Chapter 12

The wide awake girl edged around yet another corner, holding on to the frail hope that she would miraculously run into Kid in the hallway again. She couldn't believe that she got lost again, and after all the trouble she put everyone through when she couldn't find her way back to her room. Maka let out an audible sigh and turned yet another corner, only this time she did run into someone. She didn't exactly run into him...More like she...Walked through him.

The girl let out a small yelp as the sudden cold washed over her, a cold so intense that Maka found herself shivering as she turned to face Lord Death. The first thing she noticed was that he didn't have his mask on.

"So sorry, sir! I wasn't playing attention and didn't see you there!" She explained to his dark body desperately.

Lord Death paid no attention to her and continued on his walk. Just as he was rounding the corner Maka heard him speak. "If you're looking for Kid's room, it's right behind you." He muttered quietly as he disappeared.

Maka let out an embarrassed thank you and scurried towards Kid's door, trying to shove the awkward encounter with Death himself behind her as she went. Nervously, Maka knocked on Kid's door 3 times, but he didn't come to his door. Maka considered turning around and trying to work her way to the girls rooms, but for some strange reason she knocked again. And again. And again. A little frustrated now, Maka lifted her aching hand to the doorknob and opened Kid's door.

It took several seconds for Maka's eyes to adjust to the sudden darkness in Kid's room. Maka searched around the room for Kid and thought for a moment that she had disrupted his sleeping with her sudden break in. Blush rising on her cheeks at the thought of Kid in his sleeping clothes, Maka turned to shut the door but stopped when she heard a small moan come from the corner of the bedroom. Ice shot through Maka's body and a small tingling feeling began to shoot through her arms as the moaning continued to flow from the corner, the owners voice slowly becoming more and more broken up.

Maka's hands scoured the wall for a moment until she found the light switch, but upon turning on the lights she instantly covered her mouth with her hands, tears forming in her eyes. Nearly everything in the room had been either destroyed or severely damaged. What Maka assumed was once a table now lay in splinters around the ruined bedroom, not a single thing remained in its whole and symmetrical shape. Slowly Make became aware of another thing that peppered the room, upon realizing what it was she felt hots tears flow down her face. A small choking sound threatened to come up from Makas throat, but she forced it back down and slowly closed Kids door behind her, her eyes searching the corner where she heard the first moans.

Kid lay with his back propped against the wall, his broken and bloodied hands laying at his sides uselessly. Maka felt almost as if her entire body had been put into ice water as she walked over to Kid and nervously picked up one of his hands. Kid returned her action with another small moan. She gingerly assessed his hands damaged and confirmed that almost all of his fingers had been broke and assumed his other hand was no different. The sight of Kids body made Maka a little queasy but this wasn't the time, Kid needed her now more than ever. As carefully as she could, Maka hoisted Kid onto one of her shoulders and carried him into the bathroom, propping him up next to the bath so she could clean up his wounds before taking him to Professor Stein.

The moment Kids hands hit water she felt him tense up and looked to see his eyes had opened wide and were glaring straight at her. For a moment she felt unmistakeable fear flood her body as Kid glared her down into a small puddle.

Her mouth was dry but she still managed to speak.

The pain in his hands was intense. So intense that it almost didn't feel like pain anymore, just a burning that he wanted to go away. Kid couldn't remember much, just the part about his fingers breaking and then him passing out pathetically. The boy tried his hardest but found that no matter what he did he couldn't move his body, this restriction on his movement didn't stop him from feeling the water that slowly dripped on his hands though. With a sudden snap his eyes came open, ready to attack whoever was causing him so much pain, nothing but blind anger coursing through his body.

Kid was almost shocked to see a small girl kneeling beside him, her eyes wide with confusion and fear as he battled to decide whether or not she was his enemy or ally. Briefly Kid noted the tears that stained her face and the obvious frown that she wore. It was only when her voice reached him, that her remembered what had happened.

"Kid, it's me. Maka. Someone attacked you last night, your hands are broken and I'm just trying to help. Please relax." She begged in a small voice.

Every muscle in the reapers body relaxed as he was brought back to reality. It was just Maka. He felt his heart jump when he saw her sparkling green eyes and almost managed a smile in her direction before the crushing events of yesterday hit him full in the stomach. All of a sudden Kid found himself kneeling over the toilet, what little amount of food he was able to ingest yesterday just resurfaced menacingly. He could hear Maka yelling something and saw her get up to leave. The only thing that went through his brain was the fact that he could not let her leave, he couldn't let her be alone with that monster running loose around the manor. Kids hand found hers as he wrapped his ruined fingers around hers, holding he tightly in place. He felt a small yelp leave his lips as the pain registered but he didn't care at the moment. He needed her to stay with him.

"Thanks for taking me here. I'm alright, really. Just got a little dizzy, but it's all gone now. Please, can you help me?" He asked in as calm of a voice as he could manage.

She suddenly looked relieved as she carefully lowered his hands back into the tub water. "Of course! I heard you yell earlier and I was just so worried that I had to come find you. What happened? Were you attacked? I saw your dad in the halls but he didn't say anything to me really." She said hurriedly.

A pang of anger ran through Kids body but he put on a fake smile that he hoped was convincing. "No, I just got a little upset with something my father told me. Nothing too serious though. Don't worry about it." He said in a tone that didn't suit him at all.

Maka didn't seem to think any different of it, however. instantly she began to smile and go off on a tangent about how she could never find her way around the manor no matter how hard she tried, and how she wanted to finish cleaning him up soon so that she could take him to Steins. Kid listened to her speak but didn't say anything in return. Whenever he looked into Maka's eyes he felt an intense amount of hatred and guilt run through his broken body. How could he go through with all of this? How could he hurt the girl he had cared about for so long? More importantly, how would he live with himself once she got her memories back? Would she hate him? Hopefully she would. He wanted more than anything to be hated by her, to feel like he got what was coming to him.

Kid became aware that Maka had stopped talking and wasn't really moving either. In a worried voice Kid said, "Hey, are you alright? If this is gross you don't have to keep going. I can do it myself." He said.

Maka shook her head and turned to him, a tired look on her face. Kid suddenly noticed the large bags that were under her eyes and how miserable they made her look. "Maka, what's wrong?" He asked genuinely.

Maka shrugged and turned back to his hands. "I've been having weird dreams lately, Kid." She muttered quietly.

Kids mouth suddenly became dry as he realized what must be coming.

"It's always the same thing. There's this boy, he has silver hair and pointy teeth, I never hear his voice or his name in the dreams though. The boys always crying and a few times I've seen him running towards something, his arms outstretched as if he was trying to capture it." She said, her voice void of any emotion.

Kid bit down on his cheek. "What does it make you think of?" He asked in a dry voice.

Maka pondered his question for a moment before shrugging again and replying with, "Every time I just keep thinking that the boy needs me for some reason. I've never met him before but he always looks so sad in the dreams. I just want to find him and find out what's making him so sad. Do you know what I mean, Kid?" She asked in an almost dreamy voice.

The torrent of emotions was back inside of Kid, ripping apart his very soul as he took in what she was explaining to him. Kids memories of he and his friends together began to flash in front of his eyes once more. Happy Soul. Happy Maka. They almost seemed to mock him with their expressions of happiness. He felt sick again as he look at himself standing next to them, smiling, as if he deserved to know any of them. If he hadn't of been in their lives, if he hadn't of been there, would this have been prevented? Would Maka and Soul be waking up in their apartment again, ready to start their days? How can he erase himself from their memories, just like Soul was in Makas mind. Maybe if he could do that, maybe if he could make his father see the good side of making him disappear, maybe he could fix this. Fix everyone.

"Kid? Did you hear me? I said we could see Professor Stein now, I wrapped your hands too so the bleeding will stop." Maka said, standing up and helping him up. "And don't worry about the dreams, Kid. We can talk about them later, when you aren't so broken." She joked with a laugh.

Kid laughed back but felt numb, almost as if he wasn't in his own body anymore. Just a ghost walking around in a human shell. He felt himself being guided out of his destroyed room, the lack of symmetry only adding to his sadness as he was forced into the hallway. He heard Maka ask Kid to guide them throughout the halls, so she wouldn't get lost again and he agreed. The cute and embarrassed way that she spoke would have normally made Kids heart melt, but did he even have the right to care for her anymore?

They passed the girls at the table, eating breakfast. Kid ignored their questions about his hands and opened the front door to the manor. "I had a bit of an episode last night, so Maka and I are going to see the Professor for a while. You two are to stay here and..Keep an eye on my father." Kid instructed in a harsh tone.

Liz sat back down, her expression clearly confused, but she didn't object as Kid pulled Maka through the door and the two started down the stairs, towards the city streets. Kid kept a careful eye on Maka's face as he allowed her to take his hand and help him walk towards the academy. He didn't really know what he was looking for besides any kind of sign that Maka would show of her previous encounters with the familiar streets. Being chased by Black Star as she tried to escape, Soul leaving her all of a sudden, her terrible incident at her apartment that started this whole thing, any event that would trigger sudden emotion to flow through her. Maka seemed completely normal however, even happy, as she strolled around, looking in the windows of shops they passed and greeting everyone she met on the street in a friendly tone. Kid suddenly became angry, at what he did not know, but he hated everything that was around him at the moment, and in the split second that followed, he understood why.

"Oh! Kid! These are the basketball courts you and I played on with Liz and Patty last summer! Do you remember? It was so fun!" Maka said in an excited tone while pointing at the hoop.

Kids stomach twisted again but it didn't end there.

"Hey now, Maka. We were there too. Don't count us out just because you haven't seen us in forever." An extremely annoying voice said angrily from the top of the hoop.

Kid tightened his grip on Maka's hand, ignoring the objection that came from his fingers when he did. "Hello, Black Star." He said, venom in his voice.

The boy jumped from his perch and landed in front of Kid, his fist raised, a burning anger in his eyes. "Hello, Kid." He said calmly.
