So, since I've gotten sooooo many requests...
Update ^^
Hope it meets your expectations!
"Akihiko?" the young woman called again, her hand on the door to the boy's room, "can we talk?"
Rin felt her heart sink when the room remained silent, the hand on her tea mug tightening as her heart did, her mind worried that she may have destroyed everything she held dear.
"Akihiko," she tried again, this time opening the door, "I need to talk to you about everything."
Her eyes wandered the dark room, the sound of rain coming from the open window worried her, her tea placed on the top of his dresser while she ran faster to his bed, the comforter torn off to reveal stacked pillows, Rin's brown eyes widening enormously at the sight of her missing son.
"My God," she whispered looking from the bed to the window, her heart tightening, "Akihiko!"
"She couldn't have taken it that badly…"
Heavy amber eyes turned to look at his younger brother, Sesshomaru swallowing thickly as he ran his fingers through his long strands.
"InuYasha, we've been over this a hundred times," his brother groaned, "wouldn't you?" the demon pointed out, his eyes glancing to the young woman who sat opposite him, her own eyes red rimmed as her nose still sniffling.
Sesshomaru looked out at the miserable weather, his mood faring no better than the sky, his heart heavy after the argument he had shared with Rin. As much as he despised to admit it, she was right; he had abandoned the right to parenthood when he left her and, though the child was his by blood, the boy had only known him for a month, maybe even less. His lips released sigh as he rested his forehead in his hand; while he agreed with her, it did not change the fact that he wanted the boy as his son as much as he still wanted Rin. The largest mistake he ever made was letting her go and though he acknowledged it, he never imagined it would tear him apart like this.
"You make it sound like I don't deserve this," Sesshomaru murmured quietly, "after what I did to her, I shouldn't even know about my son."
"You don't-"
"I left her for some stupid arranged marriage that I tried to sort out without hurting her which ended up hurting her so badly she never wants to see me again," the demon interrupted her, "care to rethink your answer?"
"Fine!" Kagome glared at him, "but you don't need to snap at me…"
Sesshomaru sighed at the young woman's outburst, her face contorting as she appeared to cry anew.
"My apologies," the demon murmured quietly.
When Sesshomaru had arrived to tell them his news, the young woman had almost immediately run to the phone to call Rin. After three tearful messages, Kagome finally got through to her, only to have her old friend coolly tell her she wasn't interested in seeing her anymore and that if she could keep away from the two of them, she'd appreciate it.
"InuYasha," Sesshomaru murmured, "do you think you could answer your phone?"
"Don't wanna," the half-demon pouted, "it's probably dad… calling about this mess."
"Doesn't surprise me," his elder brother commented, "he's probably as pissed off as you are."
"No shit," InuYasha grumbled as he reached for the phone in his pocket, "hm? Hello? Uh-Rin!?"
Sesshomaru and Kagome both lifted their heads at InuYasha's surprised voice, the half demon staring at his phone as though it were a foreign object.
"Rin? Are you o- huh? Uh… Akhikio? No… he isn't here with us… why would he be-gone?"
Both Sesshomaru and Kagome stood at the word, the demon's own amber eyes wide as his heart stilled, his brother looking at him with equally worried eyes.
"What do you mean he's gone?" InuYasha whispered, his eyes darting towards his bother, as the dog demon took the phone from his brother's hand.
"-I mean, one minute he was in his room and now he's not-"
"Rin-"
"Sesshomaru?"
The dog demon felt frozen as he heard the tearful voice cut through the line, the tone all too familiar to him.
"Rin?" he asked, "what is it? What's wrong?"
"He-He's gone," she choked out, obviously distraught, "Akihiko-he-he's gone."
"What do mean 'gone'?" Sesshomaru asked worriedly, now standing from his chair.
"I mean he snuck out," she cried, "I don't know where he is."
"Are you sure?"
"He-He's not in his room," she sobbed, "I checked the house but the window in his room was open. God Sesshomaru, I need your help, please!"
"Alright calm down," he told her, "have you called the police?"
"Yes," she choked, "but since they think he's a runaway, they won't do much, they want to wait till he comes home or an hour passes, but the rain-"
"Shhh," the demon murmured as Kagome stepped up to them, "I understand, I'm on my way now, just keep calm and wait for me."
"I'm sorry," she told him, "I can't, I have to go looking for him."
"Where will you be?" he asked her he slipped on his coat, his hand reaching for the doorknob, "I won't stop you, but I'll meet you there."
"The park," she told him, "he loves it there, but I'm calling my friends to help look around."
"Alright," he murmured, "I'll be as fast as I can," the phone shut off and was tossed to his brother, "InuYasha, Kagome, stay here, if Akihiko comes by, call us."
"Wh-What happened?" Kagome interrupted, her voice shaky, "what happened to Akihiko."
"I don't know," Sesshomaru interrupted, "hopefully nothing."
The rain was unrelenting as the black car pulled up next to the park, the collar flipped up against his neck as he called out to Rin, a beam of light coming closer to him, the lithe form in her own rain coat approaching him, her arm holding a bright yellow coat to her chest, her eyes red from crying.
"Rin," he tried again, "is everything-"
Her arms were around him in a heartbeat, her face buried into his chest as she sobbed into him.
"I'm so sorry," she cried, "Sesshomaru-I'm just so sorry, I-I didn't know who else to turn too."
"Hey, shh," he murmured, his hand rubbing soothing circles on her back, "it's alright Rin, you're doing what you can."
"But this is my fault," she cried looking up at him, her had to her mouth as she tried to calm herself, "if I hadn't snapped at you-"
"Let's focus on finding him first," he told her, his hand brushing away the tears on her cheeks, his amber eyes catching on the yellow coat, "is that his?"
She swallowed as she nodded, her hands wringing the coat in her hands, "yeah; if he ran from his room, he wouldn't have this, he must be soaking wet by now."
"Okay," he whispered, "where have you looked?"
"The jungle gym, the-the sand pit," she inhaled deeply, "but I don't know where else he could be here, the only place left are the tables where he plays chess and other than that-" she choked back tears, "I have no idea where he is."
"Calm yourself and think," he told her, "is there anywhere else he would go to be alone, any place he likes?"
"I-I don't-" her eyes widened as she turned to look up at the park.
"Rin?"
"The trees," she whispered, "he-he likes to climb trees to think, gives me a heart attack every time he does it."
"Alright," he told her, "let's start looking."
The park was filled with their two voices calling out Akihiko's name in concern, Rin's flashlight flickering from tree to tree, her eyes worried and tears threatening to fall as hope faded from her with each passing tree. Amber eyes flickered from the trees as hers did, his hand on the trunks as he looked up at the branches, the mud in beneath the trunks going unnoticed by him until he caught the disturbance not made by him, his eyes looking upwards at the tree, a singular slim branch hanging by a thread.
His head wiped around as he tried to follow the muddied trail, the rain making it impossible to determine where he ran off too, his body forced into relaxing as he strained his ears for a sound other than the pattering rain, slight relief washing over him as he heard the slight whimpers emanating from under the stone table, his heart still racing as he ran for it, his hand on the grey stone as he lowered himself down on his knees to look underneath, his eyes widening at the sight of the crying and shivering boy, his left arm curled up against his body while he cried.
"Akihiko!" he called softly to the boy, his arm extended to him, the child moving away from him slightly. "Akihiko," he murmured now extremely worried, "what is it, what's wrong?"
"Where's mommy?" he cried, "I want mommy!"
"Your mommy's been calling you for a while now," Sesshomaru explained, "didn't you hear her?"
The boy sniffled as he shook her head, his shoulders shaking as he sobbed, "I can't hear anything but rain."
"Okay," he whispered, "I'm here for you-"
"No you're not," Akihiko cried, "you're gonna leave again!"
Sesshomaru retracted in shock, the knife Rin had already dug into his chest with the argument the two of them had was twisted further.
"Wh-Why?" he asked quietly, "why do you think I'll leave you?"
"I don't know," Akihiko cried, "you just did!"
"But-I wouldn't-"
"You did!" the boy screamed, "you already did, mommy didn't want to make me sad like her so she didn't tell!"
"What do mean by that?"
"That's why mommy is sad when she sees your picture," the child sobbed, "cause you just left!"
Sesshomaru felt shocked at the words, his eyes widening as his heart felt wrenched out of place, the worst mistake he had ever made continuing to haunt him, even with his child.
"I made a terrible mistake," Sesshomaru told him softly, "there is nothing I can say or do to you or your mother that will make up for it. Akihiko," he murmured, praying that the boy would look at him, the answer came when the tearful amber eyes met his, "Akihiko-"
"Sesshomaru?! Did you find him?"
"Mommy!?"
Sesshomaru felt frozen as the little boy ran past him for his mother, his undamaged arm reaching for her.
"Akihiko!" she screamed, tears falling down her face as she approached the two of them, her hands outstretched to her boy as she kneeled for her son. "Oh my baby," she tried again, her son looking at her with tears in his eyes while his mother's hands cupped his cheeks, her eyes looking over him, "Akihiko are you alright? Wh-What happened to you?"
"I-I hurt my arm wh-when I fell out of the tree," the child stammered, "I'm sorry m-mommy, I kn-know you told me not to-"
"No, no don't worry about that," Rin told him, her own tears falling down her face, brown eyes looking from him to Sesshomaru, "we need to get him to the hospital."
Without a word to her the dog demon led her and the boy over to his car, Rin slipping in the backseat with her son, the child cradled in her arms as she rubbed his undamaged arm to keep him warm, the coat the dog demon wore stripped off to allow his navy sweater to be draped over the freezing child, the woman using it as a blanket for her son.
The ride to the hospital was as swift as the dog demon could make it while keeping the woman and the child in his backseat as safe as possible, Rin crooning and hushing the boy the entire trip. It was only after Akihiko had been admitted did their worries begin to eat at them, Sesshomaru leaned against the wall with his arms crossed for the beginning of it all while Rin sat on the bench, her lips to her fist as she tried to quell her fears. After a few moments the dog demon took a seat next to her, his arms around her slim shoulders while she leaned into him, her breaths trying to steady herself while her hands were encompassed by his strong ones.
It felt like an eternity before the doctor slipped out of the room and walked over to them, his eyes on the clipboard before he looked up at the two of them, the parents standing at the sight of him.
"Mr. and Mrs. Nori?" he asked calmly looking at both of them though small round spectacles.
"Uh-N-No," Rin stammered, looking at Sesshomaru before back to the doctor, "I-I'm Ms. Nori and he's Sesshomaru Takahashi. Wh-What's going on with our son?"
"You two can relax," the man murmured, "he's fine, his arm and wrist are broken but we set them in a cast and he'll have to wear it for six weeks. Keep it elevated if he feels it swelling and wear a plastic bag when he has a shower or bath."
"Okay," Rin sighed nodding, her body relaxing slightly.
"Would you mind telling me what happened?"
Rin felt her words die on her tongue, her throat to tight to speak.
"He-He fell out of a tree," she whispered, fear that some social worker would take her son away out of suspicion that she was an abusive parent.
"This is not Ms. Nori's fault," Sesshomaru murmured, surprising both Rin and the doctor, "recently, she and Akihiko have had an… interesting turn of events."
"Explain, please."
"Five years ago… I left Rin when she was pregnant and I only recently found out that she bore my son," Sesshomaru explained, pain in his voice, "and unfortunately, I have not handled it as well as I should have."
"Are you two in a custody dispute?"
Rin shook her head, "no, but… there has been an argument…."
"When the child was around?" the man pressed while Rin felt tears prick her eyes.
"I tried to send him away and put a door between us but," Rin took a shuddering breath, "but he's just so smart and he can read people so well he figured it out and he got so upset he screamed at me and he's never done that before-"
"You can relax ma'am," the doctor murmured, his hand on her shoulder, "your little boy told me all that too and there are no signs of abuse and no history of it; don't worry," he smiled kindly as she nodded, "in any event, he has developed a fever now," his hands were up as Rin looked worried, "we've checked him over and it looks like it's nothing to worry about but if it increases bring him back."
"Is there anything we should be concerned about?" Sesshomaru asked.
"Just keep him on the antibiotics that we've prescribed for him and he'll be fine. If his fever increases or his condition degrades, bring him back and we'll see what we can do," the man explained, "but otherwise no, the fever is most likely nothing to worry over and he'll be better after a bit of medicine and rest."
"Thank you doctor," Rin smiled weakly, the man nodding before informing her about paperwork, the young woman nodding before she walked over to the counter, her hand flying over the paper as she signed her name and initialed where necessary. "Um… can-can I see him?"
"Of course," the doctor smiled as he guided her towards the room with the child lying in the bed, his arm over his stomach, his face pulling into a sorrowful smile when he saw his mother approach him, her arms slipping around her baby boy.
The dog demon watched from the doorway at his son and his once lover, the child's arm in a cast above his chest while the boy rested against his mother's chest, his arm rising slowly with his chest, his face evident that it had been washed from his tears. Sesshomaru felt his heart break at how small and fragile his son seemed to be on the big hospital bed, the cast on his arm only furthering his thoughts, his heart tightening as he remembered that, had he and Rin not fought, his son would never be like this in the first place.
Amber eyes darted back to the woman over her son's injured form, his hand lingering on the glass before he silently slipped away from the room to the elevator doors; Rin was right, he had no place in his son's life, he abandoned both that chance and her the minute he made that foolish decision.
"Goodbye, Akihiko," Sesshomaru murmured sadly as he slipped onto the elevator, "I'm sorry about my promise, but your mother's right, I never had a place in your life, I never did."
