CHAPTER 12
A WHITE ROOM WITH NO WINDOWS
The Eleventh Doctor got out of the Tardis, but the one-hearted one stood inside, still debating with himself what he should do. All those thoughts that he feared came back to him, and they froze his legs. Outside the Tardis, the Eleventh Doctor stood in the middle of Rose's living room, which, apart from the furniture, was empty.
"Hello! Is anyone home?"
He went inside the kitchen, and then, into Jackie's room, but there was no one in there as well. Finally, he entered Rose's room. It was just as he was starting to remember, with the double bed in the middle, the two nightstands, the huge wardrobe facing everything else, and specially the mess. The bed was unmade, there were pieces of clothes laying on the floor and on the furniture, and there were shoes tossed all around the bedroom floor as well. He walked toward her nightstand, and picked one object that was on top of it.
Behind the Eleventh, the human-Doctor finally gathered the courage to face whatever was on the other side of the Tardis door. Getting inside Rose's room he smiled sadly, leaning on the door's jamb, and crossing his arms over his chest. The Eleventh turned to him, and walked back into the kitchen, paying more attentions to details this time, he opened the refrigerator's doors, and saw 4 orange round objects.
"Doctor, I think you should come here…"
The human-Doctor was pulled out of his trance like state, and followed the Eleventh's voice into the kitchen, only to find him with the refrigerator's door opened and a faint smile on his face. Curious about what could be inside the fridge that could make the other Doctor smile like that, he walked toward the Eleventh Doctor, and peeked inside the cooling device.
"I don't think she ever forgot you…"
Said the Eleventh while he handed the human-Doctor a pair of white 3D glasses. Inside the fridge, there was a pumpkin with only one word carved in it:
ALLONS-Y
By seeing those objects that his Rose kept with so much care, even though she probably didn't even know why, a new wave of determination possessed him, and he started to browse through every single piece of paper that could tell him where The Tylers were. He was so focused on that job, that he missed the Eleventh Doctor getting back on the Tardis, and the sound of the Blue Box vanishing from the living room, never to return again.
-DW-
She started to become aware of what was going on around her slowly. First, she felt the bed under her body, and the sheet over it. Then, she felt the soared parts of her wrists and ankles, which were still tied to the bed. Under her head there was a hard pillow, and the bright white light that came from a lamp in the ceiling was already hurting her eyes. Her head was a little pained, and her mouth and throat were so dry that she started to think they were made of sand. Rose moaned softly and heard movement around her. She opened her eyes slowly, trying to guard them from the hurtful bright light, and saw that she was no longer in her hospital room. The lamp in this one, instead of those long ones, was just a small bulb hanging from the ceiling. She looked to her sides, and there were no windows whatsoever. Behind her bed, and really up high, she saw a tiny window, but it was guarded with thick black metal bars which seemed to be the only dark colored item in the room, since the rest was all white, and cream. In front of her bed, there was a door, with a closed square hatch on the top, and no handle. Looking to her right, where she thought she'd heard a noise, Rose saw a large dark man wearing white clothes. He turned to her, with a sympathetic smile.
"Good morning, Miss Tyler. How are you feeling?"
Without she even asking, he brought a glass of water to her lips, and helped her drink it. The water going down her throat hurt a little at first, but then she eagerly drank the rest, empting three glasses of water before she could reply.
"I'm fine… I think… Where am I? Am I still in the hospital? Which ward is this?"
The nurse gave her another of those sympathetic smiles before he could answer.
"I will get your doctor, and he will be able to explain everything to you, okay? I'll be right back."
Before Rose could even complain, he had turned to the door and knocked three times. Not long after that, the hatch was opened just to be closed again and the door was opened to allow the nurse out, leaving her alone and a little bit scared in this new white room. She checked the room once more, but there wasn't much to see, so she just focused her eyes on the ceiling, waiting for Dr. Jack to show up and explain everything. Her thoughts went back to her Doctor, wondering where he was. If he were at her place, he would be probably searching for any clue he could find about her whereabouts. She knew that he was coming for her, but she couldn't just lay there and wait. She was no damsel in distress. She needed to find a way out, so she could search for him too. But what if he too had forgotten about her? The door was opened, and Dr. Jack came in.
"Hello Rose. Sorry about the sudden change of environment, but your parents and I decided it was necessary. But first, how are you feeling? Any more dreams or hallucinations?"
"First of all, I'm getting sick and tired of everyone asking me how I am feeling. I'm fine, and I'll let everyone know in case there is any change to that. Second, where am I? And why isn't anyone telling me that?! Third, they are not hallucinations! The Doctor is real! So is the Tardis and everything else."
Dr. Jack let out a loud sigh, as if to point out that this wasn't the answer he was looking for. He ran his right hand through his hair.
"Rose, if you keep believing that this Doctor character is real, I can't help you. You need to help me help you. You have to meet me half way here, or there is nothing I can do for you."
"I can agree with you that you think he's not real, because you probably don't remember him, or you never knew him. But that is as far as I am going to 'meet you half way'."
He fixed his look on her face for a while and the feeling of disappointment was tangent in the air. Dr. Jack forced himself a sad smile.
"Ok Rose. We will have to work on that from now on…" He knocked three times at the door, waiting for it to be opened with his head down.
"Wait! You still didn't tell me where I am! What is this place?!"
He stopped at the opened door. Screams were coming from the other side. Dr. Jack looked back a Rose, this time with a serious expression in his face.
"You're in the Torchwood Mental Institution."
The door closed behind him, and was locked from the outside, while Rose just stood there in her bed, paralyzed with shock.
