heh, I suppose. How long have Ghost and I been the main topic?"
"Apparently, since you first arrived here."
"Jesus Christ, you people are incredible. I'm going to have to start talking about someone too just to keep me entertained." He thought for a second.
"You could. I could tell you a little about everybody." He smirked. I couldn't help but laugh.
"No thanks, I was just joking." He shrugged.
"Suite yourself, my lady." We stayed quiet as we took our sweet time walking through the crates, searching for any suspicious activity. After a few minutes of small talk and inside jokes we heard loud laughter coming from around the corner of the health center.
"They're taking advantage that Soap and Ghost aren't here. I just hope Price doesn't hear them." I sighed.
"Stay here my lady; I'll go tell them to be quiet." Yuri said as he let his ACR hand from the strap and turned on his flashlight. I nodded and leaned on one of the crates. I took a deep breath and let my lungs be filled with the cold night air. I wonder if Ghost and the rest are okay, pretty sure they are though. If something were to be wrong they would have warned us through our radio. Bloody hell, Ghost. Wait, what? Oh God, even the way he talks got stuck on me. I heard footsteps headed towards me. Yuri is back already? That was quick.
"Hey there, Tricks." I couldn't help the small frown that formed on my face.
"Griffin?" You, Sir, are not my Yuri. The hell is he doing here anyways? He's supposed to be guarding the other side of base, by the shooting range.
"Hey darling, I heard Ghost left. Mind if I keep you company?" He leaned on his side against the crate, his arms folded, a smirk on his face, and very close to me. I tried to get away from him ever so slowly.
"Actually, I do mind. Plus, Yuri is already keeping me company." He looked around.
"I don't see him around."
"He'll be back any second."
"Hmm, maybe when you're done with him, you can come over to my room?" He gave me a sly smirk as he looked me over. I looked at him in disbelieve.
"Excuse me?"
"Well yeah, my shift ends in a few; Jimenez won't go back to our room for at least two more hours. That's plenty of time for us to have some fun." I raised my arm to slap him but he caught my wrist before I got the chance to hit him. I yanked my hand back and took a step back.
"Get out of here." I warned, holding my M4A1 tightly.
"I don't see why you're getting so defensive about this. Some of us already noticed your little game."
"What the fuck are you talking about?"
"Oh, c'mon, Tricks. You were on the Captain's favorite list almost instantly; Roach is by your side almost twenty-four seven, same goes with Yuri," the next thing I knew, my writs were pinned on either side of my head, my M4A1 hanging from my strap. "And don't get me started on Ghost."
"Let me go." I was starting to hyperventilate. No, not this again. Please, not again. He ignored me and continued.
"That man hated you when you first arrived. He made sure to display his hatred for you every day in front of everyone," he leaned in, close to my neck. "Then suddenly, you two are "dating", he's by your side as much as Roach and Yuri, maybe even more."
"Let me go!" My voice cracked, my eyes wide with tears threatening to fall. I tried to pull him away but he just held my wrists tighter.
"Are you really that good? So good that you made the man who despised you suddenly worship you? I don't blame them though, you smell absolutely delicious," he inhaled and laughed. "Oh dear, I can only imagine how you taste and feel." He kissed my neck.
"No! Stop it!" I felt dirty, felt disgusted. My brain completely shut down, I couldn't remember those self-defense moves I was taught years back.
"Smart girl aren't you? Doing our superiors delicious favors hoping they'll rank you up, huh?" I felt hot tears slide down my face. This isn't supposed to be happening again. Oh God, where's Alex? Where is he! He continued to kiss my neck, and I kept trying to push him away but it was useless, he was much stronger than me.
"My lady!" I head Yuri yell. In an instant, Griffin was pulled off me. Yuri grabbed him by the front of his shirt and hit him square in the jaw causing Griffin to fall back.
"Get the hell away from here before I decide to kill you myself before Soap and Ghost arrives!" Yuri gave him a murderous look. Yuri is here. Yuri. Not Alex. Griffin glared at me then back at Yuri, wiping the blood from his mouth as he stood up. He didn't say a word as he turned and jogged away. I looked at the ground and let out a shaky breath trying to calm myself. He's gone. I felt arms around me and I couldn't help but flinch.
"Natalie…my lady, are you okay? Did he hurt you?" He rushed out and hugged me tighter. I rested my head on his chest and tried to slow down my breathing.
"I'm fine, Alex," It took me a second to realize what I've said. I slowly pushed him away, realizing his shirt was wet. I didn't realize I was still crying. Yuri placed his hands on my shoulders and looked at me with worried eyes. "Sorry, I meant to say…Yuri. I'm fine."
"I shouldn't have left you out of my sight, please forgive me." He pleaded.
"This isn't your fault, Yuri. Just forget it." I took a deep breath to clear my mind.
"Of course it's my fault, I've would have never forgiven myself if something worse would have happened!"
"But nothing happened. You got here in time and we should just…forget it." I wiped my face with my sleeve and gave him a small smile.
"Nothing? If I haven't have gotten here sooner that man would have-"
"Nothing. Please, Yuri, let's just go back to doing our job." He sighed and placed his hands behind his head, looking up at the sky.
"Ghost is going to kill me-"
"No!" He looked down at me confused.
"What?"
"No, we can't tell Ghost."
"Are you insane?!" He asked in disbelieve. I tried to keep a straight face.
"Yuri, I don't think you know what Ghost is capable of doing if he found out."
"I do. He'll be capable of killing us if he found out that we didn't tell him," he paused for a second. "Actually, no. He'll kill me; I'm not so sure what he'd do to you."
"He won't do anything because he's not going to find out. Just please, promise me you won't tell him anything." He looked at me with troubled eyes before looking away to the side.
"I won't tell him anything when he comes back…" I frowned.
"But…?" He looked back at me.
"But if he finds out and asks me directly, I'm not going to lie." I nodded.
"Fair enough." I can tell Yuri wasn't happy about this but I can't have Ghost finding out. I mean, we're talking about the man who isn't completely stable. The man who nearly exhausted Roach to death because he befriended me, the man who went mad months back because he thought I was dating someone when I really wasn't. Plus, I don't want to remember something that was long lost in my memory to come back again.
"Thank you, Yuri. For defending me." I murmured. He looked at me with a sweet smile.
"You have nothing to thank me for, my lady."
"I will admit you scared me a bit." He frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I've never seen you angry before." I looked down at my hands and noticed my wrists bruising; I couldn't help but feel worried. How am I going to hide this from Ghost?
"I'm sorry you had to see me like that." I thought back on what Yuri said to Griffin. I was just a bit curious about something…
"Yuri? What you said to Griffin back there…about killing him…would you have really done it?"
"Of course I would have. No one messes with the ones I care about." He didn't even hesitate to answer, he looked dead serious. That's when I knew that Yuri had my absolute trust.
XxX
Ghost should be here any second. Am I happy that he's coming back? Yes. Am I still mad at him?
"It seems that this whole relationship has made you lose your sense of respect."
Yes.
I feel horrible. One, because of what happened earlier and two, because of Yuri. He's such an amazing friend. He took the night shift with me when he didn't have to and now, he's guarding my door. Kind of. He said that he would be constantly passing by my door to make sure Griffin doesn't come back. He's once again cutting on his sleep just to protect me. I told him that it wasn't necessary but he insisted. I owe Yuri my life, if he wouldn't have taken the night shift with me, Griffin would have…
The sound of the door opening was heard; the smell of dirt and grass filled the room. I closed my eyes and pretended to be asleep, I already know It's Ghost. He closed the door but didn't turn on the lights, probably in consideration that I'm "sleeping". I hear the sound of a zipper; he's probably taking his jacket off. Next, I heard the sound of a drawer opening then I felt the bed move. I felt cool breath on my face, and then I felt him kiss my temple. I felt him get off the bed then the sound of the door opening and closing was heard. I opened my eyes and sighed, he probably went to go take a quick shower.
"Yuri?" I froze and couldn't help but panic.
"I can see your back, Sir." I turned around and tried to listen as much as I could.
"Yeah, we just got back. What are you doing up so late?"
"I couldn't sleep so I was just walking around."
"You look exhausted to me."
"I am now, I guess I'll go to my room now. 'Night, Sir." There was a pause.
"See you in the morning, Yuri." Huh. I guess Ghost can have a decent conversation with Yuri if he wanted to. I guess he just gets jealous when Yuri and I are in the same room. I turned back around, facing the wall and closed my eyes for a second, or so I thought, I opened my eyes when I heard the door opening again. The smell of shampoo and soap filled the room; I resisted the urge to attack him. I felt the bed move again, the covers being pulled back, and an arm around my waist. He pulled me closer to him; he kissed my shoulder and let a small sigh.
"I hope you don't stay mad at me too long, you just have to understand that I don't want to lose you." He murmured. Yeah, now I definitely felt like an ass. He let go of me and I felt the bed move again, he probably turned around. Fine, I'll try not to mad at him tomorrow. I closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep without Ghost's arm around me.
XxX
"Natalie…? Wake up," I grunted and tried opening my eyes. Notice that I said tried. "C'mon, beautiful, open your eyes."
"I can't, it burns." I heard Ghost chuckled.
"Why are you so tired? You went to sleep first that I did." Not really, my beloved Ghost. I couldn't sleep last night for two reasons. One, the guilt trip was killing me. Second, those memories that took years to forget came back, in form of a nightmare. So no, I didn't sleep. I let my eyes adjust to the sunlight and I looked at him.
"I couldn't sleep, I was having nightmares." Ghost's face turned a shade paler.
"Why didn't you wake me up?"
"I didn't want to wake you up. I'm sure you came back exhausted from the mission, I didn't want you to lose your sleep over something so stupid."
"I don't care what it is; you wake me up, okay? Do you want to tell me about it?"
"N-Not really, no," I was able to tell he was going to push on the subject so I got up from bed and changed it before he did ask anything else. "How did it go on the mission? Find anything useful?" He stayed quiet and looked at me carefully. Oh God, Ghost, please don't make me tell you.
"No, it was completely useless." Thank you~
"How come?" He slipped on the dark green t-shirt and sighed.
"We found absolutely nothing. No clues on where he is now, just an address to an abandoned warehouse."
"Maybe he's staying in that warehouse?" How the hell did the lace on my boots get tangled?
"No, it was nearly completely burnt down to ashes, it's almost impossible for anyone to stay there. Regardless, we're going to find out tonight." I slowed my movements.
"Tonight?"
"Yes, as much as I don't want to leave you, I have to go out again tonight," I couldn't help but feel a little twitch of fear. He rose from the bed and placed his hands on my face, kissing my forehead. "You're talking to me; does this mean you're no longer mad at me?" Hmm, I forgot I was.
"Kind of." He smirked.
"Is there anything I can do to change that?" He kissed my cheek then down to my jaw. I pretended to think about it.
"You could let me go to the mission with you tonight…" He stopped and pulled back, lightly glaring at me.
"Not a chance." I rolled my eyes and backed away from him, grabbing my jacket from the chair. I don't really want to be mad at him today so I'll just forget I even suggested that. As I was about to slip my jacket on, I noticed the purple-ish bruises on my wrists. I was the one who went a shade paler this time. Thank God for long sleeves, especially when it's one hundred degrees outside .
"Okay then, let's go get our breakfast."
XxX
What if he does it again? Yuri can't be by my side forever. He'll notice that we didn't tell Ghost or Soap and he'll do it again. He'll appear again.
"Hey darling, I heard Ghost left. Mind if I keep you company?"
I felt a bit light headed just by remembering. I closed my eyes for a bit, trying to clear my mind.
"Natalie!" I looked up at the sudden shout of my name. Everyone was looking at me with worried expressions (I don't know about Ghost but I'm sure he was too), but I have to say Yuri seemed the most worried.
"Yes?"
"You okay there? You look tired." Roach asked.
"Tsk-tsk, you can't keep your hands off the poor girl even though you know she's tired." Soap chuckled. That was obviously directed towards Ghost. I head a low grumbling sound from Ghost's chest.
"I didn't do anything to her last night." I let out a low laugh and looked down at the food in my plate.
"I just didn't get any sleep last night is all." I looked up and got a glimpse of Griffin a few tables in front of me. I let out a shaky breath and grabbed Ghost's hand from under the table. Ghost turned his head slightly in my direction, intertwining his fingers with mine and giving my hand a light squeeze, but he didn't say anything. I caught Yuri's pleading gaze. I know he wants me to tell Ghost but I just can't.
"That's not good. I was just about to ask you if you can take the night shift again tonight," I saw Yuri shift in his seat. "I'm sure Ghost already told you we're leaving again tonight?" Soap asked.
"Y-Yeah, he did. So don't worry, Soap, I'll take the night shift."
"I will join you, my lady." Ghost's jealousy automatically sparked.
"That's not necessary, Yuri, it's only a few hours."
"I don't mind at all, I'd like to keep her company." Yuri's tone wasn't the usual teasing one, it was serious.
"Ghost…" I warned under my breath. I know he wants to start an argument with Yuri but today is not the day. I looked up again and caught Griffin looking at me.
XxX
Ghost and I walked through the hallway. I wasn't really going anywhere, but Ghost was heading to Soap's office to plan out tonight's mission.
"Yuri has been acting weird today, don't you think?" Ghost suddenly asked. I frowned.
"Weird how?"
"Well, normally we can't get him to shut up but today, he's really quiet and serious." Is it possible that Ghost found out? Nah, blood and a dead body would have been found by now.
"Maybe he's just tired?"
"Could be, I found him on the hallway last night. He said he couldn't sleep but he looked utterly exhausted me. Almost like he was forcing himself to stay awake…" Don't get nervous, Natalie. Stay calm.
"That's strange."
"Did you see him walking around when you were on your night shift?" I cleared my throat. Why are you asking so many questions now, Ghost?
"Well uhh, he kind of took the night shift with me…"He slowed down and looked at me.
"What?" I tried to give him a smile.
"Well yeah, he felt bad that I was alone so he took the shift with me."
"He was probably just taking advantage." If only you knew that he was protecting me from someone who wanted to take advantage.
"Damn it, Ghost, why are you always attacking Yuri?"
"I'm not discussing that right now." I rolled my eyes. Why does he have to be so difficult? We reached Soap's door and stopped.
"I'll see you at the court before we leave, okay?" I simply nodded and he leaned down to kiss my forehead. I was about to turn and leave but he stopped me, I gave him a questioning look but he simply kept me in place.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine."
"Is there anything you want to tell me?" Anything I want to tell you? Not…really…
"No." He nodded and turned around, walking into Soap's office. I couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. Technically, I didn't lie so I shouldn't really feel guilty.
"Tricks!" I turned around to see Roach jogging towards me.
"Hey, what's up?"
"I just wanted to ask you something before I prepared for the mission."
"Well ask away, Roach." He looked at me carefully, as if hesitating to ask me.
"I wanted to ask if you're okay."
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why do you ask?" He looked at me with worried eyes.
"It's just that you've been acting pretty strange all day, you've been spacing out a lot," he paused and frowned. "Come to think of it, so has Yuri." I forced out a laugh.
"I'm fine, Roach, really. I'm just really tired." I was able to tell that he didn't believe me.
"Are you sure, Kiddo? Please don't lie to me." I know Roach and I have always been truthful to each other but I didn't want to worry him.
"Don't worry about me, Roach."
"Of course I worry about you, Natalie. If there's anything you need to tell me, you know I'll listen okay?" Anything that I need to tell you? Hmm.
"Will do." I gave him a reassuring smile. I know he wasn't convinced but he dropped the subject. He walked into Soap's office. I. Felt. Horrible.
XxX
"Be careful, Ghost." I hugged him around the waist, my face against his chest as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders.
"I always am. Don't worry; I'll be back before you know it," I hugged him a bit tighter and he returned the gesture. He kissed my hair and let me go. "I have to go." He murmured.
"Okay, I'll just go take a nap before I take the night shift." He leaned down to give me a sweet kiss.
"I'll see you tonight."
OoO
Something is definitely wrong with her. I don't know if she's still mad at me for what happened yesterday but it's killing me, knowing she's keeping something from me. I have a feeling Yuri is involved in this somehow. That bastard, I'll kill him if he did something to her. I walked through the hallways, heading to the court where Soap and Roach must be waiting for me. As I was about to turn the corner, I heard whispering and two very familiar voices.
"I'm just really worried, please Yuri, tell me what's wrong with her." I slowed to a stop. It was Roach, and I'm sure her was referring to Natalie.
"I have nothing to tell you, my friend." Yuri replied. The way he said it seemed that he really did want to say something.
"Please, Yuri. She told me she was fine but I know she's lying. I know her. Maybe I can help."
"Roach, I really shouldn't…"
"Look, I won't tell anyone if that's the problem. I know this is serious because she's lying to me, we've always told each other everything. Please, Yuri, I just want to help her." There was a pause before Yuri sighed.
"Last night when we were taking the night shift, I left for a few minutes to see why the men were being so loud. When I came back, I caught Griffin holding her against the crate, kissing her neck as she cried and begged him to let her go. If I haven't arrived when I did, something worse could have happened." My blood drained from my face. There's no way…she couldn't have kept that from me. I know that pathetic idiot didn't touch her…! I'm going to kill that son of a bitch! I couldn't hold it back, anger coursed through my body and I simply exploded.
"WHAT?!"
A/N: Sorry if the chapter seems rushed out; I wrote half of this in two days. But don't worry, I'll probably fix it later like I did with the rest of the chapters. Oh! I don't know if you guys noticed but I changed Natalie's call sign from Trixx to Tricks. Why? Because I imagined a box of Trix's cereal making out with Ghost instead. I couldn't really take the story serious after that.
So yes, review? PM? I don't know. Hope you enjoyed! At least a little.
