Part 12

Captain's Log: Supplemental. After much debate, it was decided that an 'Away Team' will be sent over to the Borg 'cube', to garner as much data on this alien species as possible.

Within the bowels of the Borg vessel, the air shimmers a bit…

"We're in," Commander Riker said, as he, Ranma, Data and Usagi. He looked around, then towards Ranma, who then nods his head as an acknowledgment of what to do next.

"Riker to 'Enterprise'," Riker said, as he tapped his com-badge. "Everyone is…safe."

"Good," Captain Picard replied, as he nods his head from the Bridge of the Enterprise. "Keep us posted."

"Understood," came the reply over the Bridge's PA system. "Riker: out."

"So, you see, Q," Picard said, as he turned towards his unwanted guest. "We have this situation well in hand."

"We shall see, 'Mon Capitan'," Q replied.

"Humph," Picard said, as he turned towards Security Chief Yar. "Make sure we maintain transporter lock on the Away Team."

"Aye, sir." Yar replied.

"Counselor-"

"I am within one with them, sir," Counselor Troi replied, as she kept her mental lock on three members of the Away Team, since Data was an artificial construct. "However…"

"What is it?" Picard asked.

"Something is not…right with Usagi," Troi said with a frown. "It is as if she is hiding something."

Picard looked at the Borg vessel, which sat at station. He knew Ranma and Usagi has had extensive experience as explorers within the so-called "Uncharted Territories", which is why he wanted the couple to be a part of his crew. But he also knew Ranma more so than Usagi, who had gone missing after the Nerendra III incident. But Ranma had vouched for his wife, and so Picard had put aside his concerns.

"Well, Picard?" Q asked. "Doubts about one of your officers?"

"If I had any, I would not have permitted Lt. Tsukino go on this mission," Picard said. I trust her to conduct herself competently."

"We shall see, Picard," Q replied, as he leans back into his seat. "We shall see…"

Meanwhile, the Enterprise-D's Away Team continue its exploration of the Borg ship.

"Man, check THIS one out," Ranma said, as he spots a very attractive female Borg, who, along with the other Borg "drones" were standing motionless. "The things I could do with her…"

"You know, I am not as bad as being a 'horn-dog' like you are, Ranma," Riker replied.

"Oh, you're one to talk, sir," Usagi replied. "There's already a fan club betting on which crewmember you are going to go out on a date next."

"I am just trying to get to know my crewmates better, Usagi," Riker replied.

"So does that mean that sexual intercourse is the proper way of developing ship camaraderie, sir?" Data asked innocently. "If so, I propose that the command staff engage in such activities, as a way of becoming closer."

Everyone looks at the android with a weird look on their faces.

"Is it not the human thing to do?"

"It is SOMETHING to do, but I doubt the Captain would approve," Ranma said, as he sees a junction port. "Commander, we can tap into the Borg network here."

Riker looks at the junction port…

"You think you can gain access without alerting everyone of what we are doing?" Riker asked.

"We can try," Ranma replied, as he unpacks his tool box. "I might need a distraction, though."

"Then we should proceed to the nursery," Usagi said.

"Wait, there is a nursery?" Riker asked. "You seem to be familiar with these 'aliens', Usagi."

"It only stands to reason that there has to be a nursery, to have a supply of replacement drones, yes?" Usagi replied.

Riker stares at Usagi with suspicion.

"Honest!"

"Okay," Riker said with a sigh. He then turned towards Ranma and Data.

"Ranma, Data: you two get as much information as possible from this ship," Riker said. "Usagi and I will go to this…nursery."

"Aye, sir," replied Ranma and Data in unison.

A short time later, Riker and Usagi did manage to find the Borg nursery. In special incubation pods were future Borg drones, who would be "born" as babies, who will be fitted with Borg implants, while going through an accelerated growth spurt to maturity.

"My god," Riker said, as he sees the rows of Borg "babies" being grown. He then turned towards Usagi.

"How did you know-?"

"Ranma and I came across similar species before," Usagi said, as she began to tap into the databanks of the nursery. "But with such a variety of genetic structures available, it seems like the Borg assimilates entire species as well."

"'Assimilate'?"

"Per my readings, these Borg can assimilate entire species using 'Borg nano-probes'," Usagi said, as she shows her medical Tricorder to the First Officer.

"And then they can sift through a library of genes to grow the best type of Borg drone," Riker said with disgust.

"I suppose so," Usagi replied, as she touched one of the incubation pods, where a Borg baby was resting comfortably. "If we are going to run into these guys in the future, it's best we know how best to defeat them, biologically."

"Good point," Riker replied with nod. "And I assume that knowledge of the variety of genetic material will come in handy to de-infect those who have been assimilated?"

"Of course," Usagi said, as she continued her work. "Brute strength, while glamorous, is not going to defeat a Borg vessel."

"I see-"

CHIRP!

"Commander Riker," Ranma said, over a secured link to Riker's position.

"Go ahead," Riker replied.

"We got what we need, but we better vacate."

"Oh?"

"Correct, sir," Data interjected. "The vessel is configuring itself to adapt to our ship."

"Understood," Riker replied, as he turned towards Usagi. "Usagi?"

"We have all we need for now," Usagi replied, as she de-linked her Tricorder from the databanks.

"Good," Riker said, as he noticed that Borg drones were on approach. "And not a moment too soon…"

Back on board the Enterprise-D, the Federation vessel immediately heads back to what will be known as the "Alpha Quadrant". However, the Borg vessel that the crew came across was now in hot pursuit.

"Need my help, Picard?" Q grinned. "You know that you can't outlast that Borg ship with your present technology."

Picard grimaced at the thought of being captured by a powerful, alien vessel. He knew that he could not ask Ranma to use his Green Lantern power ring to deal with the Borg, but what choice did he have…?

"Commander Saotome?" Picard asked. "I know that you are forbidden to use your 'other employment' to assist any Federation ship without authorization, but I might need that assistance after all."

"Don't need to," Ranma replied, as he fingers danced across the panel of his CONN station. "We've already anticipated this, and are about to do a 'Plan B'."

"A what?"

"While on the Borg vessel, we discovered that the Borg uses a series of 'conduit' to effectively travel at 'trans-warp speed'," Data replied, as the android performed the calculations to 'cube' a warp field. "Unfortunately, using a Borg conduit is not possible…"

"But creating one for one's own is," Picard said with a nod and a realization. "But we will be 'flying blind', essentially."

"That is correct, which is why making sure that my calculations are as accurate as possible is necessary."

"Then, Engineering…?"

"We're as ready as we are," Chief Engineer LaForge said from his station on the Bridge. "The stress of doing this could tear the ship."

"Then, we'll risk it," Picard said, as he turned towards Q. "And taking risks is the reason why many of us joined Starfleet."

"Humph," Q replied.

With that, the Enterprise-D shifted from warp to trans-warp, by creating an artificial conduit (or "wormhole"), thus escaping the Borg…

Captain's Log, Supplemental. After arriving on the paradise planet of Risa, the Enterprise and her crew took a much-needed break from normal duties. Well, most of the crew was granted shore-leave, while the remaining crew began the repair work that would allow the Enterprise to travel to the nearest 'starbase' for further repairs. After speaking with Guinan about the Borg further, it is my contention that Starfleet will be meeting these enigmatic creatures again, and probably soon.

"Well, we should enjoy this 'vacation' as much as possible," Riker said, as he and Ranma sat by the pool, watching the young ladies, both local and from elsewhere, walk by. "We probably won't get a second chance of this for a while."

"No kidding," Ranma replied, as he looks over to see Usagi tending to their daughter Rankiko, who was now learning how to swim. Ranma's mind went back to his conversation with his wife, shortly after the Enterprise-D escaped the Borg…

"Usagi, did you get the information?" Ranma asked, as he and Usagi sat at a workstation in one of the ship's labs.

"I have," Usagi said, as she reviewed the data she collected.

"And…?" Ranma asked anxiously.

Usagi looked up with tears in her eyes.

"She alive, Ranma," Usagi said with a smile. "Our daughter Hoshiko is alive."

Ranma calmed himself, as a virtual weight was lifted. He knew that those captured by the Borg had their identities virtually erased, as an insurance to prevent individuality from affecting the collective. Usagi's presence was to pinpoint a unique genetic signature that would give them a clue if their daughter, Hoshiko Saotome, was still alive after all this time.

"Then, the next step is to decide what to do next," Ranma replied, as he looked out into the darkness of space. "And whether or not we should tell the captain that Starfleet already knew about the Borg, even as early as two-hundred years ago…"

Pause.

"After all, we were there," Ranma replied grimly.

Usagi nods her head, even as she reached out to her husband of many years. Both she and Ranma were under orders to keep the Borg, and several other powerful "entities" a secret. After all, such news could easily hamper efforts to expand the Federation's territory…

"Ranma?" Riker asked, seeing that Ranma was zoning out a bit.

"Hmm?" Ranma replied, as he woke up from his thoughts. "Sorry about that…"

Ranma then sees Lianna, a blue-skinned, athletic beauty, rise from the pool in her bathing suit, wet and slick, as if she was moving in slow motion. Lianna was away on business during the Enterprise-D's encounter with the Borg.

"Ranma Saotome," Lianna said, as she looked down at the Starfleet officer. "I require your presence…alone."

"Now?" Ranma said with annoyance. "I'm doing 'family stuff' right now…"

Meanwhile, back in deep space, in the heart of the Borg Collective, a female Borg awakens.

STATE YOUR DESIGNATION.

"I am Borg Six of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix 01," replied the Borg drone formerly known as Hoshiko Saotome.

STATE YOUR PURPOSE.

"My purpose is to assume the role of representative or leadership of the Borg should the need arise," Six of Nine states. "There are nine such Borg, with One of Nine presently fulfilling that purpose."

Just then, another Borg drone exits her alcove before facing her "sister-drone".

"Six of Nine, you have been chosen to lead an expedition to the third planet of the Sol Star System," said the Borg drone. "The parents of 'Hoshiko Saotome' and their allies are to be assimilated, as should the parents of 'Annika Hansen' were."

"I will comply, Seven of Nine," Six of Nine said. "Ranma Saotome and Usagi Tsukino will be assimilated, as will the rest of the humans of that sector."

Overhearing this, Q was munching on a bowl of popcorn.

"Fascinating," Q said quietly, as he picked a kernel from a bowl that was being held by a Borg drone, one that he had managed to get control of. "Most fascinating…"
